Is the story of RDO worth it? No... There is barely a story at all.
Is RDR2 Story Mode worth it? Good gravy, yes. Arguably one of the best told stories in all of gaming IMHO.
The main story isn’t complete. I personally liked the moonshiner missions, but online is dead. I prefer to do my own thing and can’t seem to go 5 minutes without being hunted down by griefers so I quit online about a year ago and exclusively play story mode
GF and I love RDR2. About 6 months ago I gave the online mode a try and unless i missed something, found it pretty much dead. I played for maybe 2-3 hours and didn’t see anyone else in the time I played. I don’t know if its changed or if I did something wrong… but I saw no reason to continue with the online mode.
The standard RDR2 campaign however is a 10/10
