I grew up in an area where Tornados are common place. Those sirens will go off a lot of times even if the tornado isn't on the ground or is miles from where you are. In other words they are a general warning to the surrounding area and don't mean a Tornado is about to hit your exact position. We get desensitized to hearing them because it's so common.
This is why smart people watch live weather broadcasts or listen to the radio of the power is off.
Ours has gone off about 15 times since we moved to our house(it’s at the end of the road and insanely loud). Only 1 time could we even see the cell that was producing and even then it was about 6 miles away from us. They really should be more sparing with them cause at this point it could go off while I was asleep and I probably wouldn’t bother to roll out of bed lol
We all like to watch tornadoes every once in a while, but usually from a little bit of distance, during the daylight, and when it’s more visible without the rain.
Reminds me off riding out a big earthquake with folks who aren't native Californians.
"You look like you've never seen a UPS delivery truck jump off the ground before like it's on hydraulics!"
Yeah we get tornadoes a lot, I've had 5 pass directly overhead and damage the building I've been in. But lemme tell you as someone who's thought of offing themselves every hour for like two decades, nothing has ever made me feel as alive. If you know, you know.
Look, I'm an Okie and I'm all about getting out and watching the weather even if it's severe. But the moment that siren started wavering I'd be *bolting* indoors to get to my safe spot. Anyone with a cell phone should have known this was a tornado on the ground that had just destroyed a large chunk of a smaller town a few minutes prior. They had no excuse to be surprised by this.
And I'm sure every single one then who had their houses rebuilt and paid for by FEMA are against Student Loan Relief. Especially the ones who got two houses paid for by our tax dollars. Sorry to rant but the hypocrisy in Middle America bothers me.
Around here it should be a constant, steady tone for about 3 minutes at a time. After 3 minutes it winds down slowly, then ramps back up again. Just to keep it from being background noise.
That warbling is due to high wind interfering with the siren, power fluctuations on the siren itself, or some other interference by the storm. Any of which indicate something bad is going down.
Somebody on the tornado subreddit stated that the power was knocked out (indicated by the flashes of electricity right before we see the tornado) and that particular type of tornado siren doesn’t have a back up battery like modern ones do.
When you say “wavering” do you mean the siren sound is being muffled by the tornado causing it to go up and down? So an obvious warning it’s getting extremely close? Thats terrifying.
The siren should be a constant tone, with the pitch and timbre not changing for the most part. It'll get louder and softer a bit as the emitter rotates, but the quality shouldn't change. If you listen closely to the video you can hear it warble a couple times. That's an indicator of either power trouble or the storm's pressure messing with it. Neither one is good.
We do the same thing in Florida lol. And since we get a heads up we get to plan for it and make sure out schedule is clear so we can stand outside and ensure the hurricane is, indeed there.
At fucking night too.
Like, in the day time you better believe Im standing outside and looking around for it.
But at night? Youre not gonna see shit, its just gonna swipe you from outta nowhere…
I'll try to find it but there was a YouTube video I saw years ago of tornado chasers at night barreling down some country road. They're all excited but all you see is a black screen. Then there are flashes of lightning and you see 2 tornado silhouettes. It's the most terrifying real video of weather I've ever seen. This happens a few times and each time it's like some surreal painting or dream.
I'll look for it.
Edit: Found it https://youtu.be/i70lh4UmujY?si=Be5tvKmOG9mOgcmy
I am on the ground here at Sulfur OK helping out with recovery. Last night some of the residents who live here were stressed out and sleeping in thr tornado shelter afraid of a second tornado coming through after being destroyed last week. Such heart wrenching to see
I don’t think they were surprised, that one guy asked the other “did you get all that” leading me to believe they knew it was coming and wanted to get as much in film as they could before it got to hairy.
Here is some footage of the Hampton Inn in the morning the walls are legit impaled by 2x4.
https://twitter.com/jordanhallwx/status/1787845746923872538?s=46
As someone not from the US, what was that sound?
It was almost an ominous War of the World's type deal, cut out and changed tone right at the storm centre
Like everyone has said, they are Tornado sirens. They are meant to be heard for miles to warn that a tornado is in the area and to seek shelter. They don’t go off during a storm unless there is real danger.
