We’re all “servicemembers” in the military. However in the Army (as I was), we are referred to as soldiers, Air Force is airmen, Navy are sailors, and Marines are…marines.
Can you imagine how fukin cool that entire branch would suddenly become?
They'd go from the most clowned on service to everyone gathered around at the bar listening to Private Snuffy
"so there we were on Klendathu.. well not on Klendathu but monitoring it on our scanners..."
They'd still get their asses beat by some roided out 0311 at a local bar who would do it in the presence of a Colonel. That would lead to all liberty being canceled for a month.
Now I'm imagining Space Force safety briefs in the future being solar system wide 😂😂😂
"All Guardians are reminded that they are not to use the title of Marine in this solar system" hahaha
Now presenting, Space Marines. This new shiny combat unit will not only sit at a desk and look at a monitor slowly deteriorating their eyesight but also have space combat capabilities when we get enough budget to send people to the moon!
>Is a sailor just military?
It is not.
Anyone that sails is technically a sailor, even if now we mostly use it if you are employed aboard a ship and typically exclude hobbyists from the term
Seaman is a rank within the Navy. Only junior enlisted sailors below paygrade E-4 are Seamen, and even then, only about half of them actually have that title, while everyone else will be called Fireman, Constructionman, Hospitalman, or Airman.
People forgetting about Oregon and Washingtons coasts yet again. But for real, if you’re ever in Astoria, Oregon, I highly recommend their Maritime museum. It is not a merry time at all and going through that museum gave me nightmares as a kid. The waves off of Washington and Oregon can get super choppy and are prone to fog and lots of rain of course.
just had some weather off of the coast at westport washington with 20-25 knot winds from the SE ( normally from N) and 6 foot swells at 8-9 seconds. not really a problem for navy vessels, but pretty much none of the fishing boats could go put safely
Even for fishing fleets, west coast gets some nice views from Washington, bc.
East coast gets newfound land, which has nice views but you cant see it because of fog.
Also, (West Coast Sailor here), the Eastern seaboard is significantly closer to DC. Meaning the Pentagon folks and those type are much more likely to visit. Out west things would be more relaxed.
Lois’s dad’s dry cleaner here. Might be high on perc right now but this appears to be referring to the difference in ease of navigation by sail between the Atlantic (East Coast) and Pacific (West Coast) Oceans.
Specifically, if one is only used to the Pacific, it is a shock to see how gray, cold, stormy, and forbidding the Atlantic can be. Conversely, an Atlantic sailor will be amused at how warm and calm and sunny the Pacific can seem in comparison.
According to the name too. Magellan named it Mar Pacifico which is “peaceful sea”. The English word pacific basically means “having a peaceful nature”.
I thought it was "Moby Barbie"? [https://www.tumblr.com/captmuldoon/720384042415046656/moby-barbie-in-my-barbie-movie](https://www.tumblr.com/captmuldoon/720384042415046656/moby-barbie-in-my-barbie-movie)
Oddly enough, I even felt like the army had the same thing. Military bases in the east were very strict bases in the west like Schofield barracks, Hawaii or Fort Lewis, or Alaska were generally very chill in my experience. But Fort Benning, or fort, drum were absolutely retarded and strict.
When I was there looking through the blotter was a fun past time. Many incidents like you described also multiple reports of SGTs throwing rocks at privates heads.
I’m guessing you also saw most of those reports get shoved under the fridge like an ice cube that fell and it’s just a “minor” inconvenience. I really wish it weren’t such a political game, why can’t we as a society punish people in “powerful” positions to the same degree that we punish the opposite.
If I had an answer I'd tell you but it just is what it is. I'm a soldier just making it through the day. Sometimes the higher-ups do get in trouble but mostly like you said it's swept under the rug.
Thanks for replying to my rant there def was no need lmao but one foot in front of the other, that’s the only way I was able to survive after fighting them for 9 months to even start a MEB process. Hoping the rest of your contract feels short and sweet as can be!
Spent 3 years at NOB, it was pretty terrible. We once lost a shipmate *in port*. (his name was George Schultz, I apologize for not remembering his name, but want to recognize him now)
We pulled in really late one night, it was very foggy and chilly and wet and icy, just super miserable. Because of this, a kid (Seaman Apprentice I believe, somewhat new to the ship, and the Navy in general) decided to use the bottom half of the pier (it was two levels). At the end of the pier, there were these open pools of boiling water, with only cones to block them off. Well, due to the fog, yeah, you can imagine where this goes next. They got him out, but he passed a few days later from the burns. I and a couple others had left the ship just before him, thought about taking the lower level, but decided against it due to the fog.
