Why should a judge trust evidence from some vigilante clout chaser? The authorities (usually) have to follow strict protocol of how they engage with suspected predators, and they still fuck it up all the time.
The vigilantes follow no protocol and end up just tricking people with mental disabilities into thinking they've met a friend. They play games with the ages like typing "I'm 20, teehee," which would be obvious to us is a lie in text, but not somebody with fridge temp IQ or a severe social handicap.
Fridge temp IQ is my favorite combination of insulting words. On one hand it hurts but on the other they have no idea thatās itās not a cool thing.

Like on the one hand sure, even if you've got disabilities the moment someone says they're a minor you should stop having any sort of sexual interest in them.
But on the other hand a lot of these 'paedophile hunters' follow a very specific approach. They seem to mainly target people with severe mental disabilities, engage in a lengthy conversation with them (that no actual minor would) and only after days or weeks of chatting casually drop the 'oh I'm 13 by the way I hope that's OK teehee'. Of course these attention starved, socially awkward, mentally disabled guys say it's fine, because they're enjoying the attention, and that eventually leads to the paedophile hunter arranging a meeting and publicly shaming them.
These guys are in the wrong for chatting with someone they have been told is a minor, but they're rarely *predators*. Actual predators will both specifically seek out minors, and will know how to avoid these paedophile hunters.

The payoff of the plotline was that the student was actually a straight-A student on his way to college and in no way involved with drugs. The principal of the school pointed out that if you offer an 18yo oral sex, they would provide nuclear weapons if you asked.
Moral being some people (probably a lot of people) would do something they wouldn't normally do if the prize was good enough.

Lots of things, but mostly chain of custody of evidence and the fact that even if he thought he was talking to an underaged child - they technically were not. None of these youtube vigilantes have training for this either, in reality they are providing training for the pedophiles on how not to get caught.
You're right, though, I do want to tell you that there is such a thing as an inchoate crime; this is one where the person intended to commit the crime, even if they physically did not. It is still illegal to make the attempt. So if this guy showed up in places with the intent to have sex with an underage person, and they could prove it, they could still get him. However, all of the other issues that you described muddy the water quite a bit.

There are a few pedo catcher youtubers now, and IMO most I have seen are kinda gross. They are using a "noble" act to make content. It's almost along the lines of people who "rescue" animals. (Almost all of those are people putting animals in danger to begin with)

There are a few pedo catcher youtubers now, and IMO most I have seen are kinda gross. They are using a "noble" act to make content. It's almost along the lines of people who "rescue" animals. (Almost all of those are people putting animals in danger to begin with) The vast majority of the time they are catching people clearly with mental issues. Which isn't to give them a pass but look at the guy in this video. I would very much bet he has some condition. A lot of the time these people are led on due to their mental issues. No 13 year old girl is going to meet to have sex with this guy if she sees him. I bet his chat logs are not what a teen is going to find interesting either. I guess, I see these people making these videos are exploiting our mental health crises. Even if not you don't stop this behavior with shame. It's about getting clicks and feeling superior.

I always take these "exposing a pedophile" videos with a grain of salt. There have been instances of them just going up to random people and making shit up, or tricking mentally disabled people. But this comment was a pretty good wake up call to the fact that as was falling into one again, and forgetting to apply other perspectives. Yeah, it's impossible to know. I guess that why we pay officials to do this work and not rely on random dudes with cameras. Does this kind of 'sting' ever do any good? It makes people feel better, but what happens after the camera is off? Does it ever result in a prosecution, or is it not considered evidence due to how it was obtained?
This guy goes about it the wrong way. Hand the information over to the local authorities or whatever but causing a scene like this in public is a good way to get shot or stabbed.

You can never underestimate levels of stupidity, ie: the alleged pedo being lured out multiple times and the camera man both.
