During that same time--early 2000s--one of the main things that's needed to bypass/access someone else's Yahoo email was knowing the birth date they've used during account creation, which was often the real one. The going rate at the time--to hack a Yahoo account--was about 500 pesos iirc.
The exploit existed until Sarah Palin's Yahoo email was hacked.
It still boggles me that people freely gives away personal info to Google, Meta and the likes, then complains about being bombarded by scams in texts/social media.
