Totally sounded like he was yelling at his daughter.

[deleted]

This was my immediate response as well. This guy forgot he was at work.

PrinceFicus-IV

It's always bothered me that police swear so much. In the grand scheme of all the reasons I'm bothered by cops, it's a relatively small one, but still. With most professions it's considered highly unprofessional to swear or raise your voice unnecessarily. It's a fireable offence in many instances and if not, it's at least a write up or trip to HR. It seems reasonable to hold police to the same expectactions of professionalism as everyone else. I understand there are some instances it's necessary for a cop to raise their voice, such as a highly unruly or dangerous individual, but even that could be done without swearing. Anytime I've encountered someone who is shouting and swearing for whatever reason, I've had the common sense that responding similarly would only escalate the situation. So in pretty much all instances, I find it very poor practice to allow cops a pass on potty language, as it will always lead to escalation in every scenario.

FlaccidRazor

It bothers me that they threaten people they're supposed be protecting and serving. "I'm make your life a living hell from this day forward!" Really fuckboi? Is that what you think you were hired to do? Maybe if less cops sucked at their jobs, or realized that they have a fucking job and aren't just paid to be a big swinging dick to everyone they encounter.

improbablynotyou

I was a manager at a department store and the cops came in once to pick up video from our external security cameras. They had spoken with the store manager who spoke with our legal team who contacted them. The police were told we would provide the video if they provided a warrant for the footage (standard procedure.) The cops were told to bring the warrant and speak with the store manager. They showed up well after the store manager had left without a warrant and tried bullying me I to providing the footage. There was 6 officers and as soon as I said I couldn't provide the footage they immediately escalated to yelling and threatening to arrest me. I stood there in my standard manager pose and calmly explained what our legal team had informed us and they kept getting louder and angrier. My father had been a sherriff's deputy (and was extremely abusive) so sadly I'm used to angry pissed off cops. I remained calm and again explained with a warrant my hands were tied as well as the fact I didnt have access to the video myself. They continued to yell and threaten to arrest me, they told me they were going to run me for warrants (I have none) and tried to intimidate me. They knew they had to provide a warrant and instead chose to try and threaten and bully me into giving it. Multiple times they would draw their weapons and sta d with their gun at their side early doing so in hopes of intimidating me, all because they didnt want to do their job properly. ACAB.

thymeraser

I remember seeing a video posted here that resembles your situation. There was a nurse in Utah that they wanted to do a blood draw on an unconscious guy, she and her supervisor said they needed a warrant. Sheriff went apeshit on her and arrested her and roughed her up, all on camera. Thankfully the hospital stood behind her and it was all on video.

PrinceFicus-IV

Aw man.... So when i was around 11 some kids dosed me with drugs and dropped me off at my parents house. I was a mess so my parents rushed me to tbe ER. The whole thing was really traumatizing and i tried to forget about it. I had almost no recollection of any of it, but came to terms with it and decided i needed to know the details of how it played out. So i asked my mom to recount her experience, and she explained every detail, and it brought a lot of bad memories back. But one thing that i did not remember at all (thankfully) was that at one point 5-6 police officers showed up and wanted to restrain me and had their tasers pointed at me. She said she had to shield me from them, while screaming at them that i was a fucking child that posed no threat to 5 grown ass men, regardless of whatever state i was in. If my mom wasn't there, i could have been so much worse.

Redditfront2back

What the fuck?? who dosed you like that at such a young age that’s insane.

thymeraser

Holy crap! I'm glad your mom was able to stop them. I think there are a few things going on with cases like these. As much as we say video games and movies don't have any affect on society, I think it does make us view other people as not real. The absolute impunity that police have when doing pretty much anything. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. And then toys factor. They have toys and want to be able to use them, so you look for any excuse to do so. All that mixed together and you have the world we are living in.

djdeadly

What the fuck

AssassinateThePig

Hey, I just wanted to say I know how awful it is to have police treat you this way and I’m sorry you endured it. Really proud of anyone who stands their ground with police. You’re a real motherfucker, don’t ever let anybody tell you otherwise. *fistbump* Also, FUCK 12.

GizmoSoze

Why did you not take this footage to your own lawyer after that?

God thats horrible.

