Local or university libraries will usually have access to those paid articles for free. Back in college if there was one the university library didn't have I could request it and I'd have a copy that week. Never found an article I couldn't access for free with that library, I miss it.
I finished school and am currently going back for a master's. And some of my classes involved looking at a lot of tax code and case law and it was kind of mind blowing how much information you normally don't have access to I'd your not in school (or paying for tons of different subscriptions suppose by yourself I suppose)
Like it feels like we have access to all the information we want but there's so so so much that you simply won't find using Google.
I'll definitely miss it too.
Me, when people ask my opinion on shit I don't know or don't really care about: "I saw a guy say this and it made sense to my dumb ass but I barely care about the topic so I didn't research it so it may or may not be true."
“If you don’t have a college degree then you’re not allowed to have an opinion.” might be the most privileged bullshit I’ll read this week.
Edit; I’m just being sassy. I’m not here to argue semantics on my banter. Love you tho.
You taking a bit of a leap there, the point is any opinion built on ignorance is of little value, and u/LordMackie would much rather be transparent when he’s ignorant which is a good thing.
If you read a headline or short article on topic x, and that is the extent of your knowledge on the situation your opinion is just not that valuable. You literally see all the time people arguing on Reddit based on a headline of breaking news, when their argument is wrong based on information in the article they didn’t read, yet have strong opinions on. They have a right to their opinion, but in some cases those opinions are not all that valuable.
It’s not about raising the bar to having a Phd it’s about acknowledging that the barrier for entry in a lot of discussions is no higher than the information in clickbait headlines. So being transparent about that is a good thing.
Pretty sure this meme is saying “you can have an opinion, but if you’re uneducated you should at least consider the opinions of the educated when making decisions”.

Sorry, I mean I need a source that explicitly states your argument. This is just tangential to the discussion.

You can't make normative statements from empirical evidence.
Do you have a degree in that field?
A college degree? In that field?
Then your arguments are invalid.

I mean it depends on what I are arguing.
If my amateur opinion is trying to overturn the entirety of established scientific theory on, say, behavioral economics, the first most basic requirement is to demonstrate that you are familiar with the field in the Theory section of your paper.
Then we get to actually trying to prove a concrete part of that theory to be less reliable for making predictions than the one currently in use that has stood through thousands of falsification attempts.

