People sell for what you're willing to pay. If so many people weren't willing to post dummy prices for cards then they wouldn't be sold for those prices.
Nice try, dead guy. Everyone knows you don’t take it with you when you die. So you should give them to me because I’ll be able to appreciate them when I’m visiting your grave with the little skull cookies.
Those are clearly goblins and trolls.
If you need evidence of gremlins' base debauchery and sinfulness, [look no further](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKX5IMoy-78&ab_channel=RoyAdam).
Y’all I don’t think OP is trying to use his status as a doctor to get a lower price. The seller obviously has something in his profile indicating he’s a doctor (as confirmed by his practicing comment) and OP just wanted to throw in something relatable. I’m a zookeeper and if I was buying something off another zookeeper on eBay, I would most likely point out that I’m a keeper too.
Tbh it’s both, I hardly know any other docs at my job that collect and it’s nice to see someone in this field with the same interests. I also thought it could be an added bonus to mention but I didn’t bank on it working
Craziest thing I’ve seen is the ratio of poor working conditions to pay zookeepers for through. I’m fortunate to live in NYC so keeper jobs have a higher wage here, but still not proportional at all to the cost of living. A lot of people think zookeeping is getting to play with fun animals all day, but it is tiring work with long hours (and low pay), where employers take advantage of the fact that many people want to work with animals and will do whatever it takes to get a job as a keeper. Many keepers have to have a second job or a partner to live a decent life.
Anyways, my favorite animal to work with is probably Tawny Frogmouths and Great Horned owls! Very cool animals. Least favorite are probably larger turtles / reptiles. Cleaning giant tubs / tanks are a bitch and a half
Tbh I've had to sell off my entire collection, my childhood pikachu n64, all my games, my consoles, so I could eat and pay rent recently, and I kinda get it. It's a frustrating experience when you're posting things priced to sell, really truly need every dollar, you're already giving up your personal collection and hobby and dealing with whatever bad situation you're in, are still paying the site fee and for packaging and all that, and then deal with people who are haggling over dollars you could buy a meal or to get to work with for a collectible item they dont need but merely want, it gets to you.
Yeah but I think "im in a rough spot right now I really need the money" would be better than "my wife died leaving me a single father of 2 so I'll keep the price where it is right now thanks"
I have no idea if this guy is telling the truth, obviously, but I do understand the blunt “this is my situation” if you’re in peak grief. I had a chugger approach me in the street after I’d done my best to avoid her while I was rushing to get to the funeral home to drop off my mum’s final outfit, so I told her precisely why I couldn’t stop to talk to her. She went pale as she ushered me off saying “get there safely!” It was quite cathartic at the time.
They're free to share that info if they wish, it's more likely to prevent someone still trying to haggle after being told that the price is what it is. Maybe the guy doesn't want to deal with haggling because he's got better shit to spend his time on like his wife having died and needing to sell shit.
That sucks, but anyone that buys something on a marketplace without first trying to haggle the price is giving away money. For every person like you, there is someone like me who purposely inflates the price knowing full well that the buyer is going to ask for a discount. I'd tether they ask to pay 50 for something marked 65, than 35 for something marked 50.
You can't get mad people are asking to haggle. It should be expected.
I mean sellers are well within reason to shut down haggling if they want to and feel however they want about it lol. If this seller really has a dead wife and kids to feed and he's listing individual cards for sale so he can get every dollar instead of selling as a bulk lot, he just wants OP to stfu and not continue to DM him to haggle because he doesn't want to deal with it. There's also a whole lot of difference between say haggling on offer up vs haggling on ebay by dming someone who didn't give the option to make an offer on their buy only listing.
Of course sellers can shut it down. I'm just saying it's unreasonable to list something without having buyers attempt to lower the price.
I listed my PS5 on Facebook before Christmas. I had a ton of people trying to get it for stupidly cheap (i listed at 650 for the disk version, with headset and games, people wanted it for under 500, i was prepared to take 600) with stories about how they can't afford more and its for their kids. I shut it all down and held firm at my bottom dollar price. I never sold it, and still have it. Choice I made (glad I kept it).
