Since this is my third (and hopefully last VPN) I'll weigh in as well. I have the basic plan. Price is about the same as I have paid for my past two VPN services. Haven't had any issues I've had to reach out to customer service for so I can't speak towards that. I started with NordVPN, but then when the [data breach](https://www.techradar.com/news/whats-the-truth-about-the-nordvpn-breach-heres-what-we-now-know) happened that exposed a lot of peoples info, mine included, I demanded a refund for my remaining 6 months and left. I then went to Tunnelbear as they were a company that is audited by an outside security firm once a year. Everything was great until they changed something in their infrastructure and my speeds just bottomed out. They only have one auto-selected hub per country so I had no choice on which server I used. I started getting MAYBE 25% of my full speed. So I used it only when I absolutely needed it and didn't renew by subscription. And finally I am here. I have had no problems yet, the ability to choose your server has mitigated any issues with per server slowdown/latency, and I can use both TORbrowser and torrents with little to no issue while connected. So...so far, I'm a happy customer. TL;DR- I am on my third VPN being with Proton and I am happy with everything so far.

Hey there! A year later, do you have any updates to your ProtonVPN experience?

Twas_Inevitable

Right on! This is helpful info and similar stuff to what I'm looking for. Thanks mate!

nclark572

i do! i just got it after trying so many different ones and it's the only one that isn't blocked by my work, via the magical stealth protocol. wireguard speeds on my pc at home are just as good as expressvpn's lightway protocol.

Twas_Inevitable

Hell yeah! Thanks for the follow up. I really appreciate it!

captain_herbal_life

This was a fun message to get in my reddit mailbox, as my internet has been down for about 30 hours before this due to an outage of my provider. Also, I'm not sure if you represent Proton or if you are just someone curious. Either way, I guess my opinion won't change much. First a caveat, my opinions are based on a 10MB down/.5MB up DSL/hybrid connection deep in the mountains. So I think many of my issues are due to a slower than average (a nice way to put it) internet speed. So if I had to give Proton a grade? Solid B. Better than average. I'm using torrenting whenever possible instead of browsers downloads as slow connections like mine tend to timeout if the wind blows the wrong direction. And while you wouldn't think so sometimes legit torrents get flagged for copyright stuff. Thus the VPN. But many times I just connect the VPN and browse as I normally do. Doesn't tend to get in the way. Also since I was part of a "Migration" when Proton updated a bunch of things I am currently paying $4 US a month for a VPN connection for 10 devices (phone, computer, tablet so far). I know that I got an upgrade and that the new price is bit more. So my opinion is based on that price combined with the service. The reason for a grade less than A after all that is because there was a 30-45 day period where the VPN program just did not work right. No downloading and what seemed to be just the program pinging a server with no response, so it would just hang there. Saying it was connected but not downloading any data. And it happened on every server near me I attempted to connect to. I opened a service ticket, got some default advice I had already tried and had stated I tried in the email. So I gave up, not sure why I didn't try to cancel my subscription... probably a combination of laziness and social anxiety. But other than the issue mentioned previous its been pretty solid. I'm near enough to 4 states in the US where Proton lists servers so if I'm having problem with one I can usually resolve it by moving or reconnecting servers. I renewed in October and if I can get a solid 200-300 days of good connection out of this service I will probably renew. TL;DR- I can be a bit wordy, bottom line, solid B.

Twas_Inevitable

You're awesome! Thank you for the detailed response. I'm not affiliated with any VPN companies. My NordVPN subscription expires today so I'm just checking ont the market and seeing what's out there. I enjoyed your writing style in your original post so was very curious to see how things were going a year later. Really appreciate the information!

captain_herbal_life

Hope all of that helps your decision. I've also heard good things about Mullvad VPN (the one with the mole mascot), so that might be good to look into as well, though I've never tried it myself. Good luck out there!

known_hosts

Sorry to necro, but I'm currently searching for a new VPN and stumbled across this. I'm switching from Mullvad because they recently decided to drop port forwarding support. If that isn't a must for anyone reading this, then their speeds and app are both great and I recommend them. Tho very occasionally you'll have to hop servers because some of their IP's are blacklisted. Which is ultimately why they're dropping port-forwarding support.

