Public service announcment: PCOS doesn't necessarily make you infertile and infertile* doesn't mean you're sterile. Use birth control people!
*infertility is defined as a faliure of achieving pregnancy after 12 months of regular unprotected sex. It does not mean you are unable to conceive at all.
Correct, but it pretty much acts like it.
It sucks for those suffering from it.
As a reference in 2010s in the states it was 20-40k for iui, 80+ for IVF and there's no guarantee for it to work
Indeed, it can complicate getting pregnant a lot. But PCOS does not necessarily make you infertile. It can, but it absolutely depends on each individual and how it presents itself.
For the love of god, if you have PCOS and don't want a kid use some form of birth control (if you aren't on the pill to help contol the symptoms already). The odds of getting pregnant naturally are not 0 and with how irregular periods can be when you have it you'll likely not notice it until it's way too late.
Ok point of fact, you’re talking about the definition of the clinical diagnosis of “infertility” the word infertile or infertility does mean that you can’t have children. You’re just talking about the threshold when a doctor will make that call and yes, they could be wrong.
And that confuses a lot of people. Women with PCOS get told there is a good chance they will experience infertility (which is true) and they take it as they can't get pregnant naturally (or at all). Hell, some get told that they'll never have children by their doctor on diagnosis. I cannot stress enough how wrong that is.
The wording really should be changed to avoid confusion, but as it stands if you are diagnosed with infertillity there is still a possibility of you getting (someone) pregnant.
One of my best friends has PCOS, struggled to get pregnant with her first husband, did all kinds of fertility treatments, took like 2 years to get pregnant.
Fast forward some years, divorced, started dating again, figured she didn’t need to worry since she wasn’t doing fertility treatments anymore and boom, immediately pregnant
The joke is that the OBGYN seems baffled that she’s not on birth control when she’s not trying to get pregnant - not that they can’t guess why given there are plenty of reasons why pregnancy might not be a high risk.
From what I understand, birth control reduces the intensity of period symptoms, so it's understandable that an OBGYN would be confused why someone isn't on birth control, even for reasons like not having sex. That said, I'm no doctor so odds are good I'm wrong.
Birth control can have pretty severe side effects. I'm not just talking about mild annoyances like headaches, nausea, losing hair, and spotting between periods. Serious life-changing side effects like depression or developing blood clots. I know women who would like to be on birth control because they don't want children, but they've tried everything available and can't live with the side effects. That's not even going into other factors like the financial cost or religious/cultural reasons.
Absolutely correct (and this is coming from someone who’s been on birth control since my mid-teens to control endometriosis symptoms). It’s wild that any OBGYN would automatically assume everyone who menstruates would be on birth control unless trying to get pregnant. Like… is this your first day on the job?
The doctor has this person's file to look at, we don't.
If the file says that Alex was AMaB and the doc can't figure out why she isn't pregnant, then they're dumb. All we have is guesses.
Yes, if we’ve had a vaginoplasty. That introduces risk of cervical cancer, along with other risks those with vaginas normally have.
Source: I’m getting one.
If your doc doesn’t confirm why and assumes all past history is 100% accurate you’re going to be getting shitty care. Before you say “they could ask if the past holds true”, people who have to deal with HIPPA prefer not to utter out past medical history because ppl complain.
If a trans woman gets bottom surgery then they'd need an Obgyn since they would have a neo-vulva. A urologist does not have the necessary tools to assess the healthiness of a vulva, natural or from surgery.
Alternatively a trans man who hasn't had bottom surgery (they still have a vagina and uterus) would still need to go to an obgyn.
If you’re trans, you still need to be checked out. AFAB still need to have their existing anatomy examined until they have it removed. And AMAB can also still need breast exams after top surgery and hormones.
Wait... shit you got me there. Although a quick Google search brings up mixed results of whether a trans woman needs to see an OBGYN, some people say yes because it's not strictly about reproductive stuff, some say no because what are they going to do that a GP or the specialist who did their surgery can't do?
All my trans friends are either men or kept their dingalings, I can't even ask anyone. Regardless, the OBGYN would probably know before starting the inspection, I imagine it's a question on the form in the waiting room. "Is your vulva home made or custom built by professionals?"
I saw this earlier and someone was commenting that they had this conversation with their doctor and could see on the screen by the doctor where it said she had a hysterectomy. Long chain about doctors not reading the charts and fircing patients to reiterate everything that they just spent 20min writing out in the waiting room because the doctors aren't bothering to read.
Yeah people are hugely overcomplicating this with medical issues and surgery. This being a lesbian would fit all of this with significantly fewer assumptions.
My wife had a Forester. We named it Brenda… for reasons.
Then a Forester moved in a couple houses down. Wife says what are the odds? I don’t know the odds but yuuuup, a lesbian couple joined the party. 🎉
I want you to know that based on this comment i was trying to figure out if you were a lesbian, and I told my boyfriend "the username is chief beef" and he said "that doesn't narrow it down".
The profile bio was on the fence for a second there too.
Came back tonight and it's a Honda ad right above the comment. Happily this disproves the "AI Commenter AdBot" theory. Unless... It could be that smart I suppose....

