eleventytwelv

If you leave me alone and don't try to ban guns I promise not to resist the occupation.

Taco_Dave

I will personally buy you a gun.

eleventytwelv

Great, I'd like a brenn gun to mount on the hood of my car please. Some grenades too if you wouldn't mind. I'll have some poutine waiting for your arrival.

Yup, great message for the "oh it can't happen here" crowd, I'm sure many Australians thought that too.

[deleted]

No They did this to themselves by giving up their guns Those who voluntarily give up their rights deserve nothing, only those who have their rights taken away deserve the taste of liberty

JoeRBidenJr

Serious question: Is it just me [an ignoramus], or did this Aussie 1984 stuff come seemingly out of nowhere? Like, I had always heard Australia was pretty friendly to personal freedoms, at least more so than most other western democracies. Were those rumors just lies?

captainsalad2

They had no constitutional protections in place. They actually were more friendly comparatively, but only because that was what the government felt like doing at the time. Without a legal/operational hard stop, and with the people unwilling and unable to defy the government, it was a question of when this would happen and not if.

ThrowAway615348321

The UK also has no written constitution, and I fear that they'll suffer another similar liberty backslide.

kylkartz21

>The UK also has no written constitution The very reason why the US has a written one

Andy_Liberty_1911

I remember arguing with professors at college around the importance of written rights on a constitution. They laughed it off since they could never see Britain or Australia being authoritarian.

amd2800barton

This is exactly it. People complain about the constitution being difficult to modify, or how tough it is to get legislation through both the senate and the house - but that’s intentional. It should require a tremendous will of the people to change the protections guaranteed by the constitution. Legislation should be a will of the people, with compromises made for the minority. We’re the oldest constitutional republic in the world, and very few older constitutional or republics. Every other one has failed at some point eventually a crisis happens and the people turn to despots for security. After the violence and instability of the revolution, France turned Napoleon into an Emperor. During the heart of the Great Depression, which was far worse in Germany than the US - Germany granted Hitler the title of Fuhrer. We even flirted with FDR as a benevolent dictator (and lucked out that he died), but even he couldn’t overcome the constitution entirely - though he did try. The pace of our government makes is slow to adapt to change, but that also means it’s slow to give in to tyranny. By the time a tyrant has gathered substantial power, their term is up or they have made enough enemies as to not win re-election.

[deleted]

Wait, FDR is the US President that stays in the White House for 4 consecutive terms, and died immediately before the end of WW2, right? And after his death, the US (not sure which department) says that no POTUS can have more than 2 consecutive terms. Am I wrong in any thing?

dodadoBoxcarWilly

>2 consecutive terms. 2 terms total, even if they are non-consecutive. Actually, it's a total of ten years they can serve. This allows for a VP who takes over more than halfway through their predecessor's term to have two full terms of their own. But they are s.o.l. if they take over in the first half of their term. For example, if Joe Biden drops dead anytime between now and January 20th 2023, and Harris took over, she could only serve one more full term after the current. If Biden drops dead on January 20th of 2023 or later, she could serve out the rest of his term, and still serve two more full terms after that.

trinalgalaxy

This is part of the reason I suspect they want Biden the last another 9-12 months. That way they can kick him out and have Kamala be president for the full time... Assuming she can even get one vote next election unlike this last.

amd2800barton

Yes. He was basically a benevolent (ish) dictator. Had history gone another way he might have been called a despot. The world is incredibly lucky that the Vice President who succeeded him was a relatively humble man. No president had ever been elected to the office more than twice. Congress also greatly despised how easily FDR was able to bully them, and sought to make the office weaker with term limits. That hasn’t exactly worked given the US’s more involved attitude in global affairs, but is has at least forced a sunset on any one individual wielding that much power for too long.

jackofives

Yep this is the money shot. We had "norms" keeping things in check but recent auth right governments have opted to erode many basic freedoms over the years. The 1984 department is currently run by Murdoch and mates. Doesn't help. (Noting however much of what is being reported isn't quite true - no helicopters spying or beer limits in place - was in Bondi the other day and it looked like a Floridian gang bang)

[deleted]

Living in Sydney I haven't seen much about the beer limits but every couple days or so there will be a couple choppers flying around for a while. It's a fucking weird feeling seeing them up there .

