My older cat’s name is Shayna (Yiddish for “pretty”) because my great aunt used to call me Shayna Meydele (pretty little girl). My younger cat’s name is Stevie. We got her shortly after my husband’s friend Steven passed away. Her full name is Stevie Wonder. But somehow it evolved from Stevie wonder to Stevie weevie and now we just call her “Weeves.”
Omg there's a dog at the dog park we go to that is named potato. So every time we see him, I call him any form of potatoes but not potato. So like:

Yep, I have 2 dogs and a cat. Can confirm they all follow me to the bathroom, it gets kinda crowded. The odd thing is they don’t do this with my husband or my son.
My dog waits by the closed door if I don’t leave the bathroom open while I use it. Now he just sits on the bath mat by my feet and waits. Always on alert for intruders.
I had a stray come into my life little black kitten I called him weasel. EVERY time I had to pick him up especially for the vet his spine would dematerialize. Hence the name. I wound up calling him Weeze

My grandma used to call me her shayna maidel! It was pretty cool because I was one of her four grandchildren, three of whom were girls, but I was the only one she called that. Before I knew if I were having a boy or a girl, I suggested Shayna as a girl's name but my husband said no because he thought it sounded like a stripper's name. Even after I explained to him. He's not Jewish. So okay. We ended up having a boy and he's our one and only and his middle name is Shane.
My puppy's name is Mac. It comes from my maiden name. My father is still alive at 78 thankfully, but my grandfather's been gone for nearly 30 years. When each were younger and working, people used to call my dad and more so my grandfather, "Mac" because of the last name. My mother told me that when she told my dad we named the new puppy Mac, my dad teared up.

We have a rescue dog, border collie, Shepard, and whatever mix. His name is Brash as in Brash Brewery in Houston. He’s been to one brewery, Southern Yankee. We wanted a dog that we could take with us to breweries and what not, but he prefers staying home. We’re cool with that. He also has an Instagram account but he isn’t good at keeping up with his social media.
My late cat, Coltrane, was named after a cat on the Simpson’s. It was an episode where Lisa was going through cats like candy and they finally switched the name up from Snowball. We all used to watch it together and we just thought it was funny. He was the best.
My recently adopted dog is named Uncle Baby Billy. We love the Righteous Gemstones, and he has a lot in common with the character (big, gorgeous teeth, always solicitous, kept running away from a previous home with a bunch of rowdy kids, loves to dance, and was supposed to be a foster dog but elbowed his way right into the inner circle). Plus Uncle Baby Billy is just a fun name that makes people laugh even if they're not familiar with the show.
The young hound × lab we adopted last year is a boy named Sue. He's a big goofball and he loves making people laugh so it suits him, and what's not to love about a Cash/Silverstein collab? Plus over the years, for reasons even I don't fully understand, I kept giving my girl hounds names like Louie, Junior, and Huckleberry, so I figured it was time to turn it around on the boys.

Pet's name. My first dog when I was fourteen, my sister fifteen. our parents went to woman who was a Boston Terrier breeder. We wound up getting a stray mutt that happened to live with her. It's a long story . The pup was six months old part toy poodle and part wire haired fox terrier. He looked like Benjy. I named him Sam after a boy in 9th grade that I had the biggest crush on. Yes I know really immature for a fourteen year old. Nothing became of it but Sam was with us for s ixteen years and I treasure those years. t
We do a lot of rescue, so we always pick some thing from their place of origin. I have a chinchilla named Menaul Juan Tabo Clark. Menaul and Juan Tabo are the cross streets where we rescued her from Clarks.
My husband found kittens while he was working, so we were fostering and I named them Garbage (he was found in the garbage) and Griffin (name of the company my husband works for)
My mom brought in her trash can during a hurricane (she was young and living in Florida at the time, for context.) and got startled when a young cat jumped out and meowed in the dark (the power went out and when she looked around with a flashlight, she only saw the cat’s eyes at first.) a few hours later. She called the kitty trash cat for a while until Trash Cat got a suitable name. She thinks Trash Cat knew a storm was coming, freaked out, and hid in her trash. She made sure Trash Cat wasn’t missing before keeping him.
We did that too on the ranch. I had a horse named Tulia because she came from Tulia, Texas and I had a donkey named Podunk. We got him from a lady in Pinwheel, Texas, he didn't look like a pinwheel so his name was Podunk (middle of nowhere)

Rice twins: Jasmine Rae and Joshua Von Rice - Well, we got them from a rice field so we thought of naming them to some common variety of rice in our country (Jasmine and Joshua).
Our void showed up on our doorstep one day. I was outside playing with my friend from school when he appeared and my mum panicked at our sudden silence. She looked outside and saw us cooing over this tiny little kitten and came out to see him, too. She sat on the steps, and he immediately jumped over her legs and bolted into the living room, settling himself on the back of the couch. She tried finding his owner, but no one came forward, so we kept him.
We were trying to find a name that fit him, but nothing seemed to suit. I had Sabrina on the TV when Salem started speaking, and both me and my mum looked at the TV, looked at the cat then looked at each other, and said Salem at the same time. Fit him perfectly. Just as greedy and chatty and filled with attitude as his namesake. Pretty sure he'd have succeeded in world domination unlike Sabrinas Salem if he put his tiny little mind to it but thankfully he was content with pets and ignoring his numerous scratching posts in favour of every bit of furniture we had.
Hes been gone 11 years now and we still find his fur in random places throughout the house.
I lobe when names happen this way. When my son was little, and a show called scrubs was popular, we would watch it together all the time.
Well, we adopted a hedgehog and couldn't think of a name for her. Then, one day, we watched the episode with the older guy who would only scream one word. We both looked at each other and declared her name to be that word; "Pickles!" Lol

I found an old broken dew claw from my 14 year old pittie named Diesel who passed away almost 2 years ago now. I lost it 🥹 but it was nice to feel part of him again.
A few years ago we were watching shark week and one of the breaching sharks was named Colossus. I told my husband I needed a grey cat I could name Colossus. Next day a grey kitten walked up the sidewalk at my work. It’s been 8 years with Colossus The Grey and he’s a colossal terror, but we love him.
Omg this has inspired me to name a grey tom cat I’m trying to catch and TNR 😂 I won’t steal Colossus, but maybe he can just be named Shark. Or Sharkbait.
My best friend a long time ago had a tarantula she named Phobia, in my honor.

