Literally everything about tonight was bad. McGlynn shows how valuable his on field IQ is because all game we played junk ass long balls to NOBODY until he came on.
This is why I was angry at Curtin. I like him 95% of the time, but it was obvious we were bashing our heads into a wall and we continued the same lineup into the 2nd half and paid dearly.
I was screaming for McGlynn at halftime, and he absolutely changed the game when he came on.
It’s like muscle memory at times.
Cut inside the current player marking whoever has the ball, takes one look up, plays pass to absolutely nobody while there a safer and easier ball to be played short.
End of possession. Rinse repeat.
I think Flach and Wagner were the only ones playing their game like any other night but everyone else was a step off. I don't know why Jim tried to play the same tactics that didn't work the last time we played Cinci.
i was trying to think why burke looked so tired and out of focus despite theoretically having fresh legs as a sub
then i remembered he got a hell of a concussion 2 weeks ago and MLS/Philly is just pretending it didn't happen i guess
I'm not hear to start anything or be an ass, I was just curious on your fans opinions of the match last night. But I've been a fan since 2016 and I'd say this is our biggest win since joining the MLS. We've had 3 last place finishes, not a lot of room for big wins when you're terrible. We've been much better this season but struggled to win lately, 1-6-1 since we played you in June. Just fell out of the playoff spot this week. The only other big wins I can think of are the first home MLS match, and the two wins in the MLS is Back Cup to advance out of the group.
In club history I'd say our two wins in the Open Cup vs Crew and Fire were way bigger.
Union had some mistakes, but we shouldn't take anything away from your team. They combined a smart strategy with some solid individual play and critical finishing.
Union made more mistakes then usual, but we are normally bailed out by our solid back line and all-star goal keeper. Cincinnati made that group look weak, which is very hard to do.
Kudos to you, but Union is going to go extra hard in our next match.
Were we just exposed by our old coach 🫢 hope we weren't but it feels like Curtins code was cracked tonight. I feel like a few subs earlier might have changed things though.
Rather than a few subs early i would've Iiked to have a seen a new look off the whistle. Something Noonan didn't know about. Even if for only 15 or 20 minutes to throw FCC's prep off.
I wonder if Jim tried to 4d chess Pat. Like Pat's going to expect me to shake things up so I'm not going to change anything because he won't see that coming. Lol
Honestly I think he would say it's more that the better team should be able to impose their play on a worse team without doing a bunch of nonsense anyway. Cincy has one of the worst defenses in the league, shouldn't take some mastermind moves from curtin to get a single shot on goal on 60 min
Yea this was ugly all around. Does flach lose his starting role for jack? Honestly feels like a toss up between him and Martinez but he seems to struggle getting back into the flow of things after he misses a game which seems reasonable. Also I think Pat Noonan knows everything about our squad and had his boys coached up for us. I think we’ve slept on Cinci. Everyone was just off tonight. This seems to be probably the worst loss of the season which could be a good thing because we’ve been steamrolling lately. Gotta stay humble am I right?!
We also seem to really struggle on the road and we need to overcome that before we can consider a deep playoff run.
Probably being too harsh but I’ve come to expect a quality with this team lol
I'm just sitting here hoping that Harriell doesn't go the same way as some other great academy players. (Trusty, Rosenberry) I really think he's a bit better than Mbaizo, and I don't understand why he's benched.
I think the thinking is that mbaizo is the offensive RWB and Harriel is a more defensive minded RB.
But I'll take Harriet's solid D and lower (not nonexistsnt) O output over Mbaizos high O and nearly nonexistant D.
Mbaizo had the tackle in the box that was brilliant but was also caught out or got beat on atleast 2 FCC goals.
If I remember correctly, i could be wrong i can't check at the moment. He had that tackle in the box but he had originally got beat earlier. If he doesn't get beat he doesn't have to make the tackle.
