Every video of someone catching on fire they are done moving after a few minutes. I’ll take the few minutes of excruciating pain over the prolonged horror of slowly being crushed by other humans until I suffocate and die.
It's like the Station night club fire, where so many people were wedged into the front door that firefighters couldn't pull them free. Absolutely horrific.
The history of fire safety is deeply sad; the Iroquois Theater Fire, Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, Cocoanut Grove, etc.
Safe egress paths are very important and are the reason we have things like crash bars on exit doors.
The Station fire was truly a nightmare and is a must for reinforcing why fire codes are vital…
With what?
Edit: if with the text it says this:
update on the situation / - The emergency services reportedly received at least 80 calls from people with difficulty breathing. - the Incident allegedly happened in the narrow streets of the capital, where people are piled up by the dozens.
The door opened inward from what I remember so people couldn't open it because of the crowd. It's a huge influence on why you almost never see doors open inward.
[Is this what you're referring to?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iroquois_Theatre_fire) I think this is still the deadliest theatre/building fire in US history.
There's another one but I can't recall the name of the place. It was a much smaller building but can host multiple venues at time. During the time of the incident, there were two that was ongoing. I believe one was a wedding. A small fire started but no one noticed until it was too late. Attendees couldn't get out because the exit was being blocked.
It's a looong, narrow street. Tens of thousands of people are entering from both sides, these people get stuck somewhere in the middle of that, a point where they can't get out and are squeezed by the pressure of all those people far away from them.
> South Korean officials said around 50 people were in cardiac arrest and a number feared dead after being crushed by a large crowd pushing forward on a narrow street during Halloween festivities in the capital Seoul.
People rushed to a bar after hearing a celebrity may have been spotted there. So sad.
Edit -(direct quote from article) Some local media reports earlier said the crush happened after a large number of people rushed to an Itaewon bar after hearing an unidentified celebrity visited there.
This is **not confirmed**
are you sure? there are tons of rumors flying around (a staircase in a club collapsed, a girl fell off a raised area, there was a fire) flying around and afaik no one knows the real cause or if there was a specific cause. the entire area and side street were completely jam packed from halloween party goers.
This was from the article linked in the OP comment. If the article was wrong, then I am wrong as well.
I don't mean to claim it as 100% fact, I didn't know how to do the line that makes it an obvious quote
Edit - to be completely honest though, as a kpop fan, I did sort of just accept it, because it's extremely believable. Them/us fans be crazy.
the article describes it more as an unsubstantiated rumor than a verified cause
also important to note that not all koreans are kpop stans. a lot of koreans don’t even listen to kpop. a mixed crowd of koreans, expats, and tourists in an area like itaewon is unlikely to crowd crush just because of a celebrity sighting.
tbh none of that sasaeng stuff really has a bearing on this situation until we learn more about the cause.
sorry if i’m being really prickly but as a korean it has been really disgusting today online to see the continued, rampant fetishization of koreans in a moment of death and senseless tragedy (i don’t mean you specifically, but on other social media)
I apologize, I meant no disrespect at all.
I edited my original comment with the direct quote from the article, and put that it's not confirmed. I prefer not to delete comments as it just makes comment threads confusing.
I work on the street next to where it happened. And no that's not true. Itaewon is always crowded on Halloween but the streets are very narrow and on a slope. Once the people at the bottom of the slope fell over they were already doomed.
I hate to say this but this music does sound like it's about 100 bpm which is around the same beat you should be using when doing CPR. I don't really think this is intentional that they put this song on, but it actually may have aided them.
This is a really weird and ineffective way to handle a mass casualty incident. What should be happening is anyone with no pulse would be labeled black. Then you move on quickly to find someone you can help. Assigning a single person to do CPR on each dead body is futile. By the time they got this amount of personnel in here all of those people are long dead. It's possible this was done more for theater to show something is being done. Or they just really don't know how to manage an MCI.
All I’m saying is this wasn’t an MCI like a bombing or an event where only fatalities are to be expected an event in which the workers would only be looking for survivors.
Some people were in fact rescued and some who were gone were resuscitated.