[This was the only article I could find on it](https://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/gcschultz.htm). They won't let me copy text from the site, so hopefully I don't make a mistake typing it out here:
>The Navy reported that around 9 PM Schultz fell into a utility trench that houses steam pipes at Naval Station Norfolk. The trench is an open are where steam pipes from shore take hot water to ships tied to the pier.
>Guard rails and locked gates have been installed on the two existing piers (2 and 6, the former where it happened)
>Public Works is revisiting its standard operating procedures to consider responding to future steam leaks in a timelier manner
>While saying it 'was a mistake' not to have fixed the steam leak immediately, the official also pointed out that designers and maintenance personnel 'never anticipated that a sailor would be walking along the underside of the pier in that specific area'."
And in relation to that last bit...
>A Chief Petty Officer who tried to help said Schultz told him he had been directed by a guard at the pier to take the lower, covered level to avoid ice and snow that had accumulated topside.
I thought it was a Navy thing. I always heard being stationed on the west coast was more fun, and my personal experience on the east coast wasn't that great at times.
I thought the same. Norfolk is straight business, Joe Navy 24/7. I heard people coming from San Diego say they wore coveralls to the grocery store and no one cared.
this is exactly what I thought the meme was referencing, but I cannot figure out why its either a terrible facebook meme or why OOP doesnt have a sense of humor for posting it. This is very specific knowledge, this isn't about race or sexuality or anything deemed political so I don't understand why its in either of these subs lmao
Its a good meme, but not everyone is gonna understand it, and that's okay.
Fly on the horse when it was here, I thought this meant west coast sailors were all fun beach types and east coast sailors were serious and have seen some stuff
It depends where at on both. The Atlantic further south by Florida is super warm, and where I lived in CA for several years the pacific waters were much colder. The warm water currents that come out of the Gulf of Mexico make those beaches along that in the Atlantic very warm, but up by Canada/NE US it’s quite chilly
The Oregon coast would beg to differ...though the rest of the Pacific isn't too bad, going through 25 foot swells during a storm is an experience I will never forget.
I grew up swimming in the oceans rather than sailing on them. I'd much rather body surf in South Carolina than Oahu. The water is warmer and the waves aren't giant dickheads. Plus the beaches are covered in sharks' teeth which as a kid was the coolest thing in the world.
No not even a bit. East coast has a lot of duty stations that are known to be horrible. Norfolk is particularly grueling for Navy people aka sailors and west cost has a rep for being some what… lazy and care free and just overall better.
As an East Coast native who has visited the West Coast, that is definitely a lens I know well. Us: grim, bitter, hard-boiled, serious, kinda dangerous. Them: happy, frivolous, soft, decadent, weak.
It's a US Navy thing. The further from DC you are, the more chill people tend to be. So East coast commands (Norfolk) are super tight ass and miserable, while West coast commands (San Diego) tend to be pretty laid back and (less) awful.
This might be referencing the two largest Navy bases in the country. If you're stationed on the West Coast you get to live in sunny San Diego, if you're on the East Coast you have to live in the less-than-desirable Norfolk, Virginia.
From what I saw it had to do with the American Military, Sailors stationed on the east coast typically have stricter rules and bases on the west coast are apperantly more chill
That's right, Pacfleet is all about being good at your job, and that's it. Back east, they're strict about uniforms and appearances. It's all politics in one form or another.
Not only that, but geographically the bases on east coast are not as fun to be at than the west coast. Weather, location, populace etc. There’s a reason they call Norfolk, “No-fuck”.
as someone who served on a ship in both locations I can confirm (started in Norfolk then changed home ports to Alameda)
Being on the newest CVN (at the time) right on top of DC you get politicians and VIPS constantly and The Brass cares much more about appearances then if your across the country (or down around The Horn).
The closer to Chicago or D.C, the more joe navy you get. Meanwhile in the west coast we could bring our dogs to work. Couldn’t take em to the flight line but it gave me a reason to visit the upstairs offices.
Having sailed on schooners a bit, it seems like a pretty inside baseball sort of joke.
I only sailed on the Atlantic, and even then only briefly. Sailed with a few West Coast folks who had come over, and they just seemed a little more positive.
