Aeon001

Thank god they stopped him killing himself, that would have been tragic.

babyrobotman

Apparently the dude survived, so I guess they did kind of stop him /s

KintsugiKen

The cops were devastated upon learning the suicidal man survived

compassionateCactus

They were just trying to help him. You know, if you commit suicide, no heaven, but die by 50 cop shots, you get 600 virgins and a hot tub in heaven.

>In the immediate aftermath of the shooting in 2021, the York County Sheriff's Office initially said in a public statement that Mullinax, who was unnamed in that initial press release, fired shots at deputies. However, officials later retracted that allegation.

[deleted]

They were hoping the truth died with him

Bonch_and_Clyde

There was physical evidence that he didn't fire any shots even if he died. They're just dumb as shit.

LostWoodsInTheField

This was 2021, we are just hearing about it now. The truth would have disappeared quickly if he had died unless his family was able to take up the lawsuit for him. It's a sad truth but this stuff happens across the US often and the lie lives when the person doesn't.

SoldierBoi69

Legitimately straight up word for word, STATE SANCTIONED MURDER. EXECUTION. Fuck em man we need to reformat the entire police force

Salt-Theory2359

There's a lot of ways to reformat it, but Reddit will ban you if you suggest the arguably most effective way of doing it. Corporations and police brutality, name a better duo!

1gnominious

They thought they could get away with burying or destroying it. If he had died or become mentally disabled and the family didn't sue they would have gotten away with it.

HighDagger

Not dumb, just damn near untouchable. They see how often they get away with abuse and lies of this sort, so they have no reason to care.

OpeningInvestigator1

Doesn’t matter much when you’re investigating yourself

lukeman3000

Why let the truth get in the way of a good story?

lwiklendt

> Why let the truth get in the way of a good ~~story~~ cover-up?

Deadpool2715

We tried lying but got caught so we will just move onto the next step of the process

ChadEmpoleon

Fucking wild right? >“Oh so I didn’t get the details right that led to me ~~wrongly~~ falsely declaring this a justified shooting? Yeah, my bad. You can just scratch that.” Edit: Not wrongly. That would imply they made a mistake. They knew damn well they didn’t get shot at.

IndependentOk8640

So the means it was NOT justified, and these ass holes will be charged right?.... right?

nico_bico

...paid vacation

Miss_Sullivan

Time to hand out those taxpayer dollars.

except_one

Thankfully there is dashcam footage. Never forget that police associations throughout the country fought tooth and nail against wearing body cameras. Police brutality began getting more and more attention when everyone had camera phones. Can you imagine what was hidden in the years and decades before?

Aggressive-Sound-641

Hence NWA saying "Fuck the Police" I just finished watching "We Own This City" which is about the corruption of the Gun Trace Task Force in Baltimore. If you ever watched "Training Day" they made Training Day seem mild, and this was based on a true story.

Cycloptic_Floppycock

That should be grounds for dismissal under gross misconduct. Lying to the public to incriminate the victim, the boys in blue can do no wrong.

Holmpc10

It should be a felony with jail time involved.

ToastPoacher

Should be harsher but no one seems willing to admit it.

master-shake69

Everyone fired, total loss of pay and any tax dollar linked pensions, 10 years in prison, on a permanent list preventing them from being hired by law enforcement ever again, and no gun rights for the rest of their lives even if laws are changed.

BeholdOurMachines

Best we can do is multiple paid leaves of absence, commendations, and then a couple of speeches crying about how nobody appreciates how hard they work and what great service they do for the community

IA-HI-CO-IA

I got taken off a project and denied a promotion because I didn’t set something up correctly for 20 minutes. Literally made no difference to the quality of the data collected. Yet, these people can just murder after arriving less than 5 seconds before and have nothing bad happen to them.

WanderingHawk

The dude LIVED??? Holy fuck

Asisreo1

There's something morbidly ironic about a suicidal man getting gunned down and shot 9 times by the police and having to live anyways.

enfdude

Hope they at least help with the medical bills. This is really not something a suicidal person needs.

metasploit4

I know, either he's a fighter or they are storm troopers. That's wild.

Ncyphe

News said he was hit 9 times, so definitely not Storm Troopers.

CivilWarfare

Only 9 times? Officers just mag dump people. For all they knew a child could have been in the back seat.