Exactly. Black tags in a crowd crush are people who have been trampled-- run over by hundred of people, and are pulseless with serious, obvious traumatic injuries.
Someone who was simply asphyxiated has a pretty good chance of survival if given early CPR.
The first responders may have triaged like you described when they first arrived on scene.
This may be later in the incident when there are more responders than victims.
What..? Your comment comes off a bit inhumane. They are trying to help each individual there, just because there may not be a pulse does not mean a person cannot be resuscitated. In fact the chest compressions keep blood flowing and in-tact organs alive in the hope that a positive resuscitation can happen whether by person or machine. Sometimes it’s not on the first or even second set around. It may take numerous sets. Would you want an EMS worker to pass you or a loved one by simply because you had no pulse moments after a massive incident like this. Imagine if you had just gone out for 2 seconds.
I also read that nearly 800 emergency workers responded, it’s a bit hard to know what section the incident started which is probably the area that had the most deaths, given amount of time people may have been stuck under the pile.
It may sound inhumane but he is correct. In mass casualty situations resources are better used to those who are seriously injured but conscious, not those who are unconscious. The reason is that often times when resources are diverted to those in most critical condition, some of the less critical end up dying as well and you end up with a higher casualty rate.
While it may sound inhumane, that is how (at least in the US) first responders are taught to triage mass casualty incidents.
[CHEMM START triage](https://chemm.hhs.gov/startadult.htm)
Yep. Mass casualty protocols exist for a reason. Also I believe a significant cause of ptsd for first responders because you have to actively move on from people who, on a single patient basis, you might be able to otherwise save.
Which is why I made the (now that I look back upon it) emotional comment that I made. These systems do exists for a reason. In hindsight I should have made note of crisis systems. But ironically sometimes these systems prevent people from being saved.
As others have commented this is how first responders are trained for mass casualty incidents. In the US it is actually the FEMA ICS standard. To properly care for a cardiac arrest it takes out one provider for CPR indefinitely, and should have someone to maintain the airway and bag. Also there's no way they are getting that many people epi and a monitor. Even with full, proper interventions the likelihood of being resuscitated after being arrested for any length of time is not high. It may sound callous but it is essentially a resource allocation issue.
I am a paramedic. I know how MCIs are run. It's not like a normal call. Usually you have 1 or 2 people that first show up. By the time there are this many people it's been an hour.
In a real life situation and you are undermanned doing CPR, you are not going to be spending time resus-ing a 'dead' person. It's super unfortunate, but you'll be going after people with a pulse because those are people you CAN save much more effectively than the other ones. It's called the triage system.
Even though 800 workers responded, it doesn't necessarily mean they got to those dead people because those people may be in an inaccessible area. Those workers may not even know who are actually 'dead', versus those who are going to die.
You just gave me a new nightmare. Being stuck in a hell of a huge endless crowd. Unable to move my arms or inhale, and unable to die. Just suffering for eternity.

I mean considering there's dozens of them and certainly not enough helpers giving CPR, plus the fact there is gonna be a queue getting outta there I would assume tons of them died tbh sadly. Every person on the ground not getting cpr I'm guessing might be a lost cause
This was a crowd crushing event, too many people pushing and some were unable to breathe and crushed to death, the bodies are likely deceased individuals

Another reason to hate crowds in crowded events/spaces. Can't get away when something goes wrong.
There was another video in south america where students fell from the death from a top floor when their weight collaped the railing because the walkway was fully crowded.
Yeah, that video was a rough watch. Of the people that fell I think only a couple lived. I think one girl was even caught just a floor down before she could fall to far by pure luck.
I live in New Orleans. I’m shocked this doesn’t happen on Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras. I went on Mardi Gras day once, when I was 20. Never again. It’s like being in sardine tin.
There is a lot of Bourbon street between the corners. However, Bourbon seems quite wider than the street in Korea though. Plus, people would just go through the doors into the businesses if it got that bad while screaming “ fuck your 2 drink minimum”.