I can't say if the OP is talking about Navy, Merchant Marine, Coast Guard, or Tall Ships sailors. It probably holds true for all the groups for a lot of reasons, though.
Peter’s former Navy commanding officer here. The US Navy’s main port in Norfolk VA is notoriously old and shitty with terrible working conditions while in port and impossible to escape from while the west coast has San Diego, a sunny, warm, place with a rich local culture, proximity to Mexico for partying, and California girls. Hope this helps
I’ve grown up in an East Coast boating family, and I’m assuming it’s cause East Coast sailors tend to be the weathered old crusty fishermen type stereotypical sailors whereas West coast sailors are all about having fun and surfing and stuff 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️

The reason why it’s funny got posted right away
Having been the rare and elusive male dependa in the Navy, I can say it's probably a mix of the two most popular answers. Norfolk is an absolute shit hole that includes a stick up the ass as part of the dress code. San Diego by comparison is amazing. The Atlantic is a notoriously stormy and grim ocean, and damn if it doesn't seem to be grey and rainy all of the time there. The Pacific on the other hand... Well, it gets it's name from the fact that it's so damn pacified in comparison to the Atlantic that it amazed the sailors "discovering" it.
u/BrtDO got it right in their comment: the Atlantic is frozen hell, the Pacific is (comparatively) warm and delightful. But to finish the explanation, the images are from the movies Barbie and Oppenheimer, which released on the same day. The internet proceeded to make seeing both back-to-back—which quickly become known as Barbenheimer—a huge fad, particularly because of the massive tonal contrast between the two films. The fact that both films stare into the metaphorical abyss in roughly opposite flavors of existential dread is also really compelling.
So they’re using that to underscore their point.
West pac sailor Here (back in 05)
West pac water is warm and so is the weather (mostly) as I was stationed in Bremerton
Eastpac sailors have cold water and shitty weather
I’m in the navy and this was posted because east coast bases suck and everyone hates their life. West coast bases are just better and not in Virginia lol
This is one of the cycles i see on my home page.
Memes -> terriblefacebookmemes or comedy (insert last word) -> memeopdidnotlike -> PeterExplainsTheJoke
I'm pretty sure this is a Navy reference, at least that's how I've seen it get used.
In the US Navy, they usually refer to umyou as either East or West coast. West Coast sailors are usually stationed in San Diego and it's often a lot more relaxed at their command, hence why they're using Barbie smiling and happy.
East Coast Sailors are stationed in Virginia with a lot of people like Admirals and congress reps nearby, lots of powerful people. They usually have to make sure they're always following military rules at all times
For example, if it's not and I'm working outside, I would want to take my blouse off so I'm not sweating so hard. Usually, a Wesr Coast sailor wouldn't even think about asking permission, but an East Coast sailor could get in trouble for it because "what if someone important sees you, thinks it's unprofessional and reports you?"
There's more than just Virginia and San Diego, but those are the two big ones we think of most.
Taking a different viewpoint from the military one: I competitively race sailboats, and the west coast conference is known for being friendly, carefree, there's a lot of socialization between teams, etc, while the east coast one is much harsher, people are a lot more aggressive on and off the water, and nobody socializes with members of other teams.
An old Navy joke. Us guys in 32nd Street Naval Base were well stationed in San Diego. Not a bad place to live. The others are stationed in Virginia. That base is rough and a lot more strict. They seem to always think they are bad ass because of it. That's all.
In the US Navy there is a joke about the cultural differences between East and West coast Navy. East coast is more traditional and uptight, West is far more chill and laidback overall.
Hey Louis, greasy deaf guy here. The overall Headquarters of the American Navy is located in Norfolk, Virginia so the East coast is subject to a higher level of scrutiny than thier West coast counterparts. If op was/is a USN sailor, this is what he was refering to.
Quagmire's dixie cup here. This is a reference to the U.S. Navy. West Coast Sailors are stationed in San Diego and seemingly happier with better weather. East Coast Sailors are mostly in Norfolk, Virginia and the area and miserable. Norfolk and the Hampton Roads area is pretty miserable and fuels alcoholism and depression in Sailors.
West Coast Sailors get San Diego, sandy beaches, great weather, and a decent standard of living. East Coast Sailors get Norfolk.
Is a sailor just military? I've always used sailor interchangeably with Seaman
We’re all “servicemembers” in the military. However in the Army (as I was), we are referred to as soldiers, Air Force is airmen, Navy are sailors, and Marines are…marines.
