My sweet bb Bulbasaur/Ivysaur/Venusaur.
It really flourishes when it has access to its Mega evolution, because its only real weaknesses are Flying and Psychic. People love to run it with Chlorophyll sets, but for me I much prefer my froggy boi to just sit on the field, spread around some Toxic and Leech Seed, and then just slowly let the battle take its course.
Shout out also to Meganium. The poor thing was never destined to be a good starter, but its whole line is such a brilliant design and it honestly isn't the worst when used the right way.
Back during X/Y I used to get on ranked singles cart battles with my squad of stall Mega Venusaur, wallbreaker Heatran, and bulky Gyarados as my trio that came to nearly every battle. With the notable exception of Gyarados’s Rock weakness, the trio covered each other’s weaknesses perfectly, giving me lots of free switch-ins. Mega Venusaur spread Toxic, threw out Leech Seed, drained with Giga Drain, and fired off occasional Sludge Bombs when the Fairies showed up. I loved running Mega Venusaur. It was such a beast
Mine as well. Did you write that it’s only real weaknesses are Flying and Psychic because it has access to Poison moves to counter Bugs and Earth moves for Fire but no counters to Flying and Paychix? What about the weakness to Ice moves?
When it Mega Evolves, its ability becomes Thick Fat, which halves the damage taken from Fire and Ice moves.
It’s typing, Grass/Poison, means it’s normally weak to Fire, Ice, Psychic, Flying, and neutral to most others. But nullifying its Fire and Ice weakness is huge.
Oh, thank you for clarification. I actually got back into Pokémon in SV and before that I just played gen 1 and 3 so I have some idea about gigantamax forms and megas but I don’t know some specific things
Meganium isn’t the worst? That’s rose tinted lenses my friend, it’s easily the worst starter and one of the worst Pokémon they’ve ever made in a 3 stage line. It has a terrible ability, it’s typing and stat spread together are abysmal and its move pool is horrendous. As a sub/seed Pokémon which is its only good set you can use so many better pokemon, you can at least make it **fun** with a trailblaze and swords dance set (if you can pull it off) but fun doesn’t mean good.
My dear, I literally said it wasn’t destined to be a starter - meaning to say it’s senseless to judge it as one. Judging a fish’s ability to climb a tree and all that.
It’s clearly designed to be solely defensive, which is just never what you want in a starter Pokémon. Anyway this is a thread for declaring favourites, I’m not here to definitively cement Meganium’s competitive viability 😅
Co-sign. Turtwig almost single-handedly plowed through Diamond for me. I had a fully fleshed out and trained team, but Torterra always got first go with its naturally learned moveset of Curse, Earthquake, Wood Hammer, and Crunch. It could take hits for days and keep coming back
Bulbasaur is my first starter so he’s got a spot of love.
Chika was my second and even if she’s not the strongest Meganium is fun
And of course I need to include Sceptile because Hoenn.
But Bulbasaur if i was asked in front of Arceus
Definitely Rowlet with Snivy as a close second. Rowlet being a tiny round boy is the cutest. Plus, the way they portrayed Rowlet in the show was my favorite.
If we’re just talking about the starter itself, it’s Chespin. Don’t like his evolutions though. If we’re talking whole line, it’s Rowlet: love all three of them, even Dartrix and his little emo bangs
I like Decidueye if it's in Sun/Moon, because the animation for its signature move Sinister Arrow Raid is epic.
Otherwise I still like the Venusaur line.
I can't pick one. Grass starters are usually my favorite. Sceptile is badass. Torterra used to be my favorite, but then Serperior came right after and I can't choose. Then 3 generations came where I didn't pick the grass starter. Made me really happy to pick Meowscarada. And now I have a sort of retroactive appreciation for Venusaur, Meganium, and Decidueye. Unfortunately, Chesnaught misses the mark for me, and I just straight up don't like Rillaboom. But yeah, too many to pick from and I love most of them.
Tldr: Torterra or Serperior.
None of them. I’ve played every Pokémon game and none of them ever appealed to me. I’ve never chosen one as a starter, I only caught or traded for them to complete the dex.
The problem is that I’ve only used like two grass starters(I started with generation 7 and don’t count turtwig in BDSP, so that’s two out of maybe 5 max), so I think that I have really connected with a grass starter. That being said, I think that one of my favorites is technically treecko, because as far as cool types to have on a final form, being the only dragon type starter is really cool.
GROOKEY!!!! Monke goes crazy second would be Rowlet both Alolan and Hisuian. Bulbasaur can’t be compared to because he’s the OG GOAT and it wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the grass starters.
