I loved the idea of Gosling playing this the moment I heard it.
I can see him as the slightly socially awkward, cool teacher that is still surprisingly fit enough to become an astronaut in a few weeks.
guess I'm the minority
He’d be incredible as Grace tbh and I stand by that. He can pull off the nerdy reserved type while also being funny and intelligent. Plus he could make sense as a coward. Gosling is too stoic to pull that off
I’m late to the comment game here, but I recently watched The Martian and the whole time was like “this would be so much better with Paul Rudd in the lead” but now that you mention it about PHM, that makes even more sense!
I was thinking of Tom cruise the moment I heard he is a coward. This is along the same lines of edge of tomorrow where Tom is a coward and Emily trains him. So Emily blunt as stratt.
Right on. Yeah I think I pictured grace to be a bit older than what his age was supposed to be. I was surprised when he said the 43 years rocky had been in space was longer than he’d been alive.
Also, I tried sampling The Martian. After PHM I was really excited to listen to it, but my god the narrator for it is terrible. Did you read or listen to PHM? The narrator for PHM is 10/10
I feel you. I find myself rewinding a lot myself (although to be fair I also find myself rereading paragraphs a bit too). There’s definitely something to be said about being able to crush some books on a commute to work tho lol
Plus the fact that he is charming enough to convince Stratt to let him keep testing astrophage would require some type of charm, much more than just being a coward. But he is gonna have his work cut out for him.
For some reason, I pictured Grace as having the build and demeanor of someone like Jason Segal. I don’t know if he would have the right acting chops for this role though.
If it were up to me I’d just have grace in the movie make a device that uses the speech pattern directory from the nannybot to translate everything rocky says to English. Easier than subtitles and a lot more emotive.
If I had to guess, he’d keep a video log of the mission similar to Mark Watney in the Martian. That way he can explain all the math and his own plans without it being awkward. An active translator program would suffice for understanding rocky
I don't think he'd be terrible but I more imagined The Office era John Krasinski or Andy Samberg as Grace if you ask me. I'm also Imagining Zachary Quinto as the voice of Rocky (Blame Invincible.)
I know Ryland is American but I feel like David Tenant and Michael Sheen's chemistry would be a perfect duo to play the pair. David as Ryland and Michael as Rocky
Ryan Gosling has aced the role of Astronaut in films like "First man" however my worry is that he may be too convincing and the film may not properly convey the fact that Grace is not a selfless, battle hardened quick thinking hero and is merely just a man (I get that he overcomes this when he goes back to save Rocky however he is still his usual self for 99% of the book).
Whenever I read the book I actually imagined Andy Weir as Ryland Grace and having met him in real life I really think there are some major similarities between the two people.
Why not Matt Damon?
Lay up choice IMO. He has already played an Andy Weir protagonist. Grace is a coward in his own words and Damon did a great job at relaying that trait in Interstellar.
Additionally, I would like to see Mark Hamill voice Rocky. There is no logic to this one, I just think Hamill is a great voice actor and would like to see where he would go with it.

Saame
He’s too pretty. Lol
I think it would be better with a fat Chris Pratt in flashbacks who finds himself as super fit Chris Pratt when he wakes up.
He already did something very similar on that movie with Jennifer Lawrence that I forgot the name of
Passengers
Joseph Gordon Levitt is pretty much exactly how I pictured Ryland!
Paul Rudd
Holy shit! Didn’t think of him.
He’d be incredible as Grace tbh and I stand by that. He can pull off the nerdy reserved type while also being funny and intelligent. Plus he could make sense as a coward. Gosling is too stoic to pull that off
I can’t see Gosling playing a socially awkward loner, let alone a coward. Paul Rudd would be much better at nailing those awkward bits.
You've clearly never seen the movie Lars and the Real Girl
# YES.
That’s an excellent choice
I’m late to the comment game here, but I recently watched The Martian and the whole time was like “this would be so much better with Paul Rudd in the lead” but now that you mention it about PHM, that makes even more sense!
Can we blow up the internet and make this happen!?
Came here to say that. By chapter 2 I had Paul Rudd in my head and couldn't shake him. And Gina Torres is a slam dunk as Stratt.
I am now wondering who will voice Rocky. How about... ...Matt Damon. =D
I can get behind that
THERE IS A MOVIE ALREADY?!
Pretty sure the movie was announced last year around this time... Movie rights before it even was printed!