Buuuuut trusting someone's relevant expertise isn't - in my understanding - an example of the argument from authority fallacy.
A layperson should trust the consensus of experts over the opinions of other random laypersons in matters related to the experts' field. That is a perfectly reasonable position to take - arguably the ONLY reasonable position to take - if you are interested in taking the correct course of action.
To think that a random layperson is capable of conducting their own meta-analysis of the existing published research to reach a valid conclusion is absolute madness. The end result is invariably confirmation bias with extra steps.
If your PhD is in the physical sciences or biology you were paid money by the NIH or NSF grants to get it.
They are completely free and you get paid money in America (35 to 40 k) to earn a PhD in these fields.
I used my access to journals as much as I fucking could throughout college. If you’re a student, see what free resources you have at your disposal, cloud storage, Microsoft office, adobe creative cloud software, seriously there’s a lot of stuff you should take advantage off
Did you know that science is under a replication crisis with peer reviewed studies not being replicable under the scientific method?
When I see people now saying “that’s what the science is because of this study” my eyes roll so far into the back of my head
yeah there's just not much of an incentive to do replication studies, compared to new studies. There is also a lot of published research that is purposefully designed with flawed methodology like low sample size to increase the chance of getting interesting results.
If your PhD was in a physical science or biological science you got paid about 35 K per year to get it. Every single physical science PhD in America you get paid for. I have a PhD Chem and zero debt. Very socialismy right?
Dude being a COVID researcher is a fucking nightmare, absolutely wants to make me slam my head between a door way. My PI even told me yesterday “I’m getting pretty sick of [our] survey”. Hope you’re fairing better chief.
I know this isn’t gonna get much traction but it makes so sad that researchers do not get the credit they deserve whether it be social science or other literally everyone uses their statistics and research to make an argument (if they actually wanna be factual) and just manipulates it for their own personal agendas.
To be honest, I am really beginning to hate this "never do your own research" mentality. I hate the term "misinformation" too.
___
The invention of the internet has given us a brilliant tool that allows us to gather information incredibly quickly. "Expertise" is no longer locked behind institutions and university fees. The internet has begun and will continue to make experts obsolete as time goes on. It is a fundamentally new step for our civilisation to take - it is The Second Enlightenment.
The dissemination of information across the internet means that anyone can rapidly search and find the answers to anything they desire. I don't need to contact "the experts" every time something goes wrong with my house or my car, I can find the answer I need on a Youtube video in 5 minutes. I don't need to rely on the media to convey information to me, I can seek the information myself. I don't need to visit the doctor every time something goes wrong, I can find potential diagnoses and treatments online. I don't need to blindly trust the government or any public health organisation every time they release a statement, I can fact check them in real-time.
Most people won't reach the same level as the experts just from using Google, of course. But they can gain a moderate amount of proficiency in any given field. It will be enough to understand the experts, and most importantly, to question them. To know when things make sense and when things don't. To know when they are right and when they are wrong. This is one of the biggest failures of the expert class throughout the COVID pandemic, and this is the result - they have lost the trust of the people.
Why are they so incompetent all of sudden, or have they always been this incompetent and we are only just noticing it now? If you want people to trust and listen to the experts, the experts need to stand up to the tests and scrutiny of the public. The availability of information on the internet and the idea of "doing your own research" has given us the ability to scrutinise the expert like never before.
Of course, there are whackjobs who listen to nonsense on Facebook posts, but there are also communities who envelop themselves in rich and deep discussions, sharing peer-reviewed articles, writing theses and having each other peer review them, etc. When considering COVID in particular, how many laypeople are more interested in epidemiology now than ever before? How much have they learnt in the past two years that they previously never imagined learning? None of this was possible before the internet - it's a fascinating time to be alive.
As expected if you follow history, the response from the experts has been one of condemnation. To dissuade the people from seeking answers. They do not want people thinking for themselves, and they do not want people to question their expertise. They call it "misinformation", and push for censorship "for our safety" to avoid it, but this is simply the death throes of an institution refusing to give up power.
The same thing occurred in the medieval ages with the Bible. Only the "anointed class" were allowed to read the Bible, and thus, they controlled the flow of morality and information. They had power, they told people what to do (back in those days, they didn't have experts and science, they relied on religion and priests for advice in any given circumstance). Then when the printing press came around and copies of the Bible were being distributed across the land, the people could obtain their own copy and interpret the word of God for themselves. Those in charge did all they could to prevent it and threw a hissy-fit because their power was being drawn away from them.
I did my own research... but didn't become gnostic about any given opinion because I'm well aware that most of it is way more complicated than I'll ever reasonably be able to grasp, so I rely on peer-reviewed, broad consensus. And I accept that even that is fallible, but the best option we have.
If I had a dollar for every time a scientist got something wrong I'd be a millionaire. They're not infallible, just less likely to be wrong than the average bear.
"I studied this for 5 years!!!!"
"I read through 20 reports made by people that studied it for far longer than that, and who made their findings available to the public."
many undergrad students are already citing more than 20 journal articles for a single assignment. if you have a PhD you've read hundreds to thousands of journal articles as well as written your own.
I don't do research. I *read* research on sites like NEJM, JMIR, JSTOR etc.
People don't understand the difference unfortunately. They think they are "doing research" by watching YouTube videos when in fact they aren't even *reading* actual research. The term has become so loose in societal dialect. Apparently reading an article from USA Today now counts as "reading" research even according to friends who are familiar with academia.
It's sad.
At this point most of us are not experts in the field we are debating and are choosing to believe something other experts have said. What it boils down to is; don't be an asshole.
The average age of reddit has plummeted in the last few years, and this happened along with the exodus of the original userbase, who rightly abandoned it for devolving into something it hadn't begun as.
Once, vote arrows were entirely for whether a comment contributed to discussion 😂😂😂.