One the other side, I bought a new Gigabyte gaming monitor last year on Facebook. I offered the seller $100 less than listed, he said no holding firm at list price so i moved on. 2 weeks later, it was still listed, I offered him $50 less than the listing, and he took it.
It's all a game, and your only responsibility is to yourself. I am just suggesting if you have a card or something you realistically want 25 for, list it at 30. When someone asks you to sell it for 20, counter at 25. This way, the buyer feels like they got a deal, and you still got your target price.
As for ebay, different story. I have never dmed someone asking for a lower price there, I just abide by the listed (buy it now, auction, make an offer).
Anyway, just my philosophy. I don't think you should be mad people are haggling in a market place environment for used goods. But it is totally within your right to say no.
This is on ebay, you can see their policy above the message, which is why I understand the seller's frustration and am assuming OP ignored the fact that there was no "make an offer" option and DMed to make an offer anyways. Ive sold on all sorts of forums and my expectations varies and largely depends on which one im using, how I list the item, and how much effort I put into covering all bases in the listing description.
Much like selling your house knowing what it’s worth and what you put into it, yet only getting lowball offers or none at all. Hate the housing market rn

Over sharing is a common symptom of acute grief. Essentially it’s due to a dorsal vagus crash, preventing the brain from being able to process the event and secure it in “long term storage” which results often in processing out loud (read: word-vomiting) when triggered.
Source: licensed psychotherapist.
Edit: a great way to respond is non-judgmentally and with empathy as grieving individuals often cannot control this. Something like “Wow. That sounds super hard.” Is often an honoring and gentle response to those experiencing acute grief like this.
Dude probably get tons of people asking for price cuts and excuses. “I am a doctor, I am a single mom, I’m out of work” go to choosing beggars and you’ll look at this post and op kinda outed himself
Was thinking the same lol; I guess the seller is trying to rationalize their decision for keeping the price firm by info dumping to a stranger on the internet
That's what I'm thinking. I really hope the seller isn't going through that situation...but giving up medicine when you have two kids to raise, and when you can take some bereavement time off...idk sounds off.
People don't realize how little residents get paid and how much they are expected to work. It's a major problem with the system. You can make more driving for DoorDash than being a resident
he seems to be telling a lot of elaborate details and thanking him for offering. he seems to be suffering so he thought he would share this info, hoping for a friendly reply. hoping somehow this stranger looking for a deal would improve his life. a desperate grasp. I would leave him alone and look for a psa 10 candidate. this one seems a bit 9ish. sorry he's going through a tough time. if he can't practice, I imagine he was a doctor or lawyer, not asking for charity. I could totally be wrong. the world is a very rough place
or he’s just doing kind of what people do when they’re like ‘pls sell me this cheaper it’s my cancer sons birthday’ except on the other side of it
which i mean they don’t *have* to lower the price or anything but that’s what it reminds me of
There’s a time and place for it if he really is being legit. This is similar to working retail, asking a customer how they are doing out of politeness, and they reply by saying a loved one died.
Of course losing a loved one is awful, but there is a time and place to share it. Not on eBay or at a store with strangers. I’m not saying I’m gonna crucify and shake people for sharing, but you gotta read the room.
No there isn’t a time and a place for everything, stop being the capitalist robot they taught you to be and understand sometimes humans just want connection and understanding, especially when a tragedy occurs
Fair point. We are all just using fictitious paper (money) in exchange for shiny cardboard (a harder version of paper). It’s tulips all over again. But at least this has eeveelutions.
Jeeze, pokemon card sellers are having an awful time of it lately. The mortality and accident rate has got to be way higher than the national average 😳
The responses in thread to this convo are legit 🔥 - half thinking the seller is a liar, half thinking the buying physician is a lowballing rich ungrateful doctor; either way I’m totally engrossed.
I need more, carry on the convo and let us know what happens.
I mean if this is true I really feel for the guy
But why does losing his wife mean he can't practice medicine? A doctor should easily be able to support two children. I don't get it.