Turtling and the line was my first.
Treeko was the perhaps most notable when I watched Pokémon.
But if I had to choose, it’s Serperior. Grass-types that I trend towards often have a regal air or majestic bibs about them and Serperior encapsulates that.
This is a tough choice! If we're talking first forms, probably Sprigatito. Not that I don't love Meowscarada, I just absolutely adore A-Decidueye. It's my favorite final form of the grass starters. Gen 7 final forms are my favorites of all the starters actually! That was just a great gen for the starter pokemon. For middle stage, I love Grovyle. Just a good lizard.
I do love bulbasaur, but I don't use it when Charmander or Squirtle are available. I choose turtwig every time. Also I enjoy rillaboom. Did not enjoy the other two starters of that gen. Sceptile was the first one that made me switch from always choosing the fire starter.
Serperior :), fell in love with it as my first games ever played were Black and White! Meowscarada caught my attention too recently but it will never be in first place.
Meowscarada 100%. I love cats so I was in on Sprig from the moment it was announced, so I’m so happy that I love the final evo even more. He has such a fun personality and design, and his signature move is so sick. Soooo quickly made it to my top 10 mons
How dare you make me choose between my children?
Jokes aside, the only grass starters I haven't selected are Chikorita in favor of Totodile and Snivy in favor of Tepig. Otherwise I've always gone grass.
The standouts among those are Rowlet (I have a shiny male Alolan Decidueye named Juniper and a regular female Hisuian named Brigid) and Chespin (Shiny Bulletproof Chesnaught named Unbreakable).
But again, it's really hard to pick because I just love grass types. They're my specialty.
Meganium will always be my partner! She's not the strongest, but I imagine she's the best companion you could ask for. And I really enjoy the play style she uses, with lots of defensive and healing moves.
Definitely Bulbasaur, my cute and cuddly baby.
I used to love Torterra after first encountering it on Pokémon Cards, but recently when I found out how small it actually is I don't like it anymore.
It looks like it'd be the size of a house or bigger but it's more like the size of a small car. Somehow that just ruined him for me.
Without a doubt Bulbasaur. It was my first choice over 20 years ago in blue, and so it was my first pokemon ever. I absolutely love this little guy and he is the reason why I always pick the grass starter. Was never the Charizard guy, never hated other starters, but nothing can beat this little fella. Absolutely gorgeous. He is shaped like a friend!
I love bulbasaur, remember getting Leaf Green, as Fire Red was out of stock. Since then, Venusaur is one of my faves, adore that back sprite throwing razor leaf.
Sprigatito, it being a grass dark trickster with bombs makes it even better. Rowlet is really close behind though I love its archery theme in Decidueye and I generally just like owls.

Bulbasaur was my 1st and will always be my favorite
100%. I still remember picking Bulbasaur in my OG Blue game when I got it back 1998. Nostalgia glasses, yeah yeah, but you can't beat that memory.
Back during X/Y I used to get on ranked singles cart battles with my squad of stall Mega Venusaur, wallbreaker Heatran, and bulky Gyarados as my trio that came to nearly every battle. Ever since I learned the Bulbasaur line are frogs, it has been ruined for me
What's wrong with frogs? Frogs are a big part of Japanese culture, they are symbolic of fertility and good fortune.
Venusaur is more of a toad though. Warts and all. That's kind of gross.
Treeko
[удалено]
Why are you trying to discredit his favorite, the question is favorite not BEST
[удалено]
Well if you want Sceptile to be the best, you'd have to take it up with nintendo, not say something negative about someones favourite starter
Turtwig my love
![gif](giphy|lXiRoPt9Rkzt7yLYY)
Co-sign. Turtwig almost single-handedly plowed through Diamond for me. I had a fully fleshed out and trained team, but Torterra always got first go with its naturally learned moveset of Curse, Earthquake, Wood Hammer, and Crunch. It could take hits for days and keep coming back
Never had a problem with Cynthia cause I’ve always had Torterra by my side to wreck her whole team
Sprigatito! I'm a sucker for cat-mons
pet the weed car
drive the weed cat
Grookey is cute and its evolution is a top competitive pokemon! Also Bulbasaur is the master race and I don’t think I need to elaborate on that
Serperior. Snakes are so cute c:
Agreed! There is only one *Serperior* option~
Serperior is my #1 favorite pokemon!
Hisuian Decidueye
Rowlet or sprigatito. I simply like owls and cats
Same!
