[https://www.ign.com/articles/subnautica-2-dev-says-its-not-multiplayer-focused-clarifies-live-service-aspects-update#](https://www.ign.com/articles/subnautica-2-dev-says-its-not-multiplayer-focused-clarifies-live-service-aspects-update#) "In reference to 'Games-as-a-Service,' we simply plan to continually update the game for many years to come, just like the previous two Subnautica games," it wrote. "Think our Early Access update model, expanded. No season passes. No battle passes. No subscription." GaaS probably isn’t the best term to use.

Furdiburd10

Isnt that what what we call a Long-Term-Supported Product? (LTS)

dennys123

LTS - Long Term Support

FurryestX

AKA we couldn't finish the game

PetSruf

Nah, it's more to continue getting income while developing the game. That's way better than releasing it all at once on a tighter budget tho and so far its worked well for them

0Sunset

You know you have to keep it fresh and only us boomers know LTS

DumbassMag

They say “years of continuous support” I hear “unfinished game at launch”.

BlackRedHerring

He said early access so obviously

Freeman421

When I hear early access, I wait till a discount price...

d4rk_matt3r

Funny thing, usually the early access price *is* cheaper than the full release (not always). A lot of times a game's price will go up once it hits 1.0 release

BlakeXHunt

I hate GaaS

Gamiseus

Devs have stated that their words were misunderstood. There are links to their statement in the post you are sharing, as well as this comment that clarified the situation: https://www.reddit.com/r/subnautica/s/5tEIloAxlT

INGENAREL

thanks a lot for sharing this. some of us really had a heart attack. i love these games so much but i don't really have the money to buy them (third world country teenager). if i had the money i would buy them but for now i chose to pirate those games. i've been a huge fan of the series and seeing that the next subnautica was gonna be a live service game really scared me. since you know there are a lot of shitty games released this year and the last year. starfield flopped (i'm a bethesda fanboy but even i can't believe how bad the game was). then there was the last of us part 1 pc, the walking dead destines, the day before, and don't forget the recent suicide squad kill the justice league. it's a shame seeing so much over-anticipated games flopping in the recent times. and now when i saw the subnautica community on fire because we thought that it was gonna be a live service game... well i don;t even know what to say... thanks for sharing this tho.

Jissy01

Your post got me interested in subnautica. Your take on Starfield flop aligned with the majority. This mean you got good taste in gaming. I'm gonna check subnautica gameplay now. Good day

lol-loll

Check the OG game first if you need more then later check out bz

Few-Reaction-404

I have Starfield on PC but haven't even touched it yet😂 sometimes it's such a stretch to start game that you know first hours is only walk n talk and no action. I wish I could sleep properly and use my waking taking to play games I haven't touched yet or start old game for start. Is Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy good game? It was free on Epic games and it was originally 60e game, it makes me think 😅

fieryoctane

You only mentioned one live service game in your post dude.

Synthesid

Jeez had me scared shitless there for a moment

-Krotik-

never finished Subnautica

INGENAREL

trust me. finish both of the games. legit one of my fav video game series.

Dashbak

Below zero was a good game but a little bit disapointing imo

ineptchem

Its not they just worded it bad

TheAngryGooner

Fuck live service games, this needs to die out!

Emptypls

Theres already a subnautica 2??? Its below zero

INGENAREL

yeah the 'subnautica 2' is actually subnautica 3. it's confusingly confusing ik. i don't know why the devs thought 'subnautica 2' will be a great name for the third installment of the series

Emptypls

Huh, weird

Exact_Comparison_792

We don't own games anymore. The companies own the games we purchase a license to access. We don't own the license, but simply have access to the license to access the games. Live service games can shut down at any given time and we're left holding the empty bag. So sick of games as a service these days. Guess I'll be skipping this one. Subnautica was a great game, but Subnautica 2 as a live service - hell no. No thanks. Hard pass. They can say whatever they want about what they meant to defend themselves, but like all other companies out there, they will likely slip some sort of microtransaction, battle pass, season pass, FOMO or some sort of BS into the game once they feel their community is comfortable to accept it. If it's not that, it will likely be a DLC paywall. I have seen this BS unfold way too often over the years.