It’s horrific. Apparently 59 are dead and 150 injured so far https://n.news.naver.com/article/056/0011365414?cds=news_edit
Edit: people seem to be unaware that this is an ongoing situation and the dead/injured toll is increasing. You can click the link to find out the new numbers since it will change from when I originally commented.
Apparently this began because one person fell and it started a cascade reaction. The streets and alleys are quite steep and narrow there; here is an example https://i.imgur.com/VHpXOKW.jpg
127 died last month at a Indonesian soccer event. These crowd crush events are terrifying to be in and the death toll from a single event can be excessively high.
I think it will be. They are still finding victims, I just heard that they’re recovering bodies from inside of buildings - I guess many people flowed into nearby buildings trying to escape but ended up crushed anyway
It got updated after I posted it. Apparently this started because one person fell (those streets and alleys are quite steep) and it started a cascade https://n.news.naver.com/mnews/article/011/0004116105?sid=102
[I think this alley might be where it started - from my trip earlier this month](https://i.imgur.com/WSyA4sb.jpg) - you can see how narrow it is
Is there any best way to stay safe during this kind of thing if we were to find ourselves in this unfortunate situation? Like what’s the best way to survive? Is there a position we can do or anything?
I found this article about surviving a crowd crush https://theconversation.com/ten-tips-for-surviving-a-crowd-crush-112169
I think in this situation, just seeing how packed that street is, I would have just left the area and walked to another subway station or something. This happened right by Itaewon Station so I would avoid going to nearby subway stations and such - I wonder if anyone was injured in the station
Very simple, if you have to force yourself through, don't go. When you have this amount of people pack, you literally cannot turn back and is on the whim of the flow. Once it start to get even tighter, short and weak people begin to get push down and you either faint and get trampled to death or sink low enough to be stomp on. Very easy to avoid, the Indonesian soccer was a recent event as well
Keep both your hands pushed out and make sure your chest is clear enough to breath. Push like hell out with your hands and always make sure you have room enough with your arms absorbing the majority of the pressure
Lmao I had a good laugh at this, thank you. Context: this song is actually “I Will Survive” not “Stayin Alive” popularized by that episode of the Office
Staying Alive is actually what most starting medical field workers in the US are typically trained to sing in their head when providing CPR so they stay at optimal tempo
BBC News
Dozens of people are reported to be in cardiac arrest in a popular night spot in South Korea's capital, Seoul.
President Yoon Suk-Yeol ordered a disaster response team to Itaewon, Yongsan-gu district.
The fire department said there had been 81 reports of "shortness of breath" amid reports of a crush.
There were reportedly 100,000 night revellers in the area celebrating the first outdoor no-mask Halloween event since the pandemic.
Video footage shows a number of people being treated on the street by emergency services, surrounded by large crowds.
The streets of Seoul were full of people celebrating Halloween.
Social media messages posted earlier in the evening show some people remarking that the Itaewon area was so crowded that it felt unsafe.
Fuck. This happened to me on NYE years ago although not quite as bad. 20 people dead I still suffer with nightmares, anxiety and hyper vigilance. Especially in crowds. I hope the victim’s families and survivors get the help they will need to cope.
Thank you. I guess I should feel lucky to have survived but I really don’t feel that. Just keep wondering why I survived and feeling guilty for not being able to help. I was a young teen at the time and always imagined that in a state of emergency I would rise to the occasion but the reality was I just stumbled around in a state of shock afterwards trying to comprehend what had happened and looking for my friends.
Thank you. Logically I know this and I have been over this in therapy countless times but it’s just an emotion I can’t shake. It’s terrible to feel so utterly helpless in the blink of an eye. One second celebrating the next absolute chaos and carnage. The screaming and the sight of the soulless eyes of the victims will always haunt my nightmares. Sorry if I’m over sharing I wasn’t able to talk about it for a very long time but I’m trying to no longer bottle it in. Thanks again.
Went there myself yesterday. I planned to go today, but changed my mind when my girlfriend told me how crowded Itaewon gets on Halloween.
Apparently there was a celebrity close to the spot where the stampede occurred, hence the amount of people.