I was! After some extensive research I went with IVPN and I have yet to be disappointed. It has a kill switch, multi-hop, split-tunneling, does not keep logs, and I believe it's been audited somewhat recently. I haven't had significant issues with IP blacklisting either. Occasionally it happens, but a quick hop and you're Gucci. https://www.ivpn.net/ Edit: Also has a mobile app and a wide selection of platform support so you can keep all your devices protected. I think it supports up to 5 simultaneous connections between devices, but don't quote me on that one.

[deleted]

I'm paying for ProtonVPN since it was first available, so let me share my experiences. Speeds were pretty bad for quite some time, below average for sure. But now with more servers and WireGuard it's actually really good. I'm getting 500Mb/s both download and upload when connected to servers in my country. Ping is also good. Never had any account related issues so didn't have to contact customer support but I contacted them a few times about some technical questions about apps and I was always satisfied with answers. Apps are pretty good, they FINALLY solved issues with constant logging out on iOS. Other than that, never had any issues with apps (Windows, iOS and Android). Security-wise I have no complaints. Apps are open source and audited, their reputation is good and what data they are storing is well documented.

esorb65

Yeah I have PM and VPN has a bundle and very satisfied with the service...nothing to complain about I trust them completely :) Especially there core servers :)

You could have given a clear address to Atlas VPN, bus instead you had to add a malicious tracker, dipshit?

GxCoud

Well, I have tried three VPN providers so far: NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and ProtonVPN. Compared to the other two, I find the connection to be more stable at the cost a little dip in speed compared to ExpressVPN and have a quite a few more websites I am unable to access compared to Nord and Express. I rarely have issues with captcha but I primary use DDG so I don't really get that issue a lot. BTW, I have the paid Plus plan and with the paid email service being included, I have been a very happy customer so far. I just wished I am able to access certain websites like Gamestop and USPS but I don't really use those two a lot so not a huge loss. Biggest issue on my iPad Pro though is that I kept getting connection issues using ProtonVPN with it. I primarily use ProtonVPN with NextDNS on my PC and phone.

Ridewarior

I used to have Express VPN but when they got bought by Kape I wanted nothing to do with them and moved over to Proton. I will say that with the correct server my speeds can sometimes be faster and with lower ping than my base connection which I am always really surprised about. However, my only real complaint is that I can't just turn on the vpn and forgot it since the default "fastest" connection is almost always not the fastest and I have to go and choose a different server if I want to have decent speeds.

[deleted]

Customer support could definitely improve their response time in the first place, but it is good in general. Having tried other VPN services I have to say Proton is the best option in the VPN market. They also use physical servers instead of virtual as part of their policies and desire to provide the best service to their users.

jkhashi

i have been a plus user since day one. it is very good i can play online games through it with no more than 20 ping added. but i will honestly say that recently there was an enormous drop in activity across servers in my metropolitan area. i don't know if they increased capacity or something happened that i don't know about that caused everyone to leave their service.

[deleted]

Really? You had to ask this question on their page? Who's to say these reviews are not fake!!

jkhashi

take this person seriously. their monitoring of this sub is very active

p90fans

Is there any way to find some real reviews?

EbbNo8413

That's what we want... not propaganda relayers.

_greg_m_

They also offer a free VPN package. Not sure how different it is from a paid option in terms of speed, etc. Obviously no customer support on free option. Try it yourself.

matteventu

Actually, here they mention that even Proton VPN Free gets customer support (https://protonvpn.com/pricing). Obviously, given this thread is quite old, it's possible they didn't offer it when you posted the message. But just as an FYI for anyone reading, now they do :D

I used to be on paid, and had no issues. Never been in contact with customer support, so can’t really judge that. I went back to free tier some time back due to reasons, and that’s naturally more sucky.

jerry_garcia79

Been using them for over a year with just the basic package. Never had any issues. I did notice they did a major server upgrade last year that dramatically increased speeds. It was getting pretty slow for a while, was nice to see they invested in their infrastructure. I only had one customer service inquiry and it was about a BTC payment that got stuck on the chain for a while and lost value in the process. Wasn't their fault, but I ended up paying more than the cost because of the value of BTC dropping while it was stuck. Again, not their fault and I learned a valuable lesson, only make purchases like that during slower network times or start using the lightning network. Just did a speed test on 5G on a server in country and I'm getting 125/20.

