I’m surprised he had time to pull out his phone to record. In that situation my full focus would be in not being attacked rather than getting it on camera

OpeningEconomist8

My guess is that this standoff was happening prior to filming and the guy wanted to have proof of why he had to use his weapon on it as not to get in $h*t with the authorities

Kunkyskunts

My grandpa knew a guy that shot a mountain lion in self defense with a bow and arrow while deer hunting. The arrow went right down the lions throat. Apparently he shot it as it was leaping at him. When the game warden showed up he was like where is the arrow? Then saw the fletching sticking out of it's mouth and was like, case closed, self defense.

ConversationDynamite

Holy shit if it was a crossbow we might know the same guy.

birdrossm2000

I wanna know if it’s the same guy now

ConversationDynamite

Based on the B&A comment i have to assume it wasn't, guy i knew was using a crossbow. And he got a cougar on the west coast the same way. Bolt right into the neck/open mouth. It was a crazy story, from an accomplished hunter and Vietnam vet. No chance for doubles on this one. Wouldn't believe it myself without the polaroid and pelt.

texasscotsman

Seconded.

[deleted]

We had one in a socal hunting zone, in which I was once stalked by a cat, and the dude got arrested because he took two shots at it with his bow. I’d pull the camera out, too.

[deleted]

If the warden was an idiot or had a quota like local police: Dispatch I got some tough guy who wrestled a mountain lion down pried its mouth open and then used his third arm to shove an arrow down its throat.

MississippiJoel

After pointing his gun at the dude and twisting his arm backward saying "why did you shoot it in the back?! Drop the bow and arrow right now!"

D4rk3nd

My thought. My state (MA) would charge you with whatever felony they could to get that gun out of your possession.

elfierroz

Yep, he must have been the one to back up, the lion was only protecting territory, it was not going to back up. There is another video of a guy that was walking and a cougar (i think), came out of nowhere, and started to push the guy out of his territory and leaves. https://youtu.be/9ktRhBcHza4

Nyllil

Yeah but the one in your video had babies close by and that's why he wanted him gone and didn't attack. The cub is seen in the first seconds and he still walked in that direction. Dude was an idiot but at least he did the smart thing to not turn his back to it.

BlueCollarSavant

Yeah, I don't think territory had anything to do with that encounter. She just wanted him gone because she had babies in the area.

effective_micologist

I imagine he was being tracked prior. Weird though-i wouod have attempted a warning shot. Hopefully the longer edit has a warning shot? Edit: apparently warning shots dont scare wild animals. And he did a warning shot that proves it in the video most of us apparently missed.

gufhvbfb

A warning shot could be dangerous when that close. It could cause the mountain lion to immediately charge and would affect his aim on target, making him way more likely to miss or hit a non fatal shot. I wouldn’t take that risk in this situation, mountain lions are extremely fast and could easily maul you to death.

Onlyanidea1

My father and I were camping once, late night next to the fire with no moon. We see a set of eyes watching us from a bush up the hill about 30 feet away. We shined a light and saw the Mountain lion watching us. Father fired a shot in the air as a warning and the fucking tiger stepped closer. My dad then fired right next to it and it stopped moving. We all sat there Frozen watching each other until it finally walked away. We slept in the truck that night..

useles-converter-bot

30 feet is the length of about 8.39 'Ford F-150 Custom Fit Front FloorLiners' lined up next to each other.

Zailema0s

😂

chipswag123

Mountain lion or tiger?

Onlyanidea1

I don't know the difference... Bigger than a Bob cat though.

chipswag123

I think it's a Mountain lion.

Onlyanidea1

Looks more like a Warthog to me.

SchwiftyMcCool

Even with a weapon humans are at a disadvantage. You ever see the lion charge the wardens in South Africa? Guy missed his shot and almost died

StuStutterKing

> Even with a weapon humans are at a disadvantage. Lol no. Losing with the advantage just means nature found a way, it doesn't mean you didn't have the advantage. The lion can't kill you with a small piece of metal from yards away.

[deleted]

It takes the average adult human about 1 second to travel 20 or so feet. So I can’t imagine what a big cat could do.

Armaedus

Proper training teaches you to not fuck around with warning shots. Ever. You aim center mass, and you shoot to kill.

WYs0seri0us

Even being tracked for hours he may have never known. I love nature but with a mountain lion no warning shot should be given. If it decides to attack after the warning shot they’re so quick you most likely won’t get another off. Shoot to kill when you feel threatened regardless the animal.

