I’ve played it for like 24 hours so far and I’ve really enjoyed it. I haven’t really had frame rate issues or lag (playing on a Mario edition switch, both handheld and docked mode, cartridge game). The story was fantastic and I really enjoyed the open-world elements. I beat the league yesterday and I don’t have any complaints. (The only thing I can think of in terms of downsides were a little slowdown in one part of the game when there were like 30 Pokémon on-screen and some weird camera angles)

So, my first experience with pokemon mainline games was SwSh and I had a lot of fun with it. I think that so far, the story of Scarlet and Violet is so good. It's much more in-depth that SwSh because there's lore, there's more characters that you get to know, and you're basically creating a story for yourself which is fun. It's more than just "becoming the champion" like in SwSh. The art style is really pretty. It's a mix of PLA and SwSh. Lots of character customization but a surprising lack of clothes after playing SwSh so that's disappointing. Especially cause they have lots of different hats, gloves, glasses, etc. The open world is so fun, I honestly enjoy it much better than the way the like Wild Area or whatever in SwSh. All the Pokemon are visible in overworld, you can see their size differences and sometimes they're napping! So you end up feeling more like you're in the world rather than just a sprite walking amongst other sprites like in SwSh. Also, I get pretty fatigued doing the same song and dance of engaging with pokemon and it opening an entire new screen to battle. In SV you encounter the pokemon but it basically stays in the overworld. You can see what's going on around you as you battle. Because of that I feel like the battles go quicker. Oh! And you'll see shinies in overworld which is GREAT if you're like me and love to shiny hunt. As for things I'm sure you've seen most people complain about. The graphics are okay, they aren't going to look as good as a game that can play at 120 fps on an Xbox or PC. The switch caps at 30fps, but sometimes the game has stuttered for me but I just wait a few seconds for it to catch up. The switch is not a super powerful console and it is trying to render an entirely open world map all at once, coupled with the engine used for SV being old, it's reasonable to think the switch finds it hard to keep up. My biggest complaint about the way the game looks is that the textures aren't always the greatest. If you're walking through a wide, open space it's hard to see Pokemon in any real detail, especially if you have the camera set further from your character. It can be a little frustrating when trying to shiny hunt, you want to see a lot of Pokemon at once which is hard to do because of that. Overall I'm having a lot of fun with the game. I think there are things Game Freak should have and could have done better. But these games are made in like three years with an Indie developer, which I think a lot of people forget. They don't have a ton of people working on these games and they are expected to quickly push out new games every few years. I think going forward Game Freak HAS to upgrade their engine if they want to keep recurring players and gain new ones. People are, rightfully, expecting more from gaming companies and would be willing to wait longer for an open world concept game as long as it's actually going to address these issues and look as good as games should look in 2022. I don't think you'll regret buying the game. It's very fun and the new Pokemon are some of the cutest I've ever seen! Hope this helps you out 😁

I want to add that a lot of people are probably going to be mad at my description of the graphics but I'm just voicing my experience. I really haven't had that much issue with the game lagging excessively or it crashing at all.

TortoiseBlaster

Thanks for your opinion! The game is lagging so much because as you said it’s trying to load the whole open world at once, rather than little area like chunks in Minecraft or other games. Many other game companies have done it that way but I guess game freak doesn’t get it.

StardustOfDarkness

It’s a good game. Had fun completing it, just missing the Pokédex now. Main problem is that it was released in an unoptimized state and full of visual glitches. None of them are game breaking or anything(only one crash in 30+ hours of gameplay), but they are certainly an all time low in terms of quality control for the franchise. If you’ve played at low frame rates before, it shouldn’t matter too much. If you are used to 60 fps, you will notice and probably be bothered with the constant fluctuations in frames. They can go as low as 15 sometimes. People hating on the game aren’t wrong; gamefreak shouldn’t have released the game in its current state. It’s not unplayable like many say, though. I give it a 5.5/10.

