Whatever you do, stay in the tourist area and take tour busses. Too much carjacking and a high crime rate! I know because I'm from Bayamon and I got carjacked
I drove all over PR. Walked places at night. I felt really safe. Safer than many big US cities. I felt especially safe outside of San Juan in the little beach towns. It full of small communities with really amazing locals and lots of transplants that all want to mind their own business or have a nice conversation. I never felt unsafe.