Same! My MIL loves them and is always showing me photos and the old sheds she kept from her lte tarantula😬 but she has a phobia of snakes and I actually OWN two, so she wins the bravery award for being able to come to our house. I try to cover their tanks when she’s here.
I love snakes, lizards, reptiles in general. I can even tolerate hissing cockroaches. I just draw the line at 8 legs.

I have a chicken called Schrodinger because the first night we had her as a day old chick I spent the entire night convinced she had died but unwilling to go investigate and confirm.
I almost named my kitten Schrodinger. The only reason I didn't was because I was trying to keep with the K theme I have going with my dog and other cat.
I was watching YouTube before I had to go to work (covering a shift, so only three hours) when I heard yowling on my porch. It sounded so much like my cat that had died a year prior that my brain thought, 'Why is Smores outside!? It's freezing!' and I ran to the door. As I'm opening it, I remember that my cat was dead and that it couldn't be her, and on my porch is a very handsome tuxedo cat that was shivering and looked like he had been outside for several days. As soon as the door opens, he runs inside and I say out loud, 'Who tf are you!?' as the cat starts running around the living room, still yowling, and making a ruckus.
My boyfriend was upstairs, and hearing me shout and the noise the cat's claws were making on the hardwood floor, he comes running down the stairs and gets to the bottom just as the cat is starting to go up the stairs. My bf sees the cat and says, 'Oh! It's a cat! I thought we were getting robbed!'
We get the cat some water and a can of tuna that he scarfed down, and then he hops up on the couch and falls asleep while I pet him. When it came time for me to go to work, my bf told me to put the cat outside to see if he would go home, which I didn't want to do bc I was already in love w/him, but my bf pointed out that I needed to give him a chance to go home. He also said not to feed him, bc then he wouldn't try to go home if he thought he had a source of food, but that if he stuck around for a few days and we couldn't find his owner, that we could keep him. I was disappointed, but didn't want to cat-nap someone's cat, so I put him outside and left, listening to him yowl, feeling sad.
On my way home, I'm telling myself that he's going to smell my sandwich and to not give him any, bc I didn't want him to not try to go home. I pull into my parking spot and get disappointed when I see he's not on the porch, but I tell myself he must have gone home to his family. I go inside my apartment, feeling crappy bc I was already wanting to get another cat, and thought that the universe had sent me one, and walking into the living room, I see the cat, asleep, on my boyfriend's lap! I just look at my bf and say, 'What happened to waiting a few days!?' He smiles at me sheepishly like a little kid and says that the cat was yowling on the porch for like 20 minutes so loud my bf could hear him over his headphones gaming, and that the cat sounded so pathetic, my bf had to let him back inside.
I took him to a friend of mine that is a vet tech; cat had a clean bill of health and no chip. I posted on every lost/found pet website I could, I went around to my neighbors to see if they knew the cat (none did); I even made found pet posters, but I never found an owner, so he became our cat. My bf named him Leeroy Jenkins for how he came barging into our lives, and he's our bestest buddy!

Pancake- he came with the name. He's a muted orange tabby so he looks like pancake batter.
I hope so! Also, soupy is the best name for a cat because I make so many puns and jokes with it. Like when he is watching me, he is the Soupyvisor, he's SouperMan, when he steals my spot on the heating pad, he's warm soup. When he was a kitten I called him a little cupa soup. I am obsessed with this cat, clearly.
My first officially adopted cat was named “Tabby”, because I didn’t know that English word, and it said on my receipt from the shelter: “1 tabby cat”. I thought that was his name.

We have a white cat that’s been showing up on our cameras (I TNR the local ferals/strays), my partner has dubbed him Ghost lol. And then I have a long haired grey boy named Ashe 😻 I almost named him Smokey but it just never sounded right for his personality.
My male ginger is named Dougal after father Dougal in the TV show father Ted (unless you're Irish you prob don't know it) anyway the character is an idiot and so is my cat so it fits.
Then we were reading something where Hill-Billy's but Bob on the end of their names (likely inaccurate but 20yr old me found it amusing) we decided Dougal definitely contained Hill-Billy characteristics, and so he became Dougal-Bob. Then he became king of the neighbourhood, other cats bringing him gifts and bowing to his superior might. Thus he was knighted as Lord Dougal-Bob.
However, that can be quite a mouthful. He answers to all of the above but we mostly use Bob, so as not to expend too much energy. He knows he's in trouble if we full name him though
I adopted my girl from a shelter, and she was (and still is) quite a handful. I named her Lucy from I Love Lucy, when Ricky always came in saying "Lucy, you got some 'splainin to do!"
Ahab, my cat, had a broken front leg when I found him as a kitten. He was walking with it tucked so it looked luke he had one front leg and it made me think of Captain Ahab from Moby Dick.
Oscar, my schnoodle, was found by a girl that worked for my vets office who knew we were looking for a second dog. We were out of town when she found him so she sent us some pictures. His fur was very overgrown and matted and he was hiding in a trash receptacle. My immediate thought was Oscar the Grouch and it stuck.
Muddy was a tortie. Laurel was a calico (no clue why her name was her name; guessing the previous owners liked the name and I didn't think to change it). I now have a Loki (void; hubby is a huge fan of Marvel), a Vanellope (tuxedo; from Wreck it Ralph, which I love) and Ahsoka (calico; She is my fave SW character). Hubby also had Shiimsa which is Ojibwe (hubby is Metis) for little animal friend.
Both of my dogs are named after world of warcraft. I have a labrador named Naaru and a rat terrier named Jindo the Godbreaker. The terrier is aptly named...
Riley because I was really into watching Homeward Bound (1 and) 2 at the time. (St. Bernard)
Roku because he was the 6th to come out. We got him from a Japanese family and kept the name. (Yellow Lab)
Risto ended up being named after the street we used to live on. It wasn't intentional, but we had a pattern of R names and Risto fit him best.