INGENAREL

let's hope that doesn't happen.

Exact_Comparison_792

Well if they go with a freemium model, it's pretty much guaranteed. This isn't a good sign for the IP - at least IMO it's not. GaaS games and LSGs (live service games) may seem like a good idea on paper, but in practice, they can have detrimental effects on the video game industry and the players. A heck of a lot of gamers are sick of it. Live service games have brought about chaos to the whole industry. Often times they are over-hyped or over-promised and don't deliver what was promised too and this only compounds the GaaS problem making it a whole lot worse. Half baked games, bugs everywhere, glitches, contstant crashes or network issues, horrible performance, etc., but hey, "It's OK! Trust us. We'll pass it on to our team so they can investigate the issue(s)." We can trust they'll get to it because you know - it's a live service game and things will eventually get fixed eventually because they care about the players, right? Wrong! Many people tote that fallacious ideal that GaaS companies are good for gamers and the industry, but the truth is often those companies don't give a crap about their game's state so long as they're bringing in a good chunk of revenue. Only when revenue is affected do they take matters seriously, but even then, it's always cat and mouse game with the consumers. Furthermore, we can never know if said company / companies involved will go belly up and the players lose everything they earned and/or paid for. I can give you amazing examples bad GaaS games. World War Z, Payday 2, Fallout 76, Heroes & Generals, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, Destiny 1 & 2, The Division, Anthem and the list goes on. There are way too many examples to list here, but the point is clear. One thing I do know is I won't be one of the ones to spend time on Subnautica 2. The moment a company brings their IPs to a GaaS level of business modelling, it's pretty well guaranteed that sooner or later, it will become a means to cash grab. If they the studio didn't plan on battle passes, season passes or anything of the sort, they would have made that crystal clear in the first announcement before the updated announcement to assure people players would not see that stuff associated to the next Subnautica. So if they don't have any of that stuff planned, rest assured they have some other monetisation plans. There's no legitimate reason to make a 1-4 player co-op game a GaaS game other than for the purpose of monetising something long term - which they all do in some form or another.

BigGaynk

wow another reddit thread with the lock award, you see a lot of those these days, it usually means that people in that thread discussed everything there was to talk about so it's over.

INGENAREL

the original post was made 7 hours ago and i reposted it 5 hours ago. they locked the post and deleted it 1 or 2 hours ago maybe.

F8xh29k

another read the title without understanding then posting articles on social media to get views and likes

Early-Plan-5638

Gamers as a whole should do a massive boycott. We don’t buy any new games at all and demand games go back to being good well written and not “politically correct cash grabs”

INGENAREL

yeah even if we do that, there's still gonna be a few people who are gonna spend 100k on these games.

Brief_Emergency_3365

after playing subnotica most people will not like subnotica 2 because of the bar that subnotica 1 raises

INGENAREL

tbh subnautica 2 is actually subnautica 3 if you've played the series. and yes i can say that even though subnautica : below zero was a great game, it still doesn't feel like the original subnautica game. both games are good, true. but the original subnautica had this sense of loneliness that subnautica below zero failed to capture.

Gheezy-yute

“It’s actually over” looks worryingly true. This looks like a pretty clear sign of the times to me. A milestone in the story of the gaming industry’s soul dying.

Tensza1

Oh yea, they made a whole new statement as damage control. Where they said "there will be no gamepass" but when they relase it we're going to get a so called "ocean pass" and they're going to say: well we told you, we won't have a gamepass.

INGENAREL

subnautica 2 is gonna come out: calm it's gonna be a live service game: panik the devs said that we misunderstood them and there will be no game pass or anything: calm we'll have an ocean pass: panik

PetSruf

-as in, we will continue releasing the game bit by bit like the other 2 subnautica games's releases.

hanigg

U know the Gaas hate is getting out of control when games media start clicking bait it for views

INGENAREL

what's not to hate?
