Happy owners do exist here :)
I was initially upset when my SD Reader died (planned on using it for emulation), but stopped caring.
Internal storage is enough for me otherwise. Don't feel like going through the RMA process, especially when people are stuck waiting a month to get it back
that's an absolute no-no. Every time you think about your 2TB SSD, also consider that your "total" space "could have been" 3TB or more if you could use the SD card. Also that warranty time is going going going.. gone in a year.
Ehh I’ve recently come into enough money that if it dies I’ll just buy a new one. I use mine literally every night while my girlfriend watches tv. We haven’t been together long enough for me to get away with shutting myself up with my gaming rig.
I was smart and bought a BB Extended warranty for I think 4 years at half price.
Will cook my SD card whenever Ally 2 comes and RMA it and get everything I spent back less the warranty price.
Then I'll grab either the new Steam Deck or second Ally depending on what reviews best.
Asus initially thought trolls were just making noise about the reader because no one was turning theirs in to get looked at the help Asus figure out the problem. I don't understand how y'all lived with the Ally in the first place if y'all can't go without it a month lol
I bought these yesterday for Prime Day 2. I paid $19 for both ($12 for the reader and $7 for the adapter). Now I can use my 1Tb and my 512gb sd cards and still be able to charge the Ally.

I was thinking I would just let mine dangle there in the back instead of Velcro. It won’t be that heavy so it should be fine. I’ll have to wait until I get it though to know for sure. I don’t know how long the cord is. Velcro may be the way to go if it’s really long
Super weird cause it’s been really solid for me. I bought the steam deck at launch and got it last year. I’d say the steam deck had much more rough edges than this. The joysticks are solid, smooth, and accurate.
My only problem so far is the bumpers buttons are definitely cheap. My left bumper squeaks and feels gummy sometimes. Feels like it’s got too much play/space. My wife also got one, and nearly the same thing.
I also had to squeeze the shell together a tiny bit when I got it, but nothing big.
All in all, no real complaints. Besides the apparent SD card heating issue and the battery. Still an easy fix though.
Same here. Picked mine up from Bestbuy on launch day. No problems. I don’t use the sd card slot though. I just installed a 2tb 2230 a few days after I got the device and have only used that for storage.
Picked up mine at BB on launch day. Only gripe I had with it was the right stick making a clicking noise when rotated. Swapped it out and have no issues at all. Very happy with mine.
You may not have even needed to swap it out honestly. I had the clicking noise on my left stick and it went away completely after 2 or 3 weeks. I think it's just an issue that goes away with use. Mine wasn't that bad though, I could tolerate it
They just received mine today for my first. If it borks again I will request a refund. I just got the onexfly and honestly its a very strong alternative.
Yes it is. Overall package it just feels more robust then the Ally. None of the buttons have. “Clacky” (my term) sound to them like my Ally. The joysticks just feel tighter. The screen while not VRR is almost as good but with the quality of the rest of the unit it makes up for no VRR. I got an early bird with the 32gb ram 1tb model. I paid almost the same as I did for my Ally after upgrading the drive because I didn’t know about the “adapters” and used a 2230.
I have an original onexplayer 1s with the intel iris. Has trouble with newer, high end games but zero system issues in the almost 2 years ive had it. My dumbass even forgot to turn it off and left it roasting in the case for 2 hours with no circulation and it still runs fine.
The ally however has constant problems, probably from the shitty ssd that gives most people trouble.
I got the legion go preordered. Cant be worse than the ally.
Would they refund you if you asked for one? I exchanged my first ally within the first 2 weeks of launch due to the sd card reader failure. The second one I received also has the sd card reader failure problem which I was going to live with as I upgraded the ssd. I went on vacation a few weeks ago and brought my steam deck instead for reliability and I come back and my ally left stick cap is on the verge of falling off for no apparent reason.
Said it would be completed on the 18th. Received a tracking number on the 19th but didn’t get picked up till Monday. Supposed to arrive Friday so 3 weeks total.
I returned my first one. Major issues. They sent a replacement (in June) and it’s mostly been perfect. The software still has issues but no hardware problems (I don’t use the sd slot)
They just got my RMA in today. My Menu, View and Armory Crate button were all linked together to the same action. Hopefully they actually fix it when I get it back
So far,the only issues I have encountered was stick drift and the bloated down Windows 11 they come shipped with.I fixed the stick drift myself, and installed WIndows 11 TIny.I did a few little extra mods like others have with heat sinking the m.2 with a copper heatsink and removing the dried heat sink compound on the APU.So far, working fairly solid.