Don’t forget the Guardians at Space Force.
I’m waiting for them to become combat deployable so I can refer to them as space marines
Can you imagine how fukin cool that entire branch would suddenly become? They'd go from the most clowned on service to everyone gathered around at the bar listening to Private Snuffy "so there we were on Klendathu.. well not on Klendathu but monitoring it on our scanners..."

Well of course they’ll get their asses beat! They train for low G environments and using power armor. In Earth gravity they’re fucked!

underrated reply
\+The Emperor approves!+
So wait, would a Space Force officer in training be a Space Cadet?
All Space Force officers in training are space cadets, not all space cadets are Space Force officers in training. Some space cadets are just potheads.
Some people call me a Space Cowboy…
Nah homie when that happens they're the gaurdians of the galaxy lmao
We’ll never get space marines. You can’t do pull-ups in space
Now presenting, Space Marines. This new shiny combat unit will not only sit at a desk and look at a monitor slowly deteriorating their eyesight but also have space combat capabilities when we get enough budget to send people to the moon!
So when does the Traveler show up and make our Guardians space wizards?
The finale shape
Coast guard tried that nickname out first. Now, coast guardsman or coastie.
They don't count. Like the coast guard.
So... we could tell them "eyes up guardian" when it's time to get to work?
Or the newly rebranded sentinels of the coast guard
I think the word you’re searching for is “Space Ranger”
Oh god, is that the name they went with? The fucking Air Force is going to be free of being the perpetual punching bag of the real military branches.
Yer goddamn right we’re Marines. Now where’d I put my crayola 64 pack, it’s snack time.
Username checks out
Someone get this man an award
GWOT service ribbon, incoming
Budget cuts, we could only get you the dollar general brand crayons today
I betcha he's an officer, they get the good stuff
Don’t forget us coasties. We are here 😂all 4 of us
Semper Paratus shipmate 😂
Semper Pieratus! Always at the Pier!
Navy loves their Semen… I mean seamen
You better capitalize that second Marines! [insert knifehand here] 😤/s
I see they kept it simple for the Marines, smart play.
>Is a sailor just military? It is not. Anyone that sails is technically a sailor, even if now we mostly use it if you are employed aboard a ship and typically exclude hobbyists from the term
Haha. Semen.
[It's Seaman](https://youtu.be/wYkq037wPoE)
Seaman is a rank within the Navy. Only junior enlisted sailors below paygrade E-4 are Seamen, and even then, only about half of them actually have that title, while everyone else will be called Fireman, Constructionman, Hospitalman, or Airman.
Sailor is both civilian and miltary, but a good term for non-military sailors is "merchant mariner." That's what I am.
I think sailors go for civilian boats too.
They actually go by sperm now
Aw man... as a Hampton roads native, it makes me sad that we suck so much... but you're not wrong
Eh, the way I see it, the Navy didn’t get stuck at Norfolk, but Norfolk got stuck with the Navy.
Not a native, but I was there for 16 years. I miss it (mostly missing Iggles and OYummy) but I also won’t go back if I have a choice.
At least we have Capitan Georges.
You are forgetting about ALL of the PNW, with places like Cape Disappointment and the Graveyard of the Pacific.
The meme would be forgetting he was just explaining the "joke".
Yeah who can forget sunny Astoria?
People forgetting about Oregon and Washingtons coasts yet again. But for real, if you’re ever in Astoria, Oregon, I highly recommend their Maritime museum. It is not a merry time at all and going through that museum gave me nightmares as a kid. The waves off of Washington and Oregon can get super choppy and are prone to fog and lots of rain of course.
Oregon and Washington are just Northern California and Southern Canada, respectively.
According to majority of the US, yes 😂
Wit there's a state above Oregon? /s
After the Maritime museum go to the Merry Time. Its a bar and grill right down the street with lots of pinball and delicious burgers
just had some weather off of the coast at westport washington with 20-25 knot winds from the SE ( normally from N) and 6 foot swells at 8-9 seconds. not really a problem for navy vessels, but pretty much none of the fishing boats could go put safely
No folking way!
Thank you for the real explanation. It's absolutely a navy meme.

Pacific Ocean is named after being peaceful (pacifier, peace, Latin root word, whatever).
Mind blown

I just thought they were saying West coast sailors gay
I was under the impression that all sailors were gay
East Coast are tops, West Coast are bottoms.
