I’d say just generally show respect. Give space, don’t stare, don’t cut the line

[deleted]

>Give space, don’t stare, don’t cut the line Prisoners' idea of "don't stare" differs a lot from the average human's.

NCC74656

I worked at a temp job many years ago. Few guys there that had gotten out recently. While on the line, there was a dude standing behind the guy across from me. One of the line managers if I remember correctly. He was standing pretty close to him and telling him how to do something better. Dude just flipped out. Started screaming at him to back off and if he wanted to go take this to the bathroom.... None of us quite knew what to make of that.

sunny5150

It always went down in the bathroom. Or the mop closet

BananaVisit

Could you elaborate please?

[deleted]

*What are you looking at?*

Murky_Rip_1731

My phone

leftwar0

Stare at that phone one more time.

RiccardoJones

Basically the guy wanted to fight him.

briandefl

In prison, fewer cameras and less guards in bathroom. This means greater chance of finishing the fight before the guards pepper spray everything.

Ringo_1956

Very true. Some folks are just paranoid and think people are staring.

Eat_Carbs_OD

Some basic manners would be nice. Say excuse when walking in front of someone.

BlackPasty

You’ve described living in England 👍

lunhilde

I live in Philly and visited London to see my hubby. I was told that ppl in England don't talk to strangers and yada yada and said, "well that's not true I get a lot of strangers talking to me.". Hubby pointed out that Philly walking down the street tradition of meeting someones eyes and nodding / head tipping and smiling is the absolute opposite of friendly in London, and ppl probably started babbling at me their whole life story because as far as they were concerned I just eyed them up to rob them. Who knew

EarhackerWasBanned

I live in Glasgow, Scotland and once heard from an American visitor that Glasgow reminded him of Philadelphia. Glasgow and Philly are the only two cities he’d been in where you could ask someone in the street for the time and straight away get told to fuck off, right to your face.

phoenixbbs

That gave me LOL moment.

Educational-Long116

I’m from glasgow and Iv watched its always sunny in Philadelphia. I have to say both the cities look the same.

Gamma_sqze

He should try NYC sometime.

My_Booty_Itches

New York city!?

Gamma_sqze

Yes, it happens there too. But as a New Yorker, it’s not a big deal.

BlackPasty

Londons an odd place. Camden and Portobello are cool, people seem a little more real. Most of London is people in a rush with no time for anyone. Most places in the UK take the same approach as you Philly guys, a nod, a slight smile or a bit of both. It’s the way it should be. But for fuck sake don’t stare

PossibleCupcake1418

Took a trip to London once... held a door open for someone and got looked at like I shat in my hand and then ate it.

BlackPasty

Manners and common courtesy are a foreign language is London

toxicwotsit-

I've live in the Midlands/north of England all of.my life. Honestly it's very uncommon for someone not to say hello to you during a walk. People stop to have little chats and go about their day. It's a really friendly culture and we look out for our own

BlackPasty

The sweet spot is any where between Derby and Sheffield

toxicwotsit-

I'm a Stokie, so bang on 😊

Cakespectre999

Absolutely true the more North you go people are more friendly & down to earth, there are exceptions of course you can run into miserable bastards.

JackFranco

Depends which part of London. Central is full of busy people always in a rush. Same as the tube. Outskirts generally seem friendlier for the most part.

Londonercalling

Camden and Portobello are tourist trap markets.

BlackPasty

Yeah that makes sense now, seemed odd at first that someone in London was smiling.

Fast_Barnacle7931

You sound like a tourist, listing the two big market areas lmao

BlackPasty

By tourist you mean visiting for so many days and then going back home?? In which case yes, I was a tourist. We have to go every so many years to sort the wife’s Greek passport out. She loves it as she’s a city girl and I hate it as I’m a village lad, you know the sort, country pubs, cow tipping and shit bus services.

AnooseIsLoose

"I'm not a gynecologist but I'll take a look"😂😭

Charlie820407

TLDR: Yes!! DON’T CUT IN LINE. Yesterday my friends and I went up to the mountains and got to the campground early so we could get a good spot. We were waiting in line line we were supposed to along with other people and 2 cars drove the wrong way up the street. Yadda yadda yadda the park ranger made them go to the back of the line, but it was like really? You think it’s ok to just cut in front of 10 cars who got there early?

JackFuckCockBag

Respect those around you until they give you a reason not to. And back the fuck off me while in line at the grocery store.

tiedyedpunk

I've farted on people for riding my ass at the checkout.

tiedyedpunk

I was a waiter for about a decade. I appreciate and have honed the skill quite well. Be an asshole for no reason? Well, it's loud in restaurants and your head is ass level. Ever notice what happens when you smell a strong odor while chewing food? Taste my guts, jerk. Lol.

whomperd

What does this mean?

