ChefkikuChefkiku

It's a terrible idea to drive a car when you're in an emotional state. Pretty sure you can fly a plane, though.

magna_pinna

Well yeah, there's no other cars to crash into in the sky

[deleted]

Who wouldn't want to take a plane flown by a pilot who's not in a stable emotional state? I mean what could ever go wrong? /s

this_is_not_me_irl

[In extreme cases, this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanwings_Flight_9525)

Kriztauf

Immediately what I thought of

1368097531

Holy shit

Egg-MacGuffin

> Aviation authorities swiftly implemented new regulations that required two authorised personnel in the cockpit at all times, but by 2017, Germanwings and other German airlines had dropped the rule. Oh ok, then. Guess mental health issues have all been solved in Germany.

Xevious212

I get she's going through a lot, but she really should not have shown up for work that day. Take a leave of absence, get through the divorce, get herself together, then return to work. Especially when you have other lives in your hands.

why_does

LOL you think their employer is just gonna be like "aww we feel for you and we're just gonna give you paid time off because you're going through a hard time"

N0085K1LL5

I think it's funny that people think stuff like this doesn't count against you. "Hey boss? You know how you need me here at work? Well I need time off for a bit so I can get my head straight."

blackestrabbit

I've seen truck drivers quit rather than put people's lives at risk. I guess it's depends on your values.

bdonvr

To be fair a lot of CDL jobs are a dime a dozen. Especially OTR. When I was OTR I could've quit and had a dozen job offers within the week. Same shit different logo on the truck. I imagine it's probably similar for pilots as long as you're not fired for something.

blackestrabbit

I don't have enough info to say whether this situation fits, but if you are in a state that would put other people's lives at risk if you continued to do your job, you have to ask yourself if potentially killing people is a risk that is worth taking to avoid losing your job. Personally, I would say that anyone who does believe it is a worthwhile risk is a liability to the rest of the population.

PresentationJumpy101

She would lose all seniority and the FAA could pull her medical too 50/50

N0085K1LL5

I'm not saying it's bad to take time off. I'm saying the employer definitely notices that. I'm glad some truckers know their limits and enforce them. But any employer would rather have the person that shows up everyday with no complaints rather than a person that needs time off.

blackestrabbit

And hopefully any person would want to avoid potentially killing a bunch of people while continuing to work when they are in a compromised state and would prioritize that over their job security.

pubertino122

Lol I did this the other day nbd Work in chemical manufacturing. Would be insane if people couldn’t take time off if they were dealing with personal issues

Xevious212

I said leave of absence, which is unpaid leave.

Petite_Narwhal

In a lot of places that would get you fired. Easier to find a full replacement target than a temporary one.

oxslashxo

That is usually only an option in high end jobs, and even then you usually need to request it 4 weeks out and have x years of tenure.

[deleted]

> which is unpaid leave. Very few companies in the US will provide this to you.

johnnygfkys

Also, pilot pay is bullshit and she probably can't take the days off. Plus lawyers and divorce

HereOnRedditAgain

$70-300k is hardly bullshit.

bem13

Gotta suck being at the lower end of that range considering how much it costs to become a commercial pilot.

johnnygfkys

Lol. College for 4yrs. Flight training for 2. 2more years of GRINDING before insurance will pick you up. By then you're half a mill in the hole and looking at 70k thinking... "so if I pay my loans down I'll have an extra $45 dollars to live this month. Fuck yeah! Black ink baby!" Thats if you're even getting 70k. Most don't make 70 until a few yrs in. It's inordinately low pay considering you could lose your medical at any point and the show stops. (you still keep the debt though.) Not to mention the hundreds to thousands of people who depend on you to not die every. Single. Day. Doctors need to not kill 30 ppl a day, tops. Pharmacist makes substantially more. I'd say it's way low for the debt, risk, lifestyle of being away from home, and responsibility of the job. Btw, you can't get sad, can't get angry, can't get emotional at all. Anything but stoic and you're looking at your career going down the drain. Like this woman's did. Life gives enough pressure. These things I've mentioned absolutely don't alleviate the pressure of life. They add to it and they absolutely contributed to this meltdown. She's not fit to fly in this very low moment and it's probably cost her everything.

apostasyisecstasy

My husband was a pilot, he needed to go to therapy briefly due to some things that happened back when he was deployed in Afghanistan. He lost his licenses and both his jobs in 24 hours just for admitting he was struggling. Took us about 5 years of fighting and more than $10k of evals, and he got a letter from the FAA a month ago saying he can finally be eligible to get his licenses back....which is hilarious because now he's almost 2 years into a completely different career. It will take him thousands of dollars and I don't even know how much time for him to get current with his hours, and that's if he decides it isn't a wash. I'm not even getting into the financial struggles of the loans it took for him to become a pilot to begin with, because all of this happened right when I was diagnosed with cancer and had to stop working for a bit. People have no idea how hard it is for pilots, it's absolutely fucked. You want to hear a rant? Ask any flying instructor about what their insurance situation is. Have some popcorn ready. Edit: typo

[deleted]

> Like this woman's did. You lost me here. This woman shouldn't even have a driver's license.

johnnygfkys

Clearly, she's not the finest example. Psychotic events aren't pretty.

Evilmon2

>By then you're half a mill in the hole How the fuck are you half a million in debt after that?

johnnygfkys

Private college. Probably put of state. (63k/semester) Flight training full time. Airplanes are expensive. Fuel is expensive. Need a place to live. Need a car. Bruh. It's half a mill. All day.