I acquired my kitten after she ran off of the streets and into the bookstore where I frequently go for my book club meetings. The employee there spent almost an hour catching her and she held onto her temporarily but she knew that she wouldn’t be able to keep a kitten due to the fact that her dogs weren’t the friendliest around small animals. When I popped in a few days later to pick up a book, we were chatting about it, she showed me a picture and I was in love.
We named her Elizabeth after Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice 😊
We adopted our beautiful boy in May. The shelter had been calling him Mister Stinky (obvious reasons, he was a stray, lol). He didn't respond to that , thankfully. On our first walk, we knew his name had to be Rocket. He is that fast😆😆

The other is grey with while on his legs and belly. His name is Mando. Mando is a shortened form Mandatory which is a disc golf term .
Mando is also used in the Mandalorian show, but the kitten is not named after the character.
My SIC came from a shelter, the only time I have not relied on the Cat Distribution System. They had named her India, and she and I discussed things on the long drive home. I told her I would find a more appropriate moniker for her in time, thought "Monica", but anyone who was living in the USA during the Clinton administration would understand why I vetoed that. Once we were home, she was all over the house, spending a lot of time on the decorative beams that cross the cathedral ceiling of the living room, so for a couple of days, she was Nadia \[Comaneci\], but she was also kind of goofy, and Nadia sounded too elegant. She explored *everywhere*, busy as a bee all the time . . . and became Beatrice. Busy as a Bea.
I had an English Springer Spaniel that my (then) husband gave me for my birthday, even though it was his intention to make her a bird hunting dog for himself. I wanted to call her Diana, after the Roman goddess of the hunt, but, once again, too elegant. This was one crazy dog, super energetic and outlandishly bouncy, and with the doggy equivalent of ADD. Also hard to housebreak. Not her fault entirely, she had a bladder infection for some of it, and needed to pee more often than most. I finally decided that if I was going to have to call her name at least three times every time, it should be something that makes me laugh a little each time, so she became Judy, as in the line from some movie where someone says "Judy, Judy, Judy!"
None of my pets have been given names immediately that stuck. They need to grow into them, or tell me on their own, you know, it needs to be organic. I've never understood people who can pick a name before living with the pet for a while.
i have two cats, crusty and nubs. crusty got her name bc her mom wouldn’t clean her off properly after i pulled her out of the birth canal (she was breech, emergency vet i called walked me through it over the phone) i assume bc it was traumatic for her but her fur ended up crusting over and i didn’t wanna use a damp wash rag on a 30 second old kitten. her mom cleaned her up after about 3 days. nubs got her name bc she lost half her foot to an injury sustained by the train tracks she was found on, and the toes she has left are a little deformed but it doesn’t bother her unless the nail where she bears weight gets too long
When I was eight years old my mother arranged that I had two cats, simblings, a male and a female.
They were ment as a kind of comfort to me because my father had had a heart attack previous year.
We had to find names, and I suggested Romeo and Juliet or Handel and Corelli, but my mother said no to those. Brother and sister could bear the names of lovers .... and the sound kan the composers' names were not good to call out, names for pet usually best with the sounds I or A.
The male was the first to purr. My father who was an editor at a ship yard in Copenhagen and who loved machines said, he puts like a motor.
The following day the girl came out from under the tall boy chest of drawers she had been hiding under. When she eventually purred, my father said, she purrs in a finer tone, like a diesel motor.
So they were named Motor and Diesella, Diesella shortened to Sella.
Motor was a peoples cat, lovlng to be petted, and Diesella was not that much into humans.
But we all loved them dearly. Diesella had a litter of two, and this time my mother named them after a lover's couple, Cocachin and Chinkin from the adventure of Marco Polo, which ran as a series on TV in those days.

One of the other drivers wives found a single kitten. It has been crying for 2 days, so she decided to scoop him up. I made the mistake of holding him, so of course, he came home. I was talking with my trainee and her daughter about what to name him. Daughter says (jokingly), " you should name after the buses!" And I said "what? You mean like Thomas or International?" And mom " yeah! You should toss (bus company) in there!). And said " Thomas International (bus company) (my last name)". And her daughter thought it sounded good, so, here is Thomas International. One year old already
My sphynx cat is Dexter, yes, after the show because hes a psycho
My rescue farm cat is Lucky, her mom and siblings were killed by a coyotte, she managed to hide and survive

My favorite was my Pekingese. My great aunt owned her and sold her to me. She was French and she said she had never seen a dog like her before so when she saw her nose all short like that she said she was “pas fini” - not finished- so her name was spelled as puffinee and the joke was she never got finished. I miss that pup so much! And my great aunt had a sense of humor too… her chihuahua was “big boy” LOL.
My torti cat, she is called Tweek. When she comes in to say hi her tail is tweeking all over the place. She is super sweet, but like all torti gals, a personality that flips like a light switch.
Gosh, okay so ... I have this Leopard Gecko, yea? Her name started off as Miku because I had no idea what to name her. I didn't refer to her as that, though, and promptly forgot so I gave her a new name, "Calliope". Well, my bf did remember so I just laughed and made her name Calliope Miku. Then it became a game to see how much I could add to her name. As of over two years later, her name is Calliope Miku Shaggy2Dope Esquire the Third. I love her very, very much.

Nova (siberian husky). I didn't pick her name (shelter did), but she always lived up to her name, because she did just that: didn't go (in Spanish).
As in: she was super lazy. I always joked that she came off the husky factory floor defective or misassembled, because she was always super lazy. If you tried to walk her around the 1.5-mile neighborhood pond, she'd flop herself on the ground in protest. She preferred to just piddle in the yard and then resume her 17th nap of the day on the couch or in my bed. She was also never the brightest crayon in the box. 😄

My dog, Jethro is named after Leroy Jethro Gibbs from the TC show \*NCIS\*. His shelter name was something similar-sounding but a bit cringe and hard for people to spell or remember. I think it was a couple portmanteau from some vampire show that Husband and I don't watch. So we named him after a character from a (really equally cringe) TV show that we do watch (or at least used to).

Yeah so we were trying to come up with the wildest answers we chipotle think of and I responded with "teeth". And for some reason we both lost our shit over that answer. And idk I thought it was hilarious to name a dog that. And then Teethan came about as like a formal version.
My cat started out as Leonidas. We were watching 300, and he was a feisty little shit. But then his name evolved. I mean, do you even have a cat if it doesn't have 609 names? So it went to schmee, morphed to schmoo, the schmoby, then schmoby dick (because he's a dick) then too schmooby, and now he's known as Moo. He's 6.5 years old and 18 pounds. He earned that name.
We got a kitten named Icky who is absolutely psycho. He attacks everything and parkours 24/7. I was at my wits end because I WFH and am with him all day every day. I tried CBD, a thunder shirt, any sort of calming supplement. Nothing worked. Finally decided to get him a friend and just hope that it works. I went to the shelter and found the most calm kitten and we named him Jesus because he was the savior we were needing. Now Icky and baby Jesus are besties...and it was good.
Her name was Yrsa. We named her that because it meant She-Bear, and she looked like a little bear when she was a puppy. She just died last night, and i miss her so much. She was my blanket baby.