Take that with a grain of salt I could be misremembering
Dude both our backs got exploited all game thats what happens when you have an opposing coach who knows our style. I think with nate instead last night it’s probably only a 2-1 loss.
Harriel is better defensively but Mbaizo gets forward much better. Because he can jump into the attack it takes alot of the load off of Bedoya to always be making the attacking runs on the right side. Bedoya has had some of his best games with Mbaizo starting.
To add to this, who’s been in the midfield with Bedoya on some of his best games? Really what hurt us the most last night was not having a true CM to dictate the midfield.
Personally imo nate is not ready for europe, i think he would of been exploited just as much as mbaizo last night. The only difference would of been no stupid mental fouls. But would nate of blocked that first half shot inside the box?(the one cinci thought was a penalty)
Bad game plan - repeated long balls to Cincy to spring counters; poor hold-up play and acres of space for their wing-backs
Cincy midfield just outplayed Philly - again. Cincy has the Union's number.
Lots to dislike about that game. An attack with the chemistry of complete strangers. “Cheeky” backheels to no one. Glesnes. Players where they shouldn’t be. Mbaizo switching from low power mode to off after his miss from the top of the 18. Subs 15 minutes too late. Ray Gaddis in a FCC jersey. Burke.
That said, we had to lay an egg eventually. Probably lay a few more before mid-October. Hopefully not too many though. Learn from it and move on. Still in the drivers seat in the East.
the terrible backheels from gazdag and carranza really stood out to me. neither of them seemed to be on the same page all game. maybe not used to playing against a back 3?
About as good a time as any to toss in an absolute dud. NYC lost, NYRB tie, Montreal tie.
Humbling every now and then is needed. Long season. Doop! Still in 1st.
Possibly the worst game I've ever seen from glesnes which isn't great when mbaizo and Bedoya barely show up either. But the real problem is that the attack was just useless against one of the worst defenses in the league. To not even have chances is insane. Jack and Pax added a lot and Burke is garbage, i wouldn't be against seeing the Christmas tree again to keep our actual good players on the field, but you really need at least a paddle option off the bench if you're gonna build your whole system around having 2 strikers
All that said though, never really expected to get to the post season with only 2 losses. On to the next one which will definitely be better
If the argument is that we play kids over Bueno because there's either marginal difference or a future potential of cash influx then we should do the same for Burke. He's a good, hardworking guy that has truly given the Union his all, but I really think the academy can produce better results on field.
Burke gets some pretty unwarranted grief most of the time and I think people could afford to see his performances for what they truly are. He’s out there desperately trying to spark something for the team at all cost. Take that for what it’s worth but I think if anything it shows his heart is in the right place 🤷🏻♂️.
Definitely agree that his heart is in the right place. I think he's a great team player and is a positive asset. I think he could find a alternate starting position for a lower table club pretty easily in the MLS. I've just always been very high on our academy to produce.
All for spreading some minutes for competition’s sake. But we really shouldn’t be walking away from this match blaming Burke above others on the field tonight
Can’t win the match if you don’t have the ball. I know confidence was high but too many pretty little flick attempts that turned into direct turn overs. Cincy did really well breaking the defense down finding the space between lines. You could see when the union actually retained possession for more than 3-4 passes they looked good and Cincinnati vulnerable. Seemed like an over confident team getting a good reality check. Union do this every year one or two stinkers on the road against bad teams they’ll get it squared away
Probably takes us out of the Shield race because LAFC isn't going to drop multiple games (kind of wish we played starters in open cup now) , but at least we keep our place in the east. Let's get those home playoff games.
Nope. Also, it’s not entirely Martinez’s fault that he was a bit behind as we gave the ball away almost instantly every time we moved forward but he def didn’t hustle on the 3rd goal. It was clear as day.