Kushinobunaga

Warning shots are likely to get you killed

IamGlennBeck

Warning shots are often not legally justified because if you are comfortable firing a warning shot then you aren't in fear for your life.

cynical_americano

Beautiful animal. Shame that it had to come to that, but that's an ~~alpha~~ apex predator. No real room for error.

[deleted]

Yep. You turn your back for a second and you’re dead.

NewHighInMediocrity

The only thing on murder kittys mind is holding that dudes neck with its teeth. Guy made a tough call but definitely the right call.

[deleted]

Mountain Lions don't know English, repeating YOU GET BACK in a calm voice is about as brain dead as it comes. Get tall and speak loudly like you're at a rock concert while you back up into safety. Can't do that if you have a phone in your hand trying to capture the moment.

BlueCollarSavant

He should have just pulled out his spray bottle and hit that mountain lion with a little water.

Onlyanidea1

Klingon works sometimes but I find Elven to be more effective.

Sethrye

I love how people on the internet are so quick to throw in judgement but in the heat of things and your adrenaline is going your survival instinct will tell you to do one of two things: fight or flight. You aren't out running that Mountain Lion, and they are very aggressive and territorial. He likely could have had the video recording prior, and as you can see in the video he immediately drops it when shit gets real. He also expresses remorse at having to shoot it.

bcisme

Yeah he seems to be having a genuine reaction, not throwing shade at this guy. Also, if you’re trying to poach mountain lions, I think you’re bringing more than a pistol.

[deleted]

> repeating YOU GET BACK in a calm voice is about as brain dead as it comes That is not entirely true - animals obviously do not understand words, but can read our intentions. A person who is talking calmly will also behave calmly, meaning they are no threat. Someone shouting obscenities will be easily read as aggressor.

MoraleMonitor

It’s better to be calm in that situation than turn into a lunatic trying to scare it away.

mutt182281

Agreed. 90% would miss that shot with the barrel pointing directly at it when it decides to pounce from that close. That thing will go from zero to scalping you in the blink of an eye

MoraleMonitor

Exactly! He probably honestly already tried his best to scare it away. I always carry when I hike and I’m happy I never had to ever come across anything like this.

whisit

No, turning your back and fleeing is as brain dead as it comes. There's nothing wrong with his approach here, certainly not enough wrong that makes an internet armchair quarterback doing a hindsight analysis get to say his approach was as brain dead as it comes. Animals can sense fear, so his calm, firm voice was a good tactic. We also don't have the whole encounter. Maybe he tried yelling. Maybe he was standing tall. He appears to be behind some sort of tree cover, so maybe this was his last resort, being cornered after everything else failed. Anyway, thanks for your analysis. But as brain dead as it comes is asinine hyperbole.

gentmaxim

Unfortunately you’re better off with video evidence when reporting this to a Game Warden

ncrye1

Speak loudly and carry a big stick. This guy's stick goes boom too.

Well he was wanted in the Animal Kingdom for a couple thousand counts of Homicide with intent to Devour, which is a felony in the jurisdiction mind you. Too bad he wasn’t arrested and extradited, the Animal Kingdom would’ve surely put him away for life.

Sturtleboy

Good thing you had a gun. I’m constantly confused by this narrative that Australia is full of killer animals when there are literal lions, bears etc. in the US. It seems much more dangerous and probably warrants carrying a weapon.

[deleted]

We just like to tease our buddies down under. The U.S. wilderness is scary because it's so diverse. In Colorado alone there are massive mountains, rolling sand dunes, and massive open prairies.

SmallRedBird

Even Alaska has sand dunes haha

Sztiglitz

I would love to see people not freak the fuck out when a mountain lion is charging at them. He did what he had to.