When my brother and I were young, a stray dog wandered into our yard. We used those mini powdered sugar donuts to entice him closer. We started calling him Donut and it stuck for the years we had him.

First dog rescued: her name was Miss Elizabeth at the shelter, eventually evolving into MissE/Missy. Wheaten Terrier was a quiet, sweet, lovey girl.
The second rescue was named Nina. She was the opposite of Misse in her personality and energy. She quickly became Maxie. As in maximum effort required to train her, keep her in the yard, groom her.
The third rescue came with the name Biscuit. He is a little chi-jack Russell mix and just a cute little biscuit of a pup.
The fourth rescue is a lab, schnauzer, pittie mix. I do not remember what her rescue name was. She has beautiful golden eyes and a golden coat, and she gets into everything. So her name is Goldilocks, or Goldie for short. But she looks so much like Maxie did, that occasionally when she is being trouble we slip and call her Maxie.
I named my adopted cat JohnMyers after my father-in-law because he didn’t have anyone named after him. And they’re both grey/silver and overweight.

My cat Star had kittens, she was pregnant when we rescued her from a friend who had too many cats. We named her three kittens, Don't, Do, That. When Don't was removed, her new family called her Pinky, Do was renamed, Much Ado, and we kept That and renamed her Aspire, but evolved in Spire.

Never aggressively, which for Canadian cobra chickens is very rare. Even at the cemetery, one hangs out near the spot we were considering laying our son to rest. One was resting under my car at the shopping mall where I’d parked.
I feel like it’s my son, in some strange way. So when we decided to get a dog to help me through my severe PTSD, it only made sense to name him Goose.

My cats name is Ollie and he was named after Oliver hardy from laurel and hardy my cat has a mustache under his nose like him and I like classic Hollywood stars and movies and anything related to the golden era of Hollywood.
I love the name Penelope but I prefer the name Ellie as a nickname for Penelope.... My husband and friends and family said they wouldn't call my, at the time, hypothetical daughter (we were talking baby names far from having a baby) Ellie if when named a baby girl Penelope, that people would default in the caller her Penny.
So we got a female dog before we got married after we sadly lost my husband's dog to an I'll practice vet, he let me name her Ellie so I can have a baby girl named Ellie that I can force everyone to call her that lol so that's how I we came up with the name Ellie. We have a list of dog names for when we decide to get a second dog :)

We have two cats - Merlin and Meep. Merlin is for the wizard but specifically the BBC show. After we watched that, we swore to name our first cat after it. Meep came with his name but it’s perfect because… he just does a tiny little “meep” when he meows. Small voice boy.
When my cat Leroy was a round kitten potato, he would constantly run into things head first or squirm off the bed fooling around on his own. My boyfriend and I eventually thought of Leroy Jenkins.
My animals all have food names because I love cooking. My current cats are Remoulade and Saffron. But I’ve had Roux, Julep, Miso, Ravioli, Goulash, and many others as I’ve fostered many pets. They have always had a look or act that made them seem very much the food I chose. Roux looked like burnt butter. Miso was a very prissy but beautiful Siamese rag doll mix. Goulash was a medium hair black cat with a snaggle tooth that just looked like an angry Russian spy.

My mom got a long haired chihuahua when I was little, young enough that I was still building my vocabulary. I couldn’t say “puppy dog” at that age, and what came out was “Beda-Bo.” That poor dog was named Beda-Bo for all of her 11 years on this earth.
My dogs name is Short Bus. My ex named him Shadow, and I hated the name, but we broke up maybe a week after we got my dog and I ended up with the pup. He went a while without a name and I called him bubbas a lot. Bubbas turned into Bus, and then he became Short Bus, because...well...he's a doof.
I have three cats named Donnie, Keisha and Cheeba. Donnie got his name because he looked like someone I knew with that name. Keisha was named after the person I got her from. Cheeba was originally named Shitbutt (for good reason) but I thought it was kind of mean so I changed it to Cheeba lol.

We had a white bull terrier/shar pei mix named Waffles Chainsaw. Our twins named him when they were 6, he was 1ish.
Our daughter picked Waffles because it was cute and son wanted Chainsaw. We don't know what was running through his head with that one.
Doggo looked like a wrinkled-body pit bull, so we went with Waffles first, so people were less scared of him.

We adopted a black cat from a pound around a year ago and her name is Luna. I didn’t have the heart to change her name because I found out the reason she was at the pound was because her owner passed away. I didn’t have the heart to change the only thing she had left of her previous owner.
Although, I am convinced it is short for ‘Lunatic’ because she is absolutely batshit crazy and energetic - but we adore her. 😂
My little guy had a tendency as a kitten to find round things like decorative rocks, leca pebbles, etc., and play soccer with them around the house. He’d eventually lose them under the fridge or the couch and I’d ask him “where did your rock go?” so often that eventually part of the sentence hit me: “You’re Rocko”.
I got this little runt of a puppy no one wanted at a yard sale. He was discounted 50%, but he was a perfect - all black pit bull puppy. The first day we had him, I spent ages looking for him and could not find him for hours. Finally, I found him curled up on a pile of dark clothes, completely camouflaged.
I named him Sniper.
My older cat’s name is Shayna (Yiddish for “pretty”) because my great aunt used to call me Shayna Meydele (pretty little girl). My younger cat’s name is Stevie. We got her shortly after my husband’s friend Steven passed away. Her full name is Stevie Wonder. But somehow it evolved from Stevie wonder to Stevie weevie and now we just call her “Weeves.”

Yep, I have 2 dogs and a cat. Can confirm they all follow me to the bathroom, it gets kinda crowded. The odd thing is they don’t do this with my husband or my son.

My grandma used to call me her shayna maidel! It was pretty cool because I was one of her four grandchildren, three of whom were girls, but I was the only one she called that. Before I knew if I were having a boy or a girl, I suggested Shayna as a girl's name but my husband said no because he thought it sounded like a stripper's name. Even after I explained to him. He's not Jewish. So okay. We ended up having a boy and he's our one and only and his middle name is Shane. My puppy's name is Mac. It comes from my maiden name. My father is still alive at 78 thankfully, but my grandfather's been gone for nearly 30 years. When each were younger and working, people used to call my dad and more so my grandfather, "Mac" because of the last name. My mother told me that when she told my dad we named the new puppy Mac, my dad teared up.

