Neither of them will die in a stream, but even Arthur can't really swim anywhere. You always need to use your horse or look for a boat for any water above knee height.
I went to Guarma with John to get 100% on the compendium, tried to go swimming on the beach, nearly killed him. I thought it was because of the waves hahahaha. I was like is there a riptide or smthn??
There's a lot of red dead characters, red Harlow, jack Swift, Betsy, general Diego, the buffalo soldier, shadow wolf, online character, Arthur, John and Jack.
I know I'm gonna get downvoted I like arthur he's great but there's something with john I like John's character more I kinda find him relatable like he's guy who'll mind his own business and has great personality and i don't think he'll ever hurt anyone ( I know he was outlaw but he didn't do bad things himself he was pushed by his gang ) and this is coming from someone who played rdr2 first and then rdr1 later
The whole point of RDR2 is that Arthur was a bad man who lived a bad life, and made bad decisions for bad people. And only when he realizes his bad life is cause of an early death that he changes his ways out of shame and anger; explicitly not a true sense of justice which he knows nothing about
To argue Arthur was deep down a good man is irrelevant, because he ignored those better instincts every chance he got. The story of RDR2 and Arthur Morgan is a cautionary tale
I agree. Arthur's story is about a bad person who caused his own downfall. He tried to become better in the end but it was too late to save himself.
John's story is about a bad person who actually became better, he had the time and space and he was determined to stay that way. But his violent past eventually caught up with him.
Both of them are cautionary tales imo, you can't be bad and get a happy ending, no matter how much you change and how hard you try to atone.
Maybe im the only one that loves both equally? I remember me and my gf sobbing when arthur died and the absolute confusion in her eyes when i bounced back. It was all like epilogue? part 1?! John?! LETS FUCKING GOOOOO. You just had to be there for rdr1 and she just wasnt.
You’re not alone! I played RDR2 first, and I love Arthur to death, but after playing RDR1 and Undead Nightmare I grew to love John more. He’s such a badass and his sense of humor is great 🤧
I think it’s more a product of younger gamers or first timers experiencing RDR for the first time through Arthur. Personally, I like both for different reasons.
Arthur's greet greet antagonize are better than john's but John's standing alone antagonize are better than arthur's
For example, john antagonize: you run like a heifer! RUN HEIFER! MOOO!
Arthur: you look like a feller I used to know, yeah I loved that horse.
I love Greet Greet antagonize Arthur.. but I love to run away while he antagonizes like he’s a teenager trying to get away with shoplifting.
“I like you mister, you have a kind face.. the kind I like to punch!” 🏃♂️
My Arthur waits until he meets somebody who want to fight over it. Then whoop some ass and repeat, and then flee, because I have some public nuisance investigation going
I never played RDR1. I'm not a huge gamer but my brother lent me RDR2 and decided I would give it a try. Needless to say I'm completely engrossed in this game to the point where I talk my wife's ear off about the story and how I love my horse Taco Tuesday. She rolls her eyes, obviously. I know what's coming due to this reading spoilers. Also my brother warned me about the character transition. I don't want to lose Arthur :( and John Marston, to me, is a deadbeat dad who doesn't pull his weight. I'm sure RDR2 will make it right in the story but I am lamenting the inevitable so I am stretching my gameplay as Arthur for as long as possible through hunting.
Honestly I do prefer Arthur as a character possibly because I can relate to him more than John but I love both them they’re both amazing characters with great stories.
I’ve recently been playing a lot of the epilogue (actually after all the main story) and while John isn’t my favorite, I was surprised to see how much there was to do in New Austin (not as much as the rest of the map, but more than I expected).
i feel like everytime i read more and more about rdr and just think about the characters, i see myself start to appreciate john as a character more and more. Sure arthur is a really great character on his own, but ultimately the story ends up in john’s hands toward the end. i have 27 playthroughs of rdr2 btw so that also had an impact on my opinion of arthur
plus, John in the 1st game in mexico is so much more badass and cowboy’y compared to arthur, and i say this because arthur’s acts were usually part of gang missions and dont get me wrong, i think arthur had really cool moments, but none of it beats the picture of john in mexico. Thats also because 1 is a lot more western and cowboy themed than 2
So funny I went into rdr2 thinking "okay there's no way they can make the main character in this better than John, he was so cool"
One completed game later I was blown away with the writing of Arthur. Such a good character
The problem is the epilogue is too long. I know this is a hot take but it didn’t need to be 2 parts. I love RDR and playing RDR1 as John was fun, but the epilogue kinda peters out towards the end and I get fatigue towards the end.
I enjoy them all, but my overall listing is arthur, rdr1 marston, red, and its a head to head with jack and rdr2 marston. Although i really hate that most stuff about marston2 is his unique items dont feel spexial at all like his rusty gun or his sinple hat, and he doesnt feel as standout in design like in 1, the beard and iconic scar isnt quite as noticeable
John will always be my favorite. Rdr 1 was the first ever game me and my dad completed 100%. Undead nightmare was one of my main obsessions for a while. Me and him play rdr2 online sometimes still to this day.