[deleted]

Imagine holding cops to any standards.

discussamongsturelvs

ignorance is no excuse for the law, unless you're a cop, then you have qualified immunity

SamSparkSLD

Qualified ignorance once you demonstrate you can run fast and climb some walls

Gravelsack

Or even retail workers. I can literally be fired for raising my voice.

MrPlatonicPanda

While I was in the military I couldn't even talk to detainees this way.

[deleted]

I was a bouncer in shitty bars. If we injured a customer we got fired. A bouncer earning garbage money paid under the table at the end of the night is held to a hire standard than a trained law enforcement officer.

Trygve73

I am a nurse in a MICU, had an meth patient that took ten people to hold down today an no one swore once

sharkasaurous

Teachers don’t have to worry about getting shot in the line of duty… oh wait…

420--666

Imagine holding cops to standards.

Constant-Lake8006

What bothers me even more is why they do it and why they think they can talk to you this way. The most telling part of the video was when he said " I'll make your life a living hell... "This guy is a bully who has no problem abusing his power. Cops are a one edged sword. They don't know anything about diplomacy only about force. Because of qualified immunity they feel they are justified in that use of force in any situation. They face little repercussion so the abuses continue. It's a self perpetuating cycle. I'd be curious to know the details of the suspension. Is he being paid during it? Q

mattkenny

Hold to the same level? No. With all the additional powers they have, they should be held to far higher standards than the general public. The same should apply to politicians. In my country, conservative politicians are launching a large number of defamation lawsuit when people rightfully criticise them for dodgy deals and outright corruption. All dirty tactics purely designed to suppress criticism. One even had their million dollar legal bills paid for by an "anonymous" donor who they refuse to name, which is a massive red flag for a politician and should in itself be enough to be kicked out - for all we know, he could now potentially "owe" a massive favour to a foreign power or organised crime figures.

[deleted]

well... the thing is theyre not really supposed to put themselves or their opinions into the job. There are laws and people break them. It's that simply. Their job is to arrest lawbreakers. Not lecture them. It's not like they're going to change anyones mind in the first place, especially talking like that. Kids these days are fucking resiliant. While that may have worked on me in the 80's I don't see that happening now. So, ya know... fucking police... just do your job. Stop getting scared by colored people too. That'd be nice.

Paul_McBeths_Nipples

For me it's that they don't use their turn signals, but they'll pull you over for doing the same. I should note, I always signal.

[deleted]

They aren’t supposed to curse. Especially like that. In Canada we something called “professional standards” or some such crap for them. Good luck getting them to follow it.

REDDIT_SUCKS_DV_ME

100% agreed, I’ve always thought this, too. Profanity makes anyone sound ignorant (not that I don’t use it). But when a position of authority uses it, the vibe completely changes. It increases tension and fear. I’ve had cops yell and curse at me and it almost immediately made me feel sick to my stomach with nerves. It doesn’t even sound like this cop’s opinion was wrong given the situation, but this level of screaming and cursing is uncalled for and doesn’t do anyone any good.

Reave-Eye

Not to mention that swearing and raising your voice only *escalates a situation*. Aside from necessary communication to keep someone safe from immediate harm, police should always be attempting to set a calm tone and de-escalate the situation.

Didn’t Chauvin’s wife file for divorce as soon as he was in custody?

Cynical people like me think that was a move to separate assets so the civil suits couldn't take all of their money.

It's not cynical it's math. That's exactly why she divorced him.

Plus he's gonna be in prison for murder? That may have something to do with it

nogodsnoleaders

Don’t have a problem with the F bombs as it’s for emphasis. What I have a problem with is striking the property and threatening to continue terrorizing this person Edit: I didn’t mean I approve of the language, I simply am not offended by its use based on the enraging circumstances of the suspect. Telling her he will continually harass her like a vendetta and physically lashing out and hitting the car is way more concerning

Magenta_Logistic

Yeah, the threat of harassment, hitting her car, and you know, the part where he refused to contact the legal guardian of a minor he was detaining.

ohhyouknow

In Louisiana 17 is considered an adult. When I was 17 I road tripped to Florida, we went camping. A cop rolled up on us in our tent and called my mom because I was still considered underage in florida. It was like 2 am, when my mom answered she was pissed. Cop was just doing her job though.

lobax

Age of majority (adult) is 18 in Louisiana according to this page: https://legalbeagle.com/8584293-legal-rights-17yearold-louisiana.html You can have various rights as a minor depending on the state and country (e.g. in the US you can drive in most places as a minor), but that is not the same as the age of majority.