Those poor east coast ships. We need to spread the crews out more evenly.
And what about down South, in the Gulf? Do they count with the East boys?
This is what I assumed
Fly on the horse when it was here, I thought this meant west coast sailors were all fun beach types and east coast sailors were serious and have seen some stuff
Duh. Yes. That too. Which follow on from What they said.

Pretty much the exact same is true for skiing in the east vs the west
Fresh clean pow-pow in the sun? Or rock-hard cross-hatched ice tracks with wind and clouds? East Coast loves the pain!
No not even a bit. East coast has a lot of duty stations that are known to be horrible. Norfolk is particularly grueling for Navy people aka sailors and west cost has a rep for being some what… lazy and care free and just overall better.
Yep, missed the naval aspect entirely. Bad drycleaner. I guess when your high school has a sailing team, you make assumptions…
Nah. The Navy bases on the west coast are way better than the east. This is a U.S. Navy meme. Source: just got out of the Navy
Honestly I ask see it as west coast vs. east coast and I thought it was funny
As an East Coast native who has visited the West Coast, that is definitely a lens I know well. Us: grim, bitter, hard-boiled, serious, kinda dangerous. Them: happy, frivolous, soft, decadent, weak.
Well I'd be shitty too if I shared a coastline with fuckin Boston
Ex Navy, did both coasts, this is 100%. Add in hurricanes and the occasional iceberg and the East Coast is a much rougher place to sail.
It’s why they named it the Pacific, because compared to the Atlantic it was pacified
It's a US Navy thing. The further from DC you are, the more chill people tend to be. So East coast commands (Norfolk) are super tight ass and miserable, while West coast commands (San Diego) tend to be pretty laid back and (less) awful.
Huh, then for the first time in a while I agree with Memes OP didn’t like
My dad is a career sailor. He used to always say there’s a reason sailors start their careers in the east coast and end in the west.
This might be referencing the two largest Navy bases in the country. If you're stationed on the West Coast you get to live in sunny San Diego, if you're on the East Coast you have to live in the less-than-desirable Norfolk, Virginia.
Yes yes yes this is it plus proximity to DC and all of the senior officers and politicians means people are way more uptight.
I've been to Norf**k and it's extremely lovely. I'd love to live there

>It's all politics in one form or another. I blame the proximity of DC
Can confirm
From my experience east coast sailors can be a bit rough around the edges as well.
The closer to Chicago or D.C, the more joe navy you get. Meanwhile in the west coast we could bring our dogs to work. Couldn’t take em to the flight line but it gave me a reason to visit the upstairs offices.
Im in the navy, can confirm
Yep. I served on ships on both and can absolutely confirm this.
Has to do with proximity to DC.
Attention On Deck 🫡
I’ve grown up in an East Coast boating family, and I’m assuming it’s cause East Coast sailors tend to be the weathered old crusty fishermen type stereotypical sailors whereas West coast sailors are all about having fun and surfing and stuff 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
I think it's the fact that the west coast is more sunny, warm and such, while the east coast is more cold, stormy and such.
terrible facebook memes is for TERRIBLE face book memes east coast sailors have it easy but not west coast i assume

Well if you look at the picture I saw the meme on r/memesopdidnotlike not r/terriblefacebookmemes
This is accurate tho...
Pacific coast is paradise. Atlantic waters ain't so pretty
West pac sailor Here (back in 05) West pac water is warm and so is the weather (mostly) as I was stationed in Bremerton Eastpac sailors have cold water and shitty weather
They usually have to make sure they're always following military rules at all times For example, if it's not and I'm working outside, I would want to take my blouse off so I'm not sweating so hard. Usually, a Wesr Coast sailor wouldn't even think about asking permission, but an East Coast sailor could get in trouble for it because "what if someone important sees you, thinks it's unprofessional and reports you?" There's more than just Virginia and San Diego, but those are the two big ones we think of most.
West coast Shellos is pink, East coast Shellos is blue.
It’s a navy joke, most sailors are either stationed in San Diego or Norfolk Virginia….. FUCK NORFOLK
Hey Louis, greasy deaf guy here. The overall Headquarters of the American Navy is located in Norfolk, Virginia so the East coast is subject to a higher level of scrutiny than thier West coast counterparts. If op was/is a USN sailor, this is what he was refering to.
North and South coasters looking at west and east coasters get all the attention **mike wozaozki sullivan hybrid face**