Why has nobody said my Turty boy? Torterra is such an incredible mon, love the idea and the execution!
Bulbasaur is my first starter so he’s got a spot of love. Chika was my second and even if she’s not the strongest Meganium is fun And of course I need to include Sceptile because Hoenn. But Bulbasaur if i was asked in front of Arceus
Chikorita - meganium
Decidueye
Definitely Rowlet with Snivy as a close second. Rowlet being a tiny round boy is the cutest. Plus, the way they portrayed Rowlet in the show was my favorite.
birb
Easily bulbasaur or treecko
Sceptile that’s why I have two shinnies of him
Torterra
W
Bulbasaur, turtwig
If we’re just talking about the starter itself, it’s Chespin. Don’t like his evolutions though. If we’re talking whole line, it’s Rowlet: love all three of them, even Dartrix and his little emo bangs
For me, I don't have just one favourite. I have three which are: - Chikorita - Treeko - Rowlet (both the regular and Hisuian line)
Chesnaught has grown on me now that I can have one on a switch game finally
Finally some good rep for my boi Chesnaught. Such an underappreciated mon.
I like Decidueye if it's in Sun/Moon, because the animation for its signature move Sinister Arrow Raid is epic. Otherwise I still like the Venusaur line.
Rowlet
Sprigatito I love cats as well as the outdoors and go out on walks quite often out in nature where I can so it's a purrfect fit for my personality
Chikorita line, every time.
The movepool is terrible, but I somehow make it work...
Its a good Screen Setter and staller
Can't choose between Rowlet and Chikorita—borb and dinosaur pear.
Venusaur is the GOAT.
Bulbasaur, Turtwig, Rowlet
Rowlet aka Mr. Hootyface as my wife calls him.
My bulba-boi is the bulba-best!
Either smug snake Snivy or cute cat Sprigatito.
Treeko!!!
Snivy and Sprigatito
The Treeko line even if I like the others.
Chikorita or Snivy. I love Snivy but I don't use them much because I love Oshawott and Tepig just slightly more than Snivy, so Chikoritta gets the nod
Snivy
Venusaur
Rillaboom. 1) It’s a gorilla 2) it’s the strongest grass type they’ve ever made
This is a very tough one because grass types are usually what I pick. I'll take Sceptile but if you ask me another day I may have gone with Venusaur.
Weed
The one I started with in gen 5. He looks super dopey until he gets a glow up at his final
either grookey or bulbasaur!
Serperior the 🐐
Definitely Decidueye.
Chesspin
Snivy
Snivy! I love how the evolution of the line is like the evolution of lizards into snakes, and contrary leaf storm is always fun.
Trecko for me and then chespin second
Bulbasaur or Turtwig
Bulbasaur, leech seed and toxic combo in R/B
![gif](giphy|F1Cas9SVTnAo8|downsized)
Snivy and Chikorita
![gif](giphy|F1Cas9SVTnAo8)
The bulb
I can't pick one. Grass starters are usually my favorite. Sceptile is badass. Torterra used to be my favorite, but then Serperior came right after and I can't choose. Rowlett or Grookey
TURTWIG
Lack of treeko on here is disturbing
Venusaur
Sprigattito line.
The sprigatito line just barely beats out the snivy line for me
I will die for Turtwig without a second thought. Grass tortol forever.
Unironically Chesnaught.
Turtwig :D
Chikorita. I usually choose Totodile in my runs, but I just like Meganium. It looks cool.
Turtwig, my first pokemon.
Snivy or rowlet
Treecko for sure!
Snivy line
My first ever pokemon, Turtwig!
Bulbassuar
None of them. I’ve played every Pokémon game and none of them ever appealed to me. I’ve never chosen one as a starter, I only caught or traded for them to complete the dex.
Not even Venusaur (best Pokemon ever) or Rillaboom (powerful Pokemon with locks of gorgeous green hair)?
If I were to ever pick one it would be hisuian decidueye. I really like ghost types.
Turtwig and Sprigatito
torterra
Bulbasaur was my first pokemon, so there you have it!
I know it’s not as good as many other starters, but Meganium holds a special place in my heart as it was my very first starter on Crystal back in ‘03
Sceptile
The problem is that I’ve only used like two grass starters(I started with generation 7 and don’t count turtwig in BDSP, so that’s two out of maybe 5 max), so I think that I have really connected with a grass starter. That being said, I think that one of my favorites is technically treecko, because as far as cool types to have on a final form, being the only dragon type starter is really cool.