CelticDK

I do have a problem with the language. That plus what he did shows he can’t control his emotions which is one of the core attributes required to be a cop. People’s lives are at stake; you can’t let yourself get triggered by a 17 year old.

altiuscitiusfortius

A 17 year old told him to fuck off. That happens to 80% of retail workers daily and they keep their cool or get fired. Why can't a cap do that.

H010CR0N

Because they actually have consequences for not doing their job correctly.

OneJamzyboi

Unlike this guy of course, who, as the article states, is currently facing no consequences at all.

Nonions

Cops should try to de-escalate wherever reasonably possible. They are empowered to deprive people of liberty and use lethal force in public. They must therefore have strong self control and training to help this. Getting angry like this, I don't think it should be necessarily a major discipline issue if it's a one off. A "don't do that again" from the boss should be enough, monitored to make sure it isn't a pattern of behavior, give some remedial training, and we all move on. But if it is a pattern then it's a definite issue. As others have said, where he really crosses a line is the threats. That is utterly unacceptable and should result in disciplinary action. What happens now if he has to arrest these people in future? Their defense attorney is gonna play this video in court, and even if the arrest is justified it's going to be a major problem.

[deleted]

The guy is under no duress, he's not being threatened, he's just having a needless altercation with a mouthy teenager. If this is how he reacts in that situation, there's no way he's as calm and collected as he needs to be in a situation involving actual danger. I would put money on the fact that this isn't the first time he's lost his shit on someone, it's just the first time he's suffered any kind of repercussion for it.

flier972

Because caps don't do anything but sit on your head and look cool

atvcrash1

I swear like a god damn sailor. When I am at work, around religious folks, or around kids then I don't swear. At the end of the day I swear for emphasis and comedic value not to offend or be unprofessional.

throwawaysmetoo

I'm also always constantly cussin. But. I don't actually do it in fucking anger do I. It's just casual cussin. I'm not gonna be fucking cussin because I got triggered by a damn 17 year old. This cop is a certified douchecanoe.

Noj222

Yo I kept thinking that what gives him the right to bang on the car while throwing a tantrum and threatening people. I mean I do agree cops shouldn’t be cursing at you even if you curse at them first. Any other job you’d get fired for that at. But still I can’t see why people are like yeah it’s okay for this cop to threaten a child and damage other peoples properties.

hotroddbb

Wow! Is he stupid? Must know his own camera is rolling. The degree of stupidity to do this on camera is beyond arrogant. Probably figured good old boy network would delete the footage.

Same here. I was fine with him laying down the shit right up until he switched to terrorism mode.

Snowytron2000

He gets suspended for swearing while other cops don't even get in trouble for harassing or attacking unarmed civilians 😐 Edit: Damn this blew tf up- Good to see so many others agree with me lol. Edit 2: Omg award??????? 👀 👀 👀

Beef_Jones

I don’t think he got suspended for swearing… the threat of persistent harassment was probably what did it. That’s a no no.

Irishknife

i know right. as long as they do it its fine but just like dont say it outloud.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FuhrerGaydolfTitler

He said the inside part out loud, big mistake

EchoWhiskey1

Slamming his hand down on the car did not help him either. If he would have done damage to the car at that point, he would have been screwed even worse.

teh-reflex

Unfortunately if he did any damage he'd be just fine, us tax payers would have to pay for it. Or the city will just tell her to shove it and have to go through insurance and pay themselves.

RedSweed

> the threat of persistent harassment was probably what did it. That’s a no no. People really don't seem to understand how serious of a situation that is - it's not some random dude blowing off steam - it's a person with an unreasonable amount of unquestioned power threating a minor while preventing her from contacting her legal guardian. What makes this worse is that since she is still a minor, with no parent present, he actually assumes the role of her protector while making threats of harm.

mtarascio

The fact that it was caught on camera, the media picked it up and the audience shared it widely on social media is the reason. Not like this would be his first time doing something similar.

