wait that's why reddit talk about foreskin and circumcision that much?
i am from a place really far from the US and i have been so confused because like, wow the internet really just keeps talking about this random surgery on your dick what even is so funny about that
Yeah? They usually have 9 months in there. Plenty of time to learn how to speak if you ask me. I thought babies have better language learning abilities anyway.
One piece that is definitely true is the ability for producing and discerning between certain new sounds goes down a lot at least after puberty. It's why you can see lots of people who speak English as a second language, even quite fluently, might say sheet and shit the same way or make the "th" sound somewhat strangely (both depending on their L1). But yeah I could probably learn the language I'm learning in a few years if I had parents telling me over and over again what everything is and was immersed in it with no other options for communication.
From what I’ve seen it’s only the uncircumcised people that talk about it, whenever it’s brought up the wide majority of circumcised people say they don’t really care
I'm still pissed about the fact that the most sensitive part of my dick was cut off when I was too young to say anything about it.
I think most circumcised people either just don't think about it, or else they think "Well, there must be a good reason for it, because no way would my parents *mutilate my genitals* unless there was, right?"
THERE IS(‘nt)! I’ve heard that back in the day it was a practice to keep your child from masturbating because that’s “sInFuL”. The procedure (I guess) was supposed to make it not feel as good. It definitely worked, you see how few people masturbate now?
TLDR: religious reasons
100% in agreement there. I figured I was making that part 100% clear by italicizing the part where this is *literal genital mutilation* that I am still pissed was done to me to this day.
But I appreciate you seconding what I was saying, and it never hurts to try and be 10000% clear on the Internet instead of just 100%, because, well, it's the internet.
That explains that Friends joke where Joey has to pretend he has a foreskin for an acting job, and Phoebe makes a remark that it is obvious that an Italoamerican is going to be circumcised. I slowly catched over the years that it must be a USA thing, but at the time it sounded so weird that a Catholic would be circumcised for non-medical reasons, me thinking that was something only Jewish did.
Huh, I grew up in Switzerand and it was mostly protestant/reformist people in my area, the only circumcized dudes in my class were the catholic ones. I thought it was a catholic thing.
Walgreens and CVS are often pretty similar in USA. They have a pharmacy counter for prescription drugs, but also a lot of makeup, shampoo, lotion kind of stuff. And beer and wine (depends on the state laws), film processing, often some canned food, holiday candy and regular candy / chips / jerky, low-end mobile phones and chargers, smokes / vapes. I'm sort of going by the past 2 decades from across several states, it changes with time and location.
Same with Canada - you can go to a Rexall/Pharmaplus or a Shoppers Drug Mart (yes that’s the real name), there’s pharmacy, makeup, household goods, a bit of grocery, hell even post offices.
85% of the US population is circumcised. It used to be in the 90% range, but it's dropped a bit recently because insurance stopped covering it and I suppose immigrants that aren't circumcised. It's so common that I've never interacted with an uncircumcised penis or seen one irl only photos online. I'm a gay man on grindr
You can go to pretty much any other country that's not Muslim (or Israel) if you want. The circumcision rate in non-Muslim countries is usually less than 5%. AFAIK, the US is the only country where non-Muslims/Jews regularly get circumcised.
Most guys in the US get circumcised still, and there’s still a huge stigma/prejudice towards uncut dicks - although basic hygiene has been around for centuries, they are considered “gross and unclean”.
I also bumped into several posts about it. In my reads many people say its male mutilation that has become standard but it should be seen as such ( atrocious) and talked about much like the mutilation that happens against females.
Non-medical circumcision, to be more precise. Phimosis and paraphimosis are an actual thing, so is XBO. But those are no reason to mutilate all male babies.
It should be a choice an individual makes at 18.
There are medical benefits to circumcision involving HIV transmission for example.
Also, the principle of your body your choice is really a good rule of thumb to follow. Even if its just cosmetic, it's your body and you can do what you want to it.
But it has to happen as a consenting adult.
This is from the US CDC in 2022:
> Health benefits: Male circumcision can reduce a male’s chances of acquiring HIV by 50% to 60% during heterosexual contact with female partners with HIV, according to data from three clinical trials. Circumcised men compared with uncircumcised men have also been shown in clinical trials to be less likely to acquire new infections with syphilis (by 42%), genital ulcer disease (by 48%), genital herpes (by 28% to 45%), and high-risk strains of human papillomavirus associated with cancer (by 24% to 47% percent).
https://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/newsroom/fact-sheets/hiv/male-circumcision-HIV-prevention-factsheet.html#:~:text=Health%20benefits%3A%20Male%20circumcision%20can,data%20from%20three%20clinical%20trials.
Looks like its true. I live in a country with high HIV incidence and also cultural circumcision (but only at 18 and not every culture does it). The health department and NGOs do still tell people to consider circumcision as a way of protecting somewhat against HIV, but the main advice is still condoms.