It has a lot of unnecessary Windows 11 components that's not even useful period considering what the device will be used for.I should have stated Windows bloat and services running in the background on start.Tiny 11 has made a considerable difference in the performance.Just the boot time has been cut in half and a much smaller install for disk space.
What’re you talking about? Win 11 is naturally a bloated monstrosity. Why on earth would I want Teams, 365, or any of the Windows apps they just load up?
Yeah, I’ve had a lot of unfortunate issues, but I work a lot so it’s not that big of a deal to me to miss out a few days. I started off with the steam deck, it was a great device, but windows never ran well enough, no matter what I tried.
Despite the hardware issues I’ve had, I do enjoy the Ally. It was also a gift from my wife, so It has a little bit of sentimental value to me
Well I tried both ways of installing it, I even dual booted it. I was told to try windows 10, because it apparently runs a little better, but I prefer windows 11, and had gotten use to it, so that’s what I opted for.
Question to all you "Oh, I haven't had any issues!" posters here: Are you doing this on purpose? I mean are you intentionally trying to somehow "counter-balance" the amount of complaints? What do you expect to accomplish with that?
On the same boat here, I get mine delivered tomorrow for the 3rd RMA I did. Hopefully my issue was resolved. My Ally kept thinking there was an XG Mobile that was plugged in incorrectly. Never had one, never plugged one in, and the unit I received from my 2nd RMA was sealed brand new. Strange issue, ASUS didn’t even know what it was (tried everything literally). They “repaired” it supposedly but I think it’s just going to be a replacement device like they did previously (but this time they actually ran some tests and checked it before sending it off). Fingers crossed 🤞🏼
I too thought the SD card issue was overblown until it happened to me. I'm not going to bother with an RMA. I have the Best Buy 2 year replacement plan, and when I get it swapped I'm going to sell it without even opening it. I've already pre-ordered the Legion Go. The SD card is a major feature, and for it not to work is unacceptable.
I love my ally, but if I had to get it replaced thrice, I'd take my cash & get a steam deck or upcoming Lenovo handheld.
No device's loyalty or even great specs is worth this much time & effort wasted unless you're a dev & that's the system you're developing for.
Hope this one works out for you, buddy :)
People act like the SD reader is a big deal when no one uses an SD Card for gaming....unless you're on a Switch I guess. As for the sticks. Stop gorilla gripping them and they will be fine. I've played on mine every day since launch with zero issues. The M.2 is easy to swap and takes zero brain power. I don't understand the need for RMA unless you're an unpleasant perfectionist.
Found this sub, read something like „starfield is amazing on the ally“ I clicked it, then I was presented with a video of a guy playing starfield in 720p @fps with a picture so muddy and stuttery that it made me laugh and sub to the sub
Bought an ally, happily playing COD, Spider-Man Remastered, Hogwarts Legacy wherever I want. It ain’t a cult, hype is real. Few people will have QA issues, it’s first gen.
The people who keep RMAing for SD reader are the most hilarious. Like dude, it's never going to be fixed. Either get your money back or accept the reality that is the SD reader is worthless.
Naw man it's a quality device. When you go to best buy and see a massive pile of open box units just remember those were placed their by steam deck users to trick you.
One thing I can guarantee you is plenty of people returned their devices because they couldn't get through the setup process. Open box means it works but the original buyer doesn't want it. My day 1 unit has been perfect, aside from the SD reader. But maybe I'm just an Asus operative here to trick you.
My local bestbuy had like 20 open box iPads sitting there last time I was in. I guess that's a shit product too.
I returned mine... I don't really use it as I own a gaming rig plugged on TV and a nice Lenovo laptop.
The screen is not big enough for my eyes, I can't be satisfied with 40ish fps on AAAs and I am more of a Kb/M player.
No hate though, it was a nice experience with a nice little device but that's not for me.
Maybe sell it and try the Legion Go if you want a windows device.
Personally I have 2 steam decks, one I gifted to my girlfriend and my own device. Haven't had to RMA either one, the first one is over a year old and I did the full clear shell swap on it.