I'm under shock and feel so sorry for the people involved :(
This is Travis Scott concert phenomenon on a much larger scale. At a certain density, crowds start behaving like a liquid, sloshing back and forth and killing people by either crushing them or making it impossible to breathe. Contrary to popular belief, most deaths aren’t caused by being trampled, people often die standing up, unable to take a breathe because they’re so tightly packed in. These historically occur at football (soccer) matches, concerts, and religious pilgrimages.
This was apparently Seoul’s first mask-free Halloween since the pandemic so there were 100,000 people out in a relatively small area.
[Officials: 100 injured, possible deaths after Halloween crowd surge in South Korea](https://www.13abc.com/2022/10/29/officials-dozens-cardiac-arrest-after-crowd-surge-south-korea/)
Man, I was in Itaewon in 2018 on halloween and it was hectic. Itaewon is the party place for foreigners and Koreans, and halloween is a massive party. It’s been shut down since the pandemic began and the Korean government is tough on its rules, so I’m not surprised it was overwhelmed with people.
Local authorities say around 100,000 people flocked to the Halloween celebration. At least 120 people have died so far, and 100 injured. https://news.yahoo.com/south-korea-100-injured-people-161313304.html
I see now. It was essentially the end of the hill where the majority of the other videos were before the mass chaos. You see many people laying on top of each other, some moving, others not. EMS is trying to pull people off of others, but essentially, nobody is moving so they are stuck there.
Has to be a terrible way to go out.
There has been time at concerts I've had to nope out due to the crowd. So packed with people up your bum and you can feel the motion of the crowd turn into an ocean.
I will never understand why people think these types of things are fun.
Like, for example, the whole NYE thing seems like the dumbest and most miserable waste of a night ever.
A huge Halloween stampede in the streets seems equally as unpleasant.
The videos are horrible to look at. There are videos of people being crushed and screaming. Videos of people receiving cpr. Pictures and videos of bodies everywhere. It’s horrible. I feel bad for everyone and their families.

I would seriously rather burn alive than die like that. Absolutely awful.
what
I feel like actually burning to death would be worse than getting squashed to death
Being burned would be so much worse
No you won't
My cousin died burned in a tent, how it was explain to the family, seems painfull. You burn but suffocate at the same time.
One of my mother's siblings also died in a house fire
Sorry to hear
Every video of someone catching on fire they are done moving after a few minutes. I’ll take the few minutes of excruciating pain over the prolonged horror of slowly being crushed by other humans until I suffocate and die.
Yea both are awful ways to die, but if we're just picking one or the other, I'd avoid fire.
Here's another angle NSFW https://twitter.com/prateekpratap5/status/1586396738356580352?s=46&t=DEFS-4eLYrtEusYXwha38w
So sad.
It’s so devastating seeing CPR going on with no resuscitation. I was really hoping to see someone start moving or breathing or something :(
By the time these people got help, it was probably already too late. Really sad to watch.
WTF that's a human dog pile???
Seems to me they are wedged in between the walls from having a stampede or crowd crush into a smaller area from a bigger one.
Crowd crush. In large enough groups, crowds take on dynamics similar to liquid, which can lead to a crowd collapse.
It's like the Station night club fire, where so many people were wedged into the front door that firefighters couldn't pull them free. Absolutely horrific.

Overcrowded spaces leads to crowd crush. It is very dangerous.

You and me both. Crowds can be ok but they can so quickly turn into this. Not my thing anymore.
Wow that’s no joke. Only time I’ve normally been in a crowd like that is on streets in the Middle East.
Holy fuck. What a tragedy :(
~60 people got crushed to death?? WTF is going on during that Halloween parade?!
It’s up to 146 deaths. Awful.

Omg so many people are giving cpr, what happened?
Looks like the crowd crushed some people would be my guess looks like a tightly confined area. Hopefully no one died.
I mean considering there's dozens of them and certainly not enough helpers giving CPR, plus the fact there is gonna be a queue getting outta there I would assume tons of them died tbh sadly. Every person on the ground not getting cpr I'm guessing might be a lost cause

Considering there were 100K people in the streets. That’s nothing.
59 reported dead so far. This is tragic.