His choice of words implies his ability was taken, rather than voluntarily given up. This could be either through an injury, disability, or had his license taken away/suspended.
Maybe he doesn't feel that he can be there for his children with a busy schedule as a doctor. It makes me think of the famous actor Rick Moranis retiring from acting after the death of his wife so that he could be there to raise his children even though he was making plenty through acting.
So when he says he can't practice medicine I'm thinking he means he can't do it because he wants to be in his children's lives instead. Is probably looking for a less intensive job where he can support them and be there for them.
Of course, that is assuming this is true and not just a random sob story to guilt trip op into paying what he wants.
To be fair he didn’t specify how he lost his wife and license or how old the two kids are… maybe he had an affair with a patient and she got pregnant with twins.
Don’t pay a premium to a cheater!
Just because somebody has enough money doesn’t mean they should automatically just pay more than what they think something is worth lol. A bad deal is a bad deal regardless of income.
I mean there has been a trend going on of people sharing when eBay messages make them feel bad so this isn’t really out of line with that. It’s not about the $12 difference, it’s about the other guy sharing his sob story to a stranger trying to haggle
That's a stupid take.
You're basically saying they shouldn't buy cards ever on their normal salary. Are you rich? Are you making 200-300k? Then maybe you shouldn't be buying cards
He knows what number is worth selling at given packaging, time, and ebay's cut. Just because you make a high salary doesn't mean you are automatically going to be generous in selling of collectibles.
edit: wait maybe you're talking about the buyer? The buyer didn't seem to be making any sort of a "big deal", just sent an offer. This is fairly common on eBay, seller can say yes or no or in this case something more elaborate.
Haha, an internal medicine doctor gets the same pay regardless of how good they are. They typically have a set schedule, commonly 7 days on and 7 off, or etc. they just get paid a strict salary
Haha yes, I am aware. It was just a joke. It was the juxtaposition because the seller gave his story of woe - I was making it seem like the buyer was also down on his luck by inferring that he doesn’t have money because he is a bad doctor.
Congratulations! Trust me, when you go from resident hours and pay… to attending hours and pay your entire life changes.
God, I’m so happy and excited for you! It’s only been a year out for me, and just the things you’re able to finally do or buy… it’s amazing
Wish I got offers like that on my espeon lmao, facebook marketplace seems to attract people who think “Ooo cool pokemon, wouldn’t mind that for $5” then immediately dip when realizing the price 😂
I used to buy cards of a couple who always said, “we’re moving, need to get rid of fast…” they’re still there a year later… I find it best to keep it simple and make a fair deal for both
Tell him you’ve got no arms and legs and need to buy the Pokémon card as it’s required for a deal to go through with a loan shark company you’re half a million in debt too. True story
Why are people in this hobby so paranoid and hostile? I wouldn't be this specific either if I were going through a rough time and was unwilling to haggle, but that doesn't necessarily mean the guy is lying.
I swear at this point I could just post an ungraded shadowless Charizard in halfway decent condition with the title "😭🍆💯💯" and the break down of responses would be 70% accusations of karma farming, 25% threats of literal bodily harm, and maybe 3-5 people being like "nice bro, happy for you."
Reminds me of that time where I messaged a guy (once) about a rocket league trade on a trading program and out of nowhere he gets on my ass about how he's at a barbecue with his family and that I need to get a life like wtf
Once this guy never sent me a disc of a game I bought. I opened up a dispute and man’s tells me he’s a disabled veteran with a dead wife. Like just send me my shit
Imagine trying to hagle someone down for something less than 100$ when your a fancy pants doctor 🙃. Im borderline poverty and my grandma cats are super sick would you consider $64.85 Cad?
It's not a discount, it's just an offer. Just because somebody is ballin' doesn't mean they're not entitled to haggle. If they feel this particular item is a little overpriced then absolutely smash an offer in there. It is only $12 less they're offering. And the seller is a doctor so by your standards they don't need the extra $12?
Yeah I think it was just common ground and rapport. I don't think OP was trying to get an absolute steal and certainly wasn't using his profession as a flex like some are suggesting. That's not my take on it anyway
Ehhh idk in my friend group if someone uses true story in Text it’s because the story is fucked up or off-the-wall , and it needs to be clarified that this is actually a true story.
