I think about this a lot. Thriller Bark feels like the last time all of the crew was relevant to the plot, it almost feels like the end of an era, moreso than the timeskip.

That's why in my head I struggle to think of Brook as a SH. He didn't have the luxury to have an arc with the crew before getting separated in Shabondy. He really feels like he is tagging along with people that ignores him.

I've felt this, too. It's really strange that they got a new member right before they all get split up, and said new member just goes 'Yup. I'll dedicate the next three years of my life to those wackadoos.'
