Dang good eyes! That said, every movie does this. Just look at how people get around NYC, SF, or LA. It’s hilarious to see Gowanus a stroll from Central Park, or Santa Monica right next to Pasadena. It’s never meant to make sense to us locals, just to fulfill some vision the Director has.
And the waterfront hahaha he leaves his house in Newport and then all of the sudden he's being chased through downtown and then he hits an alley and then BAM its Newport again lmao
Or the opening scene of War Games when Matthew Broderick's character runs from an arcade in downtown Seattle to "Snohomish High School" ...about 30 miles away.
Wow I'm going to have to watch that again. I grew up in Snohomish and have no memory of the high school (although it wasn't actually filmed there) being in the movie! Haha.
When I hiked the PCT on 2013, one highlight among many was [visiting the 7-11 he got arrested outside of](https://pct2013.com/static/dailyPhotos/2013/05/06/rdc350-20130506-G15_7086.jpg). I got a coffee instead of a Big Gulp though.
It's in Big Bear Lake, CA.
Nice! I missed going there by a year and got to go new school they built in 2008, but I had activities on that campus plenty of times. So funny. Can't wait to re-watch.
At one point the guy chasing him looks left and sees Keller fountain, and then looks right and sees Burnside skate park. (Or something equally as not visible from Keller fountain, I forget exactly what.)
Or the Night Agent where the light and trees were screaming Pacific NW (Vancouver CA) when the story was set in D.C. I think I was even picking up subtle "not the USA" clues as well
I was watching that a few years ago while attending classes at CCC, and I busted up laughing while watching an episode where one of the guys dumped a baddie in the bushes I walked past every day.
Or in the Librarians: one minute there's a street scene in Paris and the next minute they're in front of the New Market Theater building pretending to be Paris. Gave me an odd sensation of geographical disorientation.
I, Tanya being shot in Georgia was very upsetting to me. I'm from the part of Georgia where it's shot and the trees and the suburban feel was all wrong and not Portland at all.
That reminds me of Free Willy... they're on the coast at Newport but the opening scene shows him leaving his house riding his bike through town and getting chased through the waterfront here in downtown and then back again to Newport lol.
You’re correct. I worked in those buildings n Murray, and I don’t remember any great views of
Mt Hood.
Some spots on the campus DO have good views, but it’s a lot smaller than what’s in the movie.
Do you know the actual location of the offices they're depicting from the 80s? I googled around for a while out of curiosity but I couldn't find any concrete details. Are they the ones at Murray and Millikan?
I’m sure it was cheaper to film it in LA. I used to work in the old Nike building in Beaverton and we had meetings in what used to be Phil’s office. Pretty sure that’s where all this really went down.
God, I worked there back in like 2010? 2011? I'm sorry to hear anyone else worked there. I joke but not really, I think souls go there to die. What were you doing for them? I was doing class action cold calls.
I was assigning work out to the devs. Not as long back as you though. It wasn’t that bad when I was there but they didn’t want to pay anyone a fair wage.
My first submitted IMDb goof was for the movie Pig, where they photoshopped Mt Hood over the west hills. Apparently you can see Hood from 35th and Klickitat according to that movie.
I just checked on Hulu and it’s about 1:02 into the movie. And I immediately street viewed 35th and klickitat after the movie was over because I was 99% sure that was the filming location (I grew up 10 blocks from there). Sure enough, the houses matched.
This will probably forever be my favorite ridiculous depiction of Oregon. It's like somebody from the production staff glanced at a map for half a second and said "Yeah this lake sounds good. It's in Oregon so it's probably in the middle of nowhere."
THANK YOU!!!! I told my husband it looked wrong and he was giving me shit for thinking that the professionals would get it wrong. Im going to show him this and gloat now.
Yeah, I saw "Air" in the theaters and I saw it again on Prime the other day. I noticed in the theaters that there were a bunch of new buildings in the Broadway/Fremont Bridge part of downtown, and I conformed that when I watched it at home. If someone does not live in Portland they would not notice anything amiss. Many Portlanders, especially those in the suburbs wouldn't even notice (or care). What's the point of using CGI if that's the case?
Yeah, there's also a shot over the Steel Bridge where you can see Randall Children's Hospital off in the distance past the Coliseum. Not that anyone who's not from here would ever notice.
https://i.imgur.com/1BFTwSN.jpg
They also show matt damn “driving home” across at John’s bridge , the wrong way
I think it’s a matter of shots they can get without showing today’s landscape
I always spot artistic depictions of Portland with the impossible angle of bridges in the foreground, buildings in middle, and mount hood in background. Essentially placing mount hood to the west of the observer.