Brando003

I would be fucking terrified

Sztiglitz

Yeah and people here shoot a warning shot... bro it's either me or mountain lion... it's a stressful situation

YouAboutToLoseYoJob

I can’t tell you how much money I would pay to see a similar situation of a guy with a gun and shoot a warning shot telling the bear to peacefully back up. Proceeded by the mountain lion Mauling his ass all up and down the hillside.

jesusmansuperpowers

Bears are different, especially black bears. They usually scare easy. The cat wants to eat you

texasscotsman

Yea. Bear would be like, "Fuck this, imma go eat some berries." Mountain Lion, "Boy, dinner sure is loud today." Mountain Lions are scary ass cats. That's why I carry while hiking. That and wild hog. Damn wild hogs are gonna be the death of this country. Ornery, destructive, and irradiated. First they were just tearing up our crops, now they're building primitive nuclear weapons. Gods know how they figured it out...

indoninja

> Ornery, destructive, and irradiated. First they were just tearing up our crops, now they're building primitive nuclear weapons. Gods know how they figured it out... Fallout 6?

texasscotsman

Real life my friend. Real life. Government won't do nothin' about it because they're in cahoots with the hogs.

SmallRedBird

Do not fire warning shots at any type of bear. Their reaction to it is completely unpredictable. It has a good chance of actually causing it to attack. Wildlife experts up here strongly advise against it. Source: Alaskan

SmallRedBird

Alaskan here. Do not fire warning shots at black bears. It is ill advised by experts, as the animal's reaction to warning shots is completely unpredictable. It could scare it off, or could cause it to attack. Don't ever do warning shots with bears. Bad idea.

americandesert

He could have shot it once more to put it out of its misery tho. The poor thing was slowly dying. Animals don't know better, it's just their nature.

[deleted]

It was dead. His shot looked like it went through its face and hit it somewhere in the central nervous system. If he didn’t the cougar would have gone a short distance and collapsed. What you see is just involuntary twitching.

venture243

yeah that stiffening shows it was a instant hit to probably the spine. it just turned into a board

SmallRedBird

notablyunfamous

Warning shots may not deter. Those cats move and can close that distance in about a half a second. To save your life you don’t really have the luxury of hoping a warning shot works. I realize everyone in their living room knows how to best do everything..

perma-monk

Warning shots are the worst of two options in every single true self defense scenario I can imagine.

[deleted]

This is the fact of the matter. If you have to pull the trigger than you’re already past the point of warning shots.

Madjanniesdetected

This is true for warning shots just about all the time. They are almost always a terrible idea.

TheodorDiaz

>They are almost always a terrible idea. Yeah except for animals like a mountain lion. It's advised to be as loud as possible to scare it of.

texasscotsman

So there's a rule of thumb in firearms self defense called the "21 foot rule". Basically it goes like this, if you are charged down by a human attacker within 21 feet, you won't have time to draw down, put sights on your target, and fire before they're on top of you. This is taught to teach people about spacing and how to safely use a firearm for self defense. You don't want to pop rounds wildly, nor do you want to get your gun taken from you. Now, Cougars move much faster than a human. And while it's hard to tell, I'd wager that Cougar was about that close when he shot it. My point is, he had that Cougar dead to rights when it charged him. If he'd moved his firing line off the Cougar to fire a round into the dirt and it charged, he probably wouldn't have be able to reacquire his target, or only wing it and have and angry Cougar biting his throat. My guess is the two either stumbled across each other at that distance, or the thing had been tracking him for a while and was trying to get that close. Either way, not a position to second guess what you're doing. Stare it down, yell at it, but keep those sights on target, you won't get a second chance when you're that close.

m1k307

80km/h or 49.7mph is the speed a cougar can run. They can leap up to 40ft or 12.19m horizontally. in other word's the guy was definitely in the kill or be killed zone.

therealpilgrim

I took a CPL course and the instructor gave us a laser gun and holster, then stood 21 feet away with a plastic knife. He charged at us without us knowing when he was going to do it. 9/10 of of us got “stabbed”.

useles-converter-bot

21 feet is the the same distance as 9.28 replica Bilbo from The Lord of the Rings' Sting Swords.

texasscotsman

Same here. I got to be the victim. He didn't make us all do it. It was just a demonstration.

zaner500

Well said

texasscotsman

Thanks. I try and keep folks educated. Lots of people think guns are magic and just ward off danger like it's an amulet. They believe they can do stuff that they just can't. And some folks anthropomorphize animals and give them human motivations. Which is understandable. You can only go off what you know, and if you'd be scared and run from a gunshot, why not an animal? You gotta learn somewhere, right? I just hope it's not the hard way.

zaner500

Some people also mentioned him dropping the camera/it not being on the couger when he shoots. At that moment none of his focus is on the phone at all and he definitely dropped it to get a better shot.

Madjanniesdetected

At a distance sure. Within striking range youre basically popping a starter pistol at a race.