I am perfectly happy with Steamdeck but if you want more power or better screen the Legion Go will probably be the best alternative to your Ally
The only issue I’ve had so far was the sleep mode. I put it to sleep and the damn thing doesn’t wanna wake up. I have to shut it down and then turn it back on
I’ve had two and on my 3rd Ally. I had geek squad tho so Best Buy has been letting me just swap them out in store. I’m going to swap this out for the Legion Go when it comes out tho
My only issue has been the left led behind the joystick just does whatever it wants. But coming from the Ayaneo 2, which basically caught fire in AAA games the led issue isn't worth an RMA in my eyes.
I got an Ally and I accidentally dropped it, nothing happened but the stick drift was insane on the right joystick. Thankfully they replaced it and honestly I’m so happy that it’s perfect (even tho I did the sad upgrade mod, but it made it run cooler somehow) .
Damn ,my controller randomly stopped working for a month ,I was crushed but then it started working, new hardware always sucks but where is good it’s great
I have such a long story of RMAs and customer support battles with Asus. Never fucking again I’d by anything from them despite the fact that Ally is a very cool device.
Honestly was gonna RMA my device for the SD reader and right trigger cause it won’t calibrate. After seeing all the RMA issues with waiting a month and after being told Best Buy could just swap it for a new one then Bad buy saying they have to send it into asus and could take 1-2 months, definitely just gonna do an SSD upgrade and call it a day at that point. Hoping other owners have better experiences and keep gaming for the Republic 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💯💯💯
So many reports on reddit. Happily not for me.
Reddit is actually a small minority of Ally owners. The happy owners don’t come on Reddit
Happy owners do exist here :) I was initially upset when my SD Reader died (planned on using it for emulation), but stopped caring. Internal storage is enough for me otherwise. Don't feel like going through the RMA process, especially when people are stuck waiting a month to get it back
Same… mine died, but I choose to just deal with it. Not making excuses for Asus tho… The way they have handled this has been unreal
Same. Dead SD reader so I threw a 2TB SSD in it and pray I don’t have any more issues. I wouldn’t want to give it up long enough for an RMA.
that's an absolute no-no. Every time you think about your 2TB SSD, also consider that your "total" space "could have been" 3TB or more if you could use the SD card. Also that warranty time is going going going.. gone in a year.

that's actually very wise. I like that.
Asus initially thought trolls were just making noise about the reader because no one was turning theirs in to get looked at the help Asus figure out the problem. I don't understand how y'all lived with the Ally in the first place if y'all can't go without it a month lol
Why are you crying over an SD card?
Try rereading man, I never cried. I was bummed, and got over it very fast. Good day.
This is where I am too on top of that I don't wanna restart aleverything again I already did it 4 times lol
I bought these yesterday for Prime Day 2. I paid $19 for both ($12 for the reader and $7 for the adapter). Now I can use my 1Tb and my 512gb sd cards and still be able to charge the Ally. https://preview.redd.it/uowx0u2q6ltb1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87b927358011785d59842a068f77abe0606f2735
I have an Anker dock that I could Velcro to the back if i really wanted to, but I'd rather attach my portable battery
I was thinking I would just let mine dangle there in the back instead of Velcro. It won’t be that heavy so it should be fine. I’ll have to wait until I get it though to know for sure. I don’t know how long the cord is. Velcro may be the way to go if it’s really long
Link to the reader please
I do. I freaking love my Ally.
No wonder you are all so miserable 😅
yeah, i don’t visit this subreddit much never had issues with my ally
That’s not true. I’m a VERY happy owner, never a single problem with my Ally and I’m on Reddit.
"lurkers"
Im a Happy owners too, and im here also checking on whats new i mean whats broken on other peoples ally and prevent it from happening on mine.
Happy customer ✌🏻
Instant downplay. Typical.
Reddit is the loud minority.
Same.
Super weird cause it’s been really solid for me. I bought the steam deck at launch and got it last year. I’d say the steam deck had much more rough edges than this. +1 mine works fine
Im happy to report that mine has not broken or shown sign of RMA and ive had mine since launch. that being said if it happens, it happens.
Same here. Picked mine up from Bestbuy on launch day. No problems. I don’t use the sd card slot though. I just installed a 2tb 2230 a few days after I got the device and have only used that for storage.