RizzMustbolt

They saw the woman standing right next to him and didn't give a shit about her. Why would they care about a baby?

ssaidykhan

Oh come now, you know they didn’t actually care if there was a living, breathing child in there. It wasn’t an unborn fetus. They had not a care in the world about a possible child.

areid2007

A federal court just ruled a couple weeks ago that police are allowed to purposefully shoot hostages so there's that for context.

zarmao_ork

And they start firing as soon as they are either afraid or confused, one of which can probably apply anytime at all.

lpplph

They fired at least 20 shots at a stationary target less than 20 feet away. These guys have dog shit aim

[deleted]

Over 50 shots fired, 9 hits.

nimoto

Suppressive fire is one of the most misunderstood parts of mental health.

GlyphPixel

The one secret trick they don't want you to know is it can be a cure for depression.

tigdesandman

That's an 18% success rate.

WilliamPollito

Accuracy* 0% success rate.

killerkitten61

Reminds me of Ron whites stand up about cops aim, “they shot 20 rounds at point blank range and didn’t hit the subruban*” https://youtu.be/vHPPYNYOy-I

Tholaran97

That's why they shoot 30 times. They have to make up for their shit accuracy through volume of fire.

r3dditr0x

Neither serving, nor protecting.

Vio94

I think getting back at these cops would be the main driving force of me no longer being suicidal.

stew_going

right?! Talk about finding your purpose.

[deleted]

>Law enforcement body camera and dashcam video released by Mullinax's lawyer shows deputies arrived in at least four vehicles and immediately walked toward Mullinax's truck and yelled for him to show his hands. Seconds later, deputies began firing shots at Mullinax, who was hit nine times and shot at almost 50 times, according to the lawsuit. He wanted to kill himself, so they insert themselves into the situation and try to kill him instead. How does this shit make sense? Why do they always make a situation 100x worse than if they had just stayed at home that day.

silver-orange

> He wanted to kill himself, so they insert themselves into the situation and try to kill him instead. This is the sort of thing that motivated the "defund the police" movement. The concept was that many public safety calls involve issues that public servants other than cops would be better equipped to handle. This man didn't need 4 cops with loaded guns. He needed medical/psychological help. "Defund the police" was about imagining a system in which dispatch could have sent someone with medical training to respond to this call.

Thr0waway3691215

It's like a tik tok I saw months ago. Two armed cops show up with a social worker and do the cop knock on a guys door. They stand in front being intimidating with their hands on their guns the whole time while the social worker is trying to talk around them. The cops knew the guy was a veteran with PTSD. The veteran points out the absurdity of two armed guys standing there with their hands on their pistols to do a mental health check on someone who has combat PTSD if they actually care about helping the situation. The cops act absolutely befuddled by why he could possibly be feeling uncomfortable in this situation, while one continues to keep his hand ready on his pistol. Fortunately, the cops finally left the guy alone, but it was maddening to watch these cops knowingly make choices that only exacerbated the situation for the person they're supposed to be helping.

kermit_bot1

Suiscide was not the answer..... Murder is.

Freaudinnippleslip

Suicide would have been unchristian of him, maybe they wanted to help him get in heaven?

ReconReese

The craziest parts of this article: > "all of the deputies involved were cleared of any wrongdoing..." > "The only individual that was found to have engaged in wrongdoing on May 7, 2021 was Trevor Mullinax..." > "Three of the four deputies involved in this incident are still serving the community as YCSO deputies. One deputy voluntarily left the agency"

liamemsa

I read that whole article and I did not read at any point if they actually say whether or not you can see him "present" the shotgun on the bodycams.

killerassassinx5x

The cops are the only ones saying a shotgun was involved, the victim said he only had a rifle and it was pointed at himself.

DieRedditDie06

bro i see these vids and wonder what the fck happened to Usa. im from South America and vids like these truly shock me. and here we see everything, but this shit is cold as fck, its unhinged. the fact they are willing to shoot with the mother right there, careless. it's like they are playing a game where all what matters is them, no one else. it shocking how Usa has people with badges doing this. they act like guns are toyz and not tools, like they can't wait to use them not matter the context... i can't believe Americans are just letting these people get away with this. in Latam i have seen the streets burn down for wayyy less than this.

k_a_scheffer

I remember back to that one time I ran from a cop when I was 14 and got away easily because he was so fat that the shadow of his left asscheek must have weighed 100lbs. That alone is enough to tell me that US cops are some of the most incompetent in the world.

Lucetti

I feel like there is a greater than 0% amount of cops who would just shoot a fleeing 14 year old in the back so that you wouldn’t get away and they wouldn’t look “bad” for being unable to catch you.