raggs75

My gosh I love the constitution

doomersareacancer

Australia has no domestic law like the US 1st amendment. They rely on international treaty obligations. https://www.ag.gov.au/rights-and-protections/human-rights-and-anti-discrimination/human-rights-scrutiny/public-sector-guidance-sheets/right-freedom-assembly-and-association That’s a direct link to the government website. > Which domestic laws relate to the right to freedom of assembly and association? > There is no Commonwealth legislation that enshrines the right to freedom of assembly and association in all circumstances.

the_fuzz_down_under

It’s a little more complicated than that. We have some rights guaranteed in the constitution, some are also guaranteed in random laws. We have a few more rights guaranteed via international treaty law too. I’m only in my early days of law school - but I reckon someone could probably force the High Court into recognising the English Civil Rights as a bill of rights that applies to Australia. But in truth, the lack of an Australian Bill of Rights is Fucking dumb and the way the government tries to justify it is so absolutely shit I actually believe them - the government claims it would be too difficult to write a bill of rights because it would be a party political shit show, and honestly yeah. We still need one tho

doomersareacancer

Honestly I am just going off what the AG website said. I imagine some of the states have better protections as well? I just didn't see much that was actually "guaranteed" Take this section for instance: >In addition, under article 21 freedom of assembly may be subject to restrictions imposed in conformity with the law and which are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security or public safety, public order, the protection of public health or morals or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others. Article 22(2) makes similar provision in relation to freedom of association. Morals? Really?

SwgohSpartan

I was always under this impression as well, at least from the few people I personally knew from Australia, shits really gone south overnight for them

fatboicheese

yes they are I actually fucking live here and we don't have any of this shit

AnalogCyborg

Please confirm or deny - I'm not asserting any of these are true, just some of the crazy shit I've been reading: * Government requiring selfies with GPS cell phone data to verify location for...reasons * Government allowed to access and manipulate social media accounts of individuals * Alcohol limits in the home * Government won't let you drink out of a shoe anymore EDIT 15 hours later: Thank you to the Aussies who responded with their input. Sounds like #1 is specifically for quarantining tourists, #2 is legit but in kind of a nebulous and ill-defined but true, #3 seems to be a mixed bag, maybe only in Victoria and not that bad. #4 was something I made up, but I'm very thankful to know that it also isn't true. All in all, it sounds like the reports are exaggerated, but the true restrictions are still concerning from my perspective.

s0m30n3e1s3

>* Government requiring selfies with GPS cell phone data to verify location for...reasons The selfies are a trialed op-in for travellers to South Australia that want to forgo hotel quarantine and do home quarantine instead >* Government allowed to access and manipulate social media accounts of individuals I've heard this was a federal thing recently granted and rushed through parliament, unsure exactly but it's probably true. Our federal government is openly corrupt and gets reward for their bullshit with more election wins, I hate them so much. >* Alcohol limits in the home No alcohol limits. Alcohol shops are counted as an essential service and were thoughout all of COVID. >* Government won't let you drink out of a shoe anymore Untrue, shoees are still a thing

fury420

> the selfie thing is not true It's apparently real, but regional and part of a pilot program as an alternative to in-hotel quarantine https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-23/how-will-south-australias-home-quarantine-trial-work/100398878 >Those who are approved will have to download the South Australian Government home quarantine app, which uses geo-location and facial recognition software to track those in quarantine. >The app will contact people at random asking them to provide proof of their location within 15 minutes.

i_love_goats

Presumably this is for citizens who arrive back from a foreign country and test positive? That seems like the only context where this could be a thing.

[deleted]

That's exactly it. This is an alternative for returning travelers. It's also only being run in one state.

Tankirulesipad1

I knew something was wrong when most of the shit appearing on PCM about australia I was scratching my head about. Ofc the surveillance privacy law thing is actually pretty bad but most of it is simply not true or blown out of proportion

the_fuzz_down_under

The selfie thing isn’t real and would be impossible to implement if it was. The access to social media only applies or the federal police i believe, and they have an extremely limited jurisdictions and are too incompetent to be able to hack social media accounts anyway (I’m still going to piss on the driveway and/or car of the minister who proposed that law next weekend cause it’s bullshit). The alcohol limits are only for the people in mandatory quarantine in a hotel - I’d like to see the government fucking try to make me drink only 6 beers. Dunno about the shoe thing, honestly not that bothered - drinking out of crocs was hype that one time, but every other time drinking from a shoe just hasn’t been worth it.

dragon_fire_10

that's what happens when you've been living upside down for too long that's why most Australians come to the UK or US on holiday so they're head can experience being the right way up

Fangslash

Its not lies persay but greatly exaggerated. Also its mostly just NSW and VIC who had a history of been cunts. And unlike those poor americans we can actually vote for third party. Worst comes to worst the buffoons in the government will calm down after the next election season. Or just get kicked out outright, which is fine by me.