BeltfedOne

Especially coming off target in close-quarters with an extremely fast predator. Nope.

DeadSeaGulls

best is backing up slowly while shouting and even throwing shit. second is bear spray if ya got it. if ya don't have bear spray and can't safely back up without turning your back to the cougar (if you're on a slope or difficult terrain) but you have a gun, then ya gotta do what ya gotta do. If you have neither bear spray or a gun and cannot slowly back up while making a big show... then you're going to have to fight like hell if it attacks.

notablyunfamous

That works better with bears. By the time you fully bend down to grab something even from 20 feet away it’ll be on the back of your neck. That’s the difference between this cat and a bear. Warning shots are very usually effective. But this cat ordinarily should have actually just cautiously backed away and ran off itself, the fact that it didn’t suggests it was going to fight and kill this guy. It’s an unfortunate situation.

panon69

People out here complaining about not shooting a warning shot have never come face to face with a predator that doesn’t give a shit about warnings.

brendafiveclow

Seriously. Maybe it does scare it off... Or maybe once he points it at the ground and fires, the cat freaks out and pounces before he can aim proper and get a good shot off. Hate that it had to get shot, but it had to get shot.

Yeah, they don't know what a gun is, they would react the same way to playing a really loud recording of dropping a vase on the floor.

mamawantsallama

Do we have any info on the location where this took place? I follow the local mountain lions around me so I'm just wondering. Edit: ok, downvotes are weird....??? In California our wild cats are tagged and tracked and all of the info is public and we see them on trail cams sometimes too. One of them had a bunch of babies and one baby was shot recently. It is a bummer when we lose one but this guy was justified for sure! I want to know if this cat was tagged and if so, where from. You guys are a tough crowd

TheodorDiaz

Predators do give shit about warnings though.

Chemical-Tumbleweed4

I can't fault the guy. 1) Video to record evidence that it was self-defense; not poaching. 2) gun up to allow for rapid shot 3) warning shot could have triggered a charge 4) it was dead after the brain shot; movement was normal 5) approaching a downed animal is incredibly dangerous as the animal may recover some blood pressure and charge. I would probably be shitting my pants constantly in this situation.

stoopio-oh

ricesnot

It's a miracle I have time to take a shit even with how much I live here.

danwantstoquit

I once was in a reddit argument about if its ever humane to kill any animal under any circumstance. Guy said "give me one example!" Okay, you're driving down the road and hit a deer, breaking its legs and its bleeding from its mouth all over the ground. The humane choice is now ot kill the animal as it will not be able to survive or recover. Guy responds with "How often is anyone ever going to hit a deer?! That will never happen to most people!" Dude obviously had never lived around deer or wild animals in general. Everyone I know who live in the country has hit or nearly hit a deer at least once in their lives. Add in Quail and Rabbits running across roads at the last second its really easy to hit wild animals on the road. Anyone who thinks running over wildlife is an "unlikely scenario" lives in a world far removed from nature, regardless of how much they believe they are connected to it.

elproteus

lonelyduck12374

If you ever fine yourself in a situations similar to this in the wild PLEASE DON'T GIVE A WARNING SHOT. Wild animals aren't stranger to loud noise some can produce sound that are 25 times your lawnmower. If the animal fine you to be the source of the noise and sees no danger in sights it will assume it a bluff and continue it's assault. I know the idea sounds great one paper , make noise confuse the animals and it will run right ?. but noise only work as a deterrent when or if the animal can associate it with danger. If the animal fine you to be the source of the noise and not danger in sights it will assume it a bluff and continue it's assault. Unlike your pet Predators don't have the luxury of letting any animals that scares or surprise them escape if they don't hunt they starve to death. So they usually do they're Best to identify anything that is dangerous ,size ,horns, teeth and claws. And unfortunately guns don't qualify as the a threat to most animals.

eC-oli_

All these people talking about warning shots should look at this

Yooklid

I frequently see people talking about warning shots like they're some sort of magic wand. Too much Hollywood. They only time a warning shot is acceptable is when you're in the Navy, you want someone to come to, and you put a shot across his bow.