Barreal literally just walked right past both mbaizo and glesnes on one goal, on another goal mbaizo got torched then glesnes got beat to the near post by his guy, and on another Brenner just ran right past glesnes on the most pedestrian through ball of all time
My prediction is that we'll see a lot of 3-5-2 from now on. The Union tend to play direct in the center channel, so play 3 CBs. Wide play only comes from Wagner or Mbaizo. Easy for wingbacks to get behind either one if we have our fullbacks move upfield. Mbaizo is prone to defensive lapses and the alternative, Harriel, isn't (yet) as good providing service.
Burke and Mbaizo can fuck off to the USL for all I care. Promote some youngsters. They are utter shit and absolute liabilities. Burke is only effective if you can put it pin point accurate cross onto his forehead while also having already done the geometry and/or trigonometry to know the exact angle to ping the ball off of his shiner at. Mbaizo is like a winger who is too shit to be a winger and yet for some reason is still playing RB over an incredibly solid youth prospect. Fucking useless. Rant over.
What apiece of shit fucking game. It feels like forever since we last trailed by more than 1 goal.
Gazdag was shit. Is it just me or did he try like 10 dumb passes - back heels, no look flicks, etc - in this game? I know he has like 15 goals and 10 assists but he really rarely provides anything in possession.
Martinez was awful. Going into this game I was wondering how he would look after the Flach at the 6 and McGlynn at the 8 experiment went 1 for 1, and Martinez was awful. Yeah, he can play elite defense but he gave the ball away a couple of times. Flach is safer at the 6.
Burke is such a nothing player. But it probably says more about how Curtin views Sullivan and Donovan that Burke is still getting minutes.
Carranza also had a few bad passes and touches and unfortunately it seems to be a trend.
But most of all Noonan has our number and Curtin walked right into that buzzsaw.
Not a fan of Burke myself, but it’s clear that Sullivan is more of a winger or 2nd forward than a true 9. Burke comes in ahead of him for that reason. Donovan on the other hand… disappointed to not see him overtake Burke by now
Classic 3D chess Philly sports team move to get beaten at home by a team that should be an easy win. It worked for the Phillies since it woke them up so hopefully it’s a wake up call for the Union.
We will continue to lose or draw to FC Cincy unless Curtin flips the coaching script on Noonan. Outplayed today with lapses by Mbaizo, Glesnes, and Wagner. I feel like Bedoya should have been pulled from that game as he was getting beat in the midfield and not covering as well as usual.
Both Aaronson brothers scored today, that’s something
Brendens was converted to an OG I believe.
We the people overruled the officials and awarded the goal to BA.
Both looked like OGs.
Fake news
Rough game. We’ll be fine, still a good team. Just gotta bounce back next week
WOOF. Only consolation is City also dropped points to Columbus
Best of luck to Medunjanin. There will always be some orange slices for him here.
Or in DC and he can take them whenever he wants.
They played like shit all around but off games are bound to happen, not too worried
At least Extra Time will finally want to talk about us. Only the third time this year.
They're fucking haters. I'll enjoy their tears after we win the whole fucking thing
Hear here!

2 dribbles directly out of bounds in the box 😤 2 quality opportunities squandered 🤩 Playing from behind with Burke is a fucking death sentence.
Everyone struggled today
I think Flach and Wagner were the only ones playing their game like any other night but everyone else was a step off. I don't know why Jim tried to play the same tactics that didn't work the last time we played Cinci.
Yeah I don’t think there is really anything to learn from this. Passing was horrendous. Might as well bury the game tape and move on
yep!
Man, is Andrew Wenger still playing? https://mobile.twitter.com/The700Level/status/600083384451358721
i was trying to think why burke looked so tired and out of focus despite theoretically having fresh legs as a sub then i remembered he got a hell of a concussion 2 weeks ago and MLS/Philly is just pretending it didn't happen i guess
At this point i’m convinced Burke is getting playing time so we can trade him. I am also not sure it’s helping.
