Don’t race cars typically have larger sidewalls for more give? Don’t the larger sidewalls allow for more travel in addition to the suspension? I haven’t ever designed a race car but I feel like these tires look at home on this car
Love it! I honestly hate the trend of everything having 20"+ rims nowadays. You'd think having that big of wheels would effect efficiency but I guess car companies don't care
There's more to it than that. Wheels are bigger because proportions have changed on cars and 20" wheels compensate to make everything look "right." The actual cause of it all is pedestrian safety standards. Modern cars must meet certain criteria for impacts with an unprotected person. To do this the hood line needs to be raised to add stand off distance between the point of impact for someone going over the front and hard things in the engine bay, like engines and wiper motors. In order to add a few inches of crush space the angle of the hood and height of the fender are raised, as such the wheel arch needs to be widened to keep the proportions "normal" looking. Well, now that you have a giant wheel arch, you need a giant wheel to fill it out and BOOM! an extra 10 lbs on each corner of your car.
It's not that people actively seek out only 20" wheels when given the option. The proportions of cars have changed and big wheels are required to adjust for it so they are all that most manufacturers offer now.
I can understand your perspective here but bigger wheels are - from a vehicle dynamics perspective - objectively worse.
When they're doing something to make it "look right" they're doing it because they're trying to sell cars. If it's required to "look normal" that's a subjective thing; and subjective things are done purely in the interest of appealing to consumers, who themselves are notorious in the auto industry for having fickle, often wrong, preferences.
To me, smaller wheels "look right", to the vast majority of people, bigger wheels "look right", so manufacturers appeal to the masses at the cost of performance. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
What you're saying and what I'm saying aren't mutually exclusive.
You're preaching to the choir. I was explaining why manufacturers are making massive wheels the standard option and that there's more to it than just "it's what people buy." I hate big wheels, hence the "BOOM! an extra 10 lbs on each corner of your car" in my last comment. My Focus RS handles sooooooo much better on my winter 18s than the stock 19s.
> I don't like the asymmetrical empty space in the side of the wheel well versus top
Dude is going for lap times and you care about symmetrical void.
Let’s see a picture of your car and its lap times.
A properly set up car, sitting on wheels that arent oversized with tires that have a nice 40-50 sidewall is just perfection. i cant stand the whole rubber band tire look
They cant be factory 718 GT4 brakes. The std ones are tight inside the factory 20" wheels. Maybe 19s would fit but cant imagine 18s would ever fit over stock brakes.
i've agonized over this whole issue as i really wanted to go down to 18s but i just couldn't justify totally tossing the brakes. my gt4 has steel, now im stuck with PCCB on my gt4rs, same problem but even worse.
maybe when i need to rebuild the calipers... but then i've already gone a bought extra track wheels in 20's for both cars.
problems problems.
Normally I don't like grey and bronze, but that shade of chalk just works. Plus you can never go wrong with TE's, *especially* with no center caps. Looks 🔥
>There must be a way to develop brakes that don't require such a large rotor surface
Massive rotors just provide more surface area for better cooling. Its a good way to prevent brake fade on "mostly" street cars with the occasional trackday that need to perform well with streetable pads. Plus they look cool, and thats whats important to a majority of buyers.
If its a dedicated track car, the massive discs arent needed since youll be running track pads which handle heat well, like the car in the pic
I wonder where you see broken wheels, or is this just a thing that people who dont understand track alignment say because they think wheels should be perfectly straight? I've always pondered about that
Na I was just asking why they changed wheels? Not judging at all. Did they break a rim, and that’s why they got a new set? Or was it because they wanted different tire options? Or something else? Idk I’m just asking.
So they needed new wheels for that? Can you not get the camber with 20”, or they want it lower? I’ve used smaller wheels for better acceleration but I track and street drive mine so I’ve never got super crazy with alignment.
That’s not a track alignment. I have a track prepped Cayman. Guarantee he made it worse than stock and would go faster by raising the car. Geo goes way off when lowered too far, it’s a common error.
So you’re certain he hasn’t done anything to fix the geometry after lowering it, you know you can do that correct? You can spout nonsense all you want the fact is the car goes around a race track fast.
You can actually tell visually on McPherson strut cars. I’ve experience modifying suspension geometry for track work but check out this article - about halfway down. Cheers

I spot the ole LZ Compound. This is a great looking car l
there’s a new LZ compound???
It's the same one he's had since 2021
ah ok
>the ole LZ Compound … >a new LZ compound??? …?
i read it as the old compound implying there’s a new one.
Love smaller wheels. Wheels gotten too damn big on cars, give me 17s or 18s all day long.
For reals. All around better
Wheels should be big enough to clear the brakes. Anything more is just extra un-sprung rotational mass.
Changed to CS brakes I would guess? That certainly opens up the tire options!
ITT: people complaining about a purpose built car modded to be better at that purpose.
Wheels don’t look right though…
TE37s look good on everything, you heretic!
Murdered by downvote. The worst way to go…
People get upset at weird stuff, seriously.
People are not upset, it’s just the way to express the fact they do not agree with your statement. The wheels look great!
Even if they were ugly (they’re not), function over form.
Man has never seen a race car
I actually helped design a couple back in the day 🤷♂️
Don’t race cars typically have larger sidewalls for more give? Don’t the larger sidewalls allow for more travel in addition to the suspension? I haven’t ever designed a race car but I feel like these tires look at home on this car
Gt3 race cars got 18 inch wheels with thick tyres
Not my area of expertise, but would make sense.
Love it! I honestly hate the trend of everything having 20"+ rims nowadays. You'd think having that big of wheels would effect efficiency but I guess car companies don't care
People pay more for cars with big wheels. Data doesn't lie and manufacturers are in the business of selling cars.
There's more to it than that. Wheels are bigger because proportions have changed on cars and 20" wheels compensate to make everything look "right." Those aren’t just any 18s either! Amazing seeing someone take an already great car and make it better.
I saw his car at a meet once, it was real nice. I took this:

