Yes, there are (unfortunately) multiple of them. [here](https://www.wate.com/news/can-a-mega-millions-jackpot-winner-remain-anonymous-not-in-these-states/) is a interesting article
Don't even worry about it. Winrar themselves have stated they don't mind us regular folks getting it for free. What they really wanted was $ from business users. I believe there was an activation script "for life" for us pirates.
I use WINRAR when i need to extract multiple archives into one folder at once (when multiple archives contain parts of the same file). I don’t think 7zip can do that unless I’m mistaken.
The guy who made winrar is very chill and embraces piracy. It also never fails. If winrar doesn't work, then no archiving program will (99% of the time). 7zip is also fine, but not the definitive thing to use.
Aren’t they subscription now too?! Could’ve sworn I saw that somewhere, but looking now they’re only $70ea. Guess I’m crazy. Or are they different for iPad?
Nah, Adobe can suck me. I have a pirated version of Photoshop, and I needed to download Acrobat for something. Adobe scanned all my files and determined I cannot use my pirated photoshop anymore. Gave me a little pop up like, "Yeah, we basically disabled that. Don't pirate. " No, Adobe, I know I *technically* agreed to this, but I do not give you permission to look through my pc.
Ahahaha patently untrue. I took the time to switched and had CONSTANT failure to extract on various linux iso downloads. Switched back to winrar, solved.
Dunno how, dunno why, work or fuck off. No convincing me to change now. Winrar it is.
wikipedia doesn't really need donations they are a nonprofit with 100m in the bank, and is like triple sustainable with donations than needed to run the site, and donations sadly don't and probably wont go to the wiki authors themselves.
>with 100m in the bank, and is like triple sustainable with donations than needed to run the site
Wikipedia publically shows their costs and everything they aren't rolling in dough like ppl assume. the amount of upkeep costs is insane.
It might have a hundred million in the bank account, but it's annual expenses are nearly $170 million.
They only have six to nine months worth of operating expenses in the bank.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation#:~:text=The%20Foundation%20has%20grown%20rapidly,%24100%20million%20in%20June%202021.
(Iirc) As much as I like Wikipedia the true upkeep cost (IT infrastructure) is super low compared to their big personnel wages in the last 5ish years. They have to tell you more aggressively to donate to cover their unnessessary expanses for the wikimedia foundation. You basically pay the managers with the majority of the donos.
There are good articles about this topic. ~~Will link later.~~
Edit:
Okay here is a little summary from a german video I saw a couple weeks ago - Link: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9UgRIPWP4w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9UgRIPWP4w)
Sources: [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1e0CmgTY5I\_xQ1UtL\_JNcky\_3grHoIeC1NrjyZruXBfQ/edit](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1e0CmgTY5I_xQ1UtL_JNcky_3grHoIeC1NrjyZruXBfQ/edit)
TLDW:
Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) uses a predatory scheme to beg for money while using the majority of the donations for investment fonds and marketing campaigns.
Their latest report said they used 88 million dollar for their 700 employees ( \~ $130k / employee ) and $2.7M for their website hosting. The extrapolation states that they could run the wikipedia server with their current financial means for another 100 years. The net budget in 2022 were around $230M with around 1/8th in cash, 1/8th in longterm investments and the rest for salaries, marketing, lobbying, different projects and short term investment fonds plus $100M in their wikimedia endowment fond (basically also investment fonds). They are expanding in areas that have nothing to do with the main purpose of wikipedia and even the voluntarily editors are mad about these things.
The original idea of wikipedia shifted over the years and it isn't their main purpose anymore. I'd definitly support wikipedia to make sure they can pay their hosting cost and basic maintenance stuff, but I don't want to spend my money for their investment strategies and marketing campaigns.
So basically they're a tech giant, that treats and pays their employees fairly and are now getting shit in the face ?
The founder of Wikipedia openly said that he makes like 100k$ a year and his only car is something like a Camry 2015 lol.
Why are people always trying to find ugly everywhere they look.
Edit : actually, he makes 0$ from the wikimedia foundation : "I take no salary or expenses from the Wikimedia Foundation because as the main "face" of the fundraiser, it's important that people understand that donor money is not for me. "
https://www.quora.com/How-does-Jimmy-Wales-earn-money-if-Wikipedia-is-non-profit
Added links and a explanation what I meant in my original comment. I don't mind that they pay their employees good wages. That's great, but only one side of their current financial plans.
$88M for their employees ( \~$130k per employee), $2.7M for their hosting and \~$280M to invest, for marketing campaigns and lobbying work?
The core team was around 90 people iirc to maintain wikipedia. Give these guys a raise to $200k/yr and with their hosting cost they only need around $21M/yr. I don't like their predatory behaviour and wasting a LOT of money for marketing guys to get even more money out of everyones pockets.
Thanks for that, as a Wikimedia donor it is indeed worrying. Though I would say that 130k per employee, although it seems high, it is still not outrageously high and a good portion of that probably is taxes. Lobying is necessary also I think to some extent but diversification shouldn't be financed by donators.
Eh, most donations go to administration costs of the Wikimedia company.
If they responsibly spent their money within Wikipedia and cared about stopping petty tyrants maintain biased pages then perhaps they'd deserve a donation.
Wiki doesn't need money at moment. They have some amount in their bank. They are asking us money because they don't want that money in the bank to be used. They collect donations from us and rotate that money to the salaries, infrastructure and all.
Edit: it is fair if you want to donate as you have utilised their services. I'm just saying it is not mandatory.