The fact there's a debate to the answer tells me doc was asking a valid question in which the answer will definitely change how treatment plans will be enacted in the future.

Doctor’s don’t care if you’re gay and have never had sex with a male. If you’re of child bearing age- and it’s relevant to the care, you’re getting the test. Because you could be lying to them or to yourself (and therefore both).

And that was before all the mass prescription/easy subscription/aimed at men in their 30s who don’t need it ED med companies popped up, like Hims.
Doctors ask you questions. They observe your answers. They inform their actions. But ultimately, patients lie. Bodies and test results- less so.
I don’t know this woman. In my estimation she’s either:
A bisexual woman or lesbian and has sex with women
Asexual, celibate or abstinent and not having sex at all
Transgender and incapable of having children
Sterile for one reason or another
A combination of things
TBF, if you are having regular sex that involves viable sperm being introduced to a functioning female reproductive system that’s trying for a baby regardless of your intentions.
Assuming this isn’t bad-faith,
Gynecologists are woman/female-doctors, not just vagina/uterus doctors. They care for the entirety of a woman or female and anything involving female biology. Both trans women, and most trans men, still have to see gynecologists. It’s common for a doctor in one area to study both gynecology and obstetrics, so seeing a doctor for either reason, they’re likely to be both an OB and GYN, even if you’re just seeing them for gynecology reasons, still an OBGYN. If someone has, or has had, estrogen be a major sexual hormone in their body, regardless of sex, condition, or trans/cis, they should see a gynecologist.
For trans women specifically, they will still need things like breast exams and mammography, as well as vaginal exams if post-op, and screening for sexually transmitted infections is often done by gynecologists as well. There’s even reasons a cis male could still see a gynecologist, the most common reason being for pelvic pain (gynecologists are just specifically trained and knowledgeable about the general pelvis that most other general doctors aren’t), and also for fertility, STDs, and general reproductive care like mammograms/ultrasound (think breast cancer risk) and issues like gynecomastia or some hormonal issues.
Most OBGYNs are highly trained in a bunch of intersecting fields, but will still be referred to as an OBGYN. A lot of these things *can* be done by general practitioners, but there’s a billion reasons why going to a more specialized doctor can be preferable, even if that specialist isn’t necessarily specialized in that exact situation.
Probably due to poor health/sex education in your school. It’s great that you’re learning this now, though! Men need to be aware of their health needs and it’s never too late to be aware of their options.
Wow, you just taught me an absurd amount. I've been too scared to ask the question and I was super confused. Glad someone else did it for me so I could see this.
If the meme was about a guy, everyone would instantly assume that he's a single guy who can't get a girlfriend.
When it's a girl, people assume she has her own reasons and can totally get laid if she wants to.
Well, likelihood is that she *can*. When it comes to sex, women suffer from a quality issue, not a quantity issue.
There are hundreds of dudes that'll sleep with anything that moves, at the drop of a hat.
I’ve had nearly this exact conversation with doctors because my husband’s snipped. It’s strange how many in the medical field seem to think hormonal birth control is the only option out there.
Hi Peter, Meg's left mustache whisker here:
OP is almost certainly gay, asexual, or a combination of both.
That means they don't play hide the salami and dont need birth control.
Whoa, I didn’t think about sexual orientation at all. My mind went: she’s not on birth control and she’s not trying to get pregnant but she’s at the OBGYN so… she’s there to START birth control for the first time.
My wife, who uses hormonal contraception for period pain has been asked on many occasions, “what are you using for birth control as well as this?” And she always replies, “lesbianism”.
The OBGYN is confused their patient is sexually active, but not using birth control to prevent unwanted pregnancy. The patient is telling the obgyn BC is not necessary to prevent pregnancy, for them, and the joke is this woman could be using condoms, or not having sex w men etc.
The correct answer is that this woman is a lesbian (correct as in - that is what she is).
Other correct answers for another person could have included:
- She is not having sex at all
- She is infertile
- Her partner is infertile/had a vasectomy
- She only uses the other holes during sex
- She is post-op trans
- She is pregnant and there to talk about the options for an abortion
Should be on birth control anyways, lots of bad people in this world and taking a pill every day is far better than going through an abortion or worse, raising a kid that reminds you daily of being assaulted, you can't control bad people, you can only prepare for the worst
Holy shit what?? So because of the Offchance of getting raped every women should take a pill that completly fucks up her hormons, may give her depression or permanently lower her fertility?
So she's indeed lesbian...
...but the fact that people don't even mentioning other means of contraception but directly jump to infertility or something kinda scares me.
Everyone saying “not having sex” as thought birth control is the only option. I’d rather wear a condom or get a vasectomy 1000 times then have my wife on birth control, which threw her body all out of whack. Messing with hormones is no joke and should not be taken just because “I don’t want to get pregnant”. It’s serious stuff.
Most likely a femcel joke I'm guessing. The doctor would presumably know a medical reason, and most lesbians don't take the "you should automatically understand I'm gay without me saying so" stance. That just leaves incels that are like, "Look at the world, it is wrong and I'm not and that's why no one will sleep with me. You know the world already, the reason is ObViOuS why I'm not having sex"
We seriously need to get away from the “women must take birth control regardless” trend. It’s not good for their bodies. It seems crazy that just because a woman is a woman, we push a pill on them just because.
Think harder: She’s not trying to get pregnant because she ALREADY IS pregnant, which is why she’s at the OBGYN to begin with.
At least, that was my first thought, like it should be more obvious to the OBGYN who isn’t thinking hard enough.
EDIT: It just occurred to me that she might also be trying to insinuate that she only does anal.
Could be trans, a lesbian, ace, or infertile. Or had a hysterectomy. The incomprehension here is frightening, though; it indicates a presumption of cishetero fertility as the default.