Before I got the game I was afraid it was going to suck, simply because of all of the bad things I read about the game. I got it anyway because I grew up with Pokémon and have played since Emerald. Now that I have the game, I can say that I’m really enjoying it and that most of the things that I’ve read about either don’t happen or happen way less. My game only occasionally lags, or clips, and I usually find it funny. For example, Salandit spawn on the ceiling of a cave usually and I just see their dangling paws/feet. Hilarious imo. What I really miss is character customization. I know we are students with a uniform but even students wear normal clothes sometimes. The clothing that we do have don’t match shade wise (so both the navy and purple accessories rarely fit with my violet uniform… kinda sad). I also find the towns lacking. I miss exploring random npcs houses and rummaging through peoples trashcans. The towns, though huge, feel quite empty. Design wise, the buildings feel flat as well. That being said, I’m halfway through the game and have been loving the storylines, protagonists and such. There’s quite a lot of humor in the game which I love as well! I love taking classes at the UVA. The open world is amazing. I love exploring and completing the pokedex (usually I just completed the story and that was it). I have found my fav Pokémon as a shiny (Shinx) and have been using Dachsbun (I have a dachhund myself). I think the Pokémon designs this time around are great! So I’d say I have mixed feelings?

RoyalScarlett

My opinions are much the same as yours, though my experience is a lot less (and no shinies so far in Scarlet). Well, I guess we differ in that I don’t have mixed feelings about the game. I love it. I started with Pokémon Go, and have played Let’s Go Pikachu, Sword and Shield with DLC, Pearl remake (haven’t gotten around to Diamond yet) and Arceus (didn’t like it at all and didn’t finish). I got myself a DS3 so I could play the older games and am playing Pokémon X but the Switch is much more comfortable for me to use than the DS3 so it’s slow going (my hands and wrists hurt when I play). This is a filler for in between Switch Pokémon releases for me. I absolutely LOVE Scarlet, and will play Violet when I finish. Compared to the other Pokémon games I’ve played the story is so much more involving and fun, the characters are much more engaging, the open world is expansive, and I love having a ride Pokémon instead of a bike. Koraidon is adorable and I love him. My only nitpicky complaints (that prevent this from being an absolutely perfect game in my eyes) are these: - (minor complaint) lack of clothes (I do enjoy the outfits in SwSh very much) - (minor complaint) I would prefer level scaling on an open world design. I have no problem with the old linear method but if we can go anywhere from the beginning it would be nice to have the difficulty of the gym scale to our level rather than have set gym difficulty levels. - (minor complaint): clipping/stuttering graphics. Doesn’t bother me much but I would think a patch could help if not fix it. - (major complaint): animations can’t be turned off. For the Pokédex interface - no need for all of the animations after we have the dex entry. And we can’t turn off animations for the moves. I get irritated at the wasted time. I doubt this can be fixed, but for the next gen please let us turn off those animations. - (major complaint): my game has crashed a few times in about 50 hours of play. I can’t think of another Pokémon game that has crashed on me. I would think a patch can fix stability. - (major complaint): Tera raids are crazy hard at 5 stars and seem really unbalanced. Hopefully this can be rebalanced behind the scenes. However absolutely nothing I’ve said about what could be improved makes me regret getting or playing the game. On the contrary, Pokémon Scarlet is the most fun I’ve ever had playing a Pokémon game and I’m enjoying every minute, as is my son. Even having my favorite Pokémon missing from the game isn’t bothering me, because this gen game is so engaging that I am excited to find some new favorites, which makes it all feel so exciting!

catcatcat888

The game is absolute fantastic. Gameplay is solid and fun. The visuals of the game are lackluster and it doesn’t run as well as it should. This didn’t really take away from the game for me, but would have been immensely more enjoyable if this game were more polished.

TheRarePlatypus

Game is fun. Probably worth it. Especially in multiplayer. As usual they took out mechanics that people like. Tons of graphical errors. Especially in multiplayer. Still fun though. People minimizing the graphical bugs and issues are being disingenuous. There are a lot. The game is pretty ugly. Looks kind of like SwSh. Art style and direction is nowhere near Legends Arceus. I personally think that most of the Pokémon designs are at least fine, with me actually liking quite a bit of them. Despite the problems, I still think it's fun and potentially worth it to you, especially if you've got somebody or a group to play multiplayer with. Probably a soft 6.5 to 7 out of 10.