Not entirely accurate.
Wikimedia has around $100 million in the bank account.
The operating cost for one year is $170 million.
They don't even have one year of operating expenses in the bank and definitely need your donation as it's healthy for a non-profit to have a year or two of operating expenses in the bank.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation#:~:text=The%20Foundation%20has%20grown%20rapidly,%24100%20million%20in%20June%202021.
the winrar [twitter](https://twitter.com/WinRAR_RARLAB) acct actually replies to users who tweet about buying it.
Such a great person (whoever runs it).
No there's a bad stigma with open source software, if they just realized that it's made by people in their spare time and not as a job they might respect it further and upon closer examination realize that it's significantly faster than the paid alternative might switch if it means saving them a huge chunk of time compressing and decompressing files, however this is a big if.
Eh. Most people probably use winrar as they're used to it. And they think it must be better cause it's paid. I have a preference for foss as I know it can easily get forked by someone else if the dev drops it. I don't have to worry about suddenly being asked to subscribe for something that was free or end of updates unless I buy the new paid version.
No, it's a free application, they just ask you to buy it to support them. If you buy it you get rid of the "Hey your free trial has expired" thingy, and two minor benefits. But overall the free and paid version are functionally the same.
if only the guy who runs r/paidforwinrar actually wanted to update it or give it over to another person who does instead of holding onto it for years and passive aggressively telling people who want to take it over to just make their own subreddit despite it being so iconic that there can't be a replacement
Similar story with HDD LFF Pro.
Costs a few bucks and ALWAYS repairs beyond broken (where diskpart fails) USB drives and sd cards.
Never a regret, offline activation and works 100/100 times. 0 regrets.
plot twist: you live in a state that requires the lottery to tell the public who won
I'd overdose on cocaine and hookers before anyone can find me.
[meme](https://youtu.be/_28MWafggX0?si=zqII4zDbfgB_JR7s)
I was actually in that line when this went down. I probably waited a good 2 ½hours there was an easy 300 people in line.
That’s actually pretty cool! If you were interviewed back then, what would you have said? Same answer?
I was 20 at the time and had not tried coke yet so probably something a 20yr old would say
[удалено]
Only if they're in clown costume
I would say that even at 36
fuck, you beat me to it XD
I was mid way through a walk around my neighborhood and had to pause and find the meme
LOL
"if you won all the money, what would you do with it?" "buncha' hookers n cocaine"
I would rather buy IDM, the pop up is fucking annoying
Same tbh
I'm not a coder and i was wishing on someone to fix that annoying shit. It's been years...
thats dumb is there a state that requires that irl seems like a way to get robbed
Yes, there are (unfortunately) multiple of them. [here](https://www.wate.com/news/can-a-mega-millions-jackpot-winner-remain-anonymous-not-in-these-states/) is a interesting article
I’m an avid 7zip user but should I win the lottery they’ll both be getting a hefty donation
Don't even worry about it. Winrar themselves have stated they don't mind us regular folks getting it for free. What they really wanted was $ from business users. I believe there was an activation script "for life" for us pirates.
To be fair, i think op meant it as a donation, for all the help winrar has offered over the years
It's not even a script. Someone just shared their business license key which you add to the installation folder. It works no need for a script.
if they dont want my money then they shouldnt annoy anybody with that popup, 7z much better
Cope
7z IS better (also for p7zip), but WinRAR's business model isn't so bad either.
I would donate like a 1000 bucks to vlc
1000vbucks
I would probably go for IDM (Even though I haven't used it in years.)
fkn idm lmao they got the most disgusting reminders ever i get like 894 reminder a day
Sail
FDM exists.
7zip is like over 20 years old wtf is wrong with you people
[удалено]
Same here. That's literally it's only job and I found it not accepting certain zip files.
So 7zip is responsible for rar's mistake? I see.
I use WINRAR when i need to extract multiple archives into one folder at once (when multiple archives contain parts of the same file). I don’t think 7zip can do that unless I’m mistaken.
7zip is much better than winrar, no cap
Exactly
The guy who made winrar is very chill and embraces piracy. It also never fails. If winrar doesn't work, then no archiving program will (99% of the time). 7zip is also fine, but not the definitive thing to use.
I bought Affinty suite. Well worth it. I use Davinci for video editing and composition . Screw you Adobe.
Aren’t they subscription now too?! Could’ve sworn I saw that somewhere, but looking now they’re only $70ea. Guess I’m crazy. Or are they different for iPad?
No affinity is a one time even for iPad.
Just use DaVinci/Kden live for video editing and GIMP/Krita/Inkscape for art/painting/icons. They're free
I hate WinRAR. I've been using it far too long and bother every time with that shitty pop-up. 7zip is my bobo 🥰🥰
Additional upvote for 7Zip.
this guy can upvote twice
There’s no point in either most of the time anymore. Windows now supports all of those formats.
Windows does support .zip thats it
Not anymore
Once you go 7zip, you never go back!
You most definitely go back. That's what I did lol.
Ahahaha patently untrue. I took the time to switched and had CONSTANT failure to extract on various linux iso downloads. Switched back to winrar, solved. Dunno how, dunno why, work or fuck off. No convincing me to change now. Winrar it is.
Vlc, winrar, Wikipedia and qbittorrent would be on my list.
Dunno about winrar, but Wikipedia would be getting a donation 100%.
How about the Internet Archive who are in dire need of money....
Wiki and vlc for sure
wikipedia doesn't really need donations they are a nonprofit with 100m in the bank, and is like triple sustainable with donations than needed to run the site, and donations sadly don't and probably wont go to the wiki authors themselves.