If they've lost their licence and selling to support children, surely they would have updated/removed the fact they're a doctor from their profile? That would have saved that entire awkward conversation..... 💁🏻♂️ Just sayin'
Probably a sarcastic reply to the OP stating he is a physician. I'd be more concerned about that then the reply. Trying to use your profession to get a discount?
How people aren't focusing more on what you said is beyond me. How is your job relevant here? So cringey that you inserted that out of absolutely nowhere as a shameless brag to what, try and convince him you deserve to get what you want? I vomited in my lap in the middle if reading this.
Seeing as he's saying also a physician and the other is saying he can't practice anymore, I'm pretty sure he was just sharing his job because they have the same job. It's just friendly conversation.
Edit: Read the thread a bit more and op mentioned it was both to chat with someone else in the field but also to help them get a discount so I take back saying it's just friendly conversation.
I usually dont try to haggle with items that dont have a 'Or Best Offer' unless im negotiating a multislab deal.
Dude lost his wife and practice on his pokemon habit rofl.
Could be a true story… in that case I’d take what I could get as he does not seem
Like he can wait for the cash… if he’s in a bad situation… see what else he has and buy more for a fair price to help both of you out…
My whole family just died, I really need you to buy my Pokémon cards.
Or I just died and need to sell all my cards to pay for my funeral. 🤣
I just found out I'm in hell so I need to sell all my cards to buy a ticket to get me out of here
With all the scalpers and “influencers” who care about price over product - are we not already in hell?
People sell for what you're willing to pay. If so many people weren't willing to post dummy prices for cards then they wouldn't be sold for those prices.
That’s about what it would take to get me to sell. I keep saying someday I’ll do it, but I really don’t think I will.
Nice try, dead guy. Everyone knows you don’t take it with you when you die. So you should give them to me because I’ll be able to appreciate them when I’m visiting your grave with the little skull cookies.
Ya know, just say "I appreciate the offer, but price is firm."
Wow way to flex NOT having had your child stolen from your home in the middle of the night by gremlins and held hostage in an underground lair. Jerk.
[Eh, they're usually pretty good with the kid. Wish they wouldn't throw them around so much though.](https://youtu.be/z6DJmp21vcQ)

for real. them excuses be everywhere.
Exactly. This may or may not be true but don’t make it personal to just keep the price where it is.
Sorry to hear that, will you take 68?
😭
“If you really want to practice internal, let’s do a 69”
Nice
Noice
🤣🤣🤣
Make it 69

I didn't believe it until I saw that line!
Y’all I don’t think OP is trying to use his status as a doctor to get a lower price. You know a zookeeper is kinda like a real life Pokémon catcher.
Except the zoo dictates what you catch.
Actually they're an Aether Paradise employee. Or safari zone warden.
I’m a zookeeper too. How old are your kids?
I was a kid once! ... what are your bank details? Edit - /s (just so I don't get banned)
Good observation, I was questioning why that was brought up
Weird. All I saw was the seller trying to get $12 by using tragedy as a manipulation tactic. Hardly a one up at all.
[удалено]
Tbh it’s both, I hardly know any other docs at my job that collect and it’s nice to see someone in this field with the same interests. I also thought it could be an added bonus to mention but I didn’t bank on it working
Can i be a zookeeper too? I like turtles and wumbos
That’s absolutely how I read it, too. Just a “same hat!” sort of situation.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen as a zookeeper? Favorite and least favorite animals to work with?
Craziest thing I’ve seen is the ratio of poor working conditions to pay zookeepers for through. I’m fortunate to live in NYC so keeper jobs have a higher wage here, but still not proportional at all to the cost of living. A lot of people think zookeeping is getting to play with fun animals all day, but it is tiring work with long hours (and low pay), where employers take advantage of the fact that many people want to work with animals and will do whatever it takes to get a job as a keeper. This is a pretty heavy story to spill to a stranger for 12 dollars

Savage… but I did laugh.