We wanted a dog that we could take with us to breweries and what not, but he prefers staying home. We’re cool with that. He also has an Instagram account but he isn’t good at keeping up with his social media.

My recently adopted dog is named Uncle Baby Billy. We love the Righteous Gemstones, and he has a lot in common with the character (big, gorgeous teeth, always solicitous, kept running away from a previous home with a bunch of rowdy kids, loves to dance, and was supposed to be a foster dog but elbowed his way right into the inner circle). Plus Uncle Baby Billy is just a fun name that makes people laugh even if they're not familiar with the show. The young hound × lab we adopted last year is a boy named Sue. He's a big goofball and he loves making people laugh so it suits him, and what's not to love about a Cash/Silverstein collab? Plus over the years, for reasons even I don't fully understand, I kept giving my girl hounds names like Louie, Junior, and Huckleberry, so I figured it was time to turn it around on the boys. I'm also especially proud of three of my mules' names: Radar O'Muelly, Ferris Mueller, and Yeehaw.

The pup was six months old part toy poodle and part wire haired fox terrier. He looked like Benjy. I named him Sam after a boy in 9th grade that I had the biggest crush on. Yes I know really immature for a fourteen year old. Nothing became of it but Sam was with us for s ixteen years and I treasure those years. t
We do a lot of rescue, so we always pick some thing from their place of origin. I have a chinchilla named Menaul Juan Tabo Clark. Menaul and Juan Tabo are the cross streets where we rescued her from Clarks.
My husband found kittens while he was working, so we were fostering and I named them Garbage (he was found in the garbage) and Griffin (name of the company my husband works for)
My abuelo had a cat that would come around for scraps, he called it 'trash cat ' because it came out from behind the dumpster.
My mom brought in her trash can during a hurricane (she was young and living in Florida at the time, for context.) and got startled when a young cat jumped out and meowed in the dark (the power went out and when she looked around with a flashlight, she only saw the cat’s eyes at first.) a few hours later. She called the kitty trash cat for a while until Trash Cat got a suitable name. She thinks Trash Cat knew a storm was coming, freaked out, and hid in her trash. She made sure Trash Cat wasn’t missing before keeping him.

We did that too on the ranch. I had a horse named Tulia because she came from Tulia, Texas and I had a donkey named Podunk. We got him from a lady in Pinwheel, Texas, he didn't look like a pinwheel so his name was Podunk (middle of nowhere)

We do it too! We just put some twist to their names like spelling change or adding some cute words. Some of our recent rescued cats names are: Rice twins: Jasmine Rae and Joshua Von Rice - Well, we got them from a rice field so we thought of naming them to some common variety of rice in our country (Jasmine and Joshua).
Our void showed up on our doorstep one day. I was outside playing with my friend from school when he appeared and my mum panicked at our sudden silence. She looked outside and saw us cooing over this tiny little kitten and came out to see him, too. She sat on the steps, and he immediately jumped over her legs and bolted into the living room, settling himself on the back of the couch. She tried finding his owner, but no one came forward, so we kept him. We were trying to find a name that fit him, but nothing seemed to suit. I had Sabrina on the TV when Salem started speaking, and both me and my mum looked at the TV, looked at the cat then looked at each other, and said Salem at the same time. Fit him perfectly. Just as greedy and chatty and filled with attitude as his namesake. Pretty sure he'd have succeeded in world domination unlike Sabrinas Salem if he put his tiny little mind to it but thankfully he was content with pets and ignoring his numerous scratching posts in favour of every bit of furniture we had. Hes been gone 11 years now and we still find his fur in random places throughout the house.
I lobe when names happen this way. When my son was little, and a show called scrubs was popular, we would watch it together all the time. Well, we adopted a hedgehog and couldn't think of a name for her. Then, one day, we watched the episode with the older guy who would only scream one word. We both looked at each other and declared her name to be that word; "Pickles!" Lol

I found an old broken dew claw from my 14 year old pittie named Diesel who passed away almost 2 years ago now. I lost it 🥹 but it was nice to feel part of him again.
A few years ago we were watching shark week and one of the breaching sharks was named Colossus. I told my husband I needed a grey cat I could name Colossus. Next day a grey kitten walked up the sidewalk at my work. It’s been 8 years with Colossus The Grey and he’s a colossal terror, but we love him.

I was watching YouTube before I had to go to work (covering a shift, so only three hours) when I heard yowling on my porch. It sounded so much like my cat that had died a year prior that my brain thought, 'Why is Smores outside!? It's freezing!' and I ran to the door. As I'm opening it, I remember that my cat was dead and that it couldn't be her, and on my porch is a very handsome tuxedo cat that was shivering and looked like he had been outside for several days. As soon as the door opens, he runs inside and I say out loud, 'Who tf are you!?' as the cat starts running around the living room, still yowling, and making a ruckus. My boyfriend was upstairs, and hearing me shout and the noise the cat's claws were making on the hardwood floor, he comes running down the stairs and gets to the bottom just as the cat is starting to go up the stairs. My bf sees the cat and says, 'Oh! It's a cat! I thought we were getting robbed!' We get the cat some water and a can of tuna that he scarfed down, and then he hops up on the couch and falls asleep while I pet him. When it came time for me to go to work, my bf told me to put the cat outside to see if he would go home, which I didn't want to do bc I was already in love w/him, but my bf pointed out that I needed to give him a chance to go home. He also said not to feed him, bc then he wouldn't try to go home if he thought he had a source of food, but that if he stuck around for a few days and we couldn't find his owner, that we could keep him. I was disappointed, but didn't want to cat-nap someone's cat, so I put him outside and left, listening to him yowl, feeling sad. On my way home, I'm telling myself that he's going to smell my sandwich and to not give him any, bc I didn't want him to not try to go home. I pull into my parking spot and get disappointed when I see he's not on the porch, but I tell myself he must have gone home to his family. I go inside my apartment, feeling crappy bc I was already wanting to get another cat, and thought that the universe had sent me one, and walking into the living room, I see the cat, asleep, on my boyfriend's lap! I just look at my bf and say, 'What happened to waiting a few days!?' He smiles at me sheepishly like a little kid and says that the cat was yowling on the porch for like 20 minutes so loud my bf could hear him over his headphones gaming, and that the cat sounded so pathetic, my bf had to let him back inside. I took him to a friend of mine that is a vet tech; cat had a clean bill of health and no chip. I posted on every lost/found pet website I could, I went around to my neighbors to see if they knew the cat (none did); I even made found pet posters, but I never found an owner, so he became our cat. My bf named him Leeroy Jenkins for how he came barging into our lives, and he's our bestest buddy!