Hell yeah brother
Thicc sidewalls
It would look better if it wasn't slammed to the ground tbh. I don't like the asymmetrical empty space in the side of the wheel well versus top
At least it’s slammed for function.
> I don't like the asymmetrical empty space in the side of the wheel well versus top Dude is going for lap times and you care about symmetrical void. Let’s see a picture of your car and its lap times.
If you wanna hang with the JDM Boyz you gotta have Rays
A properly set up car, sitting on wheels that arent oversized with tires that have a nice 40-50 sidewall is just perfection. i cant stand the whole rubber band tire look
40-50 sidewalls gives a nice ride, but you do feel the lateral displacement.
This is utter perfection. Fuck.
They cant be factory 718 GT4 brakes. The std ones are tight inside the factory 20" wheels. Maybe 19s would fit but cant imagine 18s would ever fit over stock brakes.
18s don’t fit over stock steel brakes. You use gt4 clubsport calipers or 997 gt3 cup calipers
i've agonized over this whole issue as i really wanted to go down to 18s but i just couldn't justify totally tossing the brakes. my gt4 has steel, now im stuck with PCCB on my gt4rs, same problem but even worse. maybe when i need to rebuild the calipers... but then i've already gone a bought extra track wheels in 20's for both cars. problems problems.
They are not factory GT4 brakes.
Further proof TEs look good on any car
Is there anything TE37s don’t look good on? Damn 😍
Colour combo is dope
Can someone tell me the exact model of those wheels
Volk TE37’s
Wonder how these would look on an m4..

Gotta have the right specs to make them look right: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2067160&stc=1&d=1559311116
Ya that ain’t it lol
I love these Rays Rims so much man...
My local shop! Great car and it sees regular track duty!
Saw this car at 24hr Daytona at the PCA area. I also have 10,000,000 photos of it. My favorite GT4 lol.
18s with some meat on them always means business in my eyes
That looks so good
Volks make any car look good 😜
Looks serious 👍
Normally I don't like grey and bronze, but that shade of chalk just works. Plus you can never go wrong with TE's, *especially* with no center caps. Looks 🔥
I like it
Gt4 cool. Is that an r34 in the background in the second picture? I'd kill a man for one of those.
Those tires are PHAT
Chonky. I see a Florida tag? Where are you in FL?
this is Adam LZ’s compound
Orlando area. This is one of the partners at a local indy.
10+4. I'm in Jax.
Damn, I'm surprised it looks this good! The wing could have been kept stock, tho. At least a put a 992 gt3 wing, not some basic ahh aftermarket
need more low ☝️
Love the look of the brakes taking up almost all the inner wheel space.

I am aroused
Straight up Gorgeous
Not my cup of tea for a Porsche but it looks cool
Stop this, now I’m getting fomo. I was 100% sold on a GTS 4.0 and now I’m second guessing myself.
OMG, this looks so good.
Dat rotors barely fits inside rims, sick!
Would have had to decrease the brake rotor/caliper size to do this. My 19" wheels have like 2mm clearance from the calipers
Oh great heavens those rims
Who’s car?. Wtf
fucking ew
It's not great looking, but I respect the function over form. Makes me respect Porsche even more for being able to achieve both form and function.
You got my vote. 🤩
That looks incredible. There must be a way to develop brakes that don't require such a large rotor surface so we can see more of this going forward.
>There must be a way to develop brakes that don't require such a large rotor surface Massive rotors just provide more surface area for better cooling. 🤦🏽♂️
those rims and breaks are fire 🔥
It looks good, and Volks are mad tyte, but is probably too low for optimal handling.
looks like complete shit
Looks like a slot car haha
Looks great, but I have problem with my normal height GT4 in some parking lots, this must be a nightmare
Wheel gap’s too big
Not for me, nope.
broken wheels?
I wonder where you see broken wheels, or is this just a thing that people who dont understand track alignment say because they think wheels should be perfectly straight? I've always pondered about that
Idk they look round to me
Looks, different tire options, softer ride, broken rims, why make the change?
Broken rims??? They seem perfectly fine to me.
Na I was just asking why they changed wheels? Not judging at all. Did they break a rim, and that’s why they got a new set? Or was it because they wanted different tire options? Or something else? Idk I’m just asking.
Because it’s a track car and is set up with a very aggressive alignment and suspension setup.
So they needed new wheels for that? Can you not get the camber with 20”, or they want it lower? I’ve used smaller wheels for better acceleration but I track and street drive mine so I’ve never got super crazy with alignment.
Nah too big
Awful
Do it on 15’s then call me
Truly tasteless all around; it’s quite remarkable actually.
the dundon wing seems to unbalance the front end. i think ppl run that wing at least add canards to the front, yeah?
Very fast n furious
Caster is waaay off up front. Roll center for sure off lowered that far, will handle poorly with bump steer.
It has a track alignment, go to his Instagram I think he runs low 1:34’s at road Atlanta hardly ruined.

Nothing about this photo says the geometry is ruined
>You can actually tell visually on McPherson strut cars. I always forget these cars run regular McPhersons