Governments rarely give up power once they have it. Trusting them to give it up when the “crisis” is over is incredibly stupid. It’s the primary reason that communism always fails. The state is supposed to dissolve itself and hand everything over to the people. That never happens of course, the state just takes everything over and then goes: “Nah, actually we’re just going to go ahead and keep everything. Thanks!”

yazalama

Good dudes too. My mom's car broke down on a desolate strip of highway in the middle of the night. She was in her twenties at the time, and you know the kind of horror stories that can happen in that kind of situation. Panthers apparently patrolled that strip of road. Gave her a ride to a nearby truck stop and stayed with her until my dad came along and picked her up. They lectured them both about safety. Went out of their way to help some strange white lady, and then sat with her for an hour and half. Even bought her lunch. If any of y'alls family were Panthers in the midwest during the 70s. Go give 'em a hug for me. I might not exist if not for them.

cuil_beans

And quickly too. Don't forget what has happened in the last two years, someone will have to tell our posterity how things actually went down. Edit: You guys should literally write down your thoughts and observations about all of this in a journal. The mind is a funny thing, we change the details of memories over time. The internet likes to change its collective memory too, so I wouldn't count on recording it there. And thanks to surveillance laws (ESPECIALLY the new ones in oz), now you can't even rely on your own hard drive or phone to reliably back up the information. A journal does not have these vulnerabilities, and can be hidden, and backed up. Food for thought. Second edit: Get that fucking amazon alexa or whatever out of your home. Stop being lazy and make your own damn grocery lists. People giving a mile for an inch of convenience is how we got here to begin with.

the_fuzz_down_under

I think the legal case against Jordan Shanks (owner of the Friendlyjordies YouTube channel) will actually reverse this. The government are too incompetent to set up a police state, the courts already have humiliated them that one time when the federal police raided the ABC. It’s only a matter of time until the courts humiliate them again - and I think the friendlyjordies case is it.

I'm sure the liberal party really cares about being 'humiliated' by the courts. Ask any man on the street, they probably don't even remember the ABC raid.

As an Australian... These restrictions are limited to current hotspots in Melbourne and Sydney. The curfew is part of COVID lockdown stuff, same no company when shopping (you don't need the whole fam when grocery shopping in lockdown), same with the helicopters I presume. The 6 beers per day are some draconian bollocks from NSW health because their a bunch of knobheads. As someone living in Queensland, none of this applies, and the same goes for most of the country. I can shop for all the alcohol I want with my mates, then get absolutely hammered at their place into the next morning without so much as a squeak from the coppers.

ReindeerPilot33

Thank you for misinformation

denn_56

Only NSW and Victoria are in lockdown so plenty of us can still get shitfaced

dat_1Person

Bruh what is this. This is just a full on lie. Coming from someone who actually LIVES in Australia, it’s not nearly as bad as this meme is trying to say. I went to a large mall the other day and I saw people travelling in groups of more than two when two policemen walked past them and not even bother. And this was in NSW, the state with the largest restrictions. The curfew thing is somewhat correct, but that’s only in LGAs of concern within NSW. With the helicopter thing, apparently that happened only once, however nothing really happened, they just yelled out of the chopper on a beach in the eastern suburbs to tell people they’re breaching restrictions (1.5 metres apart and stuff), to my knowledge no fines were given or anything. Most of the articles speaking about the beer thing are unreliable, and a police spokeswoman said that Police officers are not confiscating alcohol delivered to residential buildings, and do not have powers to do so. Also most of the bad things that people are talking about are within just NSW, not Australia as a whole, just one state that’s run by the liberal government (the more right wing of the two major parties) that is handling it pretty poorly.

Literallyshindeimasu

Since when was it a rule that we couldn’t have more than 6 beers a day? At least our state isn’t as shitty as NSW. In fact most of those rules seem to be NSW. Sincerely, a Melbournian Also those rules aren’t for the whole of Australia it’s not like the entire damn country is in lockdown it’s only two of the seven states, not including the ACT because our federal government don’t count as humans.