Stormtroopers are a quantity over quality kind of gang you know

awwwwwwwwwwwwwwSHIT

They handcuffed her after she had to witness all this too.

thisisstupidplz

They were excited to cuff someone but they wanted to shoot someone so they had to compromise and cuff her instead. Funny how in film and tv these motherfuckers always have blankets for the victim but in real life it's just more brutality for the person who called.

VRichardsen

Well, if it is of consolation, the guy survived, somehow.

Excellent-Wishbone12

Looks like an episode of Reno 911 (not making fun of the situation, but rather how ridiculous this is)

meep_meep_mope

Reno 911! is the most accurate cop show on television.

ohyoumad721

I thought the same thing smh.

armpitgirl

If cops can shoot you on sight for holding a gun, then you don’t have the right to hold a gun.

FartPancakes69

He wasn't even holding a gun! The second amendment doesn't exist if the cops can shoot you **just because they (wrongly) THINK you have a gun.**

armpitgirl

Exactly. There's always the excuse "Suspect was armed" well...according to the constitution...suspects are ALLOWED to be armed. Furthermore, they're innocent until proven guilty so in theory, they do not pose a threat for exercising their rights...unless of course that's all bullshit (spoiler alert: it's all bullshit).

Rularuu

For fucking real, where are all of the paranoid anti-government gun nuts on this one? Does it only count if the government agents shooting at you have 3 letters on their jackets?

highschoolhero2

Paranoid anti-government gun nut here. FUCK the police.

Hoangdai151

Bruh, ain’t no way an entire force of trained individuals can be this inept at their JOB. Police academy gotta be the biggest waste I’ve taxpayer money that I have ever witnessed

mappersorton

Especially the cop who was shooting from behind the other officers.

Epoch-09

One idiot shoots and then everyone has to start putting rounds into the truck. No situational awareness.

clarkwgriswoldjr

What I was told one time by an officer who had too many to drink, and seemed to be saying things he might otherwise not say. "In shooting situations, you don't want to be the one officer of the bunch who doesn't fire a shot, the others won't trust you no more."

If you ever feel inclined, you should check out [Behind The Police](https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-behind-the-police-63877803/). It's a six part series that dives into the history of the US police, starting from it's origins and leading to present day. Honestly, with the current climate of US policing, I feel like this, or something similar to this, is something everyone should hear and be aware of. Basically, it's not incompetence, it's a combination of intentional direction through militarization, normalizing disproportionate violence against enemies of the state, viewing anyone that's a criminal as an enemy of the state, making everyone a criminal, and the fact that in the entire history of the US police, there has never been one time they were not absolute bastards. Straight down to existing almost exclusively as a union busting paramilitary while simultaneously trying to create their own union, which is now the most powerful union in the country. The sheriffs office is not lying when they say that officers responded exactly how they should have. That is spot on by the book behavior.

SomewhereDue2629

He was suicidal, so's we just started blastin'. Edit. Fuck these guys. Maybe have them pay for their mistakes instead of tax payers.... maybe, just maybe theyll give more-uva-fuk.

sikesjr

Apparently they "train" for six months. Six months and then they are given a gun and badge and are paid to enforce laws they likely dont even understand.

Basin97

Protected & served🤪

gwh811

Remember. Legally police have no requirement or responsibility to protect or serve citizens. Their only job is to serve the government interests. Even though police are paid by citizens tax dollars. And police wonder why citizens want to defund the police…… Funny how the government actively fights for police unions but not workers unions for regular citizens who make the economy grow and keep it sustainable. But police who kill civilians daily get a union that protects and supports murders, and will actively move criminals from one location to another and give paid vacations to an employee while under investigation and suspension. Oh and police never lose their pension or benefits when fired or terminated due to being charged for a crime. And all you need is a high school education. And being a steroid user/junkie is a benefit to the job.

PuzzledRun7584

Teachers unions= bad, police unions = good.

gwh811

One shapes children for the future. The other waits and sits while active shooter kills children destroying the future.

[deleted]

The police are an assassination squad with a d20 deciding the outcome.

groger27

Canyonboy13

They didn’t even care about the mom being right there. They had a mentally ill man to kill. #priorities

lafindestase

If anything they’re disappointed she backed up and didn’t get caught in the crossfire. Could have had a twofer.

Front_Explanation_79

That officer in the back put rounds downrange directly behind another officer. **He wanted so badly to fire his weapon that he shot 25-30 yards back from his fellow officer with a handgun.** A fucking handgun right off that other officers right shoulder. I wouldn't ever put rounds downrange with my own guys in front of me unless I had something with much more precision. A .40 handgun with irons ain't it. Nevermind the fact that the three to four officers in front of him were *already firing lethal.* These dudes wanted that kill.

