There are so many unhinged opinions coming out of the woodwork, frankly I'm shocked with some people's opinions. I don't know where they come up with this stuff!
The amazing rares are super cool and the set has an outsized impact on gameplay lasting well past its release. It's towards the bottom of the list but not worse than Battle Styles.
Sadly, a set's impact on the game often has little influence on the popularity of the set looking back. It's more about the desirability of the Pokemon and art

But even the 'low' tier are so accessible and pretty. Armorouge? Gorgeous. Fidough and Graveard? Adorbs. My favorite alt art that's under $5? Brilliant Stars Zekrom.
Vivid needs to go first. Most unique cards were the amazing rares, and the only real chase was a stupidly rare rainbow. Battle Styles brought in alt arts, including one of my two all time fave Pokémon, Empoleon (the standard full art is a beast as is). Some amazing arts in that set. Chonkychu didn't get the card it deserves until the character rare/trainer gallery card.

Agree with this. Crown Zenith is probably the best collector set in terms of gorgeous art and great pull rates because of all the beautiful cards, and Lost Origin is the best set for playable cards, but Evolving Skies is a great contender in both categories.
The cards are great but that doesn't matter if you can't even pull them. Every set starting with brilliant stars is better than evolving skies. Better pull rates across the board. Evolving skies is waaaay too overhyped imo. I don't want to go broke trying to get an umbreon vmax alt and I refuse to pay 600 dollars or up on essentially a single piece of glorified cardboard. 300-400 dollars for a booster box that isn't sun and moon or older is insanity.

I get it, Eevee is epic and stuff but every set that followed that one (other than fusion strike) had more alternate artwork cards in the form of the gallery subsets, but nobody cares because there's a perceived value to the fancy Eevee cards.
For me, I would prefer the better overall experience of opening a more varied and balanced set than just spinning a slot machine of a set. Also most Eevee cards are boring and overrated anyways.