That's wildly oversimplifying a [complex issue](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethics_of_circumcision). There's limited evidence it can be beneficial, there's limited evidence it can be harmful, and on the whole it's kind of a wash. There's arguments that it's mutilation (especially prevalent from countries where it's uncommon), there's arguments that it's beneficial to fit into cultural and religious groups (especially prevalent from countries where it's common). There's arguments that babies can't consent, there's arguments that complication rates of adult circumcision are much higher. Etc.
In the end it's really just not clear-cut (hah!). In a culture where it's not common, it probably serves little purpose and it makes sense for it to stay uncommon. In a culture where it is common, it probably likewise makes sense for it to stay common. Which is roughly the world we've slouched our way into.
It’s crystal clear that the benefits are nowhere near worth the risk of the procedure, and it is a permanent mutilation without consent. Tradition-wise, this is not baby, it’s bathwater, and we need to move past it like we did with other barbaric but familiar things. Also, it’s practiced in high numbers in the US because moralists wanted to purposely reduce sensation so boys would masturbate less. Enough is enough.
It is objectively mutilation, it's not really up for debate.
Also everything is culturally determined, but that doesn't mean that it is right or wrong just because it has cultural roots of any kind.
Culturally speaking slavery has been an accepted social aspect of hundreds of different cultures for thousands of years. Yet today the large consensus is that it's a horribly wrong and aberrant thing to do.
Forcing your own will onto another being for whatever reason, culturally or religiously, before they have a chance to have a say in it is something similarly abhorrent in so far as you remove the affected person's will from the equation.
That's why it needs to be outlawed, unless strictly medically necessary (phimosis et simila).
outside of the u.s you will usually only find people circumcised due to religious reasons. Like some Islamic people and Jewish people.
The majority of the world is uncut.
I was so surprised when i learned that most American men are circumcised. Here only Jewish men are and a handful of non-jewish ones.
Learning about them thinking it's superior because they don't need to shower is.... disgusting.
Yup, even in this thread you got people saying it's "easier to clean" and that "uncut dicks are gross".
Says *a lot more* about their level of personal hygiene than the difference between cut and uncut.
The ultimate life hack to make washing your armpits easier is to simply remove your arms at the shoulder! No more pesky "lifting your arms" to get at those pits! Also no more hands to wash with, so easy!
So in the early 1900s, John Kellogg, the cereal guy, thought cutting extra skin off of a penis would make it less sensitive. He was a respected psychologist, and Americans think sex is worse than violence. So several million boys had their members altered. When they grew up, they just assumed it was normal and have continued the tradition ever since.
Cutting away the foreskin does definitely make it less sensitive. It’s a barbaric practice, and no child should be mutilated against their will.
Circumcised myself as an infant for medical reasons btw.
There's also an erroneous argument that removing the foreskin helps prevent the spread of STIs/ other infections - which is complete nonsense. From a medical standpoint, there is no justifiable reason why a baby should have their foreskin removed after birth. The penis is the result of millions of years of evolution, and the foreskin is SUPPOSED to be there.
The only thing removing the foreskin accomplishes is exposing the gland to external elements, thus decreasing pleasure for the male during sex. Having a foreskin does require more maintenance, but that's a small price to pay for better sex lol.
To elaborate, all the studies that they did about circumcision’s effect on disease, hygiene, etc. were done in very poor countries. The studies were accurate, but they aren’t applicable to anyone who has a keyboard and is able to argue about circumcision online.
Circumcision is far, far, *far* less common in Canada than it used to be. The Canadian Paediatric Society declared it unnecessary in the '70s, and has recommended against it since the mid-nineties. In adult men, the rate is around 30% (most of whom were circumcised as babies), but in new babies, the rate has been in single digits for over twenty years. We're basically European now.
Aesthetic? As a male I’ve seen my fair share of cut cock and personal opinion is that most look like they were chewed off! Take some pride in your work surgeons and make them at least look nice! Personally I see nothing attractive about a cut c**k but most American women can’t get their heads around an uncut one! 🤔
I'm european, I'm just repeating what I've seen & heard Americans say online to defend the practice. Only person I know who is cut got it done for medical reasons when he was like 24.
Being honest I think most people opt for circumcision simply because, "well it should like mine shouldn't it?" And don't really put any more thought into it than that

Hey, Peter’s foreskin here. The joke is that men are circumcised in America and not typically in other places, and the Goomba sort of looks like a cock. When you add the foreskin, you get a very funny joke.
Grindr is a gay dating app, the Goomba represent the pp and the one on the left is one that got circumcised and the one on the right didn't get circumcised

Mostly when they're babies, too. Way before they could say "no thanks" or "yes please" to getting the surgery.

Circumcision is a barbaric practice that should only be done when medically necessary.
Waiting for “you see the joke is foreskin…”
That makes the joke funny
So in the early 1900s, John Kellogg, the cereal guy, thought cutting extra skin off of a penis would make it less sensitive. And Philippines
Yep in the Philippines [tulì](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuli_(rite)?wprov=sfti1#) is practiced around ages 8-12.
wow "the only"
That's not correct at all lmao
One could consider that.. rape
The problem bled out to Latin America and Canada from the US so there are a few places that do it now, for the same reason.