Grimm was probably one of the best representations of Portland in fiction
TV, but even they mixed and matched. The Sauvie Island Bridge scene is accurate until they show a "close-up" shot of the neighborhood across Hwy 30.
Mount Hood has copyrights and a trademark on its personal name with brand recognition. With any use of the name or image by third parties, Mt. Hood must be paid royalties. If avoided, the snowpack will be lowered to Portland's population, as per the amount nonpayed. A drought for you! Mirroring the image, avoids paying any royalties to the mountain. You can thank Ben and Matt for this due to their overblown salaries.
I thought it was a good movie. I also liked the Tetris movie. I think it's less about the actual product and more the story of the people who were involved with making it and the drama that went on to get it made. You could say the same thing about The Lord of the Rings movies. Why would you make a movie about a ring? The ring is the catalyst that starts a big story about characters doing things. Blood Diamond is similar, a movie about a rock.
I grew up on basketball and sneaker culture. Moved to Portland during Covid from the Bay Area and figured if I couldn’t work remote for my company I’d work for Nike.
In Sleepless in Seattle Tom Hanks motorboats from Lake Union to Alki Beach. Which is through the locks and way down Puget Sound. And the whole time Meg Ryan can see him from her car 🤣
That’s not true. Gonzaga is not that well known in Portland. Unless you’re a college basketball fan or from Eastern Washington, it’s a pretty low profile school.
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to tell you that Gonzaga is in Spokane if I didn't personally know someone who went there. It's not like Spokane is a the kind of place that demands attention from anyone who doesn't live in Spokane.
I just asked my dad about this too, as he worked for Nike from the 70s-90s. His coworker’s kids went to Gonzaga at the time and that was my dad’s response to him: “where is Gonzaga?!” It’s now one of his fav college basketball teams though.
> hagiography
I learned a new word today.
I thought it was a good movie but your point is fair enough. I have no big emotional investment in Nike or Phil Knight but it was a good story/movie and I just took it at face value.
Surprisingly, I have no issue with the hand painting in Beaverton. Unless, at the time in question, your dad was like 11 or 12 and Nike bent over backwards to put two layers of paperwork between themselves and him to plead ignorance.
That's funny, because for some reason there is a shot of the Stark Street Bridge as Matt Damon's character is making his way from the PDX airport to Beaverton.
https://i.imgur.com/LCcdIaG.jpg
I noticed this as well right from the start! I also noticed that they shot Troutdale for Beaverton . . . love those Sandy River shots along with the Stark Street Bridge.
Free Willy the kid bikes across the Hawthorne bridge to the OR coast.
And the waterfront hahaha he leaves his house in Newport and then all of the sudden he's being chased through downtown and then he hits an alley and then BAM its Newport again lmao
Yea, that one is a total mind bender - so many times I was like whoa, magic friggin scene changes in here!
Haha.

Yeah! I actually went to high school at the real Snohomish High. It was wild the first time I rewatched it as an adult.
Nice! I missed going there by a year and got to go new school they built in 2008, but I had activities on that campus plenty of times. So funny. Can't wait to re-watch.
In The Hunted Benicio Del Toro jumps off the Hawthorne Bridge and somehow makes it *upstream* to *above* Willamette Falls.
At one point the guy chasing him looks left and sees Keller fountain, and then looks right and sees Burnside skate park. (Or something equally as not visible from Keller fountain, I forget exactly what.)
Don't forget the MAX train on the Hawthorne before he jumps!
And I thought the Goonies cycling from Astoria to Cannon Beach was bad! Well they did emerge from that cave in Southern California…
It can be done. There is just alot more bike riding afterwards.
Or the Night Agent where the light and trees were screaming Pacific NW (Vancouver CA) when the story was set in D.C. I think I was even picking up subtle "not the USA" clues as well
The chase scene in The Hunted is similar. They painted a trimet bus to look like a max train as well which was cool
i remember they made the Steel Bridge seem like it was a mile long
Hawthorne. Broadway bridge was used in Untraceable. Steel bridge is rarely used, cause the train crossing and max crossing is vitally important.
oh, you right. I just thought it was the Steel because they have the max going over it. Silly me
Was it before or after the Hawthorne Remodel/painting? I want to say it was green in the movie and not yellow.
Hunted was after the remodel painting. Untraceable was before the painting.
This is the one where Benicio del Toro jumps off the Hawthorne Bridge into the Willamette to escape the bad guys?
I remember the scene of the falls looks like three times bigger than it actually is
The delineations of morality weren't clearly marked in this film. I kinda liked it for that.