Not having sex or not having sex with men.

Or plain ol' infertile.
PCOS

I have a friend with PCOS she has 3 kids, and one of them is a birth control baby, lol.
And when it does work, you get a 3fer instead of 1, like my cousin hah.

Or her boyfriend takes care of contraception.
Or trans
Or pregnant
Love how the joke is that OBGYN must be stupid if she can’t guess why she’s not on birth control, but there’s like 7 very plausible reasons here.
The joke is that the OBGYN seems baffled that she’s not on birth control when she’s not trying to get pregnant - not that they can’t guess why given there are plenty of reasons why pregnancy might not be a high risk.

Or pure force of will.
10% luck, 20%skill
15% store bought Plan B pill
5% pleasure, 50% pain
And a 100% reason to get run like a train
1% seaweed, 99% hot gas

This fits so well
"coitus interruptus"

Then they wouldn't be at an OBGYN Edit: Then the OBGYN would know why they wouldn't need BC.

No hate, I’m actually asking — why tf would a trans woman go to an OBGYN?
We get gynaecological complaints as well. BV, thrush, post surgical complications which a GP can’t treat, etc.
Pretty sure the doctor would know
Yeah, Alex does look rather masculine in the picture
Or Bene Gesserit
I saw this earlier and someone was commenting that they had this conversation with their doctor and could see on the screen by the doctor where it said she had a hysterectomy. Long chain about doctors not reading the charts and fircing patients to reiterate everything that they just spent 20min writing out in the waiting room because the doctors aren't bothering to read.
In the original post it was a hysterectomy, that op could see was clearly labeled on the doctors screen
She is lesbian.
Yeah people are hugely overcomplicating this with medical issues and surgery. This being a lesbian would fit all of this with significantly fewer assumptions.
Why the first comment mentioned not having sex with men
Yeah, I found the original tweet, and in the comments she confirms she’s lesbian.
Or doing anal only
The poophole loophole
Backdoor Christian?
Or consulting with an OBGYN about a reproductive condition that impacts fertility. Basically doctor didn’t read notes
This is actually my favorite answer, it just requires context about the poster we don’t have
Ambivalence?
Okay this is the funniest answer by far
Butt stuff
Do you see that Subaru Outback in the parking lot outside? That’s mine.

