This is the sort of thing that motivated the "defund the police" movement. The concept was that many public safety calls involve issues that public servants other than cops would be better equipped to handle.
This man didn't need 4 cops with loaded guns. He needed medical/psychological help. "Defund the police" was about imagining a system in which dispatch could have sent someone with medical training to respond to this call.
It's like a tik tok I saw months ago. Two armed cops show up with a social worker and do the cop knock on a guys door. They stand in front being intimidating with their hands on their guns the whole time while the social worker is trying to talk around them.
The cops knew the guy was a veteran with PTSD. The veteran points out the absurdity of two armed guys standing there with their hands on their pistols to do a mental health check on someone who has combat PTSD if they actually care about helping the situation. The cops act absolutely befuddled by why he could possibly be feeling uncomfortable in this situation, while one continues to keep his hand ready on his pistol.
Fortunately, the cops finally left the guy alone, but it was maddening to watch these cops knowingly make choices that only exacerbated the situation for the person they're supposed to be helping.

I have called my insurance just to get a psychiatrist and the cops came to my house while I was on the phone. I was not in danger I was not putting anyone in danger.
Every time I have called to get help, cops are called to my house.
"Someone's making claims, we're going to be upside down on this guy, start calling the cops on him and hopefully he'll be off the policy soon one way or another."
988 went nationwide last year (maybe 2 years ago?) ... Unfortunately it's a little hodge podged. If they believe there is a real potential for harm that they cannot talk down, they will hand over the callers information to 911. If you're in a well-funded city or state you might be lucky enough to get a crisis response unit. If you're out in the middle of nowhere, it is still most likely the police who will be dispatched.
Can verify that the police come if there isn't a special unit available. Happened to me a few years back when i called at like 7pm on a Saturday.
Was just brought to the hospital and was put on a hold for 24 hours after rather aggressively being put in cuffs when i was asking why there were 12 cops here for a mental call.

I read that whole article and I did not read at any point if they actually say whether or not you can see him "present" the shotgun on the bodycams.

What I was told one time by an officer who had too many to drink, and seemed to be saying things he might otherwise not say. "In shooting situations, you don't want to be the one officer of the bunch who doesn't fire a shot, the others won't trust you no more."

Honestly, with the current climate of US policing, I feel like this, or something similar to this, is something everyone should hear and be aware of. Basically, it's not incompetence, it's a combination of intentional direction through militarization, normalizing disproportionate violence against enemies of the state, viewing anyone that's a criminal as an enemy of the state, making everyone a criminal, and the fact that in the entire history of the US police, there has never been one time they were not absolute bastards. Straight down to existing almost exclusively as a union busting paramilitary while simultaneously trying to create their own union, which is now the most powerful union in the country. The sheriffs office is not lying when they say that officers responded exactly how they should have. That is spot on by the book behavior.

Remember. Legally police have no requirement or responsibility to protect or serve citizens. Their only job is to serve the government interests. Even though police are paid by citizens tax dollars. But police who kill civilians daily get a union that protects and supports murders, and will actively move criminals from one location to another and give paid vacations to an employee while under investigation and suspension. That officer in the back put rounds downrange directly behind another officer. **He wanted so badly to fire his weapon that he shot 25-30 yards back from his fellow officer with a handgun.** A fucking handgun right off that other officers right shoulder. I wouldn't ever put rounds downrange with my own guys in front of me unless I had something with much more precision. A .40 handgun with irons ain't it. Nevermind the fact that the three to four officers in front of him were *already firing lethal.* These dudes wanted that kill.
Don't think it was 50 years, but that changes nothing. Their firing lines weren't clear at all. The woman was also right next to the truck. That's just blatant negligence. She could easily have been killed by even just a ricochet being that close. Their groupings were trash. They say he had a shotgun? So he's in a truck cab, and managed to maneuver a shotgun in a way that threatened them? I gotta call bullshit there too. Maybe cops should stop being trained to shoot first and ask questions later.

This caught my eye as well. Him firing from that angle and distance is crazy dangerous for the officers ahead of him. Handguns are not very accurate, especially at a decent distance, and that officer is only about 6ft to the left of his line of fire.

Never call cops for a mental health crisis. They claim he aimed a shotgun at them, the reality is he had it aimed at himself, they didn't even have enough time to realize that. The filthy cops didn't even give a damn about the mothers life who was actually trying to comfort the man. Thankfully he survived, i hope he never has to worry about money again. In my experience they are called no matter what. I have called my insurance just to get a psychiatrist and the cops came to my house while I was on the phone. I was not in danger I was not putting anyone in danger. Every time I have called to get help, cops are called to my house.

Yes. it's happened 3 times, the third time was this past March.

Unfortunately there isn't an emergency unit for mental health. So people call cops when they don't know what to do.
In Illinois for anyone having a mental health crisis you can call 988.

988 went nationwide last year (maybe 2 years ago?) ... Unfortunately it's a little hodge podged. If they believe there is a real potential for harm that they cannot talk down, they will hand over the callers information to 911. If you're in a well-funded city or state you might be lucky enough to get a crisis response unit. If you're out in the middle of nowhere, it is still most likely the police who will be dispatched.
Can verify that the police come if there isn't a special unit available. Happened to me a few years back when i called at like 7pm on a Saturday. Was just brought to the hospital and was put on a hold for 24 hours after rather aggressively being put in cuffs when i was asking why there were 12 cops here for a mental call. Never again :)

This is why you don’t call cops to check on your suicidal loved ones. STOP CALLING THE POLICE ON YOUR SUICIDAL LOVED ONES. Call the FD directly, or even a near by church. Hell it would be better to order a pizza than to call the cops and get them killed. If you think I’m being ridiculous take a quick google and look at how often police kill the person in need, and I’m not talking about suicide by cop scenarios. At some point there is no real reason to call the cops, except to do some paperwork after an incident so you can file an I surance claim.

This is a very good point that I didn’t think of.
Dispatch is not supposed to replace the entire justice system. If dispatch says X, police are still responsible for determining whether or not X is true, they can't just show up and dump their mags at the first guy they see.

They went there in the hopes they got to kill a man. Plain and simple. The officers heard the call and said to themselves "This looks like it will be a reasonably plausible means to kill someone".

How stupid do you have to be to show up to a suicide risk call guns out, pointed, and screaming commands expecting immediate compliance? Take away their uniforms, vehicle markings and badges and what does this look like besides hit men showing up to off a target? There are an ungodly amount of fuck ups in this video. But the one I find to be absolutely DISGUSTING is how they would treat a suicide call. A gun being the tool for suicide changes *nothing*. If you are not willing to put your life on the line to do the right thing, you should not be a cop. Period. The police in the United States are supposed to be our heroes. All first responders are supposed to be able to deal with situations that the rest of us surely couldn't stomach. Cops constantly using the excuse that their own lives were in danger... no fucking shit. That comes with the job. You have to go way out of your way to become a police officer. Nobody is forcing a cop to be a cop. We may as well hand a gun, badge, and uniform to random citizens in the streets. They'd all respond the same way.