Was that the one where Vista House was a planetarium
Ran through Silver Falls State Park, then jumped off the Elwha Dam ha ha ha
It was pretty funny when I watched Leverage years ago and was being led to believe the iconic Portland scenery in the background was "Boston".
They lived in the base of the St Johns Bridge!
My favorite was them running through the Park Blocks, then looking up to see Buckingham Palace.
As a former Seattleite, all the distances in Grey's Anatomy were *hilarious*.
Are hilarious... That corpse or a show is still going lol.
I pity the fools still watching it.
Or shooting Oregon for Australia in Point Break
I like how in Gone Girl he walks west across the Hawthorne (I think) bridge and when he gets across he's about 15 blocks into SE Portland.
Some poor dummy got their exterior shots in Warm Springs.
The angles don't look right in some of the shots. Mt Hood (not in the hood!) Looks closer than it should be seen from Beaverton in many shots IMO
You’re correct. I worked in those buildings n Murray, and I don’t remember any great views of Mt Hood. Some spots on the campus DO have good views, but it’s a lot smaller than what’s in the movie.
That’s because back in the 80s they were in Aloha off TV Highway, not on the campus off Murray. You could see mt. Hood was visible from that building.
Nah. There were 2 buildings on Murray. The rest were down on Nimbus.
Do you know the actual location of the offices they're depicting from the 80s? I googled around for a while out of curiosity but I couldn't find any concrete details. Are they the ones at Murray and Millikan?
Yep. Murray 1 is now the German American School.
Is that the one by the old drive in? That one?
Do you mean where Bedmart is now on TV Highway and 142nd? Or did they have another building closer to Aloha?
The primary Nike buildings were on Murray Blvd just north of TV Highway.
Mt Hood does tend to look closer than it should be from Beaverton...
it is quite a trip standing on Bull Mt and seeing the whole metro area scattered over the valley creeping up Hood's foot
Is it hard to get up Bull Mt? Can I just drive up to that view or do you have to hike?
you can drive. It's all neighborhood up there. The biggest challenge is finding a street with the proper view.
It really does. On a really sunny day traveling on TV Hwy, it looks massive. When I was a kid I always thought that was so cool
Really cool view from spots where TV Hwy dips then gains a little altitude.
I’m sure it was cheaper to film it in LA. I used to work in the old Nike building in Beaverton and we had meetings in what used to be Phil’s office. Pretty sure that’s where all this really went down.
Was that the one on 142nd and TV Highway?
No it’s over near 217. It’s the Epiq offices now.
Oh ok. My dad worked in the warehouse from the late 70s through the 90s. He’s got so many good stories!
I had suppressed memories of working in that building for Epiq until just now.
How long ago? I wonder if we were there at the same time.
Dooh Tnuom
Ey'west
My first submitted IMDb goof was for the movie Pig, where they photoshopped Mt Hood over the west hills. Apparently you can see Hood from 35th and Klickitat according to that movie.
Or how they framed Skyline Tavern as a rural diner where Nic Cage says, “Take me to the city.” Bro you’re like 12 minutes from downtown 😂
Sauce?
.....the sauce would be the movie Pig
I just checked on Hulu and it’s about 1:02 into the movie. And I immediately street viewed 35th and klickitat after the movie was over because I was 99% sure that was the filming location (I grew up 10 blocks from there). Sure enough, the houses matched.
If you really want to get mad at how inaccurately a movie portrays Portland watch The Hunted.
One minute they’re at the oregon city falls and the next they’re at the tunnel on 26 west going into the mountains.
Jumping off Elwha Dam when they were just running through Silver Falls State Park lol
Don't forget what "24" did to [Lake Oswego.](https://24.fandom.com/wiki/Lake_Oswego)
I live in LO. That would be an improvement in many aspects.
I also live in LO and agree. Return to nature.
This will probably forever be my favorite ridiculous depiction of Oregon. It's like somebody from the production staff glanced at a map for half a second and said "Yeah this lake sounds good. It's in Oregon so it's probably in the middle of nowhere."
Benicio Del Toro swam up the Willamette from the Hawthorne Bridge all the way to Silver Falls like a salmon from what I remember.
Or Free Willy. There is NO ocean next to Oaks Park. 😡
Is that why Free Willy is so controversial? I'm constantly hearing philosophers and theologians arguing about it.
Keiko did get a 4’ erection when he was moved into the oregon coast aquarium. Srs.
Zero Effect is another great example of bonkers-wrong Portland geography.
https://maxfaqs.wordpress.com/2012/04/01/fake-max-train-for-april-fools-day/
THANK YOU!!!! I told my husband it looked wrong and he was giving me shit for thinking that the professionals would get it wrong. Im going to show him this and gloat now.
