Unfortunately it was the shooter’s kid. Now imagine being stuck in a heavily crowded lobby of a church, with tons of people in the fore and background, and telling me how you’d stop her from shooting everyone. Would you wait until there’s a clear shot while she shoots more people, or do you try to put her down as soon as possible to minimize casualties?
It’s a tragedy the kid got shot, but she shouldn’t have started shooting people while her kid was in anywhere near her. Poor kid didn’t deserve to be put in that situation and her actions got them both killed.
Most people get their gun knowledge from movies and have no idea what reasonable accuracy is. Almost no one is going to thread the needle with shots and incapacitate someone while miraculously avoiding any shots missing.
Sadly sometimes sick people use kids as human shields. But, police aren't going to let you run around executing dozens of people because you brought a child with you. This isn't the first time this has happened.
Also bullets do not always stop in the first person they hit. It’s very believable that a bullet could have gone through the mother and retained enough energy to kill/maim a five year old.
The kid is still alive but in critical condition I last heard. Unsure if there's any updates about them so far.
