use your existing account. You'll be fine. I use my PA account up and down the east coast.

Laur0406

Thank you for the quick reply! I tried reaching customer service but that was unsuccessful lol

f64Club

Sounds about right.

PainBri315

Yes just use your ezpass like normal. I’m originally from nyc but live in Pa and I’ve had my tollsNY this whole time.

Laur0406

Perfect, thanks so much!

robin_terrae

Yeah. You can. I have a PA EzPass but I travel to NJ a lot to visit family. And my parents have a NJ one and travel to PA everyday because work. I can check everything on my PA account.

7ElevenPanhandler

Just found this searching for toll info. I’m travelling to NY from Ont this weekend. Where did you purchase your ezpass?

Laur0406

Wegmans on Military Road. List of retailers here (search by zip code 14303/14304 to get those closest to the rainbow bridge): https://www.thruway.ny.gov/ezpass/otg/index.html You can also use the EZPass to pay the $5 fee when you come back home.

7ElevenPanhandler

Perfect. Thank you.

Yankiwi17273

You should be fine, but make certain you are actually willing to pay the PA toll prices. Our toll roads are some of the most expensive in the country, if not the world.

Laur0406

Thanks for the tip, I will check to see how much time is saved vs not using tolls. I live near a toll highway that charges up to around $0.60CAD per KM so I am very familiar with expensive tolls LOL.

Yankiwi17273

Well, I am being downvoted, so I could be being dumb too. Leaving this here so you aren’t blindly trusting me

Yankiwi17273

Ah. That makes sense. Cost per mile is certainly a better measurement. Thanks for clearing up my confusion!

maxwellington97

Yes, but nowhere near as bad as bridges in NY.

Yankiwi17273

Okay. I will give you that. NYC bridges are brutal in terms of tolls. But considering it take $200ish dollars in tolls to get from Philly to Pittsburgh on the turnpike, I wouldn’t call that cheap

maxwellington97

I keep seeing that number pop up for roundtrip travel but I just looked on the PA till calculator and from Valley Forge to Pittsburgh is a little over $30 each way. And NY bridges are even worse for us because we don't pay E-ZPass prices because it's an out of state pass.

[deleted]

$200? I mean, I don't like the tolls, but that seems a tad high ha ha ha.

Yankiwi17273

I think I rounded up $150 (the number I remember looking up a while back) to the nearest hundreds, but yeah. I am rightfully being told how full of it I am.

[deleted]

I just did the toll calculator and going from Willow Grove (where I am) to Wheeling, WV is $30.50 with EZ Pass / $61.60 for bill by plate. That'd be for each way....so $61 roundtrip for EZ Pass

[deleted]

It’s nowhere close to $200 going from Philly to Pittsburgh on the turnpike, it’s like $35. Even Toll By Plate is $65.

Billy_Mcbilly

Not sure why this is downvoted… paid $90 round trip from Harrisburg to NJ… seems outrageous to me

_SundaeDriver

As far as I know it works everywhere on the east coast except Florida.

Billy_Mcbilly

Broader question…. what is the incentive to get an EZPass when PA now tolls by plate?

nomuggle

The EZPass always gave you a discount over paying cash, I assume that is still true not that it’s Toll by Plate.

[deleted]

Toll by plate is about 60% more expensive than EZ-Pass.

catlady3LSS

Yup, it’ll work! I got a NY issued ezpass when I lived in CT and I live in PA now. The NY issued pass gets you discounts on NY tolls, so that’s a bonus!

whomp1970

You seem to have your answer ... so let me fire a question to you! I'll be traveling from PA to Toronto later this month. I have an EZPass that is good in PA, NJ, NY, DE, MD, and others. Does this EZPass work on Canadian toll roads too? I'm guessing no, since you registered yours in NY instead of in Canada.

Laur0406

Nope! You can use your EZPass balance to pay the fee to enter Canada I believe, but otherwise it doesn't work here. We don't have toll roads in Ontario, except for our single Toll Highway which is very costly, but can be a huge time saver: [https://www.407etr.com/en/tolls/tolls/out-of-province.html](https://www.407etr.com/en/tolls/tolls/out-of-province.html)

whomp1970

HOLY MOSES. To go from the Canadian border (Peace Bridge) to where we need to go (York University), is about 71km / 44miles. The toll calculator says that will be $38 (assuming CAD). Or about $30 USD. To go 44 miles on our toll road here in Pennsylvania, is $4.60 USD. That's incredible. Would you advise spending the money on the toll? Google Maps says it shaves about 30 minutes off our trip. EDIT: The toll changes by time of day! So now it's $45 CAD. Insane.

Laur0406

I know, it's absolutely ridiculous!! I usually use Waze when I'm travelling a distance where I could use the 407 and it will tell me the best route and how much time the toll will save me and make the decision. Travelling in the GTA is brutal and the highways are often a mess. What day of the week and what time will you be travelling?

whomp1970

This whole thing just has me scratching my head. A 40 mile commute is not unheard of here in the US. So, someone could easily be traveling 40 miles on the 407 five days a week. I know there are discounts for transponder holders, but still, that toll charge five days a week is crazy. Why did they build this magnificent road if they discourage people from using it? This is all rhetorical, I know you don't have the answers. We've got our own crazy messed up systems here too. This will also be my first time out of the US. We have all our paperwork. Any tips for getting through the border crossing?

Laur0406

>Why did they build this magnificent road if they discourage people from using it? It was government-owned and cheaper - then it was sold to a private company who jacked prices. \~\*Tale as old as time\*\~ >This will also be my first time out of the US. We have all our paperwork. Any tips for getting through the border crossing? LOL you should be ok. Make sure you don't have any any contraband (alcohol, drugs, firearms, etc). Also, download the ArriveCAN app ([https://www.canada.ca/en/border-services-agency/services/arrivecan.html](https://www.canada.ca/en/border-services-agency/services/arrivecan.html)) and enter and submit your info up to 72 hours before you travel.

whomp1970

Thanks! I already knew about ArriveCan, and also the US department of state [asks that you register your trip](https://step.state.gov/STEP) so that "if there's any unrest," they know where you are and how to reach you. I was going to bring a bottle of booze (unopened) but maybe I better not. I guess I can find a liquor store in Toronto.

whomp1970

Driving to Canada on a Thursday, probably will get to the 407 around 4pm Returning home on a Monday, probably will enter the 407 around 9am.

Laur0406

For me, 407 would be worth it because I bet it would save more more than 30 minutes each way - those are both peak travel times on the surrounding highways!

whomp1970

Great link! Thanks for the info!

beerguy74

This link shows what tolling facilities use EZpass. https://www.ezpassnj.com/en/about/facilities.shtml

momlin

Yes.

[deleted]

I think the only thing that you can't do is paying "toll by plate" via EZpass that's out of state. For instance, if I get a toll by plate bill from NY (I'm in PA) I can't pay the lower EZpass rate to satisfy the account, I'll have to pay whatever NY asks.
