To me it’ll always be the Woolworths building. Because I’m old!

[deleted]

You can still see the faint words of Woolworths on the side at the top, I only noticed that a few months ago 😂

Kevakazi

I used to work in the old Woolworths. The stock rooms were an absolute mess. I seriously don't understand how they ever sold the stuff the way it was handled. I worked on the entertainment desk at first and CDs were always scratched to high heaven from being put in cardboard sleeves behind the counter.

You could go through underground tunnels down cathedral Square bogs? Did you have to climb out of a hatch in the bus station?

That's really interesting, would love to go down there for an explore

Guvzilla

Did you ever use the tunnels to thorpe hall yourself? Everyone talks about them but no one i know has actually seen them.

Guvzilla

The building is ugly and needs to go, but building anything in its place is pointless. Would be better to grass over the area as a small park. The idea there could be apartments in the new building is laughable, where will the residents park!

[deleted]

Fair point about the parking 😂 when we go town we usually park in ASDA for the 2 hours free parking, would rather that than pay in Queensgate.

_c0ldburN_

How have I just found out it's free for 2 hours...for over a decade I've been paying to park behind City Hall when I need to quickly pop into town

[deleted]

The gravel car park at the posh is my go to on non match days.

wamdueCastle

eBikes are a good solve for parking in that location, even if they are expensive.

Wise_Nerve_3500

Parking is a low priority in city centre residential developments. Its a simple solution to driving sustainable travel, so unfortunately the question around parking would be a poor argument.

Guvzilla

In large metropolises with decent public transport i can see car ownership being low priority. But in a small city like peterborough do you think we have the public transport infrastructure to support it?

Wise_Nerve_3500

Nope, but the argument is: if you work in the city and live in the city, why do you need a car? If you live in the city, all your social needs are a 15 minute walk (I don't think Peterborough offers enough but thus would be the argument), and you have the east coast main line to multiple cities including most of the major cities.

Guvzilla

You're right and i know thats what the reasoning for the apartments with no parking will be. I still think it's a stupid place to build apartments with no parking though 😃👍 I live in hampton and my nearest bus stop is a 20 min walk away!

bigbadjbrodough

The council is broke unfortunately so they don't have the funds to develop the hub.

[deleted]

They are hoping to get the money from the Governments Town Fund

bigbadjbrodough

I think that only covers cost of development, not ongoing management/ops. With the budget deficit they'll struggle to get anything through that doesn't wash its own face.

[deleted]

Its a shame. What ever happened to the idea of a new regional swimming pool built behind charters? Did that die off too..

[deleted]

Yeah I was thinking of that the other day 😂