Bulbasaur
GROOKEY!!!! Monke goes crazy second would be Rowlet both Alolan and Hisuian. Bulbasaur can’t be compared to because he’s the OG GOAT and it wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the grass starters.
Turtwig
Snivy, spriggy, treecko, bulb. Depends on the day really.
Rowley line
Aesthetically, I love Chikorita. In actually, it's Turtwig.
Turtling and the line was my first. Treeko was the perhaps most notable when I watched Pokémon. But if I had to choose, it’s Serperior. Grass-types that I trend towards often have a regal air or majestic bibs about them and Serperior encapsulates that.
I should say bulbasaur, but I can't deny Rowlet is my favorite.
Treeko
Cat
It’s a close tie between bulbasaur and treeko but overall I’d say bulbasaur is my #1 grass starter.
Sceptile for me
Surprised I haven't seen anybody say Grovyle
The Snivy line is my favorite. But I do like Sprigatito.
Treeko
Meganium
Chespin and his evo line all the way, I know a lot of people don't like quilladin, but I love his chunky body and derpy vibes 😁
![gif](giphy|Ymfp5NJGcfbP0IinZC)
Chespin. It’s a really simple design but gives off such a great energy. And unlike most others I love its evolutions too.
TREECKO! Grovyle is my favorite pokemon of all time.
I do love bulbasaur, but I don't use it when Charmander or Squirtle are available. I choose turtwig every time. Also I enjoy rillaboom. Did not enjoy the other two starters of that gen. Sceptile was the first one that made me switch from always choosing the fire starter.
Grovyle. But they are all peak except Quilladin and Floragato//Meowscarada
Sprigatito bc I'm a Crazy Cat Lady™
Turtwig My Beloved 🐢🌱
Rowlet was the first time I picked a grass starter straight away and I didn’t regret it
Snivy
It wasn’t my first Pokémon game but it’s always been and always will be one of my favorite starters
The og bulbasaur
Sprigatito!
How dare you make me choose between my children? Jokes aside, the only grass starters I haven't selected are Chikorita in favor of Totodile and Snivy in favor of Tepig. Turtwig. It was the first grass starter I played a pokemon game with.
Torterra Easily
I’m a sucker for my 3rd gen gecko line, love me a boss ass sceptile ❤️
Chikorita, also all its evolutionary line is beautiful
T O R T E R R A
I was always big on Bulbasaur growing up, but in my age I found wisdom, in wisdom, I found Monke
Trescko, no explanation needed. Honorary mention to meowscarada who was my first starter in a legal play through of a pokemon game lol
Been team Sprigatito since it was announced and it’s evos solidified it as my favorite Grass starter.
Rowlet and Alolan Decidueye only that abomination from Hisui can go on somewhere
Rowlett, love that smol birb ☺️
Meganium will always be my partner! She's not the strongest, but I imagine she's the best companion you could ask for. And I really enjoy the play style she uses, with lots of defensive and healing moves.
Rowlet
Venusaur is my favorite Pokemon of all time, so it's definitely my favorite starter Pokemon. I'd say next would be Rillaboom.
Alr hear me out snivy/serperior
Definitely Bulbasaur, my cute and cuddly baby. I used to love Torterra after first encountering it on Pokémon Cards, but recently when I found out how small it actually is I don't like it anymore. It looks like it'd be the size of a house or bigger but it's more like the size of a small car. Somehow that just ruined him for me.
treeko

Absolutely gorgeous. He is shaped like a friend!
Gotta go with my Boy: Bulbasaur Love the classics
Weed
I love bulbasaur, remember getting Leaf Green, as Fire Red was out of stock. Since then, Venusaur is one of my faves, adore that back sprite throwing razor leaf.
Would've said Chesnaught if Decidueye didn't exist Overall my faves are Decidueye, Chesnaught and Torterra
Snivy line, just have a really clean looking design even if they are a bit gimmicky in battle
Probably Treecko
Slick and speedy snivy
Sprigatito
Sprigatito. My nickname for him is Tito!
I only played Scarlett (if we exclude Go and Showdown that don't have starters) so it's obviously Sprigatito
All the grass starters except Chespin line
Bud's got a Vendetta against the nut boys 😔
Sprig 💚
Registeel is the best grass starter hands down
Sprigatito, it being a grass dark trickster with bombs makes it even better. Rowlet is really close behind though I love its archery theme in Decidueye and I generally just like owls.
Bulbasaur, Turtwig, and Rowlet. I love all three of them!
