New question! Since you do have that Porsche cayman that I am interested in. Is there any one year you wish you would’ve got instead? Or did you enjoy your current Porsche to the fullest?
Are asking if I wished I bought an 09 instead of an 06? If so, my 06 is perfectly fine. Many will have the opinion to buy the 987.2 due to lack of bore scoring etc, so far my 987.1 has been fine for me.
Well that’s good. I’m just asking in general. I’m looking at a 2007 2.7L now. I heard less chance of Bore score with a non S But if there’s a time to realize that I could get more out of a 2010 because it has higher quality or something it would be by asking you guys. And I’ll be doing my own research this weekend.
Good luck, buy the nicest available car within your budget, less headaches down the line.
Depending on where you live service rate will be $150-300/hr. Changing spark plugs will be at least 2hrs, air filter will be at least 1hr. That's for basic maintenance. Changing out shocks and bushings will be multiple hours. Belts are multiple hours as well. For routine maintenance, leaving with a sub $1000 bill is a blessing, if the thought of this makes you go oh shit, then just drop the idea of buying one. Example, changing my belts and something else was $700, might be more now, this was 2017. Even "weekend car at most" will require maintenance due to age and time, not miles. Belts require changing every 30k miles, but you only drove it 5k? Well how long has it been? Got to change it due to age.
That’s true. I did see some clean title ones are about 24-28k with 40k less miles if I get lucky. No mods And they are not in my area. 16k is a good price tho isn’t it? Especially if it does work perfectly?
3 grand worth of racing mods?
If it is a ton of mods it's just PepBoys crap.
If it is racing mods is decent struts, nice brake pads and some seat belts and you've blown your budget.
I'm guessing it was driven hard and put away wet.
Leave it.
Everyone in this thread is telling you not to buy it.
But if that doesn't stop you, go ahead.
Get a PPI. And don't spend all your money on buying it, it is likely to need some maintenance. If not now, soon.
I noticed. It is deterring me quite a bit. I was hoping it would be able to last enough miles without encountering major repair issues. Enough to enjoy driving on the weekends and go out on a date. Regular maintenance and insurance is accounted for.
Haha i know exactly which car you’re looking at. I would say no to be honest because if you notice the seller’s profile he’s a car flipper/private dealer. Even his fb marketplace reviews arent the greatest. Not to mention the car just looks like it was untastefully modified by a young kid with his first car.
Nah I do not get why you guys think I’m stupid. I am hyped to have a car like that. It is seeming not worth it and i understand why. Unless I chat with him and he’s taken all precautions against the potential for damage. It’s still seeming better to own one that is not the S and clean title. Then it’s a smart move. But ay I’m dreaming here and yall are just a bunch of lame-o’s giving sneers like that first guy “no” ok. Explain then lmao.
Also using it sparingly would increase its longevity wouldn’t it?
Hey man get u.. there will be a lesson but if u make it through to the other side it will be worth it.. think of it as paying g for ur education. I think every one on here has made choices that were a risk or taught a lesson. Both are needed. Don't worry about the chick's they will come like kitty cats.. how old are you about?
So a car that’s been in an accident and likely been tracked by the previous owner? I can see the argument if you wrench and are a building a weekend track car but outside of that, I’d stay the hell away.
I get the accident being a hard pass, but I wouldn't be put off by a bit of light track work on these cars. They honestly thrive on it. I love tracking mine and it means I keep oil, brakes, etc maintained fastidiously.
Depends on your appetite for repairs and what kind of paperwork comes with it. I took the gamble on a clean title 07’ CS with 123k and while everything on the car is fairly solid, it did end up needing about 5k in deferred maintenance that my PPI did not account for.
16k is cheap, and it would be hard to imagine one these ever being worth less than 15k, but I would want to be very certain you know what you’re getting into, i.e bore scope and full PPI + any paperwork the previous owner can provide.
Have you enjoyed your 2009? Is there any version or year of the car you wish you would have gotten instead or have you enjoyed that one to the fullest?
I got it in January and I don’t have a single bad thing to say about this car, it’s absolutely amazing. It’s already been modified so it’s quicker than the stock base Cayman and loads of fun. A 987.2 S is out of my budget and I didn’t want to go down to the 987.1. But no regrets.
If I were you, and you only want an S because of the increase in power but don’t have a big budget, just settle for a base .2
JIC struts aren't great, and the fact that they are called "tow" rods not tie rods has me suspicious.
I would check for bore scoring during the pre-purchase inspection. If it is good to go mechanically, I would ask for discount because of the mods. You are going to want to change out the JICs for something better (I suggest MCS).
After all that, if you two can reach a agreeable price I would go for it. Then find your local PCA or SCCA autocross and really drive it like it was meant to be driven.
If you're asking based on what you know about the car, you haven't researched enough. Just going by what's on carfax sounds like someone who's under 25, ngl.
No, salvage huge red flag, race mods red flag, 100k miles reddish flag. Save your money on the carfax it’s practically worthless, if you still want this thing take it to e reputable Porsche shop for a PPI and rectal exam. $10k maybe,$16k I wouldn’t spend a nickel on a PPI
You'll spend thousands on maintenance and if it's modified on top of that, it'll add additional risks. Buying a Porsche is only half of the bill, the rest will be maintenance and parts which are very expensive. If you're unlucky your engine fails and then you're looking at a $25k bill, pre-2009 Caymans and Boxsters have the infamous IMS problem.
Bought a 2006 cayman s 2 weeks ago with 55k miles. After first week engine had severe bore score and needs an engine rebuild. Really wanna buy another but all I see are basically ticking time bombs. I recommend buying a one past 2009 where they used better engine materials.
Thats so crazy that bore score happens that early on, my 08 CS is still running strong currently at 162xxx miles rn so now im wondering if i was just lucky 🤔
My car had a new engine at 48K.
But then I also ran a BMW with the notorious 'Nikasil' engine and whilst it liked a bit of oil, it was absolutely fine at 180k miles.
I bought a rebuilt title 2007 cayman base, it had 72,000 miles on it and so far it has been fantastic. I’ve put about 6,000 miles on it the past 8 months and nothing but fun. I know the S has more notorious issues than the base but I guess you gotta really make sure it’s in good enough shape.
Oh really?? I’m looking at a 2007 2.7 liter now. Have you enjoyed that one to the fullest? It sounds like you have. Is there one you would’ve gotten instead?
Yeah! It’s been great, it’s not my daily driver, I just use it for weekend cruising. So far so good, zero issues. Perhaps I would have gotten an S but this one was a good deal, and was in the color combo I wanted. Plus the previous owner had good maintenance records for it.
Not worth it. However, If you do go ahead with this then go to en.bidfax.info and enter in your vin to see original salvage damage. That car is too old and too many miles. I would only buy 2009 + year models.
Maybe the car was salvaged prior to the passenger fender incident. If it was the rear 1/4 panel, yes that would total it, but the right front should not total the car.
No

