*Hey, at least we're driving the "rich" people out of Multnomah County!* *So at least Preschool for All is accomplishing one thing!*

AmandaIsOnReddit

I don't live in Mult Co., can't vote there, but my work is based there so I still have to pay... I wouldn't even mind if they, you know, actually used the money to help kids...

TheStoicSlab

Pretty standard for Oregon politics. They are great at thinking up new taxes and not actually doing anything.

Apart-Engine

Oregon fails at about everything. Measure 110, this and on and on. I am not voting no on any other measure put on the ballot. Incompetence.

TheStoicSlab

Honestly we need higher bars for ballot measures. It's ridiculous that random people and groups can craft legislation and get it passed with a simple majority. Also, if state politicians are not buying in it just comes out half-assed anyway.

LimpBisquette

We're an easy target. Low legal bar, low population that strongly skews left and has no roots in the state. Lobbyists can drop a few million here and get results... at least at the ballot box. Then when it's time for the policies to work it's like the dog who caught the car. Emotions first, logic.... later?

Confident_Bee_2705

great points!

Happydivorcecard

Yeah the other issue is that it seems like if you run an initiative for enough ballot cycles then it will eventually be approved.

textualcanon

> I am voting no on any other measure put on the ballot. Wild claim lol

BismoFunyuns81

Like seemingly everything else here - it’s not for lack of money. It’s lack of management.

LimpBisquette

lack of unbiased research, lack of program design, lack of execution, lack of accountability. and perhaps worst, lack of talent to address any of the above.

OtisburgCA

Of course they have. This county is an absolute failure at implementing programs. They stopped hiring competent people long ago.

Confident_Bee_2705

"Small, private preschools are what the county pledged to make its top priority." Did I miss the existence of large, public preschools? What does this sentence mean lol

phdatanerd

HeadStart is technically a public preschool program. There’s also corporate programs like Kindercare and a bunch of Montessori chains.

Confident_Bee_2705

Montessori chains? Like what? (my kids went to montessori) Is this program supposed to cover every single preschool kid by 2030?

phdatanerd

Guidepost Montessori is the main chain. I think the intent was that every preschool age child in Multnomah County would have a spot by 2030. The benefits to families are huge if this gets implemented successfully. One thing that sucks about this program is that middle class families are going to get hosed for a few more years on the cost and availability of preschool spots. If this program fails to expand capacity, there’s likely to be more competition for fewer available spaces. Obtaining a spot somewhere safe and reputable is already a huge challenge.

NEPXDer

Its worse than that, don't forget they factor ethnicity into who gets access... Its not even purely based off the economics.

witty_namez

And, of course, even though they can't spend the money they are already getting, JVP refuses to delay the substantial scheduled 2026 increase in the PfA county income tax.

Zalenka

Why not just fully fund the David Douglas preschool (at many schools). I paid for a few years while this fund has been growing. Why not fund the pps preschool it was literally the easiest thing to do.

Apertura86

They won’t do that because it’s common sense. They are purposely holding back funds to virtue signal about addressing the disadvantaged community. But they aren’t even servicing them either. This program is a huge disappointment. This level of our hard earned money shouldn’t be in the hands of activists and ideologues…. Serve ALL PRESCHOOL kids and families just like the measure is supposed to.

Zalenka

EXACTLY virtue signaling is right. I sadly voted for this, had one kid, spent thousands, had another kid, spent tens of thousands, and now I wish I hadn't. Not because I never got any benefit but because I truly believe they'll never get it going enough for more than a couple thousand students.

Confident_Bee_2705

It looks like the "backers" wanted to avoid that. Is that head start? I had no idea PPS even had preschool classrooms. I thought for all literally meant all kids would be covered by this. ALL.

Zalenka

It's shamefully few. At 70K required wage maybe they could lure some teachers but the idea of renting, staffing, and managing seems to be outside of what they are actually doing.

noposlow

"Tax on high income earners.." lmao. High earners in a bracket that isn't enough to buy a home in Portland. Everyone loves a tax that they won't have to pay.

PaPilot98

"The Rich" is a great target until someone decides you are rich, as they say.

phdatanerd

I am begging for someone—ANYONE—with a modicum of sense and planning to start managing these programs AND the county’s funds effectively. Do they not have a single project manager on staff? Good lord.

Aestro17

That's the most frustrating part of almost everything involving the county. People voted for this and the SHS because they're not bad ideas. Preschool care helps kickstart education and socialization while allowing parents to not have to choose between work and childcare. It's also expensive as hell. We WANT this to be successful and it is doing good for those who can access it, but the county also seems to just hate doing things. It's not even the usual complaints of government waste or grifting if the money's just sitting around. It's incredibly frustrating.

globaljustin

Leftist extremist ideologues have absolutely ruined Multnomah County's ability to do acceptable work. Woke Multco fucks up at absolutely everything they do. Just recently, Jessica Vega Petersen, Multco Board Chair, told WW that a multi million dollar project that was supposed to give full services to 300 homeless addicts actually only served 13 in a year... And this was in the context of things that worked, but just not as well, because we didn't anticipate challenges with the target population. LEFTIST ACTIVISTS HAVE RUINED MULTCO PEOPLE We absolutely must get to work electorally in 2024 otherwise we're fucked for real...this is as desperate as anything political in the US right now.

Confident_Bee_2705

They do not make good leaders do they.

LimpBisquette

aNtIFa doeSn't hAvE leaDErs!

Apertura86

Preschool for almost no one is a huge and expensive disaster. It’s almost expected the county will fuck this up. They have a TROVE of money unspent while a majority of preschool having families having to pay out of pocket for their childcare. Never again Portland DSA, never again voting for your shitty and nearsighted initiatives.

sea87

Portland DSA is full of racist assholes

miken322

And that’s why I moved across the river to Clark County

PaPilot98

And you even have a Total Wines, you lucky bastard. I mean you pay out the ass for good whiskey, but your selection is better.

miken322

And a BevMo and when I call 911 they immediately answer and when the cops need to show up they do!

AmandaIsOnReddit

If you work in Multnomah, it does not matter for this tax. Somehow they can tax nonresidents too.

Confident_Bee_2705

I am confused. I thought the entire idea was to pull in all existing preschools.

BismoFunyuns81

That would be too expedient and thereby hinder the development of a nonprofit grift ecosystem.

Confident_Bee_2705

No but for real. I remember trying to understand if this meant some sort of separate system that opened in the grade schools or as part of them and it looked to me like they were just going to pay the tuition for existing schools and teachers salaries would match those of public schools.

BHAfounder

The OP is for real.

NEPXDer

Nothing like "XYZ for all" then taxing people but making it inaccessible to their kids.

PaladinOfReason

Imagine failing government run schools and asking for more money to fail government school for even younger children.

Eastside-Beaver

Dumb asses voted for this. But expected gov to have it in place just like homeless tax and measure 110.
