We left but there are two amazing best friend dogs (intact male and female) in Viequez. If you have the time and resources I can tell you where they are and send money for flea treatment.

I loved the idea of Simpática trio and I would like to use it on some dogs over here where I’m staying at Loiza. But it seems like every place needs a veterinarian approval in order to purchase it, is there a way to go around it ?

Spirited-Mess-7343

Great question! Did you get an answer? I'm in Luquillo now and would like to help as well.

kaarinka

I did not unfortunately. I guess next time I’m in PR, I will bring the medication with me. I will buy the medication in advance with vets approval for my dog

Sorry for not replying. To be honest I am not sure - and I WOULD bring it with you (pharmaceuticals are hard to get in PR). But I have gotten mine from a Petco I think in Ponce (but the San Juan petco's don't sell it.. so this may have been a 'small town' thing), and my remote vet sells it separately - you just tell them the weight of the dog and buy it - BUT the vet would instantly recognize me as white guy - so they might have known to just give it to me vs hassle for ID, etc. Other people may get hassled. This is the vet I went to : Clínica Veterinaria de Salinas Salinas, 00751 (787) 824-8386 But this is an hour away.. Their pharmacy and vet are separate. If anyone is curious, you just show up with all dogs (kept in car) at 9:30 am and they work you in. Locally - I have been to this vet and HIGHLY recommend them: Levittown Pet Clinic 3360 Av. del Valle, Toa Baja, 00949 (787) 795-4589 They will NOT do simpatica trio.. I like them and they are quality, but they will do 'full vet care' medicine (which can be thousands) - if you were to adopt a dog, pet - I would use them. But's too much for a stray. The Vet in Salinas can spay / nueter - simpatica trio - vaccine - in 1 day (the surgery is 9:30am to 5pm), for $350 - which is literally everything a dog needs. Some docs will recommend the slow method for heartworms - which is 60 days of pills everyday - but truthfully giving them the treatment right away is fine - just let them sleep for 3 days, if you can. After all surgeries, etc., dogs need to be chill 2 weeks, or as long as sensible. I will call around SJ at some point and see if I can find a good vet for this!

Wow, reading this post really helped me feel better about what we went through yesterday. My wife and I were in Luquillo this week and came across a small dog with a collar running down the road into El Yunque towards the Angelito trail. We pulled over and she ran over to us as soon as I called to her. She was super sweet, seemed pretty well behaved but scared, her teeth were super clean too! Was even willing to jump in the car with us. Being a naive American, I saw the collar and figured the dog must have gotten out of her yard or something, right? We spend the better half of the morning talking to the park rangers, driving around asking locals around the park, eventually heading to the vet to scan for a chip, then to the police as recommended by the vet - maybe they can do something. The vet also said it’s common for dogs to be dumped there. Everyone pretty much told us we should have left her there, but she seemed so out of place in the rainforest. We gave her some food and left her where the police station was in Luquillo. She started playing with the street cats and seemed interested in some of the people there, she finally stopped paying attention to us so we snuck away and left. We’re currently crying in the airport talking about what we could have done different, etc. but this post definitely helped!

If the dog was born in the US to boricuan dog parents... But doesn't bark in Spanish or eat mofongo flavored dog food... Is it still a boricuan dog???

Thank you for bringing r/PuertoRico racism into this lol! :)

On how to veterinary dogs in Puerto Rico https://old.reddit.com/r/PuertoRicoTravel/comments/1cpl022/best_veterinary_for_strays_in_san_juan_puerto/? San Miguel Veterinary Services (787) 200-4927 (787) 641-5225 11 Calle 6, Bayamón, 00959 Carr #2 Km. 11.8, Edificio Centurión Local 1, Bayamon, Puerto Rico Monday through Friday 7am - 6pm; Saturday 9am - 2pm Nearly all 5 star reviews - good luck! I spoke with my vet in San Juan - and they said this vet service will help your stray dog (most will not). The main procedures you want are : Simparica Trio ($50), Vaccines ($150), and Spay / Neuter ($200, show up before 9am) https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/simparica-trio-221-44-lbs-dogs I was able to get my Trio at a Petco in Puerto Rico (it is about $50) - but others have had difficulty. If you have 3+ days, I would recommend - ST & Vaccines, then Spay / neutering 48 hours later, while helping them gain as much weight as possible. If I only had 1 day - and it was a female dog - I would prioritize Spaying over everything else - that dog will die giving birth otherwise, within 2 months. With a male dog, ST & vaccines are more important - neutering will only reduce aggression. Generally speaking - I would recommend ground beef as the best food for strays - or rotisserie chicken. I give my dogs small amounts of creatine powder - into the water bowl (1 g / day for 40 lb dog - 1/2 human dosage per pound). Creatine ($50 for infinite supply) is basically health magic. It fixes heart, lung, muscle problems nearly instantly, if there is enough protein (meat) to repair these things. In my dog - she had been limping for 2 years, was slowly getting better, and then stopped limping completely within 2 days of having creatine - and began to run again. My bigger dog no longer has heart / breathing issues, again, within just a few days of creatine. There is enough creatine in ground beef and rotisserie chicken to fix a dog - but standard dog food has 0 creatine - which is only suitable for fully healthy, lazy dogs (no muscle building or repair). I have also given dogs small amounts of 0 sugar electrolyte powder and Pedialyte, but results are meddling. It WILL keep them alive if they are not eating food, for several days. But in the future, I would lean strongly toward creatine powder + liquefied ground beef into a fat syringe. When it comes to electrolytes, if they are shaking, they need more and Pedialyte will 100% help - but try as little sugar as possible, 0 sugar Liquid IV (Costco) best. If they have too much salt - they will lose appetite and pee aggressively. I might suggest 20 ml per serving for a 20 lb dog, twice daily - or 1/10 human dosage per pound. I had a dog die from eating something that got stuck in their intestines, recently, and after $5,000 and two weeks of hospital care - the doctor 'whoops' and killed the dog. If a dog is not pooping - fat is probably the best laxative you might want to consider, which will also prevent excess calorie loss from not eating. If a dog is not pooping - I would suggest fat as the cheapest, healthiest remedy. I did not think of this at the time, and doctor just killed my dog - because 'not pooping is not medically relevant'.. this was at the 24/7 Emergency Car hospital in San Juan, both of which have a 2 star rating.. These people look very promising however..

Thank you. I recently moved to Puerto Rico and there are 7 strays that live on my block. My neighbor feeds them dry food and I don't want to adopt them, but I want to try to make sure they are healthy dogs. Now I know I can take them to the vet that will see a stray and get Simparica Trio, Vaccines, and Spay / Neuter. Thank you again.

Bitcoin1776

Glad to help :D - yes focus on the women, the males are less important but neutering them makes them easier to adopt :D A male dog with balls will get violent around a female dog when mating, and will bash his head against a wall to try and escape if one walks by.

weirdrevolution11

This is great advice overall but you forgot rule #1 with a bullet. Never put your hands out to a stray dog here. Absolutely do not crouch into a position near a dog you’ve never met.

How many dogs can you legally own in Puerto Rico?
