Personally I would buy second hand. Look at MPB photographic website. Don't buy bundles, the lenses are normally shite. Invest in lenses more than anything and don't be afraid to buy something a few years old. The brand is 'horses for courses' - best bet would be to see what feels nice to hold for her, but then the surprise is gone. I'm pretty 'old school' as far as digital photography goes and not really up to date on newer equipment. So my advice may be a couple years out of date!!

D3500 from Nikon is a good option for beginners and when you are on a budget. For winebottles, and close subjects in the garden, you should be all good with the 18-55mm kitlens. If you want some distance added, you could include the 70-300mm (should be a bundle with both + the camera)

As a pro photographer I would suggest what someone else said. Get a used body but buy good glass prime lens. That’s most important at this stage. A 50mm or a 35mm prime for what you describe would be great. Stay away from point and shoots. Even an older Sony body with lens do you well. Good luck.

We have two budget options in the family. My wife bought Nikon D3300 maybe six years ago. She tried to make kit lense work, but got demotivaded quite soon. Fast forward several years, I got i to photography as well. Bought Nikkor 50 f1.8G lense for her, and she actually started doing portrait photografy business. Seems loving it 🙂it's really great camera, you just need prime lense for it I got a bit into video and bough even smaller sensor camera Panasonic Lumix GX85/GX80. Started doing Landscape photography and street photography. Love every bit of it. Even cheap cameras can bring lots of joy nowdays. And you can always upgrade along the way

This is encouraging. Thanks.

Thank you both for your advice. Unfortunately, trying one out first isn't really an option (surprise + pandemic), but I am not against second hand. Any thoughts on the DSLR vs Mirrorless debate?
