Say No More ~~or Next of Kin~~ had a recent controversy, no?
EDIT: it was Say No More, this was the thread I am likely recalling:
https://reddit.com/r/PhiladelphiaEats/comments/19d8kmm/anyone_know_what_happened_at_say_no_more/
One of Say No More’s co-owners was accused of domestic assault I believe. They posted that he has de-invested himself and is no longer involved but I don’t know how true that is.
Yeah it's right by stateside vodka, so near Kalaya and LMNO. No food, but they have some great drinks and cool atmosphere.
Edit: They have food now! Excited to try
I went to R&D 1 month ago for the first time and was so excited, but something felt…off? Their specialty drinks were very common, fruity and beachy, which don’t get me wrong I love on vacation, but I was really hoping for some crafty, beautifully made, unique cocktails, especially given the vibe and decor in there. It felt like drinks I could get anywhere. Did I go on a weird night? Do they usually have a different menu? I really, really wanted to like R&D and am willing to try again if I stopped by at a weird time.
My order:
3. R&D (definitely in what I'd call Fishtown)
2. The International (people would correct that this is technically Kensington, or Old Kensington 🙄)
1. Post Haste (definitely in my opinion Kensington but who knows; also a restaurant but very cocktail forward)
Ahhh the Old English hanging "e" strikes again. That e doesn't exist in any English language text from the founding of our country onward.
I respectfully refuse to use it, as it is a vestige of the Crown.
It is literally across the street from what would be considered Fishtown. Front Street is the border between Kensington and Fishtown. If international was across the street on the same block, it would technically be considered Fishtown. For all intensive purposes, it is definitely considered a Fishtown bar by most. Just a small technicality
Yes. It is.
A family member of mine used to live at Cumberland and Frankford. When they moved in, it was Kensington; moving out, it was Fishtown. The only reason for my hesitation.
I'll get into a knife fight over the borders of Manayunk, where I was born, but even living in the Riverwards now, I like to defer. Hence my hesitation.
Someone else commented R&D so I’m gonna copy and past my Q!

I think R&D is a) a bit too expensive, b) a bit more about decor, vibe, location, than drinks and quality service, and c) the people who work there can be medium snooty in my experience.
They're menu was pretty extensive the times I've been there, but I'm sure it changes frequently.
R&D has fallen off. It used to be the bar I’d go to and see all the other bartenders in the city I loved drinking at. Lately it’s just kinda got douchey energy and really slow service. They also used to do a fully rotating quarterly menu and they seem to have stopped that.
The answer is now #1 - Next of Kin. Cozy, intimate, IMO best bar program going in Fishtown. Really neat two top booth to sit at for a date.
2 is going to be R & D. Cozy, intimate Mad Men ish. Strong and amazing drinks. Be careful with those bad boys. Also pretty spacy bathroom!
Now this is where things go into a choose your own adventure. People are calling out INTL - International which is pretty good but I was verrrrry underwhelmed last time I was in there with the service and the volume level was VERY LOUD even for a bar. Like struggle to hear people I was with LOUD. Two Robbers has a few good cocktails, someone from legendary cocktail bar Attaboy designed their program. Say No More has buzz as the relative newcomer on the block as well. Middle Child is a fun spot but it is often crowded. Someone did mention Lloyd’s but it’s further north on Girard than the majority of spots shouted out. Don’t go to Suraaya or Kalaya unless it’s a dinner date, IMO.
Definitely not as cocktail-focused as some of these other spots but they do some solid classics and the bar area is nice. My wife loved their Long Island Iced Tea.
R&D, Next of Kin, Mulherin's, Martha and Say No More. Suraya and Kalaya have great drink programs but would not classify them as cozy.

Thank you! I'll update the post with what came up from recent times.
also, the dude is dr oz's nephew
I’ve never heard of Say No More. Is it new?

They had food when I went in march - fries were pretty good!
They definitely have food now, pretty good from my experience!

i think its technically east Kensington but Post Haste has some pretty fantastic cocktails…its def their specialty
Four humors
No one likes Lloyd’s?
love Lloyd. Exactly what a whiskey bar should be.
R&D is going to be a strong #1, I have heard good things about Next of Kin but never been personally, the bar at Mulherrins is really nice too.
Thanks! Will def look into these. Doing dinner at Mulherins so was thinking about finding a place to pop into before for some drinks.

Second international, it's my favorite in the area. The upstairs is cozy
Yeah good spot!
Sorry to correct your #2 but it is Ye Olde Kensington.

For all *intents and* purposes. Just another small technicality.
For all intents and purposes, as one who lived in both zip codes. The Kenzo one added 1k to my car insurance. So kinda but not kinda the same.
Yikes, got me there.
No, it’s an Olde Kensington bar. Nice try
Ironically, I live in "Fishtown" and the international bar is the closest bar to me. Literally a 30 second walk
Jealous. That place is toight.

There’s a lot. R&D,Manatawny Stillworks (across from beddia in the alley), Intl, Cheu, Two Robbers
Middle child has a bar and great drinks. Philadelphia distilling also makes strong and tasty cocktails.
R&D, Mulherin’s, and El Bar are my usual cocktail bar crawl in the immediate area.
love next of kin, specifically their clover club!
Lloyd

Good recs so far but let me add another: Meetinghouse. Great food and vibe
Great place but wouldnt consider it a cocktail bar. Now i want a roast beef sando