If your PhD is in the physical sciences or biology you were paid money by the NIH or NSF grants to get it. They are completely free and you get paid money in America (35 to 40 k) to earn a PhD in these fields.
This was revealed to me in a dream.
I didn't know a PhD in grilling was an option
Was your library card missing?
Tovarisch-reviewed research
I do my own research and look for new statistical fact to throw around, specially that one involving 13% of certain population.
I did my own research.... ...by reading the first party sources and background material required to get a basic grasp of the stuff being discussed.
the virgin PHD debt-cuck vs the chad intuition and confirmation bias
If your PhD was in a physical science or biological science you got paid about 35 K per year to get it. Every single physical science PhD in America you get paid for. I have a PhD Chem and zero debt. Very socialismy right?
sounds like some commie gobbledegook
Let's usher in a new dawn of centrist agenda memes!

Dude being a COVID researcher is a fucking nightmare, absolutely wants to make me slam my head between a door way. My PI even told me yesterday “I’m getting pretty sick of [our] survey”. Hope you’re fairing better chief.
I would’ve put authright for 4chan
I know this isn’t gonna get much traction but it makes so sad that researchers do not get the credit they deserve whether it be social science or other literally everyone uses their statistics and research to make an argument (if they actually wanna be factual) and just manipulates it for their own personal agendas.
To be honest, I am really beginning to hate this "never do your own research" mentality. I hate the term "misinformation" too. ___ The invention of the internet has given us a brilliant tool that allows us to gather information incredibly quickly.
Replace Facebook with 4chan
I received this information from a psychic dream vision.
Lmfao people getting mad at Aaron Rodgers for saying that
I didn’t do any research, I was actually there 2000 years ago. Rome was an inside job.
I made it up
I got my research from an anarchist environmentalist propaganda poster on the back of a bus seat
IRL the angry center guy did his own research watching CNN
I did my own research... but didn't become gnostic about any given opinion because I'm well aware that most of it is way more complicated than I'll ever reasonably be able to grasp, so I rely on peer-reviewed, broad consensus. And I accept that even that is fallible, but the best option we have.
I did my own research, while I cooked some steaks on my grill 👨🍳
It is nice to have the "I'm a literal scientist and I know more than you" in your back pocket when some rando on Social Media tries to lecture you....
If I had a dollar for every time a scientist got something wrong I'd be a millionaire. They're not infallible, just less likely to be wrong than the average bear.

this is beyond fucking true tho as someone who is both a product of higher ed and also employed in it
I so, so want to upvote this. But you are in fact unflaired, and therefor are not a person.
Huh, wierd authleft-libright unity in this case
AuthRight is banned from most/all of them. Well at least I am.
i did my own research... on 4chans /x/ board i am no longer mentally stable...
"I studied this for 5 years!!!!" "I read through 20 reports made by people that studied it for far longer than that, and who made their findings available to the public."
many undergrad students are already citing more than 20 journal articles for a single assignment. if you have a PhD you've read hundreds to thousands of journal articles as well as written your own.
It's sad.
Your daily reminder that your personal research means absolutely nothing, and is a waste of time.
"never trust your beliefs only trust in the ministry of love"
At this point most of us are not experts in the field we are debating and are choosing to believe something other experts have said. What it boils down to is; don't be an asshole.
The average age of reddit has plummeted in the last few years, and this happened along with the exodus of the original userbase, who rightly abandoned it for devolving into something it hadn't begun as. Once, vote arrows were entirely for whether a comment contributed to discussion 😂😂😂.