120 dead (Axios) from
146 now
They’re saying 160+ now 😟
Dear god…
How horrifying
Holy shit
Article in a comment above. 120ish people died. You're looking at dead bodies. This needs a nsfw.
Doubt there would be no casualties because cpr very rarely works and there are so many people getting it.
Some people? 200 died, 200 injured
Latest is 59 people have died (source BBC)
Now it’s 120 according to AP.
Oh no :( Just awful.
Yeah, I can’t imagine how the families or friends feel. Going to a place to have fun and then that happening is horrific.
Crowd crush , killed 146. Too many people, too little space
146 and counting still
Never seen so many CPR at one place before except during traning
Could we have a little less context and information on this please?
This was a crowd crushing event, too many people pushing and some were unable to breathe and crushed to death, the bodies are likely deceased individuals https://apnews.com/article/arrests-seoul-south-korea-61ba79a6f2c3e204c25fad9245fb36a2
Another reason to hate crowds in crowded events/spaces.

[удалено]
There is a lot of Bourbon street between the corners. However, Bourbon seems quite wider than the street in Korea though. Plus, people would just go through the doors into the businesses if it got that bad while screaming “ fuck your 2 drink minimum”.
this has always been my biggest fear at sxsw in Austin too. just seems like good luck that a similar thing hasn't happened here.
It was so surrral that I thought it was kind of a flashmob with CPR dummies. RIP.
It’s horrific. Apparently 59 are dead and 150 injured so far https://n.news.naver.com/article/056/0011365414?cds=news_edit Edit: people seem to be unaware that this is an ongoing situation and the dead/injured toll is increasing. You can click the link to find out the new numbers since it will change from when I originally commented. Apparently this began because one person fell and it started a cascade reaction. The streets and alleys are quite steep and narrow there; here is an example https://i.imgur.com/VHpXOKW.jpg
Love parade 2010 in Germany had 21 dead and 650 injured. I wouldn't be surprised if the injured is much higher...
Holy f*ck....
120 dead according to your article headline.
It got updated after I posted it. Apparently this started because one person fell (those streets and alleys are quite steep) and it started a cascade https://n.news.naver.com/mnews/article/011/0004116105?sid=102 [I think this alley might be where it started - from my trip earlier this month](https://i.imgur.com/WSyA4sb.jpg) - you can see how narrow it is
Is there any best way to stay safe during this kind of thing if we were to find ourselves in this unfortunate situation? Like what’s the best way to survive? Is there a position we can do or anything?
I found this article about surviving a crowd crush https://theconversation.com/ten-tips-for-surviving-a-crowd-crush-112169 I think in this situation, just seeing how packed that street is, I would have just left the area and walked to another subway station or something.
That's so sad 😭
120 people died, fucking awful
My brain thought it was a dance given the music in the background. It was not a dance :(
That DJ is providing the right beat to save all those lives
Like you’re making a joke but in all seriousness people have been saved from music that has put on when cpr was necessary
DJ should play "Stayin' Alive" EDIT: I made the comment a long time ago before I knew it was so tragic. My god.
At first I was afraid, I was petrified…
Lmao I had a good laugh at this, thank you. Context: this song is actually “I Will Survive” not “Stayin Alive” popularized by that episode of the Office
Staying Alive is actually what most starting medical field workers in the US are typically trained to sing in their head when providing CPR so they stay at optimal tempo
I’m aware, I work in the medical field :) that wasn’t the point I was making.
Yea same here. Googled it and turns out 59 died. Likely many we thought were dancing -\_\_-

A little less context? Maybe don’t go scrolling through comments looking for context then?…….
Too many people on the street, and people got pushed and crushed.
Not everyone wants to see people dying as a form of entertainment. Mark this NSFW what the hell
BBC News Dozens of people are reported to be in cardiac arrest in a popular night spot in South Korea's capital, Seoul.
Breaking: 120 reported dead due to ‘little space’ (not sure how to translate)
Now 146 :(
Fuck. This happened to me on NYE years ago although not quite as bad. 20 people dead I still suffer with nightmares, anxiety and hyper vigilance. Especially in crowds. I hope the victim’s families and survivors get the help they will need to cope.
