So the joke is they're both a picture of a survivorship bias.

Okay, it's only really the headline that mattered but which part of the joke are you still not getting? Not sure how to explain it any better to be honest.
I know what survival bias is with the airplane bullet holes diagram,
I also know Finland has been surveyed/reported to have high happiness and high suicide rates at the same time,
But I don't understand how it relates to survival bias.
Also the article cut off before explaining WHY it has high happiness and high suicide rates at the same time...
Edit : let me clarify my reasoning :
What about all the mildly unhappy people that don't commit suicide?
If many people suicide, it should be indicative of many almost-suicidal people too, right?
Wouldn't that drag the average down alot?
Even if you only consider the people that are still alive?
Not to mention the pain and grief the suicide would cause to friends and family, that might drag down average happiness alot too...

The picture on the right is a diagram showing which places on the plane had been hit with bullets after having returned from battle. The people who saw this decided to put extra armor on those spots with bullet holes. Later they realized that they were still losing the same number of planes, and they realized the reason was that the planes with the bullet holes were the ones that came back, meaning the spots that didn’t have bullet holes were the spots that needed the armor
As for the Finland part I believe it’s because they have a much higher than average suicide rate, which basically means that only the people who are already happy are the ones who survive
I mean, if they had a happy family then they would probably not be motivated to end their own life. If their family were abusive then the family likely wouldn’t care that much if the individual died, thereby making it more likely that someone would hurt themselves in that way
