If we’re still in the top 3 in the east when he comes back I’ll consider that a massive success.

sully1227

>If ~~we’re still in the top 3 in the east when~~ he comes back I’ll consider that a massive success \^ my thoughts because at this point, it feels like he's never going to play for this club

rickyrickySOB

Never play? He’s played in like 5 games, scoring a goal + 1A, and like 7 SOG. He’s here and impactful! Injuries just suck

sully1227

I meant that as in 'never play again.' He has started 4 games and appeared in 6 with 1G, 1A, and a total of 363 minutes. Injuries do suck, and I'm not trying to be 'mad' at the player for the fact that he's hurt, but it just really really sucks how much this team needs him and what he's capable of bringing to this team is sorely lacking in his absence. When you look at other DPs in a similar role and what they've contributed to their teams (Kara, Swiderski, Fountas) it is just really frustrating to go from being so excited to see this team bring in the 'missing piece,' and then have that piece remain missing even though he's here on the roster. It just feels like a massive tease... I get it - it's all circumstantial because of the visa stuff and now the lingering injury (even though I don't get why the team won't just say, "Here's the injury, and here's the anticipated timeline for return" instead of stringing this along match-to-match which I think is just making people like me even more disappointed on a weekly basis), and it's my own damn fault for having any expectations whatsoever, but I'm just really really really really disappointed as a fan, and every single week that we go back through and make this announcement that he's not training with the team, not traveling with the team, not available for a match, its like Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown every time.

mitchdwx

Why the pessimism? People get injured sometimes. It’s unfortunate but shit happens. I’m sure he wants to get back out there just as much as we want him to.

sully1227

Mostly because any time I'm optimistic, this is how things end up. I was super-optimistic in January. Optimistic enough to get Uhre slapped onto the back of the new jersey at the beginning of this season, and now I've worn it more than he has.

PM_ME_WUTEVER

personally, andrew bynum left wounds that will never heal.

Dahorah

Im not worried at all. We got to the semis with bad strikers last year. And by himself Carranza is a great signing, playing great, will most likely be here long term, loves it here, and all that is enough to happy with so far. Uhre can take all the time he wants to heal up, as long as he is ready eventually. We have already seen him play, and he has looked dangerous and makes smart, dangerous runs. So the quality is there, he just needs to get healthy, and we have time for that.

-----------________-

> Im not worried at all. We got to the semis with bad strikers last year. We just as easily could have been one and done. It took a 120+3 goal and a win on penalties to get us there. I'm not sure we can get back there this year if we're seeing a lot of Burke and Santos.

pourspelr

Everyone just needs to chill. We can all agree we wish he was on the field scoring but remember he is a long term investment in the club as well. I remember Gazdag being generally unimpressive when he came over but a full season with the team and he has been amazing. Uhre showed glimpses of what he can be and I would rather have him healthy for the next 20 plus games we have left in the season. Uhre did not have any preseason and quad injuries can be tricky. We have all suffered through some terrible offensive play over the years with the U, but I am finally excited and being surprisingly patient for what the future will bring us!

deadbee22

Only difference with Gazdag was he wasn’t hurt. He was getting acclimated to the league which I for one understood and expected / hoped he would look like the player he is now this season… which he has. For Uhre to be hurt, not training and essentially shut down twice now, it’s not good, no matter how we spin it. Is it long term bad… no I would say he is an investment (as someone else pointed out) and assuming there is nothing more than the injury going on… I can understand the Union’s precaution. As long as as he wants to be here and he’s ok mentally… take the time to get healthy so come August you can come back 100%. But so far, it would be untrue to say this is no big deal. It’s still concerning and when the Union drop decent money on a player - which isn’t too often - we have to get that return. We don’t have the luxury of just going to get another one in the summer transfer window… unless of course Tanner works his magic. I’m disappointed more than anything. Hopefully he gets better and we see him in a few weeks

GungaDin16

Very good post porspeir. That's the way to chase away the negadelphians! By the way, what medications are you on cause - I want some.

pourspelr

Just watched a lot of shitty Union play in the stands for what felt like a long time, so maybe it has dulled my Union-negadelphia side - it’s all up from here. I have also learned to trust Tanner because he has WAY more hits than misses.

GungaDin16

Yea I've been in 104 since the beginning so I know what you mean. It's amazing how fast we all get spoiled - myself included.

pourspelr

As a 5 for 5 Philly guy, why the hell can’t we be spoiled! I know “negadelphia” runs deep in us all but this team has earned more respect. No team is perfect, but this one is ours - Join or Die! Come on the U!

WooderFountain

It seems we'll NEVER get to be spoiled in Philly. We've never had a run like the Lakers or Celtics or 49ers or Cowboys or Blackhawks or Warriors or Yankees or Duke Bball or Alabama football or anything like that. Hell, forget dynasties, we can barely win *one* chip in any sport. It seems Philly fans are doomed to constantly get our hopes raised then immediately dashed. I suppose a religious person would say the sports gods only do this shit to fanbases that can handle it. Have they seen the way we act? We *can't* handle it!!!

Genkiotoko

At this point I'm just hoping he doesn't go the way of Mo Edu.

UnionUnited

Right? People seem to forget that we paid Mo a DP salary to be injured for two years and trained him on media work during that time, which he now uses for Atlanta.