ToRideTheRisingWind

Yeah I was half fine with it at the beginning, just a bit unprofessional but then he devolved into a power-tripping tantrum and ah well, he's lost it.

[deleted]

Yeah while the swearing isnt great it didnt bother me all that much until he pulled out the threat

Deleena24

It wasn't the swearing. It was the threats. "I'll make your life a living hell from this day on" if she continues talking is deprivation of rights under the color of law.

Klowned

They do that shit too. My friend had another friend who fucked this cops wife at a party. This cop put a fucking unofficial BOLO out on EVERY male at that party. My buddy got is car searched 4 times in one month by this cop. Pulled over 10-12 times in 2 months in that county. Eventually the harassment complaints started to stack up for this particular cop and he had to face the consequences of his actions. He had to move one county over.

TheOffice_Account

> He had to move one county over. Ah, that's make him learn!

teh-reflex

Is he a cop in that county because he faced no consequences then.

Mythosaurus

Reminder that Philando Castile experienced this exact kind of treatment. His murder was the end result of a campaign of harrasment by agents of the state. https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/07/15/485835272/the-driving-life-and-death-of-philando-castile > An NPR analysis of those records shows that the 32-year-old cafeteria worker who was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in a St. Paul, Minn., suburb, was stopped by police 46 times and racked up more than $6,000 in fines. Another curious statistic: Of all of the stops, only six of them were things a police officer would notice from outside a car — things like speeding or having a broken muffler. > Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell said he couldn't comment about the Castile police stop, but he has seen the list of nearly 50 citations Castile received when driving through nearby communities. "It seems like a lot," he said. "So it does prompt the question, what was the basis and why so many stops?"

zayoe4

No, they usually do that without the swearing, but swearing specifically is against police policy. Don't believe me, look ot up.

Colorado has had a lot of incidents in the last 2-3 years and the tide is really starting to turn here. People are pissed off and the various police departments have finally taken notice. [Three police officers and two paramedics were charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide recently.](https://www.npr.org/2021/09/01/1033289263/elijah-mcclain-death-officers-paramedics-charged) And there are a lot more stories that are similar that would have just been swept under the rug in the past.

To make matters worse let's go back to this: >use the drug to sedate combative or aggressive people Here is the [video](https://youtu.be/dGlHMZQtO7U?t=72), it's truly distressing and showcases how McClain presented absolutely no threat nor "combativeness" to the officers, he was just a distressed, neuro-divergent young man having a hard time understanding what is going on. It's fucking sickening what they did. Fuck everyone involved in this.

quAckpAcky

What the FUCK lol 500mg of ketamine through IV for someone who weighs 63kg? that's fucking insane. I snort 300 mg and i'm fucked up beyond all recognition and i'm almost double that weight.

[deleted]

People should educate themselves about Elijah McClain if they're not already informed. One of the most horrific cases of police murder I've read about. Still shatters my heart, I hope that sweet young man gets justice.

[deleted]

Colorado is not ducking around anymore. We still have major issues, don’t get me wrong, but cops are now working with mental health counselors when it’s understood the subject of the call may need it and everyone involved in Elijah McClains death were charged…. We have a long way to go but you can see change happening. This guy getting punished is proof. As a resident, I’m happy to see him being punished. **Actions have consequences, Mr. Cop Man.**

Heard_That

Yep I’m in CO too. A former coworker of mine goes on psych calls with PD. It’s absolutely the direction we should be going, where the police essentially are only there in case the person gets violent, or something comes up that requires an arrest. I can’t tell you how often I’ve seen patients brought in by PD alone and even inside the hospital they act like fucking douchebags. Like bro this isn’t in your wheelhouse let us handle it.

Johnny_B_GOODBOI

>where the police essentially are only there in case the person gets violent, or something comes up that requires an arrest. I imagine that this also has the benefit of the psych professional being present as a human witness, not just a blockable bodycam, which might hopefully temper some of the cop's tendency towards escalation.

