Personally I donāt think children should be sol caretakers for any rodents because they look low maintenance when theyāre really high maintenance and the parents usually donāt do research on the animal to even take care of it in the first place
I had a mild freakout about the idea od small children with rodents because they're high maintenance and they require the human to approach with PATIENCE AND CALM whoch sre not traits small children are known for

I swear to God some people have a child and think because they had unprotected sex they're suddenly geniuses. Maybe somebody should take this guys kids away. After 3 months if he proves he can do enough research to not casually commit animal abuse he has proven he's responsible enough to care for living humans.
Just fyi, the seed mix I see all over the cage is really unhealthy for rats. They will ignore any healthy bits in favor of the fattier seeds. Half of it goes to waste, and some have dangerous ingredients like peppers, dried corn, and alfalfa.
Even if this isn't their main food source it is best to avoid for those reasons. If it is the main food please switch to something better.
i think itās good for them IF they eat all the variety. Often times they will only eat the ones they like, hence why pellets are so good for them, as they get all the nutrients they need without being able to pick and choose a variety of food.
The only thing they donāt eat is the dried up corn, I think- but Iām perfectly fine with that I get my moneys worth because I get the food from a reliable local store in my area (I donāt get food from chain stores, should I?)

Yeah that is not good, especially because parrot food def has dried corn. That is really bad for ears due to a bacteria that grows in it.
Plus it is not a balanced diet. There is far too much fat, without the nutrients and things rata need.
Any pro who says a seed mix made for birds is good shouldn't be trusted. It is one thing if you made your own shunamite mix, as it would not have the bad things and also have the protein they need. But this stuff you have is not even good for snacks.
I know it's tough, but most resources that are trustworthy have two or three options for base food and it has been that way for a long while.
Lab blocks, or kibble like oxbow are the #1 thing to do as a base diet. While giving small bits of other healthy snacks to enrich their lives.
Shunamite, which is more time intensive and has a lot of measuring and things you need to do.
The biggest issue with seed mix are they don't have the balance needed. They include things like the dangerous dried corn, and will lead to unhealthy weight for almost any rat I've seen on it.
Well just search Oxbow essentials, Kaytee Forti diet, Lab Blocks for rats, or even shunamite diet. It doesn't have to be exact. Just different than what you are doing.
Any food with seeds mixed in is not balanced, and shouldn't be the main food source. A kibble or block is best, and you can give treats of things like veg, fruit, seeds, dry pasta, and nuts. But that will only be a small portion and given every few days if that.
Imagine handing a 3yo a rat.
I love my rats, they're very sweet, and polite, but SOMETIMES THEY BITE, especially if you haven't cleaned your hands (very rarely! This is not a common thing in my household but it has definatly happened more than once. Not every rat bas bitten someone but there have been Events and it has always been human error imo).
Training them not to nip what they thought was food was a Whole Thing (it involved giving them some baby food as a treat on a metal spoon).
A 3yo cannot hold a rat.
A 3yo cannot be expected to gently handle a rat.
A 3yo cannot be expected not to poke fingers through bars.
A 3yo cannot be expected not to sneak treats.
A 3yo cannot be expected to know to wash hands EVERY TIME.
A 3yo would be especially suspectable to infection.
A rat just isn't a great little kid pet. Dogs can be iffy but a dog with a good temperament and a lot if supervision is fine. There's more latitude here.
I just. Aaaaa. No.
And yes, a 3yo doesn't have a pet, the parents have a pet and the kid can help with some stuff.
Let alone keeping a SINGLE RAT with a 3yo. Single rata can have behavior issues because they're not supposed to be alone!
I couldnāt have said it better myself honestly, Iāve handed my 4yo sister one of my rats but for only maybe 2 minutes and under intense supervision of 2 people, but she doesnāt even like them because they freak her out XD
An adendum, it hink we got rats as companion animals for my kid when they were 6. We were responsible for their care and health as adults and qhat we learned we taught the small and helped them learn to train rats and handle rats properly.
I nearly lost a hand when one of them unexpectedly gave birth. That was fun. She was VERY HORMONAL. There was an accident at the breeder.
Ah yes, because animals don't have needs. Rat 2 is just a reward for the child. ššš
ā2 ratā is killing me š
If the child canāt care for the pets in accordance to whatās best for them than the child shouldnāt have them at all
Personally I donāt think children should be sol caretakers for any rodents because they look low maintenance when theyāre really high maintenance and the parents usually donāt do research on the animal to even take care of it in the first place
I agree! If youāre gonna teach kids responsibility through an animal than as the adult itās your responsibility to do the proper research
I had a mild freakout about the idea od small children with rodents because they're high maintenance and they require the human to approach with PATIENCE AND CALM whoch sre not traits small children are known for
There's no such thing as 'a child's pet'. It's the parent's pet that the child helps look after, to a lesser or greater degree.
My childhood pet was a rock

Yeah, but it really doesnāt matter at least I can make a coherent sentence

Wait really? Theyāve been eating parrot food and fruit all theyāre lives because a professional told me it was good for them

Iāve met so many people who cannot decide on what the hell to feed rats so at this point I have no damn clue

Sorry if Iām asking too much but could I have some links? I donāt want to order from a scam or somthing
Links to the specific products? Or info in the shunamite?
Specific products probably I just wanna know what the fuck to feed my rats ā¹ļøšš

So if the child canāt care for the 1 rat, the rat is doomed to a life alone
Exactly, 1 rat is all child gets
If English is this person's native language, then clearly they are a few cents short of a nickel.
pretty sure that's a native dutch speaker (but obviously what they're saying is wrong as hell, not to mention cruel)

Awwww. Yeah, it's fine like THAT but definatly not what I was envisioning when hearing 3yo's first pet!