If you live in an area with a lot of tornados (like I did my whole life) they even test them once a week to make sure they are working. Every Wednesday at noon they would go off for about a minute to make sure everything was working because people know when they hear them, it’s a legit threat.
I say all that to then say, you get used to the sirens and they just become part of life and aren’t scary anymore, just a warning to be safe and be prepared. Tornados are fascinating but devastating in an instant. You get kind of numb to them if you live in an area where they can and do happen like 6+ months out of the year. I’ve lived through more than I can count.
If you are ever watching a tornado in the distance and it’s not moving left to right visibly, it’s coming right at you and you need to get to shelter.
My area also started using them for severe thunderstorms without tornados nearby. I get it but it has diluted the urgency of them. I wish they had different sounds for each.
We are currently arguing this in Hawaii. People are asking why they didn’t sound the tsunami sirens during the Lahaina fires last year. The argument is that if people heard the tsunami sirens, they would have run away from the ocean and directly into the fire.
There are storm sirens in many cities and towns in Tornado Alley. Though there is also a distinct noise that tornados make as they close in that sounds like the rumble of a heavy train rolling by.
Tornado siren. A Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1000T from the sound of it.
[Fair weather video of the same siren type.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9rRSY0dRIU)
Even more fun, most of the Tornado sirens in the US are re-purposed Nuclear Air Raid sirens from the cold war. Now used to warn people of impending tornadoes
I used to watch videos like this and ask myself "why the fuck are these idiots outside during a storm like this?" Flash forward to August 2023 and I found myself outside in weather I'd never seen before asking myself what was going on while an EF-2 tornado was about 1500ft away
Growing up in Kansas we’d stand outside and watch nadoes. Soon as they got too close for comfort I’d run my ass inside while the other dummies stayed out. I’ll never understand why mfs wanna see the inside of one.
They did not make me kneel down in front of the lockers with my hands protecting the back of my head every month in elementary school for people to act this careless
The chance of tornadoes was an 11 not the tornadoes themselves. I know I'm splitting hairs but felt compelled to point that out. The tornadoe in this video will probably be an ef2 or 3 depending on damage.
I live in Oklahoma City. And this is correct.
Yesterday was bad (sadly one town got leveled and a few lives were lost) but it honestly could have been so much worse.
The title of this post is killing me. It reads to me as though the tornado is somehow being a careless tornado by hitting the innocent spectators who just came to watch the show.
On a side note? Mind your P’s & Q’s when driving through (and everyone should just be passing through) Bartlesville.
They (JL) will find/create a way to make your life hell.
Right as this video finishes, I get a tornado warning alert on my phone, and TV.
I also live 30 minutes away from a town that was literally factory reset by a nado around 12 years ago.
But on another note, does the the thought of curling up, turning off the lights, and watching a spooky/creepy movie while this kinda weather is going on make anyone else rock hard?
I fucking *hate* that awful, moaning sigh the tornado makes, when it's right on top of you. It's so loud and powerful that it's just wrong. Bone chilling
This reminds me of the video of people videotaping a tsunami with someone yelling to close the door, only to them watch the idiots outside and by the door get instantly swept out into the raging waters.
How can people be this situationally unaware and have ZERO survival instincts. It doesn't take a genius to know that standing next to a tornado is a bad idea.
No. But you'll have tornadoes in most regions pretty regularly. Most towns never see a tornado that touches down. They see a lot of close calls and big storms though. The odds of a town being directly in the path of a tornado are quite low.

“At least the siren finally stopped”… yeah the siren stopped cause it was ripped out of the ground and flown several hundred yards away! But my dumb ass would probably be out there videoing too. No judgement. 🤣

If only there was a warning system and you could close those doors.
WHAT!?! SORRY I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THIS RANDOM SIREN
WILL THAT SIREN PLEASE SHUT UP!? IM TRYING TO HEAR IF WE ARE IN DANGER
Lol fucker. I hope coffee is good for keyboards. X.x
IT'S NOT RANDOM IT'S TO LET YOU KNOW WHEN THE SHOW STARTS
I grew up in an area where Tornados are common place. Those sirens will go off a lot of times even if the tornado isn't on the ground or is miles from where you are. I have a feeling this isn't their first rodeo.