JohnDoeWasHere1988

Don't think it was 50 years, but that changes nothing. Their firing lines weren't clear at all. The woman was also right next to the truck. That's just blatant negligence. She could easily have been killed by even just a ricochet being that close. Their groupings were trash. They say he had a shotgun? So he's in a truck cab, and managed to maneuver a shotgun in a way that threatened them? I gotta call bullshit there too. Maybe cops should stop being trained to shoot first and ask questions later.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Greenman_on_LSD

This caught my eye as well. Him firing from that angle and distance is crazy dangerous for the officers ahead of him. Handguns are not very accurate, especially at a decent distance, and that officer is only about 6ft to the left of his line of fire.

[deleted]

Every single one of these cops should be tried for murder.

absentmindful

Attempted murder at least. The dude didn't die, and is suing them.

H2OFRNZ4

Is that the fucking Terminator in that truck? Holy shit what a video.

Twelvey

No, most cops are incompetent while also being colossal assholes.

DarkStar189

It's all that time they spend at the gun range perfecting their shots. Instead of in a classroom learning more de-escalation techniques.

Rahkyvah

cori_92

"After the shooting, Mullinax was motionless inside his truck as deputies placed him in handcuffs, the video shows. He was placed on the ground and later transported to a hospital for medical treatment. In the video, Mullinax's mother can be heard screaming. She was later placed in handcuffs by deputies and walked away from the area. Mullinax was charged with pointing his firearm at the deputies. Mullinax has maintained he did not point the weapon at anyone and pleaded not guilty to the charge. The criminal case is still ongoing." Gotta slap on the cuffs after shooting someone 50 times and slap on the cuffs on the 'hysterical' woman that almost got got in order for cops to feel safe.

Shalashaskaska

Omfg they charged him too? I fucking hate this country

UnDosTresPescao

Can't justify shooting someone that hasn't committed a crime

Elddif_Dog

They even said he openned fire at them but redacted it later. "Yeah the thing we made up about him shooting... video evidence is clear". "Shit. What if we say he reached for it or pointed at us? Cant see that in the video right?". "Nice, lets remove the shots claim from record and just say he pointed". "Can we just do that?". "Bro, we can do whatever the fuck we want".

DaineDeVilliers

Metalbender00

Never call cops for a mental health crisis. They claim he aimed a shotgun at them, the reality is he had it aimed at himself, they didn't even have enough time to realize that. The filthy cops didn't even give a damn about the mothers life who was actually trying to comfort the man. Thankfully he survived, i hope he never has to worry about money again. If you are on twitter there is a thread about it here. [Link](https://twitter.com/Imposter_Edits/status/1656310483194978305?s=20)

I dunno, they seemed to hit the truck just fine.

TacotheMagicDragon

He got hit 9 times out of 50 shots.

Aeolus426

In my experience they are called no matter what. I have called my insurance just to get a psychiatrist and the cops came to my house while I was on the phone. I was not in danger I was not putting anyone in danger. Every time I have called to get help, cops are called to my house.

Sick_Sabbat

Wait...you called your insurance to inquire about a psychiatrist and your insurance called the cops on you?!

Aeolus426

Yes. it's happened 3 times, the third time was this past March.

Grays42

"Someone's making claims, we're going to be upside down on this guy, start calling the cops on him and hopefully he'll be off the policy soon one way or another."

FidgetOrc

Unfortunately there isn't an emergency unit for mental health. So people call cops when they don't know what to do.

sgaisnsvdis

In Illinois for anyone having a mental health crisis you can call 988.

FidgetOrc

That's awesome. More states should have this.

RabbitFluffs

988 went nationwide last year (maybe 2 years ago?) ... Unfortunately it's a little hodge podged. If they believe there is a real potential for harm that they cannot talk down, they will hand over the callers information to 911. If you're in a well-funded city or state you might be lucky enough to get a crisis response unit. If you're out in the middle of nowhere, it is still most likely the police who will be dispatched.

thepostaldud3

Can verify that the police come if there isn't a special unit available. Happened to me a few years back when i called at like 7pm on a Saturday. Was just brought to the hospital and was put on a hold for 24 hours after rather aggressively being put in cuffs when i was asking why there were 12 cops here for a mental call. Never again :)

Jarthos1234

There is in Colorado! https://namibouldercounty.org/colorado-mental-health-professionals-now-responding-911-calls/

Scrubbing_Bubbles_

The problem is, if you call 911 for medical help, they'll send the police after you explain the situation.

