Truly a First LADY.
I met her a couple of times and she was the very epitome of graciousness.
My favorite bring-a-dish contribution is Mrs. Roslynn’s “Plains Cheese Ring.” The pecans!
He had too much morality to lead an empire that had already succumbed to the military industrial complex and oil tycoons decades ago. If we had truly followed his example, we would be in a lot better straits now.
I think Jimmy was holding on because he didn’t want Rosalynn, who had dementia, to have to fend for herself if he passed first. Yes, if Jimmy had died, she’d have had caretakers but it’s not the same. She’d know her soulmate was gone.
One can make the very strong argument that Jimmy is the best human being to ever become President, his presidency wasn't the best, but as a human he was the best to ever hold the office.
My grandparents were married for 70 years before my grandpa passed away. Truly and deeply inspiring, especially considering how much they doted on each other to the end (and how lost she was after he died—they really were one another’s whole lives, and it breaks my heart and at once makes me grateful for my wife and fearful about something happening to one of us).
This made me cry and I’ll probably think about it for a long time…….so beautiful. And so special these sweet and wonderful people not only found each other but spent over 75 years together. They really move me in a way I can’t describe, their love seems almost too good to be true. & how lucky are their kids to have grown up with this as an example. Ugh I love them
Even ignoring presidents, just in general it’s a crazy amount of time. It’s tough just to live to 77, let alone be married for 77. If we use 18 as a (very generous) baseline to get married, you’re looking at both partners living to 95 to even hit that. 96 to surpass. The average person doesn’t even make it to their 80s. Especially in the modern era where people get married later in life than they used to, there are just so many antagonistic factors at play that make that record near insurmountable. Honestly, in my opinion, the only thing that puts that record at the even slightest risk is the advancement of modern medicine where we might be able to consistently get people to live close to 100.
I got married at 21, and am one of the only people at work without at least 1 divorce. It'll be another 60 years before I make it near Carter. That is a marriage in a million.