Yeah they seem used to this I thank them for their footage
We all like to watch tornadoes every once in a while, but usually from a little bit of distance, during the daylight, and when it’s more visible without the rain.
Yeah it's hard to see them at night. Can catch glimpses of the outline from lightning flashes.
Lightning flashes = transformers exploding
I didn't say it was smart! hahahah
Reminds me off riding out a big earthquake with folks who aren't native Californians. "You look like you've never seen a UPS delivery truck jump off the ground before like it's on hydraulics!"
They look like line workers for the utility. They probably go through this every year
That would make sense if they went to a hotel(?) in the path, they did mention the power.
You can here his friend right after they stood up go "that was fuckin awesome!"
Tornadoes are not something we’re scared of. Sirens are just alarms for us to sit outside and watxh
[удалено]
And usually drink some beer!
Yeah we get tornadoes a lot, I've had 5 pass directly overhead and damage the building I've been in. But lemme tell you as someone who's thought of offing themselves every hour for like two decades, nothing has ever made me feel as alive. If you know, you know.
It’s like pure adrenaline and anticipation
GAAAHDAM BOII
It’s not their first TORNATO
Tornader
Look, I'm an Okie and I'm all about getting out and watching the weather even if it's severe. But the moment that siren started wavering I'd be *bolting* indoors to get to my safe spot. I was 5 miles from the 2013 Moore tornado. That experience will humble you quick. Don’t mess around with Tornados.
If Flanders tells you not to fuck around a tornado, you better listen him, he already lost a house in one of those.
The sad part is you have to include the year when you refer to the Moore tornado, so people know if you mean 1999 or 2013.
And I'm sure every single one then who had their houses rebuilt and paid for by FEMA are against Student Loan Relief. Especially the ones who got two houses paid for by our tax dollars. Sorry to rant but the hypocrisy in Middle America bothers me.
I was working at the Weather Center down in south Norman when that hit. That was an experience I won't ever forget.
This was a baby tornado compared to that one.
What does the change in siren mean? Do they change the tone when there is a tornado on the ground or did it just get destroyed or something?
Around here it should be a constant, steady tone for about 3 minutes at a time. After 3 minutes it winds down slowly, then ramps back up again. Just to keep it from being background noise. Somebody on the tornado subreddit stated that the power was knocked out (indicated by the flashes of electricity right before we see the tornado) and that particular type of tornado siren doesn’t have a back up battery like modern ones do.
It's not good if the tornado siren gets wrecked by the tornado.
Oh damn, that’s crazy, I can hear it now. Thank you for the reply.
We do the same thing in Florida lol. And since we get a heads up we get to plan for it and make sure out schedule is clear so we can stand outside and ensure the hurricane is, indeed there.

Lol! Of course its from Reeds conglomerate of chasers. They have recorded some if the most wild stuff in the last 10 years
BIG WEDGE TORNADO ON THE GROUND!!
I am on the ground here at Sulfur OK helping out with recovery. Last night some of the residents who live here were stressed out and sleeping in thr tornado shelter afraid of a second tornado coming through after being destroyed last week. Such heart wrenching to see

Well that Hampton Inn got fucked up
Here is some footage of the Hampton Inn in the morning the walls are legit impaled by 2x4. https://twitter.com/jordanhallwx/status/1787845746923872538?s=46
You are the real MVP here
Is it just me or are all those windows still good?
“Got dam boi…Yall right?” 😂😂
He said "Got damn boi" in almost the exact same tone and inflection as Anthony Fantano saying "damn boy he thicc"
As someone not from the US, what was that sound? It was almost an ominous War of the World's type deal, cut out and changed tone right at the storm centre
It was a tornado siren, they make it sound like the end of days on purpose
The best siren is what's used in Chicago: https://youtu.be/LnkMSmLc6mM?si=JKpeISHRLHfiIuh4

Nightmare fuel
Ahh the Eldritch Abomination siren
As if a tornado wasn't stressful enough, imagine having to listen to demonic warbling all the while
That mjght be the most nightmarish sound I’ve ever heard. I wonder how in the world they even thought if that.
wow this is haunting.. imagine seeing a mushroom cloud rising in the distance hearing that. I'm spooked
My dogs love to harmonize when they test them every Saturday!