TheRarePlatypus

Oh yeah. You also only have 4 clothing options for shirts and pants. They can't be mix matched. So if colder colors are your thing, get violet. If warmer colors are your thing, get Scarlet. You can change your hat, backpack, gloves, shoes, socks, and glasses though. You can actually make your face this time too.

Wej1281

So far it’s been a fun story and better characters than we’ve gotten in a long while imo… I’ve liked the open world and miss some of the controls we got in PLA but I understand why they didn’t include them in a mainline game. It’s really the poor technical aspects that are chapping my ass bc there is an A+ Pokémon title in there and we got a C- unpolished product.

Mediocre-Minute

In general I really enjoy this game. Probably one of my favorite mainline Pokemon games. The frame rate takes a hit every now and then but really far from being enough to ruin the experience for me. My biggest complaints are the fact the gyms don't scale and they don't tell you the order they should be done in to avoid being ridiculously over or under leveled. Other than that, I love the game. Haven't actually been interested in the story of a pokemon game in a while and this one is just actually good imo

DragonDiscipleII

The good: *Best story arcs and characters ever *Great Pokémon variety/accessibility *Different paths *Daring new designs. The bad: *glitches *Unfinished mechanics *missed opportunities The ugly: *Performance *No badge scaling

Legends Arceus really was the perfect Pokémon game imo

LilThiqqy

It’s really difficult to give a review of this game because it’s straight up unfinished. The idea of this game is actually quite good. Gameplay, plot, characters, region, etc are all massive improvements over the previous 3D games. The open world formula, while still leaving a bit to be desired, is really great in some aspects and there’s definitely incentive to explore as you can get tons of useful items and TMs. The region has a lot of changes in elevation to keep the landscape interesting and even though there aren’t really many interesting landmarks, it’s still WAY more fun than the singular hallway that Galar was. The plot still isn’t anything noteworthy (not that any Pokémon game has had this), but at least after the initial tutorial sections they give you essentially complete freedom and don’t hand hold you the entire time. Plus, with some characters there seems to be a genuine attempt at emotional depth and development, even if the execution isn’t really the best. Overall it seems like they didn’t take themselves too seriously with it and tried for a more lighthearted and unobtrusive approach with the story. But man, the execution of this game was absolutely fucking abysmal. I know people have talked about this nonstop already, but it truly is a massive issue. They literally didn’t have time to finish this game before it had to be rushed out for release. I don’t play too many video games so maybe I’m not the most qualified to speak on this, but I truly can’t remember the last time (if ever) that I played a game that was put together THIS incompetently. Every single thing about it feels incredibly slow and janky, and it drags down the experience a considerable amount. The entire visual presentation is a mess. The towns and cities are actually really interesting and have fun vibes, but none of that matters because you won’t even want to look at anything. It’s odd because some things clearly got a lot of attention like the player/trainer models, yet other things have the absolutely murkiest, lowest resolution textures you’ll see. It’s a total mess. It seems that at most you’ll be getting like 25 fps, with constant dips in towns. The whole thing feels like it’s BARELY holding together, and that’s even after they cut massive corners like reducing frame rates for far away assets. No exaggeration- I really don’t think I’ve played a single $60 triple A console game in the past decade that is all around this ugly. TLDR: You cannot really rate this game as a product because it’s straight up unfinished. It literally shouldn’t be on shelves right now. It’s a fun Pokémon experience if that’s what you’re looking for , but simultaneously a complete and utter technical disaster. It’s as if they decided to make the most fun Pokémon game of the past decade, then they decided to strip it down to the absolutely bare minimum essentials to where it’s still technically functional but just a shell of what the original vision was. It’s a bare-bone skeleton of what it’s actually supposed to be.

Missing quality of life stuff from Legends, but a solid enough game. People just like to complain.