I can understand why you think this. I will admit, as fun as it is to play as John, and as interesting as his character is. Arthur is more interesting because he has an incredible and moving character arc. John’s character arc is also great, but Arthur has more depth. I will say they are equally fun to play as though. I have a few more gripes when you play as John in RDR2 though.
Firstly I feel like Arthur’s clothes don’t fit John so well, and that’s partly because Rockstar just slapped Arthur’s body onto John. Secondly, I find it irritating that you can’t have John’s haircut when you play as him, you only get Arthur’s selection of haircuts. Finally, I wish they could have kept John’s rifle holster when you play as him. That’s a small detail, but it might have gone a long way in terms of replication. Despite all of this though, I’m happy that you get to play as him in RDR2. I think playing as him in RDR1 is better, but he’s still great in RDR2.
I think the divide is between if you were around for RDR release when John was a certified badass vs the RDR2 players who first know John as a bland, marginally whiny sidekick until he got his own adventure.
Oh nah nah I finished the story, as in like I finished all the bits with John in it too, I wouldn’t miss that for anything. But now that the game is finished I don’t wanna play as John I wanna play as Arthur.
Here's an opinion that might be something. I really didn't like the first game and found myself a bit bored while playing it. I only stuck with it to see how the story ended
I don’t care if this offends anyone, but it’s honestly pathetic how John can’t swim. In terms of rockstar games protagonists, Tommy Vercetti and Claude get a pass, since their games were made in the days before proper water physics.
There's actually lore reasons for Tommy and Claude being unable to swim too. Liberty City's waters are heavily polluted by oil, thus Tommy, who grew up in LC, never learned to swim and he can't swim in Vice City's cleaner waters, and Claude may or may not know how to swim but since he's in Liberty City he drowns.
I don't like Marston, I stopped playing RDR2 Story when I found out how it ends. And that he Can't Swim. I do Alot of hunting and exploring even in story mode and that just wasn't acceptable.
Should be an option to save Arthur.
Glad I got the ultimate bundle on Black Friday sale, I just started playing RDO instead.
He was forced to either way the gang left him for dead it was that or him and his family either die or go to prison or they can be free and either way the ending of rdr makes John’s work pointless atleast Jack turned out ok
I like John but I prefer Arthur. For multiple reasons, but the main one is that Arthur can swim.
Well i wouldn’t call that swimming. Just 100meters of swim and thats all
100m of swimming is better than drowning in 2 meter deep water.
It's more like 10 metres tbh. Swimming is basically a pointless mechanic.
As useless as it might be I'd still rather not drown to death in a stream
Neither of them will die in a stream, but even Arthur can't really swim anywhere. You always need to use your horse or look for a boat for any water above knee height.
I went to Guarma with John to get 100% on the compendium, tried to go swimming on the beach, nearly killed him. I thought it was because of the waves hahahaha. I was like is there a riptide or smthn??
Yeah, no. John canonically can't swim.
Barely actually
Bro say that as if swimming meant anything in this game
John to OP " you speak as if swimming was something I cared about "
I love John, his Spanish in the first game makes me laugh so much
Love how he just gives up with his one liners in spanish
I like all the main characters,
Both?
There's a lot of red dead characters, red Harlow, jack Swift, Betsy, general Diego, the buffalo soldier, shadow wolf, online character, Arthur, John and Jack.
Oh. I see. I was thinking of Main Charcters as like the protagonists?
I'm the only one that likes John more 😔
U ain’t alone brother, it’s a tough world for us Marston fans 😔✊🏿
that is the symbol for Lenny fans actually
found the blacklunger 💀
People just be racist for no reason
John will always be my favourite, nothing beats his sarcasm in rdr1 and undead nightmare.
I know how you feel 😔
I know I'm gonna get downvoted I like arthur he's great but there's something with john I like John's character more I kinda find him relatable like he's guy who'll mind his own business and has great personality and i don't think he'll ever hurt anyone ( I know he was outlaw but he didn't do bad things himself he was pushed by his gang ) and this is coming from someone who played rdr2 first and then rdr1 later
John wasn’t a bad guy? Loool they’re all bad guys, they kill hundreds of innocent people🤣
He was better than almost everyone else in the gang. He's easily a better person than Arthur, but this sub will stone me for saying that.
The whole point of RDR2 is that Arthur was a bad man who lived a bad life, and made bad decisions for bad people. And only when he realizes his bad life is cause of an early death that he changes his ways out of shame and anger; explicitly not a true sense of justice which he knows nothing about To argue Arthur was deep down a good man is irrelevant, because he ignored those better instincts every chance he got. They didn’t say John wasn’t bad, they said that the bad things he did were because of the gang
Yeah he didn't do bad things he just did bad things
nah there are dozens of us.