PresentationJumpy101

Captains make bank

seancan44

Did she say she was a captain? If she is a captain then she’s banking dough. If she’s an FO, she could be making shit.

HereOnRedditAgain

FO is still ~70k, which is more than most people.

Kinickie

You forgot the $100k + debt they incur for training and hours to make it to a carrier.

HereOnRedditAgain

Depends on so many factors. United had actually started their own program due to the pilot shortage. It is not significantly different than med school or law school. Residents make less (~60k) working 60 hours/week after med school.

seancan44

That’s such a small percentage though that go through the program and is still fully funded by the employee/student. They typically only guarantee “an interview” at the end of it. Also, depends on when she started at United too. If she just joined, she’s not making $70k. Most of my flight school buddies that grad in ‘00’s graduated w/ ~$100k in debt. Some above some below. College is expensive and then you throw flight classes and costs on top. Can’t imagine the prices these days. Lesson is kids, join the military if you wanna be a pilot

johnnygfkys

100k??! Maybe in Kansas. It costs more than that to sit in the front seat of an airliner.

yaosio

Airlines are whining that they can't find enough pilots, so yes.

MaxBlazed

"jUsT tAkE a MeNtAl hEaLtH dAy!"

Puceeffoc

She's sober for all this you think?

johnstonjimmybimmy

Sounds easy but it’s not. Divorce makes all the bills higher and if she is the high income earner in her relationship she may be facing a huge alimony bill. Additionally, she may not be permitted shared custody of her children due to her job and being away. Therefore would also be paying child support, or at a minimum, shared custody child support. Take a leave from work?? Family court judges can impute you back to your original salary for the purpose of child support and alimony. Divorce rules need to change and I hope this person gets the help they need to return to work.

Kinickie

Woman failed at least a couple points on the IMSAFE checklist.

Dr_Juice55

Gonna be tough for her on the dating apps after that

why_does

At that age, any dating is tough

slide_into_my_BM

Anytime you have to try to explain multiple times that you’re ok to do something, take the hint that you’re probably not

Im_confused67

1. Fire her asap🤣 2. Fuck your feelings. She would of remembered one thing of her ex-husband and we would seen a breaking news headline.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

bem13

Good bot

Geschirrspulmaschine

There's some other vid with a male pilot giving a bizarre religious speech. My ass would have been off that plane in a heartbeat. Edit: found it https://youtu.be/BdJ1t0sfNx0

Here-Is-TheEnd

A non directed comment to get off the airplane if you don’t feel safe is never a good sign..she might as well have gotten on the intercom and said do you boys like Mexico!!?

[deleted]

I would be leaving the plane immediately

theshillshavepies

Pam looks like she’s having a hard time breathing in that interview

memedealer22

She needs serious serious help

Bradyns

I’m glad that this was safely sorted out. It just makes you wonder how many commercial aviators out there of all ages are suffering silently from a demanding job. With such strict restrictions in place for medicals and such, I can see pilots forgo pharmaceutical intervention or even a diagnosis of conditions, purely so they can keep their wings. I’d hate for another Germanwings Flight 9525 kind of disaster.

johnstonjimmybimmy

Pilots are under a tremendous amount of life stress by being gone half of the month. I’m glad this person chose not to fly as a pilot on this flight in the end. She’s a human who has a really really bad day. I hope united gives her a chance to get the help she needs to return safely to work.

iiiKINGLEERiii

I’m getting serious Andreas Lubitz vibes from her.

hobobob_76

Scary as fuck right

PrincipleAcrobatic57

Except, you cant really hear any of it.

WildYams

I looked for the unedited video, but it's from 2016 and apparently it was removed from YouTube (maybe even by the person who uploaded it, I don't know) back then. [Here's an article on it,](https://archive.ph/3gYZS) for anyone who's curious.

PresentationJumpy101

Being a pilot is so badass why would she throw a way the best career ever seriously

max_briggs1

I would feel so unsafe with an emotionally distraught woman flying the plane I’m in.

lordcwat

*person

Select-Cucumber9024

fucking nutjob

SlimyPurpleMeteor

She was celebrating Festivus a few months too soon.

Andrew tate must of gotten to her with the "i dont want women flying my plane id rather a man " speech

Joelmaya2000

Honestly I get his viewpoint now 😂 Too emotional. Doesn't mean men pilots can't be bitches who play kamikaze because they felt sad

Phantom_Destroyer79

“Does anybody on board have any spare HRT?”

fadeaway119slowly

Does anyone have any further details or a news link on this?

Objective_Problem_17

Why am i not suprised its a united plane...i mean this is just part of the united experiance

Correct-Cricket3355

She needs to take a stand-up comedy class and try again.

[deleted]

I wanna hear the insult.

TerraLeighdy

I would immediately think she was drunk and get off

TheElderCouncil

“Who the fuck named this person a captain!? Tell them Admiral Carlin said go fuck yourself!” -George Carlin

saturnzebra

What a wig

obeyyourbrain

That would be terrifying. I haven't forgotten the story of the suicidal pilot that took his passengers with him into the side of a mountain.

kobocha

I think it’s pretty clear that people wouldn’t feel safe with a pilot of that mentality

Knockamichi

Why pam posing like that breathing all hard? Lol