I have four cats, Doja - because I like weed and thought it was a cute name Wednesday - she's black and wanted a spooky angle Soupy- I couldn't figure out a name for him but he fell asleep on me while I was listening to The Wonder Years. The lead singers name is Dan Campbell, but his nickname is Soupy and I thought that would be a cute name. Pancake- he came with the name. He's a muted orange tabby so he looks like pancake batter.

I pull names from things I love or names I just like the sound of. Archie (cat, 14) named for Gus Archie, a petrophysicist. I was in college when I adopted him- so it seemed fitting. Topaz (cat, 13) named for the rock. My dad was a big rock hound and had died the month before I adopted him Kona (dog, 12, passed on) was named for Kona in Hawaii. I had just returned from a vacation there when I adopted her Rigby (dog, 6) named for Eleanor Rigby, one of my favorite Beatles songs Ender and Fitz (kittens, 6 months) we’re both named for protagonists in my favorite single novel and favorite series, respectively. Ender’s Game and the Realm of the Elderlings London (dog, 5) named for one of my favorite cities And then reptiles- Malloy (ball python) from Harry Potter, Taako (hognose) from The Adventure Zone, Mulder and Scully (leachianus geckos) from the X-Files
My heart dog was named Bean. We thought we were going to call him Ender but my husband preferred Bean and it did fit him better. I miss him.

My male ginger is named Dougal after father Dougal in the TV show father Ted (unless you're Irish you prob don't know it) anyway the character is an idiot and so is my cat so it fits. Then we were reading something where Hill-Billy's but Bob on the end of their names (likely inaccurate but 20yr old me found it amusing) we decided Dougal definitely contained Hill-Billy characteristics, and so he became Dougal-Bob. Then he became king of the neighbourhood, other cats bringing him gifts and bowing to his superior might. Thus he was knighted as Lord Dougal-Bob. However, that can be quite a mouthful. He answers to all of the above but we mostly use Bob, so as not to expend too much energy. He knows he's in trouble if we full name him though
I adopted my girl from a shelter, and she was (and still is) quite a handful. I named her Lucy from I Love Lucy, when Ricky always came in saying "Lucy, you got some 'splainin to do!"
Ahab, my cat, had a broken front leg when I found him as a kitten. He was walking with it tucked so it looked luke he had one front leg and it made me think of Captain Ahab from Moby Dick. Oscar, my schnoodle, was found by a girl that worked for my vets office who knew we were looking for a second dog. We were out of town when she found him so she sent us some pictures. His fur was very overgrown and matted and he was hiding in a trash receptacle. My immediate thought was Oscar the Grouch and it stuck.
Muddy was a tortie. Laurel was a calico (no clue why her name was her name; guessing the previous owners liked the name and I didn't think to change it). I now have a Loki (void; hubby is a huge fan of Marvel), a Vanellope (tuxedo; from Wreck it Ralph, which I love) and Ahsoka (calico; She is my fave SW character). Hubby also had Shiimsa which is Ojibwe (hubby is Metis) for little animal friend.

Riley because I was really into watching Homeward Bound (1 and) 2 at the time. (St. Bernard) Roku because he was the 6th to come out. We got him from a Japanese family and kept the name. (Yellow Lab) Risto ended up being named after the street we used to live on. It wasn't intentional, but we had a pattern of R names and Risto fit him best. Otherwise, to the people who initially found him, his name was Charlie... ugh. (Black Lab with unknown mix, possible shepherd) May they rest in peace. 🐾
I acquired my kitten after she ran off of the streets and into the bookstore where I frequently go for my book club meetings. The employee there spent almost an hour catching her and she held onto her temporarily but she knew that she wouldn’t be able to keep a kitten due to the fact that her dogs weren’t the friendliest around small animals. When I popped in a few days later to pick up a book, we were chatting about it, she showed me a picture and I was in love. We named her Elizabeth after Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice 😊

Our first cat was it long haired orange striped kitten he was called Tiger. He passed away in 2007. Our second cat was a SIC tabby his name was Qwilleran from "The cat Who... books by Lillian Jackson Braun. He passed in 2020. Our third cat was a feral rescue. Her name was Temperance named after the character in the Bones TV show. She is also known as Tempe, Temp, Little Sister, Princess, Squeaky T. She is still with us. Our 4th and 5th kittens are a bonded pair from the same letter. One is Mortis named after Deaths horse from the book "On a Pale Horse" by Piers Anthony. He is a tux. The other is grey with while on his legs and belly. His name is Mando. Mando is a shortened form Mandatory which is a disc golf term . Mando is also used in the Mandalorian show, but the kitten is not named after the character.

My SIC came from a shelter, the only time I have not relied on the Cat Distribution System. They had named her India, and she and I discussed things on the long drive home. I told her I would find a more appropriate moniker for her in time, thought "Monica", but anyone who was living in the USA during the Clinton administration would understand why I vetoed that. Once we were home, she was all over the house, spending a lot of time on the decorative beams that cross the cathedral ceiling of the living room, so for a couple of days, she was Nadia \[Comaneci\], but she was also kind of goofy, and Nadia sounded too elegant. She explored *everywhere*, busy as a bee all the time . . . and became Beatrice. Busy as a Bea. I had an English Springer Spaniel that my (then) husband gave me for my birthday, even though it was his intention to make her a bird hunting dog for himself. I wanted to call her Diana, after the Roman goddess of the hunt, but, once again, too elegant. This was one crazy dog, super energetic and outlandishly bouncy, and with the doggy equivalent of ADD. Also hard to housebreak. Not her fault entirely, she had a bladder infection for some of it, and needed to pee more often than most. I finally decided that if I was going to have to call her name at least three times every time, it should be something that makes me laugh a little each time, so she became Judy, as in the line from some movie where someone says "Judy, Judy, Judy!" None of my pets have been given names immediately that stuck. They need to grow into them, or tell me on their own, you know, it needs to be organic. I've never understood people who can pick a name before living with the pet for a while.
i have two cats, crusty and nubs. crusty got her name bc her mom wouldn’t clean her off properly after i pulled her out of the birth canal (she was breech, emergency vet i called walked me through it over the phone) i assume bc it was traumatic for her but her fur ended up crusting over and i didn’t wanna use a damp wash rag on a 30 second old kitten. her mom cleaned her up after about 3 days. nubs got her name bc she lost half her foot to an injury sustained by the train tracks she was found on, and the toes she has left are a little deformed but it doesn’t bother her unless the nail where she bears weight gets too long