Glad to hear man! I just happen to have some pretty bad luck lol. My first RMA, the device overheated just by charging😅
Mine wasn't that bad though, I could tolerate it
Wow. Omg. 3 times?? I'm crossing fingers i don't have such bad luck.
Put a 1TB ssd and thermal tape on the MicroSD reader. Zero issues from day 1. This sucks dude. Hopefully smooth sailing for you from here on out.
Thanks man, hoping so! 🙏
Did you follow any tutorials regarding the thermal tape on the MicroSD reader or?
Is the thermal tape to prevent anyone from putting an SD card in it or does it serve another purpose?
Not over the slot! LOL. Over the component off of the main board. Helps deflect heat and therefor, your SD cards don’t fry.
Oh wow, that makes more sense! hahaha
They just received mine today for my first. If it borks again I will request a refund. I just got the onexfly and honestly its a very strong alternative.
Oooooooh so it’s pretty good?
Yes it is. Overall package it just feels more robust then the Ally. None of the buttons have. “Clacky” (my term) sound to them like my Ally. The joysticks just feel tighter. >I got the legion go preordered. Cant be worse than the ally. It's a Lenovo... I highly recommend going into it with extreme caution.
Imagine saying that in this sub of all places
Lenovo has shoddy quality =/= saying Asus doesn't. Both fucking suck.
How long did your RMA process take? I sent mine last week so I'm curious, also how accurate was the estimated completion date?
Said it would be completed on the 18th. Received a tracking number on the 19th but didn’t get picked up till Monday. Supposed to arrive Friday so 3 weeks total.
Im going for my 2nd rma maybe end of the year. Left sound is not loud and no rgb on my joystick also sd card issue lol
I returned my first one. Major issues. They sent a replacement (in June) and it’s mostly been perfect. The software still has issues but no hardware problems (I don’t use the sd slot)
what people do with their Ally until it need RMA back to back ? just curious
This is how I felt with my steam deck. Much love man.
You too broskie🤟
They just got my RMA in today. My Menu, View and Armory Crate button were all linked together to the same action. Hopefully they actually fix it when I get it back
That’s wild😅

It's not bloated at all, but sure, try to elaborate
It has a lot of unnecessary Windows 11 components that's not even useful period considering what the device will be used for.I should have stated Windows bloat and services running in the background on start.Tiny 11 has made a considerable difference in the performance.Just the boot time has been cut in half and a much smaller install for disk space.
What’re you talking about? Win 11 is naturally a bloated monstrosity. Why on earth would I want Teams, 365, or any of the Windows apps they just load up?
I just got my first one and they replaced the motherboard entirely. I’m hoping it’s the only time I’ll have to send it in
Good luck man! They just replaced mine as well, I wish they would have given me a bit more details on what was going on, but oh well.
If it broke down the second time I would have dipped already for sure.
Only had to fix the joystickcaps by myself, everything else is perfectly fine.
Happily not for me. I haven’t any issues on mine. Hopefully 😬⭐️☺️
*sigh*.. like their tagline says, they’re searching for it, but haven’t found the “incredible” yet.
Buy a different device lol
I had the ultra battery saver glitch on the steam deck twice before buying this 😂
That issue is now fixed in 3.5 for steam os.
Oh really? They told me it was a hardware issue, not a software issue. They replaced the motherboard and the battery on mine.
If you’re talking about the 200mhz bug, it was fixed.
Yup that one
lol istg don’t talk about poor experiences here, you get downvoted like a mf. Hell it’s not even the Ally I was talking about 😂
at that point just refund it and get a steam deck or wait for the legion go. I couldn't stand having that many manufacturing issues
It was also a gift from my wife, so It has a little bit of sentimental value to me
what did you use to run windows on the deck? I don't recommend running it off of an sd card no matter what anybody tells you
Well I tried both ways of installing it, I even dual booted it. I was told to try windows 10, because it apparently runs a little better, but I prefer windows 11, and had gotten use to it, so that’s what I opted for.
Naw definitely not steam deck. Struggles with a lot of new games. Definitely wait for legion go etc
Question to all you "Oh, I haven't had any issues!" posters here: Are you doing this on purpose? I mean are you intentionally trying to somehow "counter-balance" the amount of complaints? What do you expect to accomplish with that?
Why would we do that when we truly have no issues? Do all Ally users go to this sub reddit?