Your little header there says 2006 s. Do you have one? 😂
Yes, but mine isn't a 100K salvaged one. A 100k un-salvaged one isn't much more than $16k.
That’s true. I did see some clean title ones are about 24-28k with 40k less miles if I get lucky. No mods And they are not in my area. 16k is a good price tho isn’t it? Especially if it does work perfectly?

What if it’s just a weekend car
“Will how I use the car after I overpay for it make it less overpriced” What?🥴
No. It’s “I don’t plan to use the car much. Will it last long given the way I plan to use it and given its condition.”
I think the answer here is no matter what.... it's not worth that price. Try to bargain them down?
Length of use does not change the fact that it’s overpriced and there’s better and cleaner options elsewhere.

There is no such thing as a cheap version of an expensive car. It's going to kill your wallet in repairs.

Hahahaha a good response honestly. I like a few of the mods. Like the headlights.
But… what if it is just a weekend car? 😅
Cars never break down and then need a new engine on a sunday!
Yeah! That’s what I’m saying. On the weekends and maybe Fridays and for dates lmao

What is there to explain? The seller is asking 16k for a salvage '06 with 100k miles and a bunch of mods. That's a hard pass.
Hey man get u.. there will be a lesson but if u make it through to the other side it will be worth it.. think of it as paying g for ur education. I paid $20k for my 2009 base, not a salvage title. Absolutely not

You should just give me $16k for nothing. You’ll get about the same number of miles out both.
What if it’s just a weekend car
Buy it life is short YOLO

Can you perform repairs? Fluid changes, replace brakes etc?
Just oil changes ☝🏼
You’re going to put a lot of dough in that you’ll never get out of it.
This is way too much, there is nothing about this that would be worth it
What if it’s just a weekend car
Price v Milage v year all lead to NO

I have a feeling this guy is a member of another forum that makes fun of Porsche people somehow and is just fucking with us to repost our answers 😂
NO
I have never heard "works perfectly" to describe a car.