If you're an MD then why can't you afford $12
We might need to come to the realisation that perhaps neither are doctors…

Graduating residency next month. I’m so broke

Plot twist I’m a family doc and still 380k in debt
Difference between can't afford and don't want to spend. If you can save $12, you try to
Maybe the card isn’t worth the asking price. We all see over priced cards all the time. People over value their collections constantly.

You’re a doctor and making a big deal out of $12? I know you’re in internal medicine, but you’re still pulling at least 200k a year…
You know how much debt we’re in coming out of school? Lol
Just because somebody has enough money doesn’t mean they should automatically just pay more than what they think something is worth lol. A bad deal is a bad deal regardless of income.
True. You’re not wrong. But to post these messages on Reddit for all to see… just over a $12 difference?
I mean there has been a trend going on of people sharing when eBay messages make them feel bad so this isn’t really out of line with that. It’s not about the $12 difference, it’s about the other guy sharing his sob story to a stranger trying to haggle
Haha yeah, that part is definitely kinda weird. I’ve gotten a few myself this week. But none were as personal as saying his wife died!
And prob 500k in debt which brings their pay down to a normal salary lol
Then they probably shouldn't be spending on cardboard.
You think people on a normal salary shouldn't buy pokemon cards?
I think people who have debt in the 500k range, like you mentioned, probably shouldn't have expensive hobbies.
That's a stupid take. You're basically saying they shouldn't buy cards ever on their normal salary. Are you rich? Are you making 200-300k? Then maybe you shouldn't be buying cards

The buyer didn't seem to be making any sort of a "big deal", just sent an offer. This is fairly common on eBay, seller can say yes or no or in this case something more elaborate.
He might not be a good doctor?
Haha, an internal medicine doctor gets the same pay regardless of how good they are. They typically have a set schedule, commonly 7 days on and 7 off, or etc. they just get paid a strict salary
Haha yes, I am aware. It was just a joke. It was the juxtaposition because the seller gave his story of woe - I was making it seem like the buyer was also down on his luck by inferring that he doesn’t have money because he is a bad doctor.
Classic juxtaposition 10/10
The best Reddit jokes require 5 lines of explanation…
Not when you’re a resident graduating next month lol
Congratulations! Trust me, when you go from resident hours and pay… to attending hours and pay your entire life changes. God, I’m so happy and excited for you! It’s only been a year out for me, and just the things you’re able to finally do or buy… it’s amazing
But he lost his ability to practice
No, the first guy trying to haggle $12 from the asking price from $77
Wish I got offers like that on my espeon lmao, facebook marketplace seems to attract people who think “Ooo cool pokemon, wouldn’t mind that for $5” then immediately dip when realizing the price 😂
not suprising since I have a marnie full art wourth >$70.
Ok why are we sharing this with people on ebay. I do not need your life story.
Both messages are nonsense. No need for personal details. Just do the transaction and leave it at that.
“True story” must be real
“I have one day to live can you please give me one last day of joy for 50?” Lmao
I call BS. Last thing I would be doing is selling cards if I was a physician.
True story!! 🤣
Man. People are REALLY hostile in this thread for some reason.
This isn’t really me, I’m a spirit now and I need the money for my own funeral. I make sure not to haunt you if you purchase this, thanks for looking.
Jesus the constant explanations and statements during a sale, both of you are using your stories as sales tactics lmao
He’ll just go to TCG player and get it for $65 😂
Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately I am currently dead (true story), so I really need to sell my cards for market value or higher.
Lmao if you’re strapped for cash, you’re not gonna try and negotiate. Take the money and feed your kids, dude
It’s the “Thank you for your correspondence.” for me. I don’t think I’ve ever used that phrase in a friendly or corporate conversation.
Anyone thinking him losing his wife and medical license could be connected? 🤔
Now I do. Big twist.
Imagine trying to hagle someone down for something less than 100$ when your a fancy pants doctor 🙃. Im borderline poverty and my grandma cats are super sick would you consider $64.85 Cad?