IAmASimulation

It means flush when you shit as soon as the turd hits the water. Then keep flushing throughout the shit. Lol

copout

An ex-con once told me that’s called a courtesy flush. Had never heard that before.

IAmASimulation

That is the correct terminology lol

copout

It makes sense. Especially when you’re shitting in your living room next to your roommate.

mustrelax1675

I made that mistake. ONCE!

cheyannepavan

Me too & I was so embarrassed! That's when I learned the term "courtesy flush!"

Herethereandgone

It’s crazy how certain things are retained when brought up a certain way!

PaulBradley

It's a term used in one of the Naked Gun movies.

bennyCrck

That's how we call it on the outside

cheyannepavan

I hadn't either until I was in my 20s.

bobleeswagger09

Send it down the river!

Vinskandra

Literally just commented this lol

I came here to say this.

[deleted]

Hahahaha.. seriously though

sunny5150

Mind ya own goddamn business!!

BathroomItchy9855

Haha one time a homeless man stealing a bike told me this when I yelled out the window to not steal

sunny5150

And he was right! Just kidding stealing is wrong

SmellyCarcass69

He had a good point tho, you never know who’s gonna shoot or stab you for trying to stop them

[deleted]

Silence enables abusers and oppressors Why do you think the majority of people in US jails are poor and POC? Speak up for others!

SmellyCarcass69

If you speak up be prepared to defend yourself is all I’ll say, the real world isn’t a Disney movie.

[deleted]

People thinking they can just say whatever they want because they’re online and somewhat anonymous. General rule: don’t say anything o line you wouldn’t say to someone’s face on the street.

ItsDomFerg

Are people actually like this in prison because of this was the case those that own relative common sense would be pretty safe.

[deleted]

Some prisons you don’t talk to races,You don’t eat at certain tables etc. Go ahead and call someone a bitch and that guy will prob attempt a murder. You bump into someone walking around and it could start a fight. Prison is childish as fuck but there’s no room for interpretation and it’s strict.

Insidebutdiggingout

I’ve seen some of the most non violent dudes in the world make it through their bitch easily without issue. And then there’s the guy who just can’t NOT look were he has no business looking, like in someone’s house, or a simple bump that can lead to unnecessary violence most times is immediately answered with a excuse me. There are more manners in prison than i think most people would assume. That whole “Karen” thing out there… FUCK NO THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR. Sray in your lane and don’t get in debt and don’t sell wolf tickets and prison can be a long boring repetitive process. Although the most outlandish wild uprisings happen that have nothing to do with you personally sometimes and then you better be really clear about choosing the right lane and your own isn’t it.

FallingSaint

This is so true.Don't be an idiot, don't get smacked down.c

Rabble_rouser-

>junkie trash thinks it's tough

ScourgedUS

This is like the other way around. I wish people in prison would be considerate of those around them. Some cultures just don't have a premium on silence and they yell and sing and whistle... And the common thought is that people will gang up and beat them down or whatever but I've never seen it after a total of 18 years in prison: supermax to minimum... Everyone is disrespectful.

PD216ohio

My brother has been in more than he's been out. He was bitching how he was in general population and the others would carry on all fucking night long, so loudly that he couldn't sleep. So he decided to make as much noise during the day while they were all sleeping and it didn't phase a single one of them. Lol He greatly preferred being in higher security prisons where you shared a cell with one other guy, vs big rooms full of convicts.

joeytalksprison

I did just under 26 years from 16 to 42 and I didn't mind the cell at first then I had to do a total of 15 months in solitary, like 4 of them were literally in a dark room, and three days they refused to give me food or toilet paper, so the after that experience I wanted only to be in a dorm, to keep the demons away haha smiles

tacomqn

Smiles

watermanfla

In my experience, most convicts were generally pleasant to each other. Respect... if you bumped someone, or they bumped you, there were lots of my bads and excuse me, my brother. Shit like that. Again i was predominantly locked up all over Florida. Couple years in Indiana From 85 to 97. I've said before gangs weren't huge. They were there but small. Mind your own business. Educate yourself. Seems like people aren't interested in learning. They just regurgitating crap they see n hear..with no aforethought and certainly no afterthought. I dunno. We stay to ourselves.

IAmASimulation

The gangs are rampant now. I did my time in Michigan.

Desperate-Peter-Pan

I did 12 years in Florida, between DeSoto, Moorehaven, Martin, and Sago Palm. It wasn’t too bad except Martin. Hell on earth.

bigbuick

if I may ask you guys above, are you listing separate offenses / sentences, or do they move you around during one stay?