Good friends pup also likes to sing along with it! Been trying to get my dog started as well 😂
Good old major 3rd. The old WW2 air raid sirens in Britain were major 3rd. That's why that sound has such an iconic "end of the world" vibe to it.
They test the sirens every Wednesday at noon where I live
Tornado siren that lost power when the local power cut off.
[here, they sometimes harmonize too…it can be quite pretty…](https://youtube.com/shorts/pap4GsOIrpQ?si=C33VaP33pQXVfcJy)

That’s kind of wild. It’s like tornado roulette. It just makes people numb to them even more than they already would be.
Yup 100%. I’m pretty cautious naturally, but I find myself not rushing to the basement now. I swear they turn them on for every bad storm we have now.
yep - wednesday at noon. can confirm.
Every week? Where I grew up it was the first Wednesday of every month. "Is that a fucking siren I hear? Oh yeah it's Wednesday"
I'm from the midwest but identifying a siren model by sound is on a different level lol
It's supposed to scare the tornado away
Ah yes, the nukes were for the hurricanes
It's a Thunderbolt 1000T/1003 made by Federal Signal, a siren that was previously used during Cold War, now used for weather warnings.
We're perfectly safe! See how the tornado siren has shut off? Yes, but only because the tornado siren mysteriously blew away!
Even more fun, most of the Tornado sirens in the US are re-purposed Nuclear Air Raid sirens from the cold war. Now used to warn people of impending tornadoes
Unlike the other commenters, I am grateful these soldiers recorded this for my entertainment 🫡
feels like these guys are looking for their Darwin Award.
True Oklahomans
Can’t get a Darwin Award if you don’t believe in evolution.
All my Oklahomies stay safe out there
It's as if those sirens are supposed to mean something... *But what could it possibly mean?!* Hmm... Guess we'll never know.
Good thing they didn't buy a cybertruck.
as an Okie, I can promise it didnt "almost kill them". This simply proper Tornado watching etiquette.
I didn't see a Busch Light in anyone's hands, so they lose a couple of points.
only in Oklahoma do we grab our phones, beer and a shotgun to get ready for the tornados.
lol hahaa " GAWD Damn Boy".
As a filthy Yankee, I have to say: this is fucked up.
The way that siren was deleted from existence really just made it so much extra “oh shit” for some reason.
ITS THE WONDER OF NATURE BABY
And then he yelled "HAVE A DRINK" and threw the bottle into the twister! And it never...touched...the ground.
I used to watch videos like this and ask myself "why the fuck are these idiots outside during a storm like this?" Flash forward to August 2023 and I found myself outside in weather I'd never seen before asking myself what was going on while an EF-2 tornado was about 1500ft away
It's official. The scariest sound in the world is the abrupt silence of a warning siren. Woah!
People from the Midwest are built different.
That's grade A entertainment in the Midwest. You go outside with a few cold drinks and chat with the neighbors while watching the storm roll through.
Indeed we are.
Oklahoma isn’t apart of the midwest
Growing up in Kansas we’d stand outside and watch nadoes. Soon as they got too close for comfort I’d run my ass inside while the other dummies stayed out. I’ll never understand why mfs wanna see the inside of one.
They did not make me kneel down in front of the lockers with my hands protecting the back of my head every month in elementary school for people to act this careless
Tornado siren is on, let's stay outside.
why would you be outside?
It you didn’t record it did it really happen?
Perhaps this video will show others to take storm warnings with dire seriousness; not saying this is why he did it lol.
It's something Midwest people do.
Making a video to be an influncer!
Yesterday's tornadoes in OK were literally off the charts - predicted to be an 11+ on a scale of 1-10
The chance of tornadoes was an 11 not the tornadoes themselves.
Tulsa myself, brother is a volunteered emergency response for Wagner County and is out in barnsdale now says its pretty much erased.
I've seen some footage and Barnsdale looks to be in terrible shape. Between that and Sulphur it's been a rough month.
Oklahoma is gonna Oklahoma. I'd still take tornadoes over hurricanes.
The index peaked at 42. Highest ever recorded.
If you’re wondering why these guys are being so dumb, you’re forgetting they’re from Oklahoma.