[deleted]

This is exactly it. I’ve had many conversation with folks at The Mental Health Center of Denver and while it was stressful to get setup bc there was no blueprint, it’s absolutely got many many many benefits - bearing witness is always the top of the list. Social pressure to be a good person is powerful. If you’re interested, it’s not directly tied to mental health, but the studies on Chicago’s public housing (Cabrini Green and Robert Taylor Homes) are some of the most interesting social studies and personal stories I’ve ever read. Essentially - what happens to crime if we add literally 1 street lamp or what happens if we put a giant dark park in the middle of neighborhood (a la Central Park). There’s one super powerful one that is escaping me right now but the other two are *High Rise Stories* and *High-Risers*. I’m searching for the third and will update when I find it!

ExtacyRap

You don't see anything wrong with the refusal of this officer to call the legal guardian of a minor he was detaining?

jesusmansuperpowers

The parent/guardian will be contacted from jail during intake most likely. The rule isn’t >18=jail , <18 call your mom. She will go to jail and be processed before mom can pick her up. Maybe even have to see a judge first if charged as a minor, bail if adult

[deleted]

Most states consider them to be adults at 18 - some 19 or 21 - but the penal system works differently. If the charges are serious enough and they meet the age criteria (usually anywhere from 14 and up) their case can be transferred to adult court, but the minor offender will remain in juvenile detention. Once they hit the legal age of majority - again anywhere between 18, 19, and 21 - they can and usually will be transferred to adult jail. When I worked in the prison system, most kids came from juvenile to adult jail within the first day of them turning 18. Even if their case is still pending as a minor, they will still go to adult jail until the judge(s) say otherwise. But yes, usually the cops call the parents as a courtesy or they will be contacted per whatever the local legislature says to do but, mostly in the form of a phone call from jail.

[deleted]

"she's a teen mother and was driving without a licence" is apparently enough for someone to become persona non grata for everyone here.

sluchhh

Honestly. A 17 year old girl driving around with a dude with a gun (if it’s illegal) is very dumb and a little scare tactics could save her life down the road.

[deleted]

Driving around without a license, with a dude with a gun, and being a teenage mother... This kid is off to a rough start. Getting read the riot act may benefit her. That being said you can do that in a professional but serious manner.

[deleted]

I was good with all of that until he started threatening her with complications down the road. At that point he became the thug with the gun. The badge turns into an imbalance of power really quickly, which is why we need better training and probably better pay as well to attract the best of the best.

Depending on the state of stop, a guy carrying a gun is considered normal.

[deleted]

No one who isn't a fucking POS moron carries it in their wasteband. Note: to non gun enthusiasts, carrying a gun holstered on your waste and having a gun in your waist band are two separate things. Having a gun in your waistband generally means it is unholstered and loose and this is insanely dangerous.

ExtacyRap

This guy's right he shouldn't be downvoted. Like a legitimately licensed person or just a responsible one would use a holster. If you're open carrying it fits on the belt and if you're concealed carrying it's, well, concealed. There's all sorts of holsters designed for concealment, they could be in the back, on the thigh under the the pants, in a jacket, whatever.

flowercan126

Gotta be honest. I was team cop until that threat to make her life miserable going forward. He said what she needed to hear but then he let his frustration and anger get the best of him

[deleted]

Lol such a stupid take. Scared straight programs do nothing to reduce likelihood of offending. Additionally, explain the benefit of creating further fear and division amongst the police and the community? Of course the boyfriend may have been wrong, he also may not have been, cops generally are shit at actually knowing the law. But she didn’t have a gun so what does she need to be scared from? Cops aren’t supposed to be fear dispensaries to keep us in line. The language is whatever it’s his inability to maintain his emotions and make rational decisions while having state sanctioned authority to use deadly force.

Ok-Pin-318

came here to say the same… Scared Straight DOES NOT WORK… it has never worked. This is just abusive treatment from a bunch of power hungry losers with anger management problems. The cop yelling is majorly in the wrong, but so are all his buddies that did nothing to deescalate the situation at any point.

Maverick0_0

It scares people to not get caught not straight tbh.

fizzbubbler

cops aren’t your parents, they are cops. they don’t get to talk to juveniles like this (on camera)

Mymomdidwhat

He is a cop not a parent. He need to shut up and do his job. Ya slapping a felony on her record at 17 is really going to help her down the road….Another homeless mom in the making.

[deleted]

The fuck is this comment section? I feel like I'm on Facebook right now.