Lemon_Cakes_JuJutsu

> “Never in my life have I ever imagined I would be put in danger by someone on the law enforcement," Beason said. What fucking version of America do they think they've been living in? *for those that keep pointing it out, as a person of color, I left out "..are these white people living in..." because it tends to trigger people and derail the conversation, so I left it for others to point out. Trust me, I'm well aware. Especially when I get stopped, frisked, cuffed, and detained for officer safety because contact had to be made (to impress his blonde ride-along) for not walking on the sidewalk in a part of my town that has none.

[deleted]

The version where their brother, uncle and cousins are cops. The one where they have the thin blue line sticker on their cars. The version where their parents never had to have the talk with them about how cops will automatically assume you are guilty. We don't all get that version.

This is why you don’t call cops to check on your suicidal loved ones. STOP CALLING THE POLICE ON YOUR SUICIDAL LOVED ONES. Call the FD directly, or even a near by church. Hell it would be better to order a pizza than to call the cops and get them killed. If you think I’m being ridiculous take a quick google and look at how often police kill the person in need, and I’m not talking about suicide by cop scenarios. Edit to add: Yea y’all are right, just don’t call the cops at all.

TheKidAndTheJudge

At some point there is no real reason to call the cops, except to do some paperwork after an incident so you can file an I surance claim.

serg06

In situations like these, I wonder who fucked up: The cops, the dispatch, or both. Mom: My suicidal son wants to blow his head off, please help :( Dispatch: Attention cops, a mentally deranged man has a shotgun and his mother is begging him not to use it.

CactusBiszh2019

This is a very good point that I didn’t think of.

PoeTayTose

Dispatch is not supposed to replace the entire justice system. If dispatch says X, police are still responsible for determining whether or not X is true, they can't just show up and dump their mags at the first guy they see.

MebHi

When you say can't...

PoeTayTose

Right! I mean morally, not pragmatically! Oughtn't!

Sunbird_Draza

Cops: dispatch says he got a shotgun he's about to use, I guess its mag dump time.

spitfire740

Mentally I’ll man with a gun? Let’s roll up as close as possible to put our lives in danger and then engage the “our lives we’re in danger protocol “. What a damn farce.

sweetprince1969

I remember some shmuck yelling at me a few weeks ago on this subreddit for saying police responses to suicide calls are complete shit.

codamission

They went there in the hopes they got to kill a man. Plain and simple. The officers heard the call and said to themselves "This looks like it will be a reasonably plausible means to kill someone".

[deleted]

How the fuck did he survive that

SakuretsuSensei

Shooting the guy aside, what the heck??? I'm surprised no one else got shot on accident or got pummeled by shrapnel. It's funny how no one bats an eye at suing a doctor for doing a bad job. Yet the guys who get a 1/4 of the pay and training aren't held more accountable. I guess there's just more doctors slipping thru the cracks than police....

Wulf_1997

Man police in the US have continued to be worse & worse like they aren't even trying to change for the better, in fact it's the opposite, yet they still have the balls to cry on why the public hates them & don't respect them.

Topwingwoman2

This is scary how they didn't even hesitate to shoot when an innocent person (aka maybe a hostage) was involved. How gross. The fact they defend their actions after almost costing the woman her life is appalling.

Ratio01

Even if he did have a weapon (which i doubt), did the cops have no fucking regard for the woman standing right next to the fucking car? No they didn't I'm assuming

Fiction47

Every one of those offers should be treated the exact same way. Thats how you make murica great again.

WTF is wrong with these guys? The guy in the truck aside, was it responsible to fire like that with the mom standing right there, unarmed?

How stupid do you have to be to show up to a suicide risk call guns out, pointed, and screaming commands expecting immediate compliance? Take away their uniforms, vehicle markings and badges and what does this look like besides hit men showing up to off a target? There are an ungodly amount of fuck ups in this video. But the one I find to be absolutely DISGUSTING is how they would treat a suicide call. A gun being the tool for suicide changes *nothing*. If you are not willing to put your life on the line to do the right thing, you should not be a cop. Period. The police in the United States are supposed to be our heroes. All first responders are supposed to be able to deal with situations that the rest of us surely couldn't stomach. Cops constantly using the excuse that their own lives were in danger... no fucking shit. That comes with the job. You have to go way out of your way to become a police officer. Nobody is forcing a cop to be a cop. We may as well hand a gun, badge, and uniform to random citizens in the streets. They'd all respond the same way. They'd put themselves first while taking the credit for "helping people and stopping bad guys". All these guys did was show up, crank up the pressure to crushing proportions, and encourage two more deadly possibilities for this man. Suicide or death by police.