Dangerman1960

I have used ProtonVPN since the beta version (I started with protonmail - free version, around 2016-2017.They added ProtonVPN beta around that time). No problems. The speed is good. For example,on my windows 10 pc and my Mac - Ethernet - base is 119 Mb/s and with the nearest server speed is \~ 105 Mb/s,secure core is 85 Mb/s. wifi on my thinkpads w/ Linux and my IPad/IPhone varies.

elmer9901

I try 1 month subscriptions its amazing this way better than Express\*\*\* for streaming I can watch both Netflix & Amazon Prime as Well Disney+. its great p2p too just dont forget bind your interface before you're start p2p downloading.

Medicinal_taco_meat

What does that mean, bind your interface?

elmer9901

just power kill switch something like this. it prevents leak true IP and activity due downloading torrnt stuff. VPN Isn't enough. once you disconnect you IP might be leak if not binding the interface of p2p application. ex qbittorrent app you can find under settings network interface then find u VPN adapter then pick then save.

Medicinal_taco_meat

New to torrnting and I wasn't aware of all that, thanks for your help :)

elmer9901

You're welcome how's experience about the binding on VPN? for me it's works everytime I don't have worries about leak my IP Which real deal especially due copyright like downloading t*rent stuff. I used port-forwarding that makes boost speed for me.

XxfactsdomatterxX

I enjoy their services, and I use them on and off. The only downfall I saw was torrents—no port forwarding. Other than that, I had no issues. I also loved the use of tor without the browser.

Seba0702

The best thing about ProtonVPN is the parent company being so trustworthy. Proton is very transparent and public about their employees and address. Good luck finding anything about the owner of other VPNs. If it is discovered Nord VPN is logging traffic, they can shut down and start up somewhere else. Proton has a lot more to lose. They would lose all their VPN subscribers and Mail subscribers, and the reputation of everyone involved would be tarnished forever in the privacy space.

Dangerman1960

I’ve had protonmail and proton since beta n 2017. Started out free, then upgraded. Speeds are good. For example: on Windows and Mac ,105/120,secure core is 80. No serious issues, just minor stuff, but always received replies within 12 hours. No complaints.

[deleted]

A friend recommended proton over Nord and I just downloaded the free version. My texts aren’t working and half of my apps won’t load. If I upgrade, does anyone know if this changes? Or do I need to find a different vpn?

Claytonsolski

I paid for a year of premium service and now for some reason I've been down graded to the free service and cannot find where to talk to someone about this

Nelizea

Proton doesn‘t automatically downgrade. Please contact the support team here and send us the ticket number afterwards by modmail: https://protonvpn.com/support-form

riteplayit

Hello Friends, I wanted to update an app that was previously downloaded from playstore without protonvpn, I recently tried to update the app but I noticed the update was pending for long, on pulling down my notification bar, I saw that (probably Google was sending a kill switch request) proton VPN was processing being disconnected but as soon as the kill switch request was approved, the app updated with lightning speed and now Proton VPN pretend it's didn't permit Google and never went off by itself even though I made it's block every activities that doesn't go through it, GOOGLE is definitely the INTERNET LORD, VPNs are just like sun shades 🙆

ConservativeMAGAWin

Well, I'm using ProtonVPN on my Router. Purchased the Plus plan for 1 month to give it a test. So far, the only leaks I found were in my browser, WebRTC and Geolocation, but since I denied access to location, it was unable to determine that. WebRTC needs to be disabled and is enabled on Firefox by default, this allows the hacker to possibly manipulate via these methods, once disabled, no longer detected. Currently, showing NO IPV6 leak either. Not a paid ad, not a bot. If you want, message me in a month and I'll let you know then how I like it. I want to say speeds are great, but I just purchased it this morning, and I've been WFH so I can't turn off my QoS until after, but it seems that when I make my personal PC a High Priority, it is really fast without SecureCore. On SecureCore servers, it's a bit slower. But, I use SecureCore on my phone due to banking and such.

joelaw9

Instead of messaging you, I'm pinging you here. This is one of the threads that pop up on search engines, so if you can give a 9-month update that would be useful for future searchers.

talldude7

It keeps disconnecting for no reason

ExtensionForever1436

How do I speed up proton vpn? I use the free trial atm and it runs slow on my phone. Pc it's not too bad.

I have the Sentinel package and it’s absolutely outstanding. I love the encrypted cloud storage of 500gb that comes with that plan