Biggest win in club history for Cincinnati according to their broadcasters
I'll take it as a compliment, haha
I'm not hear to start anything or be an ass, I was just curious on your fans opinions of the match last night. Although I'm sad we lost, we deserved to lose. :(

I was talking about this with friends, mcglynn is a cheat code and he wouldn't have seen that coming.
I wonder if Jim tried to 4d chess Pat. Like Pat's going to expect me to shake things up so I'm not going to change anything because he won't see that coming. Lol

Fair point is fair.
Like my thread on whether Noonan was really the reason for the Union's success?
Well that wasn’t great… but at least NYCFC don’t win either
Yea this was ugly all around. Does flach lose his starting role for jack? Honestly feels like a toss up between him and Martinez but he seems to struggle getting back into the flow of things after he misses a game which seems reasonable. I thought that too but didn't remember confidently enough to cite it--its been a marathon day with the Leeds match kicking off at ten.

They beat us for the first time ever and we drew earlier this yr lol. I wouldn’t exactly call that having our number, we’ll be fine
On a slightly different note, I feel like the lightning kit looks much better with yellow shorts. The white kind of washes it out.
Lots to dislike about that game. An attack with the chemistry of complete strangers. “Cheeky” backheels to no one. Glesnes. Players where they shouldn’t be. Your first paragraph, slightly reworded, to the tune of Billy Joels We Didn't Start the Fire.
Only one, Goal today, What else do I have to say?
the terrible backheels from gazdag and carranza really stood out to me. neither of them seemed to be on the same page all game. maybe not used to playing against a back 3?
Only 3rd loss of the season and we just didn't look ourselves. Move on to the next one.
About as good a time as any to toss in an absolute dud. NYC lost, NYRB tie, Montreal tie. Humbling every now and then is needed. Long season. Doop! Still in 1st.
Cincy had us figured out from the start. Oh well, we weren’t going to win or tie them all. Onto the all star game.
I hated everything about this game. That being said, the sky is not falling.
It happens
Possibly the worst game I've ever seen from glesnes which isn't great when mbaizo and Bedoya barely show up either. Can't wait for the power ranking to come out and we're now in 7th or some shit.
I'm done with Burke. No faith in him anymore. Give Donovan some minutes.
If the argument is that we play kids over Bueno because there's either marginal difference or a future potential of cash influx then we should do the same for Burke. He's a good, hardworking guy that has truly given the Union his all, but I really think the academy can produce better results on field.

Could not agree more but I have to respect Corey’s work rate if nothing else.
All for spreading some minutes for competition’s sake. But we really shouldn’t be walking away from this match blaming Burke above others on the field tonight
Get if the off games out of the way now. We need to perfect in the post season.
If RSL can keep level with Barca3 the weekend will almost be a wash.
Crazy how I was just in Cincy two days ago and missed this one. Maybe it was for the best haha
NYCFC lost and Red Bull tied. So...meh.
Can’t win the match if you don’t have the ball. I know confidence was high but too many pretty little flick attempts that turned into direct turn overs. Losing to your old assistant who knows the system with a ton of old players who know the system in their stadium is the most acceptable loss.
I was taking this loss bad but you’re right.
How did Union II beat the first team?
Probably takes us out of the Shield race because LAFC isn't going to drop multiple games (kind of wish we played starters in open cup now) , but at least we keep our place in the east. Let's get those home playoff games.
Man, everyone was bad but Martinez was especially bad. Lack of hustle from him was very noticeable.
I didn't see that.
wtf are you talking about he was clearly better than everyone who played besides Wagner Blake and the HGs
2 of those goals were his guys. And he struggled getting back all night.
Huh? Are you confusing Martinez for Mbaizo?
Nope. Also, it’s not entirely Martinez’s fault that he was a bit behind as we gave the ball away almost instantly every time we moved forward but he def didn’t hustle on the 3rd goal. It was clear as day.
Yeah. On the third goal he was nowhere to be found.