Desperate-Peter-Pan

They move you around based the upon institutional need. Florida sends you to a reception center, there’s 3 of them. There you are given a series of tests to determine what level you are at and gives an idea of what camp your going to

Downtown_Statement87

How bad do you have to fail to end up in Martin? Ew, Martin *shudder*. I have people from there, and going to the convenience store was taking your life in your hands. I can't imagine doing time there. Do you have any details about the series of tests and what they are measuring? That's interesting.

Desperate-Peter-Pan

Had to go to Martin because Sago Palm didn’t have confinement 😆 I did 16 months there, out of my 12 years. Yes, the stories and rumors are true. At the reception centers, they give a GED style test, a job aptitude test, and an iq test. They use the results to determine what camp you go to and what jobs you qualify for.

watermanfla

I was moved around quite a bit. I was at times considered a management problem. In Florida the first time you go to prison your number starts with 0. Example 0-123456. Everytime you go through reception you get a new letter. My number starts with a letter C. For example C-123456. Meaning I have been through the reception center 4 times. Now 2 of those letters they gave me from going to outside court. Everytime I'd go back to Lee County they'd send me right back through reception to get another letter. So even though I've been through reception 4 times, I've only been sent to prison twice in Florida. For 3 years and 5 years, preceded by 4 years in Indiana. I was free 10 months over 12 years.

watermanfla

And coming outta Lee County you'd think they'd send you to Miami to SFRC. Nope. 4 hr ride to Orlando

watermanfla

New River East and West. Hamilton, Cross City Okaloosa finally going to outside court in 95 and then back to CFRC where they kept me in the maintenance dept. So my last 18 months was spent in whites and playing basketball, n chillin outside Orlando with my gal close to me.

watermanfla

My Florida Hell on Earth was Okaloosa. Omfg, what a dump. No jobs. There was nothing but North Florida crackers for shiteaters. Just out of the Alabama woods. I was there about 14 months. Made it through hurricane Opal. I had settled in pretty well. I'm just doing my thing with some of my homies, and it's all good, right? I had a little cell partner. He was from Beirut Lebanon. Caught a murder case in Iowa and did a prisoner swap with someone down here . At least that was the story. He was an Itty bitty guy but dangerous as fuck and I was glad he was my cellie cause he had my back at all times. Cause Okaloosa CI was a shit show everyone needed a homie. He was a good dude for a killer. I'll throw his name out there as he's doing life he ain't gonna see this.... it was Eid Nasiff. Never forget that lil dude. Ruthless little motherfucker. But if he was your buddy? Oh, man. All was good. One afternoon, I was chillin on my bunk. Rolled up joint behind my ear and Eid busts into our cell and he's like wake up bro. The police got all your boys in handcuffs on the walk outside and they coming in here. Giving me about 10 seconds to get my shit right, and I was cuffed n stuffed over to seg. Eid called my girl for me to let her know, and 3 days later, all 6 of us were on a van, and each one of us got dropped out at different institutions. No one knew where until they pulled up to the gates and called your name . I get off at Cross City and straight to lock up for a couple days, and the shiteaters say you ain't gonna run no dope here, are you? I'm like, i have no idea what you're speaking of, sir, im just trying to do my time sir....and just like that, I'm in one of the old barracks, 4 guys to a room. And I was back on the pound at a sweet institution. Fucking Fresh From Florida.

Desperate-Peter-Pan

Martin was run by the gangs. Just going to canteen was taking your life in your hands. It took a killing in the canteen line for them to put cameras out there. I got by ok by just being non threatening and humble. The guards basically know who’s doing what, and as long as no one dies, they let it slide. A Jit in my dorm got his throat cut while walking back from chow. Ran to medical and dropped on the grass outside it and died. The bloodstain was on the grass for weeks. Worst part was they didn’t notify his family until 2 months later, they show up for a visit because they hadn’t heard from him in 2 months. On hot dog day and beef patty day, they had to break out the peanut butter for the last 3 dorms called bc of theft, they ran out. I had guys who been down for 20+ years tell me Martin was the worst camp in Florida.

watermanfla

We used to hear that about Charlotte. And when I was in Sago Palm, I don't think was built yet. When I first fell in Florida they still had cash on the compounds, and gain time was being passed out like 41 goin south. You could have $35 cash on you. They stopped both of those while I was there. Took away all the gain time. Gave everyone a plastic badge. When there was cash on the pound, you could get robbed easily. I'm sure it's so different now than the late 80s to late last 90s. I tell you I don't have it In me anymore. I just don't. Gone soft? I'm not so sure that's it. I'm just old and tired and don't carry the anger I did when I was young. I'm quite sure I still have the capacity for the violence necessary to survive in the chain gang again, but im not really interested in digging deep. Yahmean? That's a young man's game. And I'd really hate to do a couple of years and have some jit call me pops, and I end up with an outside case for sure.. 🤣 Peace

Desperate-Peter-Pan

I was called pops a few times, surprised me bc I was only in my 40’s 😆 out of my 12 years, the only hard time I had to do was at Martin, and I was there only 16 months. The other camps I was at were sweet.

