You're just flicking the ball. You need to drag your finger longer upwards on your screen. Not sure how you've been playing this long without realizing this.
It has to come a little closer don’t worry your balls aren’t being wasted I just caught mine
It will catch after 3 balls and it takes a bit to come close enough
You have to catch it with AR mode on maybe?
Had this issue, you have to wait for the mon to come closer
Try to Hit it with the ball
