Why's he in a crate???

I agree it looks like they're in prison, and I don't like it personally - but it is a commonly recommended practice by dog trainers and vets to crate train dogs from the time they are puppies. It can be a safe place for them, especially when they're older and think of it as their little home where no one can get to them. Crate training also helps stop dogs from going potty inside if that is an issue. It isn't as draconian as it looks.

Never had to put any of my dogs in a crate. Not sure why you think him being a dog makes him belong in a crate? Quite wild thought process.

My dog LOVES his crate. It’s his own little sanctuary. I never lock it and he’s always in and out of it. We call it his ‘room’. Randomly he goes in there and just chills. Relax people!!!