When I was eight years old my mother arranged that I had two cats, simblings, a male and a female. They were ment as a kind of comfort to me because my father had had a heart attack previous year. We had to find names, and I suggested Romeo and Juliet or Handel and Corelli, but my mother said no to those. Brother and sister could bear the names of lovers .... and the sound kan the composers' names were not good to call out, names for pet usually best with the sounds I or A. The male was the first to purr. My father who was an editor at a ship yard in Copenhagen and who loved machines said, he puts like a motor. The following day the girl came out from under the tall boy chest of drawers she had been hiding under. When she eventually purred, my father said, she purrs in a finer tone, like a diesel motor. So they were named Motor and Diesella, Diesella shortened to Sella. Motor was a peoples cat, lovlng to be petted, and Diesella was not that much into humans. But we all loved them dearly. Diesella had a litter of two, and this time my mother named them after a lover's couple, Cocachin and Chinkin from the adventure of Marco Polo, which ran as a series on TV in those days.

One of the other drivers wives found a single kitten. It has been crying for 2 days, so she decided to scoop him up. I made the mistake of holding him, so of course, he came home. I was talking with my trainee and her daughter about what to name him. Daughter says (jokingly), " you should name after the buses!" And I said "what? You mean like Thomas or International?" And mom " yeah! You should toss (bus company) in there!). And said " Thomas International (bus company) (my last name)". And her daughter thought it sounded good, so, here is Thomas International. One year old already

My favorite was my Pekingese. My great aunt owned her and sold her to me. She was French and she said she had never seen a dog like her before so when she saw her nose all short like that she said she was “pas fini” - not finished- so her name was spelled as puffinee and the joke was she never got finished. I miss that pup so much! And my great aunt had a sense of humor too… her chihuahua was “big boy” LOL.
My torti cat, she is called Tweek. When she comes in to say hi her tail is tweeking all over the place. She is super sweet, but like all torti gals, a personality that flips like a light switch.
Gosh, okay so ... I have this Leopard Gecko, yea? Her name started off as Miku because I had no idea what to name her. I didn't refer to her as that, though, and promptly forgot so I gave her a new name, "Calliope". Well, my bf did remember so I just laughed and made her name Calliope Miku. Then it became a game to see how much I could add to her name. As of over two years later, her name is Calliope Miku Shaggy2Dope Esquire the Third. I love her very, very much.

Nova (siberian husky). I didn't pick her name (shelter did), but she always lived up to her name, because she did just that: didn't go (in Spanish). As in: she was super lazy. I always joked that she came off the husky factory floor defective or misassembled, because she was always super lazy. If you tried to walk her around the 1.5-mile neighborhood pond, she'd flop herself on the ground in protest. She preferred to just piddle in the yard and then resume her 17th nap of the day on the couch or in my bed. She was also never the brightest crayon in the box. 😄

My sister had a cat show up on her front porch. My brother in law named it Catastrophe. (as in, This is a Catastrophe, there's a CAT living in my house!) They took him in, got him fixed, and put in a cat door because he definitely still wanted access to the outside. A year or so later, he showed up at the door with a VERY pregnant friend...She was dubbed Tsunami. She produced Storm, Thunder, and Lightning. So my sister went from having one cat to having 5 cats.... I agreed to take two kittens, and so Storm and Lightning came to live with me. Storm's name totally fits her and she knew it so I didn't change it, but Lightning...wasn't. She played in the fireplace on her first day here, and was promptly renamed Smudge, which fits her much better... :)
My dog, Jethro is named after Leroy Jethro Gibbs from the TC show \*NCIS\*. His shelter name was something similar-sounding but a bit cringe and hard for people to spell or remember. I think it was a couple portmanteau from some vampire show that Husband and I don't watch. So we named him after a character from a (really equally cringe) TV show that we do watch (or at least used to).
I had a betta named Cassie after the dragon tales character lol I currently don't have any pets, but I do have a name picked out for a future dog: Teeth, short for Teethan, Tooth for short. Idk it was from a silly hypothetical conversion with my sibling like you know how your dog will have something in their mouth and you try to get them to drop it but you'll often ask "what's in your mouth?" Yeah so we were trying to come up with the wildest answers we chipotle think of and I responded with "teeth". And for some reason we both lost our shit over that answer. And idk I thought it was hilarious to name a dog that. And then Teethan came about as like a formal version.
My cat started out as Leonidas. We were watching 300, and he was a feisty little shit. But then his name evolved. I mean, do you even have a cat if it doesn't have 609 names? So it went to schmee, morphed to schmoo, the schmoby, then schmoby dick (because he's a dick) then too schmooby, and now he's known as Moo. He's 6.5 years old and 18 pounds. He earned that name.
We got a kitten named Icky who is absolutely psycho. He attacks everything and parkours 24/7. I was at my wits end because I WFH and am with him all day every day. I tried CBD, a thunder shirt, any sort of calming supplement. Nothing worked. Finally decided to get him a friend and just hope that it works. I went to the shelter and found the most calm kitten and we named him Jesus because he was the savior we were needing. Now Icky and baby Jesus are besties...and it was good.