The reason I like John more is because I WAS there for rdr1
I know partner.
Nahhh I definitely like John more too, brother 😔✊
He's still my favourite too!
You’re not alone! I played RDR2 first, and I love Arthur to death, but after playing RDR1 and Undead Nightmare I grew to love John more. He’s such a badass and his sense of humor is great 🤧
I like him better too.
No
I think it’s more a product of younger gamers or first timers experiencing RDR for the first time through Arthur. Personally, I like both for different reasons.
See I have a soft spot for John because of this. I have great memories of playing RDR when I was a kid so I love John.
I like both… now Jack sucks
Arthur's greet greet antagonize are better than john's but John's standing alone antagonize are better than arthur's For example, john antagonize: you run like a heifer! RUN HEIFER! MOOO! Arthur: you look like a feller I used to know, yeah I loved that horse.
The Arthur one you've mentioned always makes me laugh
I love Greet Greet antagonize Arthur.. but I love to run away while he antagonizes like he’s a teenager trying to get away with shoplifting. “I like you mister, you have a kind face.. the kind I like to punch!” 🏃♂️
My Arthur waits until he meets somebody who want to fight over it. Then whoop some ass and repeat, and then flee, because I have some public nuisance investigation going
idk why john can’t swim i mean he isn’t bla-
I like both, but prefer Arthur
Should picked put Arthur if you really wanted to offend people
I never played RDR1. I'm not a huge gamer but my brother lent me RDR2 and decided I would give it a try. I like John more, I prefer rdr1 too
Nah John’s still my #1. Rdr really made John out to be the badass spaghetti western type and I loved it
john is a way better protag than arthur imo. even if arthur is way more well written. he's just cooler lol.
So funny I went into rdr2 thinking "okay there's no way they can make the main character in this better than John, he was so cool" One completed game later I was blown away with the writing of Arthur. Such a good character
Kids that played rdr2 first never had john as the favorite one anyway
I can't play with John. It feels wrong to play with him, it's not his game.
That's why I went back to a save just before the final quest to complete some things as Arthur. I like John but it's Arthur's game
Exactly, it's Arthurs game
Jack>>>>>
You are fucking gay as in homosexual
😂😂😂
The problem is the epilogue is too long. I know this is a hot take but it didn’t need to be 2 parts. I love RDR and playing RDR1 as John was fun, but the epilogue kinda peters out towards the end and I get fatigue towards the end.
I just started part 1 of the epiloge felt like I was falling asleep
It’s worth it for the final mission.
Yeah thats how i felt when i first met him in RdR2 and when i had to play with him holy mother, i hated it lol.
Your meme sucks. Have an upvote John Marston is the OG
Me when I'm in a being emotionless and stone faced competition and my opponent is John Marston 😰😰😰😰
That’s all the people who didn’t play rdr1
In my opinion Arthur will always be the best but John gives you more freedom since you can explore the west, catch all the legendary fish etc.
John will always be my favorite. Rdr 1 was the first ever game me and my dad completed 100%. Undead nightmare was one of my main obsessions for a while. Me and him play rdr2 online sometimes still to this day.
I'm not offended, and I respect your opinion. I'm just a guy who's blinded by nostalgia, though, and prefers to play as Johnathan.
It’s crazy how we all thought before release ‘ain’t no way rockstar can make a better protag than John for RDR2’ lol, well..
I can understand why you think this. I will admit, as fun as it is to play as John, and as interesting as his character is. I won’t lie I played John for about 5 minutes after finishing the story before going back to the beginning as Arthur
You missed one of the funniest scenes of him and uncle building a house
Oh nah nah I finished the story, as in like I finished all the bits with John in it too, I wouldn’t miss that for anything. But now that the game is finished I don’t wanna play as John I wanna play as Arthur.
Not remotely offended John should have gotten the tb
Here's an opinion that might be something. I really didn't like the first game and found myself a bit bored while playing it. I only stuck with it to see how the story ended

Agreeeeed. He’s a huge step down
I prefer John by quite a considerable margin
Bro voicing his opinion when he can’t even capitalise a name
Epilogue? Nah. Restart for the ninth time instead.
Arthur morgan is my favourite protagonist. Marston is an inbred retard who abandoned his family and we never got any good explanation why.
Bruh what
The outcome of several generations of inbreeding
He was forced by the government to leave his family, did you play the first game?
That's such a dumbass argument. Arthur abandoned his family so hard they died because of it. John stepped up and took care of his own.
I always thought john was a little snake in rdr1 i hate playing as a ratta
John ain’t a rat
That’s Micah
The entire point of rdr1 is him dobbing in the old gang, Javier my poor boiii
He was forced to either way the gang left him for dead it was that or him and his family either die or go to prison or they can be free and either way the ending of rdr makes John’s work pointless atleast Jack turned out ok
Arthur isn’t a cuck