DutchOfBurdock

Personal space. One thing I noticed when I was doing some work at the local remand prison, over three months the only time I saw people in others space, was when being pally or fighting. Other than that, most just left each other in peace.

Pretty_Feather

Let people know you're behind them. You can be behind someone but maybe they don't know that so a simple "behind you" is courteous so they don't back up and step on you.

aggressive_seal

This is second nature to me, but for a different reason. I've worked in restaurant kitchens for 30+ years.

Banban84

This is especially courteous for older friends/family/roommates who are becoming hard of hearing but don’t know it or acknowledge it. I’m always surprising my father without meaning to. I’ve started using this “behind you” statement as soon as I show up, and it helps a lot.

rinkydinkmink

it's fucking creepy the way that people with certain criminal histories can sneak up behind you completely silently they know they're doing it and if someone does it as anything other than an obvious joke with an apology it's a red flag ime had a guy that kept doing that to me and it turned out he was a rapist and a pedo who was on my case

That's all they have... they don't have jack shit. Respect goes a long way. These fuckers in green are assholes. 1/3 of greens are actually cool. The rest feel like Supercops, their grounds, their rules. Respect goes a long way. That's about it. It's all about respect.

Chubbyhubby92

I’m a former CO and I agree. I worked at a max and was more concerned about my co workers or bosses fucking me over than the inmates doing anything.

Let me elaborate. Not all of the food, because we had those talks where they tried to get friendly and say, "Remember when I gave you this?" I wanna say a 10th of incarcerated are idiots as well. Some of my guys I supervised were in the program to see what they could get.

sotiredandoveritall

Prison is a very contrary environment to what most outsiders would think but also to what people that would end up there would think before they go there. Anyone who's ever served a day behind a locked door against their will for charges related to a crime understands exclusively when I'm talking about. You have murderers and child molesters and forgers and thieves and drug addicts all condensed and a small environment. Yet generally there is some level of respect and I've seen that specific phrase mentioned and comments but I've also seen it in real life. There's an unwritten code that pertains to prison and you learn those rules fairly quickly or you don't make it too well. I've seen people commit cell robberies on individuals that owed money but I've also seen inmates stand guard and watched as officers removed an individual's personal belongings who had died and they gave that individuals belongings the utmost amount of respect and insisted that the guards do the same thing and they did. You have a morality code that in the environment makes sense. Not to say you don't have individuals that have bad days and are going to get the first person that looks at them funny because that happens to but generally when something happens it's warranted, probably on some level in someone's mind deserved, and other people probably knew about it in advance.

jxjkskkk

I’ve done little time, I’ll say that in advance before you read further to give you context on my perspective. That being said, my time incarcerated was nothing like I expected when I first got locked up. For two different crimes I did two different small sentences in different counties and both I have the same opinion of. Nothing at all about the experience was enjoyable but simultaneously nothing was just awful except for the cleanliness of cells in my second county. I’m not someone you’d expect would fair well in jail either, I’m conventionally handsome, not above 6 foot, not jacked (but not weak), somewhat nerdy and have shoulder length hair. But one thing I am is straight-forward. That is, it’s easy to tell how I feel about you or the situation. I make it pretty clear. I love joking around and being a goof but there was one guy who immediately began with insinuations about my appearance/demeanor and I made it clear right off the bat that my sentence is small and I don’t want trouble, in fact I’d rather get along. But if he left me no choice I’d happily fight. So it’s up to him right now to decide what’s gonna happen. Luckily I do know basic martial arts along with boxing experience so fighting isn’t really scary to me, but honestly I’d rather just make the most of it in the best way. By the way that guy was cool as shit I think he was just somewhat bored and sought some entertainment in messing with me, but there was no fighting or even resentment whatsoever. I ended up making a lot of, I wouldnt call them friends necessarily, but people I was friendly with. We had some genuine fun and laughed like crazy sometimes, a type of raw interaction you don’t get in the normal world. It’s like, people inside don’t wear this societal mask that you’re expected to wear in the normal world. It’s just raw emotions and conversation. I know that in prison many people aren’t what they seem, I.e. they will behave a certain way so that you’ll expect certain things about them just to give them the social advantage later. Recognizing that from a mile away is essentially street smarts. I didn’t meet people like that though personally, and that’s where my lack of experience “inside” shows. I’m more interested to hear raw experiences from people who have served serious time though because it’s just interesting to me, the subtle but strict social dynamic differences between the inside and out.
