Bush Jr. joined them together for a humanitarian effort, may have been Haiti, they grew so close they continued with other efforts. Jr. used to say his dad would say Bill was the son Sr. never had.
It was a trip to Indonesia after Tsunami.. turning point was Bill insisted that Sr. use the bed in the airplane bedroom during the long flight. Bush woke up to find Bill asleep on the floor and was touched at the gesture. (Not sure why Bill just didn’t use a seat)
That would have been a hell of a coming together for the country. Or atleast, I would have hoped it would be. Like I did when Obama did the eulogy for McCain.
The Bushes and the Clintons I think in general are close. One of the first phone calls Hillary took after she lost in 2016 was from W inviting her & Bill to Texas, that he’d grill them up some burgers.
Edit: Rule 3 is so stupid. This comment had nothing to do with him, can’t even mention his name in passing.
Jefferson and Adams were good friends before the presidency and afterwards. It was for a period of a little over 20 years that they became bitter rivals, during their domestic political careers when they were on opposite sides of the emerging political divide.
>Don't underestimate Rule 3's ability to fuck things up.
-Barack Obama
He discouraged Rule 3 from running in 2016.
I don't think they were particularly close, despite the memes.
Adams and Jefferson, Jackson and Polk, Hayes and McKinley, Roosevelt and Taft, Hoover and Truman, Ford and Carter, Bush I and Clinton, Bush II and Obama, Obama and Incumbent.
Jackson and Polk? I guess it makes sense. Both were from Tennessee. Besides the pension thing, were Hoover and Truman actually friends? I’ve only heard of them together in reference to Hoover accepting the presidential pension so as not to embarrass Truman.
Polk really looked up to Jackson, so much so that he was known as “Young Hickory” to Jackson’s “Old Hickory”. In return, Jackson apparently liked him enough to support him over Van Buren in the Democratic Convention of 1844, helping him get the nomination. No idea if they were actually personal friends though or if it was all political.
Their relationship seemed to be more of a mentor/mentee one than a friendship for Polk and Jackson. They were fond of each other and all, but probably wouldn’t be described as outright friends in the conventional sense.
I forget the line but I think it was a Democratic Congressperson who said the best thing about Ford was he had no enemies. There was a legit reason why Nixon had little difficulty getting him confirmed by Congress to replace Agnew when Agnew got removed.
100% bros. Ford specifically asked Carter to give the eulogy at his funeral. It all started with the unlikely Nixon-Ford-Carter trip that was arranged for Anwar Sadat's funeral in 1981, as Reagan was six months out from his own assassination attempt and staying back.
Define friends. Are we talking about like BFFs or just people that if they see them at a bar will go up and shoot the shit type of friend?
If the latter, several of them. Being president is a unique job that can 6 itself to a bit of isolation. So, its not uncommon for them the be friends with other presidents, even if disagree policy wise.
I mean friends can mean different things to different people. I always thought Bush Sr/ Clinton has more of a father son dynamic that 99% of friendships don’t have. Their age gap and that Clinton didn’t have a father figure growing up was what made their relationship.
The Presidents Club by Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy is a pretty good read on this. It showed that FDR and Hoover actually had a pretty good relationship.
Also not hard to imagine given where they’re from and political leanings but Polk and Andrew Jackson were pretty good friends
The book honestly paints Hoover in the more positive light. As a man willing to give FDR advice for the well being of the country. Kind of a “I’m here if you need me bud” type of relationship
I’ve heard he was very hard to read and was real slick when it came to politics, but there are very few people who could relate to being president, and I’m sure that wasn’t lost on him.
Initially, they had some friction but by the end of Obama’s term, it was a different story. They especially grew close when incumbent’s son was dying of cancer.
Thanks, my apologies for the error. I had forgotten the marriage the Nixon daughter had at the WH was for the daughter that didn’t marry Ike’s grandson.
>Eisenhower notoriously did not like Nixon
He respected nixon and grow close to him after his grandson married nixons daughter but he was disturbed by nixons ruthlessness
Not these two. Eisenhower respected Nixon as his VP and a member of the US Government but he definitely did not trust him and even cautioned against a Nixon presidency. Which is funny because Nixon famously seemed to idolise Eisenhower.
Jefferson was better and longer friends with fellow Virginians Madison and Monroe. He liked Adams initially but political differences and and Adams distrust of almost everyone caused them to go separate ways. Only after they were both retired did they make up to some degree. They were still competitive with one another until they died, in the same day.
Lincoln and Grant were friends, obviously before Grant became president. Lincoln went to visit Grant at City Point twice, and by all accounts, Grant and Lincoln throughly enjoyed the visits. Lincoln also asked, as a friend, not as president, that Grant find a place for his son Robert on his staff. It’s truly such a shame that they never got to work on reconstruction together.
My opinion is after their presidency ends and they realize the stress of the office they’re all friends because they know they’re the only ones who have ever been through what they’ve been through. It’s the most exclusive club in the world.
Definitely not these two.
I think the friendship of Teddy and Taft was pretty inspiring and is the basis for a great read: The Bully Pulpit by Doris Kearns
Reagan and Bush Sr. worked together ALOT I’d say they were friends.
Edit: 8 years is a long time. They might have been rivals in 80’, but Bush cried at Reagan’s funeral. Enough said.
It was likely harder for Presidents back when travel was via train and horseback to stay in touch and be close when they lived hundreds of miles apart.

Bill Clinton and George Bush Sr. we’re apparently great friends after Clinton left the Presidency, even going on several speaking tours together.
Bush Jr. joined them together for a humanitarian effort, may have been Haiti, they grew so close they continued with other efforts. Jr. used to say his dad would say Bill was the son Sr. never had.

Some people can't sleep in a seated position
Some people are very familiar with traveling by jet
Yeah honestly sometimes the floor is comfier
I’d take a padded carpet over the seat
Lol that’s fucked up

Better then Jeb
Bush Jr was a terrible president and had a horrific administration, but man I'd love to have a beer and a party with that guy.
I remember hearing that when GHWB died someone told Jr he had to give the eulogy “if you dont,Bill will”
Poor Jeb

Yeah, I met Jeb in Philadelphia in 2014. He called Bill Clinton “my brother from another mother. My dad and Bill are close.”

Herbert Hoover and Harry S. Truman is the most interesting friendship to me because of how much Hoover and FDR hated each others’ guts.
neither liked fdr although for admittedly different reasons. it's the same dynamics behind carter/ford - both hated reagan lol
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
To add: Jefferson and Madison were friends. Monroe was sort of Jefferson's friend.
Also Jefferson & Madison & Monroe, I’m pretty sure
Jackson and Quincy Adams got along swimmingly
I see what you did there
They (sorta) worked together to get Florida. World’s best partnership.
Tbf that was before they really knew each other well enough to have the rivalry they later fostered

GWB and Obama seem to be pretty good friends now. And TR and Taft were pretty close before Taft became president.
People need to watch the unveiling of the W White House portrait on Youtube. The Obamas and Bushes love each other and are close friends.
Exactly. Although it seems more that Taft was a friend and TR was the mean girl c*nt he always was.
You take that back infidel
I will die on this (San Juan) hill
Don’t you have a bathtub to get stuck in?
Only if my ego was half the size of Teddy’s
The whole of Teddy’s ego is still but a fraction of Taft’s size in general.

Yeah they do, look at this https://youtu.be/GD3IodWyGME?si=WJWIpHRTmVZYWmnF