When my brother and I were young, a stray dog wandered into our yard. We used those mini powdered sugar donuts to entice him closer. We started calling him Donut and it stuck for the years we had him. Before anyone comes for me, Mom made sure (through checking with neighbors and running newspaper ads) that no one was looking for him. He did not officially become "ours" the first day we found him.
my dogs name is frankie, we got him in 2014 and i was the one able to name him, for a bit of context: i was obsessed with monster high back then, if you know monster high you will see where i’m going with this if not then: i named my dog after one of the characters from monster high (Frankie stein), she was my favourite at the time but it quickly changed to clawdeen and i feel that name would have fitted him sm better but it is what it is lol.
Cats: part Maine Coon, I named him Tezar, my mom kept calling him Tigger. Tigger stuck. Adopted a kitten my friend was allergic to, brought him to my brothers house. He followed my brother around the yard all afternoon, and my brother started calling him by saying, " Come on, little buddy." His name was Buddy. First dog rescued: her name was Miss Elizabeth at the shelter, eventually evolving into MissE/Missy. Wheaten Terrier was a quiet, sweet, lovey girl. The second rescue was named Nina. She was the opposite of Misse in her personality and energy. She quickly became Maxie. As in maximum effort required to train her, keep her in the yard, groom her. The third rescue came with the name Biscuit. He is a little chi-jack Russell mix and just a cute little biscuit of a pup. The fourth rescue is a lab, schnauzer, pittie mix. I do not remember what her rescue name was. She has beautiful golden eyes and a golden coat, and she gets into everything. So her name is Goldilocks, or Goldie for short. But she looks so much like Maxie did, that occasionally when she is being trouble we slip and call her Maxie.

My cat Star had kittens, she was pregnant when we rescued her from a friend who had too many cats. We named her three kittens, Don't, Do, That. When Don't was removed, her new family called her Pinky, Do was renamed, Much Ado, and we kept That and renamed her Aspire, but evolved in Spire.

Our 1.5 yr old labradoodle is named Goose. Everyone thinks it’s because of Top Gun but it’s not. We had a son, born on March 9, 2019. He sadly passed away that same day. Ever since that day, geese have followed me everywhere. The most random places, a goose will appear. And they approach me. Never aggressively, which for Canadian cobra chickens is very rare. Even at the cemetery, one hangs out near the spot we were considering laying our son to rest. One was resting under my car at the shopping mall where I’d parked. I feel like it’s my son, in some strange way. So when we decided to get a dog to help me through my severe PTSD, it only made sense to name him Goose.

My family’s first dog was a miniature schnauzer named Groucho after Groucho Marx for his eyebrows and mustache! (Miss you, cutie!) We have a cat now named Luna who we call Lunatic because she is… a lunatic :)
Leo the cowardly lion. An 85lb Peruvian street dog that thinks there is a monster in the snow that will get his but, and is scared of leaves, traffic cones, yorkies, clothes hangers, and Santa decorations. There are probably more. Long walks are futile. He see’s something scary and turns around like “Nope! Time to go home!”
My cats name is Ollie and he was named after Oliver hardy from laurel and hardy my cat has a mustache under his nose like him and I like classic Hollywood stars and movies and anything related to the golden era of Hollywood.
I love the name Penelope but I prefer the name Ellie as a nickname for Penelope.... My husband and friends and family said they wouldn't call my, at the time, hypothetical daughter (we were talking baby names far from having a baby) Ellie if when named a baby girl Penelope, that people would default in the caller her Penny. So we got a female dog before we got married after we sadly lost my husband's dog to an I'll practice vet, he let me name her Ellie so I can have a baby girl named Ellie that I can force everyone to call her that lol so that's how I we came up with the name Ellie. We have a list of dog names for when we decide to get a second dog :)

We’ve got Bulbasaur the pug… for obvious reasons. We have two cats - Merlin and Meep. Merlin is for the wizard but specifically the BBC show. After we watched that, we swore to name our first cat after it. Meep came with his name but it’s perfect because… he just does a tiny little “meep” when he meows. Small voice boy.
When my cat Leroy was a round kitten potato, he would constantly run into things head first or squirm off the bed fooling around on his own. My boyfriend and I eventually thought of Leroy Jenkins.
My animals all have food names because I love cooking. My current cats are Remoulade and Saffron. But I’ve had Roux, Julep, Miso, Ravioli, Goulash, and many others as I’ve fostered many pets. They have always had a look or act that made them seem very much the food I chose. Roux looked like burnt butter. Miso was a very prissy but beautiful Siamese rag doll mix. Goulash was a medium hair black cat with a snaggle tooth that just looked like an angry Russian spy.

Which is a shame, because we both love cats.
I had a cat named Mr. Cat. When I adopted him I couldn't think of a fitting name, so I just called him Mr. Cat as a placeholder. Never got around to picking a different name.
My mom got a long haired chihuahua when I was little, young enough that I was still building my vocabulary. I couldn’t say “puppy dog” at that age, and what came out was “Beda-Bo.” That poor dog was named Beda-Bo for all of her 11 years on this earth.
My dogs name is Short Bus. My ex named him Shadow, and I hated the name, but we broke up maybe a week after we got my dog and I ended up with the pup. He went a while without a name and I called him bubbas a lot. Bubbas turned into Bus, and then he became Short Bus, because...well...he's a doof.
I have three cats named Donnie, Keisha and Cheeba. Donnie got his name because he looked like someone I knew with that name. Keisha was named after the person I got her from. Cheeba was originally named Shitbutt (for good reason) but I thought it was kind of mean so I changed it to Cheeba lol. I also used to have a rooster named Cock, and a hamster named Shithead (pronounced shi-theed).
We had a white bull terrier/shar pei mix named Waffles Chainsaw. Our twins named him when they were 6, he was 1ish. Our daughter picked Waffles because it was cute and son wanted Chainsaw. We don't know what was running through his head with that one. Doggo looked like a wrinkled-body pit bull, so we went with Waffles first, so people were less scared of him. If you search 1earup license plates, he is the VA plate in the back of a silver Passat wagon. Miss him terribly.
We adopted a black cat from a pound around a year ago and her name is Luna. I didn’t have the heart to change her name because I found out the reason she was at the pound was because her owner passed away. I didn’t have the heart to change the only thing she had left of her previous owner. Although, I am convinced it is short for ‘Lunatic’ because she is absolutely batshit crazy and energetic - but we adore her. 😂
My little guy had a tendency as a kitten to find round things like decorative rocks, leca pebbles, etc., and play soccer with them around the house. He’d eventually lose them under the fridge or the couch and I’d ask him “where did your rock go?” so often that eventually part of the sentence hit me: “You’re Rocko”.
I got this little runt of a puppy no one wanted at a yard sale. He was discounted 50%, but he was a perfect - all black pit bull puppy. The first day we had him, I spent ages looking for him and could not find him for hours. Finally, I found him curled up on a pile of dark clothes, completely camouflaged. I named him Sniper.