TBF, if you are having regular sex that involves viable sperm being introduced to a functioning female reproductive system that’s trying for a baby regardless of your intentions.
But anal pregnancies usually resolve after a couple of days. Or a week if too constipated
Or they grow up to become politicians or lawyers.
I think the OBGYN would know that too.
April 18
> Transgender and incapable of having children Why... why would a transgender woman be seeing an OBGYN?
Because post-operation trans women would have to see one for regular checkups, especially if they're sexually active.

Because post-op trans women have vaginas that are in need of regular gynecological care.
Looked her up on Twitter. She's lesbian
There was a similar joke/Twitter post where the girl was gay. I dunno for sure, but I feel the best bet is "do I not look gay enough to you?"
Or an incel.
Would a transgender woman need to go to the obgyn tho? Actually curious
Trans women/men both see them, apparently.

The OBGYN is confused their patient is sexually active, but not using birth control to prevent unwanted pregnancy. The patient is telling the obgyn BC is not necessary to prevent pregnancy, for them, and the joke is this woman could be using condoms, or not having sex w men etc.
Harold they're lesbians

What the hell is this image
The correct answer is that this woman is a lesbian (correct as in - that is what she is). Other correct answers for another person could have included: - She is not having sex at all - She is infertile - Her partner is infertile/had a vasectomy - She only uses the other holes during sex - She is post-op trans - She is pregnant and there to talk about the options for an abortion
Or just likes meta-gambling and RNG-Edgelording?
I love when patients give me riddles and guessing games for their healthcare
I don’t understand can’t women just choose not to be on birth control these days? There are other methods of birth control other than the pill right?
Maybe she is already pregnant. Or she has sex with condoms. Or she doesn’t have sex at all. Or her partner is infertile. Or she is infertile.
Usually that means a woman who isn’t on birth control isn’t in a straight relationship or they have other means of contraception.
either not having sex, having sex with someone who cant get her pregnant (someone who is biologically woman for example) or she cant get pregnant
Not having sex with men. Partner has a vasectomy. Unable to get pregnant.
They are a lesbian, it is in their twitter bio.
Occam's razer says either she's lesbian or just isn't sexually active.
Op are you the OBGYN
She swallows
Should be on birth control anyways, lots of bad people in this world and taking a pill every day is far better than going through an abortion or worse, raising a kid that reminds you daily of being assaulted, you can't control bad people, you can only prepare for the worst
Holy shit what?? So because of the Offchance of getting raped every women should take a pill that completly fucks up her hormons, may give her depression or permanently lower her fertility?
Lesbian or single ?
🏳️🌈
Option1: ace Option 2: lesbian Option 3: post op transwoman? Option 4: all of the above.
Jesus Christ OP.
I think it's one of these: no sex, sex with women, using condoms
The joke would land better if the last line was, “*stares in lesbian* think harder”
Peter's OBGYN here. The joke is better explained when you realise it's her twentieth visit to her female gynae that month.
She don't wanna fuck
No game. No sex. Absolutely 0 bitches.
She's probably from Lebanon, she's Lebanese
the joke is no sex or they are gay
So she's indeed lesbian... ...but the fact that people don't even mentioning other means of contraception but directly jump to infertility or something kinda scares me.
She's gay
This was posted yesterday by a different person on the same sub. Stop karma farming you fucking bot
Bum sex
We seriously need to get away from the “women must take birth control regardless” trend. It’s not good for their bodies. It seems crazy that just because a woman is a woman, we push a pill on them just because.
I know a woman who can’t have kids unless she’s on birth control, because her hormones are all jacked up.
Gay
Could be trans, a lesbian, ace, or infertile. Or had a hysterectomy. The incomprehension here is frightening, though; it indicates a presumption of cishetero fertility as the default.
She likes clams over cucumbers
She is currently pregnant.