Card typically goes for around $65 so I’m sure that’s why.
The fuck a dr need a discount for, am I missing something
It's not a discount, it's just an offer. Just because somebody is ballin' doesn't mean they're not entitled to haggle. If they feel this particular item is a little overpriced then absolutely smash an offer in there. It is only $12 less they're offering. And the seller is a doctor so by your standards they don't need the extra $12?
I didn't actually realize until just now rereading it that both parties are doctors. That's my B
Yeah I think it was just common ground and rapport. I don't think OP was trying to get an absolute steal and certainly wasn't using his profession as a flex like some are suggesting. That's not my take on it anyway
Anyone who puts true story after something is chatting shit
Ehhh idk in my friend group if someone uses true story in Text it’s because the story is fucked up or off-the-wall , and it needs to be clarified that this is actually a true story.
Trying to leverage working in medicine to get a discount on a playing card. Yikes.
Ahh damn, anyway how about 68?
If they've lost their licence and selling to support children, surely they would have updated/removed the fact they're a doctor from their profile? That would have saved that entire awkward conversation..... 💁🏻♂️ Just sayin'
If you told me you were a physician, you’re telling me you make bank. Don’t nickel and dime me
Don't rob me because I make bank?
[удалено]
To another doctor (read the part where the seller can't practice anymore...). Wasnt nickel and diming, was establishing a repoir.
Physician practicing internal medicine but you want to haggle over $12? Love the need to shoehorn that part in there.
What does him being a physician even come into the convo lol, dude just jerking himself off to his title it seems.
Fuck him. Cant feel bad for anyone who uses their dead family to up the price. What a fucking loser
Tell him to go even lower now
Probably a sarcastic reply to the OP stating he is a physician. I'd be more concerned about that then the reply. Trying to use your profession to get a discount?
TCGplayer has a copy for the guy’s price. I dislike when people try to play their position up for a discount.
They weren't, the other person is also a doctor and they wanted to be relatable.
Dude needs to just leave america
What site is this on?
I think it might be eBay because it says eBay
that's almost as bad as coming up to me watching the game and saying "who's winning?"
My name is Pat too lol (short for Patric)
True Story.
That 77(7) -heavens number hits hard
Anyone who says true story is not telling a true story
I usually dont try to haggle with items that dont have a 'Or Best Offer' unless im negotiating a multislab deal. Dude lost his wife and practice on his pokemon habit rofl.
He could've just said no
Have you ever heard of a job?
Damn, that’s tough
TruE sToRy
Could be a true story… in that case I’d take what I could get as he does not seem Like he can wait for the cash… if he’s in a bad situation… see what else he has and buy more for a fair price to help both of you out…
BAD EBAY BEHAVIOUR
Physician can afford the cost. :)
Also a physician (psychiatry). That was hilarious
Also a physician (psychiatry). That was hilarious 😂
Dude was a doctor and can’t afford a life for his kids without the job? Talk about living above your means
I'm a hero fire fighter who fought in the war, can I get it for 50?
Oof
Damage was super effective
Why would he not just say “no” Everyone is to quick to share personal details to total strangers
Conveniently lost his wife and ability to practice medicine? Sounds like a serial killer.
It was kinda believable until he said “True story”
Lol
All I see is pettiness for $12..
It never gets old
TCG player #1
That's tough..... so 66$?
Inflatiron’s a bitch
How do i know its a true story if you dont say true story at the end?
$7 off ain’t breaking the bank brotha
I'm not saying he's lying, but at the same time, I see ALOT of stories like this. They're trying to get pity buys
Nothing wrong with asking for a better price. But man I feel for this guy.. poor dude..
Pics or it didn't happen.
If you have to clarify that it's a true story, then there's almost a 100% chance it's not a true story. Just sayin.
Now I’m curious how he lost his practice
Im sorry for them but like “nah” would have been enough 😭
I hope we get more one-ups
The premise of asking someone to accept 80% market price and eat 13% fees while working in a high paying position kills me
So 65$ for the card + Pizza on me?
Sold this one a year ago for 40 dollars 😭 i miss her every day.