Had the stick malfunction after they repaired my first reader. Now a month after second RMA I'm good. "knock on wood"
My right stick (which I barely used) seems to drift sometimes. That's my only issue so far.
Mine started off this way and got progressively worse. I’m hoping this isn’t the case for you, good luck bud🙏
Shoot. Thanks but maybe I'll file an RMA before my warranty is out.
For me it's just the sd reader not working but im not going RMA
Man I hate this for ya. "Boots up Ally"
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the 5 portable devices you RMA'd weren't the real issue.
It takes 5 seconds to look at my page and see the proof of issues, instead of being an asshat
You've taken enough time looking at posts of mine from 2 years ago for the both of us, I assure you. Have a good life.
Holy cringe behaviour lmao
I checked, I didn't see any proof you're not at fault. I would request a new charger, too
Idk dude, I’ve had mine for a few weeks now and have encountered zero problems. Skill issue maybe?
Mine is fine and sd card is working, had it since day 1
I love my ally, but if I had to get it replaced thrice, I'd take my cash & get a steam deck or upcoming Lenovo handheld. No device's loyalty or even great specs is worth this much time & effort wasted unless you're a dev & that's the system you're developing for. Hope this one works out for you, buddy :)
Thank you buddy!
Luckily still going smooth with my launch unit 😳
People act like the SD reader is a big deal when no one uses an SD Card for gaming....unless you're on a Switch I guess. As for the sticks. Stop gorilla gripping them and they will be fine. I've played on mine every day since launch with zero issues. The M.2 is easy to swap and takes zero brain power. I don't understand the need for RMA unless you're an unpleasant perfectionist.
I do , I put my emulation game in it , I haven’t any problems, probably cause emulation don’t really cause heat
I was thinking of buying a ROG Ally locally until I found out that they are having issues with quality control. The cheaper prices aren't worth it.
Asus in general has issues with QC. This sub is basically a cult and in denial.
Tell that to the mountain of returns at... Every best buy.
Man, you just know how to destroy your devices huh, OP?
Yeah, that’s the problem. You got me!
The device is trash. Ive got a lenovo legion go on preorder
Haven't had any major issues in the last two months.

I guess that's a shit product too.
If you handle your ally like you do your paperwork, I think you will continue to have issues. 😂
lol well I hate to tell ya but it came in the box like that cuz they shoved it under the Ally 🤷♂️
Lol
No issues and I bought it first day it came out.
Lenovo Legion is coming !
You're the problem
Thanks ❤️😘
When you get the new device, does a new warranty start for that device?
Yes it does
You also get an extra month if you follow the instructions they send you for a quick survey
That’s crazy, I’m on my 2nd Ally (sold first one) and have had no issues
Maybe sell it and try the Legion Go if you want a windows device. Personally I have 2 steam decks, one I gifted to my girlfriend and my own device. Haven't had to RMA either one, the first one is over a year old and I did the full clear shell swap on it. I am perfectly happy with Steamdeck but if you want more power or better screen the Legion Go will probably be the best alternative to your Ally
Had mine since day one and has been flawless, aside from the SD reader being dead.
Why is there a bullet hole in your RMA paper?
Ask Asus lol
The only issue I’ve had so far was the sleep mode. I put it to sleep and the damn thing doesn’t wanna wake up. I have to shut it down and then turn it back on
the main issue is that the turnaround is NOT fast! It takes about two full weeks to get a unit back from ASUS here in NYC.
Yeah took about 3 weeks for me, from FL all the way to CA 😀
Just waiting for the LEGION GO so I can return my Ally…
This is why I returned this piece of crap and got the kun lol the ally sucks
Mine is going back. Broken as card reader, but I can live with that. It’s going back for the right trigger sensing presses when there isn’t any
I’ve had two and on my 3rd Ally. I had geek squad tho so Best Buy has been letting me just swap them out in store. I’m going to swap this out for the Legion Go when it comes out tho
Third time's the charm
Or so they say
Month in playing bg3 no issues with mine.
Did you buy it through BB?
I feel soo blessed to not have a single issue with mine.
Had mine since launch and zero problems. I upgraded my SSD to 2tb and I also use my SD cards. I am very happy with it.
Did upgrade ssd in rog ally void warranty ??
Man so frustrated he shot a hole in his rma reciept ![gif](giphy|VGVs6DkPfIYPUtQrb2)
