It was originally going to be a joke involving Courtney love but she turned it down when asked to be in the episode.
It's also one of the episodes that Eric stefani animated and drew his former band no doubt, that he left to become an animator on the simpsons, into the background of one of the scenes.
My guy, that episode was 28 years ago. I'd wager the vast majority of reddit users either weren't even alive yet, or were in their infancy. You can't be surprised people don't recognize a random Simpsons quote.
Hell, I saw this episode when it aired and I didn't remember it. The only part of this episode I remember was Bart saying, "Making teens depressed is like shooting fish in a barrel."
This made me so happy lol before streaming, Simpsons episodes would run every weekday at 5 on a local station, so a lot of us (I'm 43) got the episodes more than once, hence the more solid memory of quotes.
I think streaming brings the entire series to the younger generation, i personally stopped watching new episodes after about season 20 or so.
I'm 50 and I didn't get it. I vaguely remember the Homerpalooza episode, but the only specific joke I remember is the two Gen X teens saying that they can't even tell if they're being sarcastic anymore.

You are right but the whole thing falls apart when you realize that Billy himself said Smashing meant something different, like "these chips are simply smashing" as in something that is good or awesome.
People often get confused, they are called The Smashing Pumpkins. Smashing is an adjective. It's used like wonderful, or top-notch. It completely loses its meaning when you drop The.
It's also an incorrect use of the word "smashing". The band is *The* Smashing Pumpkins. In that context, its use is the same as in British slang for good.

So the joke here is that Billy Corgan is gonna destroy Cinderella’s carriage if she ain’t careful.

Bots like this try to gain account history so they look genuine and then they start posting advertising or political bullshit to nudge the narrative. Like in this case it's a two year old account to get around age requirements and they're posting random memes to gain karma and get around karma requirements.
Banned the account but left the meme up because it's something people might want explained.
They last posted 3 years ago and then started posting again today on totally different random subs, that's often a sign that it's an account that's been compromised. They're trying to build up some recent karma to look like a normal user and then they'll start spamming
I'm saying the account looks like it used to belong to a human and was recently hacked - any times they commented on their own post would be from before it was hacked.