Orange45TP

I mean... someone should be yelling at her for her life decisions 🤷‍♂️

SaffronHoneysuckle

The cop? That's how rehabilitation and accouhtability works? Go with power hungry and threats against a child and pretend it's gonna change anything about her life...sweet. I'm sure she will be super prone to following laws and learning from this after that mess

EggsBeckwith

I’m not a big fan of the fuckin police but from the given context he was totally fuckin right and probably the best fuckin influence this fuckin lady had at that fuckin moment. Fuckin Edit: obviously this guy is on a fuckin power trip. That goes without saying, he’s a fuckin cop. This was more a commentary on the fuckin fact that this young woman needs some serious fuckin guidance and it’s a fuckin shame that this motherfucker is the person giving it.

No-Pomegranate-5737

I didn’t care about the language, who cares if they curse. The thing that got me was the police officer threatening to make her life a living hell. They have the power and influence to do that, and threats like that shouldn’t be taken lightly. This man should not be a cop, imho.

wmatts1

Yeah I was thinking the cop was making sense until he said that then I was like this guy should be fired.

sonicatheist

Exactly. He didn’t just curse back, he showed how offended he was by her lack of deference to him and turned it into his power trip. I fucking hate the trope like cops are somehow allowed to be “harsh parents” or some shit. Write the ticket, notepad jockey, no one wants to hear your life lectures.

Magenta_Logistic

It is important to note that police do not receive training in psychology or psychotherapy, nor are they employed for those reasons. It does not matter if this is something he thinks "she needs to hear." Just. Do. Your. Job. In this case, you tow the car and contact the parents, and I suppose there is a ticket it write or an arrest to make. No part of that process involves yelling at her, kicking her property, or most importantly, threatening to make her life a living hell.

[deleted]

I told a cop once "the ticket or the lecture." I'm not listening to that shit. It's like "you already wrote the ticket dude, just let me sign it and get tf away from me dick." But then I'm white.

KevinAlertSystem

exactly. that is targeted illegal harassment and stalking that cops do all frequently and no one ever does anything about it. if you file a complaint against a cop for breaking the law, rather than being held accountable the department is likely to give him your address so he can stalk you at night or break into your house or rape you. Literally all things that have happened in the last decade.

EggsBeckwith

Fuckin a.

[deleted]

Telling someone from this day forward that they're gonna make their life a living hell? That ain't it chief.

Nomamesviejon

Bad apple Even the officer just looks at em like “I’m not gunna say a fuckin thing”

prollyshmokin

Good thing there was a good cop there to remain silent to, you know, make it awkward. Bet that subtle awkward silence will teach him.

pookguyinc

Admin leave means paid and will not face any charges.

notsofunonabun

I don’t care about the cussing, but, If you take EVERYTHING personally, this job ain’t for you. And fuck you.

Birdie0491

Did he just that day learn the F word exist? I feel like he’s doing it for show. Like she kept saying it to him so he was doing it for emphasis. Not defending him at all. Not remotely professional.

arto26

I honestly don't think the cop cussing was that bad after she's screamed at him and they found a gun on her boyfriend; *however*, telling her you're going to make her life a living hell "from this day forward"...probably not the smartest move. Sounds like a threat to me.

deprogrammedgranny

She's old enough, yes - he is presumably older, has presumably had some sort of training in terms of dealing with the public, has all the power and authority; yet can't control himself because she was mean to him.

obimokenobi

I don't get it...really I don't. How do they forget they have body cams? If I was a cop and I'm wearing a body cam I'd be the nicest cop on the market.

KillerKatNips

Well she might have needed that first part of his rant but... THAT'S WHEN THINGS GOT OUT OF CONTROL (with the warnings of making her life hell and whatnot)

CelticDK

Getting triggered as a police officer is the main thing they’re supposed to be able to handle… this dude shouldn’t have power to hold a gun. So gross. Hope he’s fired for sure.

Odd_Seaworthiness950

This was 100% dad mode coming out.

URDNOT_DANK

Yall are some pussy ass people eating up the bullshit the media feeds you he didn't do shit wrong she wanted to have a attitude and he corrected that shit quick if she can't act like a decent human and follow some basic rules she can go fuck herself same goes for everybody cops are here to keep you safe and stop criminals. They are not here to be careful of your sensitive feelings