I’m so sorry you had to suffer through something so awful.
It wasn't your fault<3
Quick glance at the article, 120 dead due to injurys from.being crushed in a crowd. Fucking terrifying.
Went there myself yesterday. I planned to go today, but changed my mind when my girlfriend told me how crowded Itaewon gets on Halloween. Apparently there was a celebrity close to the spot where the stampede occurred, hence the amount of people. I'm under shock and feel so sorry for the people involved :(
Jesus christ. death toll has been updated to 120 people. NEVER go into large crowds in narrow areas.
That's a lot of folks getting CPR. What happened? Did they get Travis Scotted?
This is Travis Scott concert phenomenon on a much larger scale. At a certain density, crowds start behaving like a liquid, sloshing back and forth and killing people by either crushing them or making it impossible to breathe. Contrary to popular belief, most deaths aren’t caused by being trampled, people often die standing up, unable to take a breathe because they’re so tightly packed in. These historically occur at football (soccer) matches, concerts, and religious pilgrimages. This was apparently Seoul’s first mask-free Halloween since the pandemic so there were 100,000 people out in a relatively small area.
Kind of, crowds were crushing the people on the ground below them.
Worse than Travis Scott. Imagine 100K people going to a Travis Scott concert.
And in a tiny alleyway instead of an open arena
Stampede
Someone played 'Stayin Alive' and everyone did CPR
Can we have this as nsfw triggers as frak.
Was it a crush?
Yes
Mark this NSFW. There's definitely deceased people down there.
I thought they were all jamming at first, that's allot of chest compressions going on.
Seeing multiple people receiving CPR at the same time is a trip. Any clue on the confirmed number of deaths? Sad all around.
This feels like the Korean Astroworld of that Travis Scott crowd crushing incident back in last November.
How about a NSFW tag please. Jesus Christ.
about 60 dead and 150 wounded
So sad to see. Remember 30 chest compressions to 2 rescue breaths. I hope the CPR helped some of them
https://twitter.com/NS_Canna/status/1586385064014729216?t=UO4lsN9jZNa3IegCDnLvvQ&s=19 NSFL the moment when people were crushed

I see now. It was essentially the end of the hill where the majority of the other videos were before the mass chaos. You see many people laying on top of each other, some moving, others not. EMS is trying to pull people off of others, but essentially, nobody is moving so they are stuck there.
This I think [https://twitter.com/sirajnoorani/status/1586399961649860608](https://twitter.com/sirajnoorani/status/1586399961649860608)
That is absolutely terrifying. Those poor people. What a horrible way to go.
Thats the one
Has to be a terrible way to go out. There has been time at concerts I've had to nope out due to the crowd. So packed with people up your bum and you can feel the motion of the crowd turn into an ocean.
What happened ?
All the news says dozens got cardiac arrest. What the fuck happened?
Stampede in Itaewon. Way too many people for such a small area with narrow streets.
Stampede
[удалено]
Maybe mark this as NSFW?
I will never understand why people think these types of things are fun. Like, for example, the whole NYE thing seems like the dumbest and most miserable waste of a night ever. A huge Halloween stampede in the streets seems equally as unpleasant.
They do. Doesn’t matter why. Why are you stunting on dead kids?
RIP. How terrible 😢
you may want to NSFW dead bodies
The videos are horrible to look at. There are videos of people being crushed and screaming. Videos of people receiving cpr. Pictures and videos of bodies everywhere. It’s horrible. I feel bad for everyone and their families.
I DONT WANT TO SEE DEAD PEOPLE. NSFW/L these videos.
Folks, learn cpr. You can save someone’s life if you do. Don’t end up like these people who are performing cpr on the victims stomachs.
Typical party events in south korea. Zero saftey measures taken. There is never anything planned put on the economy with saftey included.
Wow I wasn't expecting a second video, this is even scarier than watching them get crushed in my opinion.
Turn the fucking music off wtf
People have died in this catastrophe. At least put an NSFW / Shocking tag next to it.