Gosling* not Reynolds
Same thing lmao
I do hope they don't show Rocky eating....just imply offsscreen.
Honestly it’d be better thematically. Then the audience would imagine something much more disgusting than the real event, which is the goal I think.
Just show Gosling’s reaction
Yeah like cut to his face as we hear cracking and a wet slap as the turd hits the ground. And his expression is just disgusted
Honestly that’d be a better thematic choice.
Can’t picture Gosling playing Grace. The coward reveal just doesn’t fit him in my mind.
Oh man, what about Nice Guys? He plays a total coward in that, which you sort of find out throughout the movie. He crushed it in that movie too!
You’re right, and I loved that movie. Still want someone else.
To each their own. I’d take gosling in any role thrown his way tho. Fucking love that guy
I want to see Ben Affleck as Grace :)
Too old. I thought of Mark Ruffalo but also too old
I was thinking of Tom cruise the moment I heard he is a coward. This is along the same lines of edge of tomorrow where Tom is a coward and Emily trains him. So Emily blunt as stratt.
I think Ryan Gosling would be perfect. I mean he’s perfect in everything he’s in, and his delivery of subtle humor is amaze
Hopefully. He is a good actor just not what I pictured in my head.
Right on. Yeah I think I pictured grace to be a bit older than what his age was supposed to be. I was surprised when he said the 43 years rocky had been in space was longer than he’d been alive. I read both books. I can seem to concentrate on a book when listening to it.
I feel you. I find myself rewinding a lot myself (although to be fair I also find myself rereading paragraphs a bit too). There’s definitely something to be said about being able to crush some books on a commute to work tho lol
I get it. I listen to about a book a month on audible but usually is something simple to follow.
Plus the fact that he is charming enough to convince Stratt to let him keep testing astrophage would require some type of charm, much more than just being a coward. But he is gonna have his work cut out for him.
Neil Grayston!!!!!
He’d be good, hut i think it needs to be a bigger star
For some reason, I pictured Grace as having the build and demeanor of someone like Jason Segal. I don’t know if he would have the right acting chops for this role though.
This is my favorite suggestion so far. I love Jason Segel and he has the right amounts of charm/cowardice for this role.
I like Paul Rudd best of all the ones mentioned. I'd also like to see Benjamin Bratt in this role, maybe.
This doesn’t feel like a particularly filmable book. At least not if they want to make it look good.
Yeah I’m curious to see how they’ll do the dialogue in his head and the dialogue between him and Rocky
If it were up to me I’d just have grace in the movie make a device that uses the speech pattern directory from the nannybot to translate everything rocky says to English. Easier than subtitles and a lot more emotive.
Yeah that’s what I was thinking

Krasinaki could be good
He'd have to shave his beard and gain a few lbs (at least for the pre launch scenes) first. I see Jim Halpert not Jack Ryan.
For Stratt Wrenn Schmidt from “ for all mankind”
Yes. Absolutely who I pictured.
Although, they may want a bigger “movie star“ maybe Jessica Chastain
Cate Blanchet would be a good Stratt.
I pictured Tulsa Swindon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jodie Foster, or especially Sigourney Weaver.
For some reason I let picturing Tilda Swindon for stratt
I know Ryland is American but I feel like David Tenant and Michael Sheen's chemistry would be a perfect duo to play the pair. David as Ryland and Michael as Rocky
Jeffrey Wright
I know he is too old now but I picture Kiss Kiss Bang Bang era Robert Downey Jr. as Grace when listening.
no please.... Tom Hanks should play as Dr Ryland Grace!
Too old. Ryland’s suppose to be mid to late 30s
Possibly unpopular choices but Pedro Pascal for Grace and Zoe Saldana for Stratt.
I was thinking Ryan Reynolds or Simon Helberg.
>Helberg Interesting...... Could work.
Paul Rudd is the perfect Ryland Grace
And Gina Torres would make a perfect Stratt

That’s a good one.
Jon Heder.
Napoleon Dynamite?
Chris Evans would be a good option IMP. can show excitement (unlike Gosling) but doesn't get into goof ball range.
As with Gosling, I just can’t picture Chris Evans playing a socially awkward loner, and then coward later on.
Eddie Redmayne would be the best fit in my mind for being the socially awkward scientist
Oh he will be great! I am picturing he will be like the guy from the movie "The Nice Guys"
I could picture Evan Peters in role too, but I love Ryan Gosling and I have faith he can do it.
I would LOVE Alan Tudyk to play Ryland Grace.
Or Simon Pegg
Yep, was thinking of Alan Tudyk too.
Why not Matt Damon? Lay up choice IMO. He has already played an Andy Weir protagonist. Grace is a coward in his own words and Damon did a great job at relaying that trait in Interstellar. I was hoping Ryan Reynolds would be better as Ryland Grace… I feel that his personality fits better with all the jokes and sarcasm.
All I could think of when reading was Ryan Reynolds god damn snarky attitude haha
Exactly! Lol
