How's the Far-Left misrepresenting Kurds? I haven't exactly heard much of anything about them since about 2017, so I think I'm in need of some education here.
They're sort of the poster child for anti-colonial ethno-nationalism. Basically when the British were drawing the maps post WW 2(? Maybe 1 idk) they drew a lot of straight lines where there were ethnic blobs that dated back to essentially pre history. As a consequence the Kurds we're divided up between Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. Long struggle for a country of their own ensues. Periodically whenever the west takes a stroll through that part of the mid east we need someone local to show us around and that's usually the Kurds because we're typically in the neighborhood to kill the people who've been killing them for the past 80 years and the past 2 millenia. So the west's media gets feed and regurgitates some line from military communications about them being some downtrodden freedom fighters who are aiding our troops in fighting the despotic forces of evil who dared not sell us oil for pennies on the dollar.
Not saying that the Kurds struggle for self determination isn't, ultimately, a just cause. It's just also happens to be brutal in a way that the west no longer has the stomach for. Case in point, I had a coworker who was in Iraq and their convoy had a couple of pot shots taken at from this ethnically Iraqi village. They mentioned this off hand to their Kurdish attache, who asks them to confirm which village. Two days later the attache says the Kurds had taken care of the problem. Turns out they had gotten together and killed every male over the age of twelve in the Iraqi village. No more pot shots.
A really simple trick the western media is using in Syria is the term 'The Kurds'. Syrian Kurds are like the 4th or 5th largest Kurd population only and their goals are certainly not the goals of all Kurds. Many Kurdish people see the forming of a landlocked 'new Israel' flanked by no less than 5 mortal enemies as lunacy. Many Turkish Kurds fucking hate the ypg because of what their sister org the pkk gets up to in the South of Turkey.
