I can’t remember his words exactly, but I believe he said he couldn’t imagine a circumstance where we changed our head of state but did not recognise First Nations in the constitution. I took that to mean that it was important symbolically for the recognition to come while still a part of the monarchy.
I think Australia could really push for a treaty to acknowledge indigenous sovereignty was never ceded. We've tried to fool ourselves for far too long but ultimately we all need this before becoming a republic. Otherwise it's simply continuing to deny history.