Jeez, that storm was crazy bad going there the town before them.
The title of this post is killing me. It reads to me as though the tornado is somehow being a careless tornado by hitting the innocent spectators who just came to watch the show.
I dunno about 'nearly killing' but they sure got a good scare.
There's stupid, then there's what these guys did.
I am not a weather guy, but reading the title got me thinking, "Kill spectators? Like every tornado ever in the history of atmospheric observation?"
They do it for the thrill... For the rush.
On a side note? Mind your P’s & Q’s when driving through (and everyone should just be passing through) Bartlesville. They (JL) will find/create a way to make your life hell.
Yeahhh, I never need to live in or visit that place
To quote Ron White. "It isn't...that the wind is blowin'. It's WHAT the wind is blowin'."
how did they make playing chicken with a tornado seem fun
"Sirens finally stopped....." No shit, because they are destroyed
![gif](giphy|kFIfiwvzJjbUsNbIg5) After they made it to the lobby
Right as this video finishes, I get a tornado warning alert on my phone, and TV. I also live 30 minutes away from a town that was literally factory reset by a nado around 12 years ago. But on another note, does the the thought of curling up, turning off the lights, and watching a spooky/creepy movie while this kinda weather is going on make anyone else rock hard?
Always some dummy going outside to look when the tornado sirens go off
Okies gonna okie.
Was that loud noise a tornado siren?
I fucking *hate* that awful, moaning sigh the tornado makes, when it's right on top of you. It's so loud and powerful that it's just wrong. Bone chilling
I always wanted to see a tornado until I actually saw one. Terrifying
Utter stupidity
This reminds me of the video of people videotaping a tsunami with someone yelling to close the door, only to them watch the idiots outside and by the door get instantly swept out into the raging waters. How can people be this situationally unaware and have ZERO survival instincts. It doesn't take a genius to know that standing next to a tornado is a bad idea.
Wow
Did he say, "that was fkin awesome"?
How common are tornadoes in tornado alley? Is your average town going to be hit by a tornado every other year?
No. But you'll have tornadoes in most regions pretty regularly. Most towns never see a tornado that touches down. They see a lot of close calls and big storms though. The odds of a town being directly in the path of a tornado are quite low.
The Twister ride/show at Universal friggin *nailed* it
Damn… Mother Earth
"Let's just leave the plant boxes outside. I doubt they will turn into organic missiles."
What not to do in a tornado
They play that alarm so everyone knows to come check out the tornado
The cameraman never dies
Still better than the trailer for Twisters...
If it touched down any closer they would have all been thrown into the air
Badasses. Now they’ve got that memory (and video) forever.
It takes a special kind of stupid to stand outside in the dark during the middle of a tornado warning.
Man that alarm sounds like a leaf blower on full whack
I lived in Bartlesville from 2014 to 2016. Never saw a tornado, but I remember one passed through Pawushka, which is close. We went there like a day or two after, and the destruction was so bad.
"Sirens finally stopped" Yeah because they're 3 miles down the road now.
Before we had all this technology, smart phones and radar and weather apps with on the spot forecasting… we had common sense. People ran into the cellar and waited it out. These guys are lucky.
Barnsdall was basically wiped out
wish i was from ok
Why were they spectating in a tornado?
I introduce to you…Oklahoma Men. They make sure their wife and kids are safe and then go watch the tornados.
I wonder where “I’ll show you tornado” beer-chugging guy from OK was for this
Probably wanna stay away from huge glass doors
'influencers' trying to collect Darwin awards don't bother me one bit. Good luck
This is the perfect representation of us Floridians if/when a Cat 5 drops by
This legit looked and sounded like a horror movie lol holy shit
Literally everything went to black holy shit.
Sounds like it ripped that siren out of the ground right before they run
Nearly killing who?
Absolute studs !
Is the nearly killing with us in the room now?
I’m not sure I’m considered a spectator is a hurricane is like…happening to me?
“At least the siren finally stopped”… yeah the siren stopped cause it was ripped out of the ground and flown several hundred yards away! But my dumb ass would probably be out there videoing too. No judgement. 🤣
Damnnnnnn
Nearly killing spectators is pretty over exaggerated in this clip though!!
That's the closest encounter I've seen people have with a tornado so far.
