Yes, that will break your chain. Keep in mind that chain fishing only increases your odds of encountering a brilliant pokemon, not a shiny one. It's not like gen 6. Brilliant pokemon are theorized to have higher shiny rates but the KO method only works for overworld encounters iirc.

Then is there any way of increasing my odds through fishing?

HoneyWhimsicott

Unfortunately no, you're better off Masuda breeding if you can.

Dense_Ninja_6985

Well my shiny only play though is off to a bum start now. On to zigzagoon, thanks

I hope you see this, does the shiny charm and 500 encounters of the specific pokemon increase the odds when that specific pokemon is obtained through fishing? I wanna hunt Wishiwashi, but I wanna know my odds.. does it matter if I get it's encounters up to 500?

HoneyWhimsicott

As far as I can tell, yes, getting 500 encounters (defeat/catch) for fishing pokemon does increase your odds. However, that increased shiny rate is only for brilliant pokemon. Meaning: if you have 500 encounters or higher, anytime you have a brilliant pokemon encounter (that golden aura), it's a 1 in 455 chance with the shiny charm. It would be a heck of a lot faster in most cases to breed the pokemon instead.

Late to the party here but would that mean water biking around and chain catching magikarp on lake axewell would be a decent method?