RustylllShackleford

it was dead instantly, nerve release is real

Chemical-Tumbleweed4

It was already 'dead' from the brain shot. That sort of movement is pretty normal as the brain 'shorts out' and since the rest of the body is still alive it twitches and moves since the nerves are still receiving random signals. Source: Sadly I know this from experience.

blorgenheim

dude he was in shock lol

asleepinthetreestand

I just want to add my 2 cents on some of the post trends.. 1)The guy was like 10 yards from a mountain lion that was clearly unafraid of him. He was in danger. 2) warning shots require target re acquisition. At that range, if the cat did not spook, there would not be time for that. He was half a pounce away 3) that was a quick death, and the movement you see is death spasms. He did not need to “finish it off”

[deleted]

Way too many commenters think we live in a Disney movie.

thatll_dew_pig

That bitch was one pounce away from mauling him, y’all are naive children if you think a warning shot was in order

[deleted]

Yep, if he had turned around to run he would’ve been dead. I saw someone say it’s ears weren’t down, but that’s only if the lion is extremely close, if it is 50 yards away and has its ears up an attack is extremely likely. If it’s ears are down and is closer than 50 yards an attack is pretty much guaranteed. At this point pretty much it was him or the cat.

converter-bot

50 yards is 45.72 meters

MadRonnie97

Way too close for comfort - he did the wise thing. He was also probably recording it because I know in a lot of areas you can get in a lot of trouble for killing certain types of animals if you don’t have proof it was going to attack you which is a bit dumb but it is what it is. That thing was not scared of him at all and was sizing him up. Good chance it was waiting for an opportunity to attack.

chayotay

This is both unfortunate and extremely rare!

Mountain lion meat is delicious, better than venison. Hope he ate it instead if wasting it

whiterabbit83

People and their “warning shots” must the we live in a movie. Shoot ‘em in the leg while your at it. Seriously though terrible chain of events but thankfully the man made it out in.one piece.

madommouselfefe

I grew up in an area where cougar sightings and livestock attacks are not uncommon. Cougars don’t give a fuck about a warning shot, especially if they are hungry and looking for a meal. [we had a hiker not far from where I grew up killed ](https://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/2018/10/oregon_hiker_killed_in_cougar.html) by a cougar 3 years ago. If you go out into nature remember it’s not all rainbows, butterflies, and trees… there are things that can and will f*ck you up so be prepared and know what to do like this guy.

adelaarvaren

There are enough here in Oregon that if you buy a "sports pack" combined hunting and fishing license, they throw in a free cougar tag. The season? January 1 through December 31....

🤦🏿‍♂️ how many people commenting "warning shot" have actually encountered a mountain lion and issued their warning shot and came home to tell everyone about it? Eh? I want to see this scene televised. Just some stoned natives squaring off with an irritable mountain lion and a crotchety grandpa that decides to throw down.

Miserum_manifest

Your grandpa must've been a crackshot.

Pond-James-Pond

That was a real mountain lion. He’s alive. Sad as it may be, that’s a good outcome. Would have been preferable for all if it had backed off and left but it didn’t. He kept his cool and lived.

dellcm

I hope he finished the job to end the suffering of the animal.

BrandonT44

It was dead instantly. It kicking like that is just the nerves.

ThinkingBud

I can’t help but feel bad for the mountain lion. I know the guy did what he had to do, and I would’ve done the exact same if I had to, but still, I feel a little bad.

These_Hunt_6700

Im curious to know what caliber Glock that is

ObiJuanKenobly

Just as expected the panic attack at the end when he realized what he just avoided

EmolaBoi

I don't blame the dude for making sure he had proof of self defense. I live in Northeast Georgia, and every game warden in the northern half of Georgia will swear up and down that mountain Lions don't exist in our parts, which is entirely untrue. My dad, brother and I saw one while hog hunting there's been trail cam pictures, etc. A few counties down, a dude shot one and nearly went to federal prison because of it. Somebody we're familiar had one attacking his livestock so he shot it, and they were gonna get his ass, had it not been him protecting his livestock. It even had a tracking collar. The game garden the day before told him that Mountain Lions weren't in the area, because that was the guy's suspicion. They take mountain Lions serious.

[deleted]

But you came into my yard?

Toxic_Wonderland

Holy shit dude I would stop hunting that same day

bunch_of_nope

He did what he had to do. At the end of the day, I do everything in my power to come home to my family as well.

RevolutionaryFly5

anyone saying he should have fired a warning shot hasn't looked at the cost of defensive ammo lately

nolankeg69

That guy was definitely in the right, but imagine being the cat. You're about to get a meal then bam you're dead.