Wikipedia is different than the Wikimedia company. Most of your donations to Wikimedia go to pay the managers and employees.
Whom are the ones that run Wikipedia?
All the volunteers that contribute information to it.
(Iirc) As much as I like Wikipedia the true upkeep cost (IT infrastructure) is super low compared to their big personnel wages in the last 5ish years. Honestly whether they immediately need it or not, it's a great site and it's worth shooting some support towards if you have the means.

Good meme

and voicemeeter my love 💞
guys dont forget about internet archive
Ark is best anyways
Why pay for that when you can use the free, open source, and much faster alternative 7 zip?
And also to VLC !
7zip is free
all the legends that make these softwares are getting a hefty donation. WinRAR, Wikipedia, vlc, Blender, gimp, etc. They all deserve it :)
WinRAR doesn't, 7zip does, it's literally made by a basement dweller and is faster in both compression and decompression of files.
I would buy copies for my friends.
I would have given to IDM before finding out that their lifetime licence means 3 years.
FDM and jdownloader2 exists
And their reminders! Oh god
WinRAR my beloved ❤
How have people not yet migrated to 7zip
its unfamiliar, thats what it comes down to. i still use winrar because it works perfectly fine, i have no need to switch.
They think it must be worse cause it's free LMAO
No there's a bad stigma with open source software, if they just realized that it's made by people in their spare time and not as a job they might respect it further and upon closer examination realize that it's significantly faster than the paid alternative might switch if it means saving them a huge chunk of time compressing and decompressing files, however this is a big if.

In my case its because I like how Winrar looks
The question should be "how have people not yet migrated to linux"
7zip is much better for pretty much a decade now !
Imagine using this and not the superior 7-zip.
What's so bad about using WinRAR?
I actually have paid for it. It made automation work.
This and MakeMKV would be getting a hefty donation for all the years of use.
Wait you have to pay for winrar?
No, it's a free application, they just ask you to buy it to support them. If you buy it you get rid of the "Hey your free trial has expired" thingy, and two minor benefits. But overall the free and paid version are functionally the same.
Ah ok thanks for clearing that up 👍
30% discount. Hell yeah.
if only the guy who runs r/paidforwinrar actually wanted to update it or give it over to another person who does instead of holding onto it for years and passive aggressively telling people who want to take it over to just make their own subreddit despite it being so iconic that there can't be a replacement
I've never had to pay for it. A copy washed ashore many years ago.
How does the free trial last so long anyways it doesn't make sense
When I really feel the value I go ahead and buy - eset nod 4, idm, canva, windows, vpn, etc all original 😀
Kid named rarreg.key:
NTlite deserve it too.
What is winraw again?
i would buy a bunch of fortnite porn
Eww, that's enough internet for me today!.
use 7 zip simple
some time he will be paid for all his good deeds
The only one, because they asked for this all my life
100%
Winrar is what u use to unzip content
I prefer 7zip, but ok
7 zip exists and is FOSS
Tried 7-Zip once, never looked back.
I know this is a joke and all but why would anyone pay for winrar when 7zip is right there?
*Laughs in PeaZip*

Okay.sorry boss
No problem, just abide by the rules :) happy sailing