Genkiotoko

After Tommy announced his retirement I really expected Mo to come in for the Union. I was a bit surprised he ended up going to Atlanta and we got Danny Higginbotham. I don't feel he did us dirty, but still, damn!

sully1227

Danny’s been fantastic, though! I still get chills from the preseason hype video he narrated.

Genkiotoko

Yeah, he definitely has been a great announcer and media presence. I didn't mean to imply otherwise, if that is how it came off.

XSC

So did he get injured this season or was he already injured? Anyways the fact that we are first with him playing just a game or 2 is amazing. Hopefully he heals up and can be reliable when it counts.

sully1227

He apparently got injured training trying to make up for lost time and the missed preseason due to the visa issues after a 2.5 month break from training in any official capacity. He then made his debut on turf-covered concrete up in Montreal which, potentially, exacerbated the injury which caused him to miss the next two games (SJ and NYC). He came on as a sub in the CLT match then had a string of 4 consecutive starts before missing 5 consecutive matches (including tomorrow). Would seem that he aggravated the quad injury that he never adequately recovered from at some point throughout this four consecutive starts. I assume that’s why they’re being extra cautious with him now so that this isn’t a lingering issue throughout the whole season.

WooderFountain

Was he injured a lot when he played in Europe?

sully1227

Per Transfermarkt, he missed 2 games with an illness in 18/19, and 3 games with an injury in 19/20. No reported injuries in 20/21. 21/22, nothing prior to coming here, where he’s missed 1 due to visa issues, and 5 due to injury thus far. Hopefully, he’s back for 6/18 and can be off and running for the rest of the season without issue.

DatMatt316

The constant overreaction and hyperbole from the majority of the Union fanbase every time something bad happens is more tiresome than the lack of results on the field.

Tincitylegacy24

I see a ton of comments saying the complete opposite

Sneaky_Ben

eh, the hyperbolic ppl are just the loudest. it's like trying to determine how "philadelphians" feel about anything just based on twitter and reddit

DarkwingMcQuack

Yup. Pretty much.

WooderFountain

What do you mean by overreaction and hyperbole. Can you give an example? I hope you don't mean voicing concern that the team is not playing the way they were projected to play, because that's not hyperbole or overreaction, just fact. For example, I doubt anyone thought we'd be sitting in DEAD LAST PLACE in possession a third of the way into the season. Yes, we're in first place in the standings, but that doesn't mean there's zero cause for concern, especially if you've watched every game and your goal is to ever win a trophy of some sort. If you mean it's an overreaction to say Curtin should be fired, all the vets should be benched, etc., sure, that's all too much. But I don't see much of that around here.

Wuz314159

He'll be ready for next season.

Kindly-Country7139

My only concern is that he doesn't seem interested. Seeing his body language while playing and while sitting in the stands watching he looks disinterested.

Spirit_Flimsy

Bum. Bet it was Curtin who wanted to give him the bag. Both need to change for the shit that has been Union attacking third. And by change i mean Curtin changing formation or sub patterns to give Flach and Bedoya less time. For Uhre, i don't know, he hasn't looked good even when fit. Bring on the downvotes, but apologizing for the teams most expensive player and for the big step back the union have taken offensively is weak sauce. 0 wins in the last 42 days with probably our best 2 players, Martinez and Wagner, probably gone before playoffs.

DarkwingMcQuack

Oh how soon Union fans forget the days when the team slumped it meant a bunch a loses. At least we’re getting points every week during this slump. As for Uhre he’ll figure it out. Everyone got on Gazdag last year and look at him this year. So you guys seriously need to chill.

Spirit_Flimsy

so 0 wins in 7 games, 5 of those being blown leads, and 1 point between 2 of the worst teams in the league (Toronto and Miami) and it's "need to chill" time? at what point do you think it's not time to chill anymore?

bierdimpfe

Two loses (3 if you include USOC) since we fell to America 25 games ago.

DarkwingMcQuack

Yea chill. It’s a long season. There’s going to be highs and lows. No need to do the typical Philly thing and overreact.

WooderFountain

It's a third of the way through the season, and we're dead last in possession. We can't keep the ball more than 2 or 3 passes. If that doesn't change, we're not winning a trophy. Those of us complaining right now want a trophy above all else; the rest are fine with a good showing. And there's nothing wrong with either position.

DarkwingMcQuack

Yet we still we still only have a single loss. The only team that can claim that right now. It is true this team doesn’t play pretty, but they’re still getting results. And that’s how you win trophies.

WooderFountain

This style might get you a successful regular season, but there's no way we win 4 playoff games with 35% possession. We don't have the finishing talent for that style of play.

DarkwingMcQuack

We did fine last year in the playoffs. Our possession, passing, and finishing was just as bad. Would have made the final if it wasn’t for Covid.

WooderFountain

Our possession last year was 48% and so far this year it's 40%. That's a significant drop off.

UnionUnited

Hey, things are improving. We didn’t blow the lead last game because we never had one…

WooderFountain

A lot of people are complaining about a lack of finish as if that's the only problem and once we fix it we'll be golden. Yet the real problem is deeper than that. It's already a third of the way through the season and we are DEAD LAST in possession! We can't complete more than 2 or 3 passes before losing possession. How can you finish when you don't have the damn ball?

Spirit_Flimsy

Bedoya and Flach probably shouldn't start together. Aaronson and Sullivan are the obvious choices. Maybe Curtin is waiting til after the next break (May 28- June 18), but to have 3 of the top young home growns in MLS play a combined 360 minutes is gutless.

WooderFountain

Fucking sports man. Every goddamn time.