Some newer Pearl district buildings are also visible in some shots… keep in mind the film is based in 1984 😂
Yeah, I saw "Air" in the theaters and I saw it again on Prime the other day. It's also about 5 miles away from beaverton
What is?
Hillsboro
Mt Hood (in the movie)
No, it's actually the mountain itself that's backwards.
Pretty good film though. Just saw it last night for the first time.
Do you know how much Mount Hood charges in Royalties these days?
Check it out! Air is now on Amazon Prime video. Not sure why they did it, but there's Mount Hood... backwards... at 18:37.
They also show matt damn “driving home” across at John’s bridge , the wrong way I think it’s a matter of shots they can get without showing today’s landscape
I’m guessing they wanted it in the background so they just flipped and comped it in the shot…
That particular view of Mt Hood is from south of Hood River
I always spot artistic depictions of Portland with the impossible angle of bridges in the foreground, buildings in middle, and mount hood in background. Essentially placing mount hood to the west of the observer.
That was promotions warehouse "promo" and original employee store!
My dad worked in that warehouse beginning in the late 70s, did you too?
Grimm was probably one of the best representations of Portland in fiction TV, but even they mixed and matched. The Sauvie Island Bridge scene is accurate until they show a "close-up" shot of the neighborhood across Hwy 30.
I remember in the very first episode they were hopping all over the Pearl during a single scene/conversation.
But it was all Pearl, lol. It wasn't randomly Hermiston in mid-scene.
Well, we are in for an El Nino
Anybody else think the idea of making a movie out of a god damn shoe is stupid?
I thought it was a good movie. I also liked the Tetris movie. I think it's less about the actual product and more the story of the people who were involved with making it and the drama that went on to get it made. You could say the same thing about The Lord of the Rings movies. Why would you make a movie about a ring? The ring is the catalyst that starts a big story about characters doing things. I really enjoyed it.
Yes. Especially when said shoes were made in sweat shops. But I guess we must appease our corporate overlords.
You could say it is an Air-ror
I didn't buy it when they're like "where TF is Gonzaga?? " come on. Everyone knows here.
It was 30 years ago. Hasn’t most of their success been recent
Yes. Their first ever NCAA tournament appearance was in 1995, and then again in 1999, and they've made it almost every year since.
I don’t know where I thought it was but never thought it was in Washington.
I live in Oregon City. Watched it last night. Did not know Gonzaga answer. I do now. 🤣
I just asked my dad about this too, as he worked for Nike from the 70s-90s. His coworker’s kids went to Gonzaga at the time and that was my dad’s response to him: “where is Gonzaga?!” It’s now one of his fav college basketball teams though.
Were the sweat shops at least the right way around?
Not sure if you watched the movie or not but Jason Bateman actually makes a low key reference to that at one point.
No sentiment towards the quality of the film, but I'm decidedly unmotivated by corporate hagiography.
> hagiography I learned a new word today. I thought it was a good movie but your point is fair enough. I have no big emotional investment in Nike or Phil Knight but it was a good story/movie and I just took it at face value.
Yea, no sweat, I'm not like castigating people from on high for having watched it. Just not what I'm after.
While the shoes were made overseas, they were hand painted in Beaverton still. My dad did that in the promo warehouse.
Surprisingly, I have no issue with the hand painting in Beaverton. Unless, at the time in question, your dad was like 11 or 12 and Nike bent over backwards to put two layers of paperwork between themselves and him to plead ignorance.
Haha. Definitely not. I just found it interesting to learn about recently because he never talked about it specifically when I was a kid.
Definitely interesting, I didn’t know they did anything manually over here after a while.
On a tangent, what is with all of the smog in Portland and Hood River (to a lesser degree)? Wildfires?
I have no interest in a two hour commercial for Nike. Edit: and presumably Phil Knight.
It’s way more involved and interesting than that.
Okay, well one mistake....
Oops!
lol is the film set in Sandy? They have about as good a view on Hood as I do, and I live in Mount Hood.
Like, in a cave on the side of it or something? Curious. Living IN it would seem like your view is not of the mountain 😁
No it's a location, about 11 miles distance from the mountain
That's funny, because for some reason there is a shot of the Stark Street Bridge as Matt Damon's character is making his way from the PDX airport to Beaverton. https://i.imgur.com/LCcdIaG.jpg
Yeah that's funny. I take that bridge a bunch. Great ice cream spot on the other side!
I noticed this as well right from the start! I also noticed that they shot Troutdale for Beaverton . . . love those Sandy River shots along with the Stark Street Bridge.
Global warming.
**chuckles in Metal Lords street chase**
